New to Android, what can I do without SIM? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Waiting for Nexus 4. Activating the micro-SIM means T-Mo terminates existing mini-SIM. So, I want to be sure the N4 fully works before shutting off the existing SIM. What can I do to make sure everything works on the N4 before terminating exisiting phone? Also, what will I be able to do without SIM? Can I download apps/widgets from PlayStore via wifi without SIM? Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure how you can test everything, but I'd test the speaker, play some videos, download some apps on WiFi...just things I would do everyday. So long as you have WiFi you should be able to do everything on your phone except call and send SMS.
And if you're worried about terminating the mini-SIM, why not pick up a mini-to-micro adapter? That way you can activate the new SIM and if something doesn't work right use the adapter and use the new mini-SIM in your old phone. My T-Mobile store had them for about $5. I needed it right away, but if you don't there are tons for ~$1 or less on Amazon.

You can do everything but use it as a phone..

Just trim your SIM. That's what I did.
I actually have one of those cheap ass micro sim cutters and the thing broke on me, so I just used scissors to finish it
Google a pic of a micro sim, and cut your's to same shape.

Just cancel and if it don't work just get a sim adapter

Thanks to all
Thanks to everyone. Got it. Without a SIM, can do everything but phone related things. And, a micro adaptor will allow use of the microSIM in a miniSIM phone. Easier than I thought. Thanks again.

Dial Sim

is there a possibility to use two Sim cards simultaniously - i.e. to send and receive calls from two numbres without needing to switch sim cards?
yup, it should be possible.
there are adapters on the market, check ebay..
http://cgi.ebay.com/GHOST-DUAL-SIM-...ries?hash=item22feb30125&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
but you need to cut youre original sim and the extra one..
thewn you stick the (still functional)remains in a the adapter wich goes in the original place where the single sim used to be...
i had one, but didnt wanted to cut up to test it out...
but a college, from wich i got it, said it worked on his touch...
do some research, or mail a manufacturer and find out additional information
they also sell touch pro's and touch diamond's with dual sim already built in.

[Q] iPhone 3GS micro sim card

Hey guys, I just bought a t9193 and am wondering if I am going to have any issues using the micro sim card from my iPhone 3GS? I know I will need an adapter to make it fit, but aside from that, any issues I should expect?
Also, once I do get a working sim in to the device, will I need to configure any network settings manually or should that be pulled down from the provider (Bell)?
Thanks!!
Bill
Hi,
I've been using an adapter for the micro SIM since last summer & not had any problems.
Only issues is sometimes its a pain to get the damn thing in, without it dropping out of the holder.

P6800 SIM Card not recognized!!!

Hi,
I just purchased a P6800 to replace my current phone.
Everything is awesome about the device, but everytime I try to insert my SIM from my previous phone, it keeps saying "Please Insert SIM"
After many reboots, same message shows on the unlock screen.
I've tried other SIM cards from my friends' phones (H20, Red Pocket, T-Mobile, Etc.)
The only SIM it seems to detect is my old O2 SIM card from my travel overseas.
Are there different times of Mini SIMs? Perhaps the metal contact sizes are different for data and regular phone SIMs?
I hope someone can help as I would love to utilize the full capabilities of this device.
Thanks.

It uses a regular sized SIM, not a micro-SIM. Are you sure you're inserting the SIM with the contact side down notch end first?

Im having the exact same problem. Bought a Telstra sim for my P6800 and it wont recognise it. The same sim works fine in my Galaxy Nexus, and the sim from my Galaxy Nexus works fine in the Tab. It's just this particular sim/data plan it wont recognise the sim, keeps saying 'insert sim'. I had the sim replaced, same issue. Any ideas?
Did you try to go to Settings -> Wireless and then configure the APN, etc.?

Wont let me into it. When I press Mobile Networks it tells me to insert a sim. The sim works fine in other devices but is not detected by the Tab. A Google search reveals that it is a common problem with certain sims and carriers, I may have to go to a Telstra store and try a few different sims.. Unless there is something else I can try?
I had a problem with my sim card but when I reboot my device It is Ok.
Yes. Try to reboot your device. When I inserted my SIM while the tablet was on, it would give me the same error until I restarted the tablet.
You definitely have to reboot the Tab after inserting the Sim.

With respect, rebooting was the first thing I tried! Makes no difference whether I insert the sim when the Tab is off or not, still not detected
If a different Sim card works in the tablet you can see if your phone provider can give you another Sim. If no Sim works, it's most probably HW related

A sim that worked earlier in the week no longer works, sadly now looks to be a hardware issue..
You can't use the micro sims they mess up the sim reader if you leave it in it will continue to work but once you take it out it breaks the sim slot it happened to me i used a att sim first and it worked fine then a rep at a cell shop put his micro sim with an adapter into to it to see if it worked with t-mobile and when he took it out the sim slot wouldn't work I had to get the device replaced

And that is exactly what has happened to me. I was using a micro sim with adapter and after I removed it, the device no longer recognises sim cards. It will cost me AU$130 to have it repaired.
A big warning to everyone else not to use micro sims with adapters, make sure you use a full old-style sim card! Quite annoying since most carriers these days have the sim card with the micro-sim push out, these will damage the sim slot in the P6800
Same problem here after using a microsim adapter now it doesn't recognize any sim. Do you know how to remove back cover so i try to repair internal sim card reader?

Same problem here, after using a Micro-Sim Adapter, my p6800 stopped recognizing the sim cards. I hope the repair do not cost too much.
Don't know if this might help.
I had the same experience when I insert my Sim card the first time.
Luckily I have about twenty old Sim card to play with.
I tried most of them and found put that some Sim card is thinner.
So, what I did was to paste a layer of clear tape on the back of my Sim card to make it slightly thicker.
It will fell a but tight at first.
But it helps.

I've also tried that, pasted a piece of tap to make the sim a bit thicker but It didn't worked, I think I have to send it for repair.
Thanks for your help.

Last try would be the most ancient method.
Try using a eraser to rub the contacts of the Sim card.

[Q] Network Cutting In/Out

I just got this phone today unlocked from tmobile and inserted my custom-cut nano sim into the nano to micro adapter and inserted it into the phone. Everything was fine for a while but i started noticing my data and signal was cutting in and out by itself when the screen was off maybe for 3 minutes or longer. This is a significant problem as you can imagine. I checked every single setting i could and nothing would make it do so. Any advice or suggestions? Im using a straight talk att micro sim card that i had cut down to fit my i5S but came back to android and used a noosy sim adapter. Maybe its the fact that the card is custom cut (so it already doesnt fit the adapter like its supposed to)? I really need help here. Yes i have the proper apn settings and im fully stock.

Switching from RAZR Maxx to MXPE on Verizon - basic questions

Sorry for the basic questions . . .
Looks like I'll be moving from my old RAZR Maxx to the MXPE so I'll need a new SIM card for the X. I'm on Verizon.
What is the procedure, or where can I find a link to the procedure, for doing this?
Can I just walk into my local Verizon store and get the new SIM for free?
Do I just put the SIM in the MXPE fire it up and I'm in business or do I need to call Verizon or go online to activate the phone?
Should I already have an SD card in the phone before I turn it on and activate it or should I wait until I've done those things to put in the SD card?
I plan on keeping my RAZR Maxx as a backup. How do I go about switching back and forth between phones if I need to do that?
Thanks!
The way I did it was I just used a buddys phone(last gem moto x I believe) that had the correct sim card, went to Verizon store told them I needed that phone activated, they gave me a new sim card free of charge and they activated it,I walked out to my car took the sim card out put it in my new Motorola x pure and have been enjoying it sense.
Also when you put the sim card in give it a couple of minutes to pick it up,I got worried it didn't work at first ,I'm impatient and got worried that it wasn't working, when I was just about ready to flip it said verizon for my network then all was good.haha
I upgraded from an S4. I bought a sim cutter on amazon for cheap and it worked great. I cut my sim in no time at all, entered the nano size sim into the moto x and it connects to the verizon network automatically. I never had to step foot into a verizon store or do any type of activation on myverizon. The sim cutter also came with an adapter piece to make it compatible with the micro sim size so it will work on the razr maxx when you want to use it. I recommend holding off entering your sim card into the moto x on your first boot and enter your google information into the phone on wifi. If you have an unlimited data plan you should be able to use wifi tether with no limitations this way. Entering an SD card before or after activation makes zero difference, might as well have it in for your first boot. Good luck!
I just called Verizon and told them I needed a sim for a phone I was buying from someone. They sent it to me. Called to get the phone activated and it worked. I don't see why you could not get one from the local store now.
I had to pay $20 at my local Verizon dealer for a sim card. It wasn't an official Verizon store though, just a franchised store, so I'm not sure if that made a difference.
As for the OP though, it should just start working with not tinkering needed. Just make sure your sim is in before you first boot it up. I've read of problems when putting your sim card in after the first boot.

That may have been the difference. The X was in the process of being whitelisted when I received mine. I didn't tell them I was getting an X at that time but that I was buying a used phone from someone that required the micro sim. They sent it right out without a question.
Thanks for all the responses, good information.
I picked up a 32GB MXPE during last week's Amazon deal and it arrived today. :victory: I'm charging it now and probably will start the initial set up tomorrow after work.
I see from poking around that the Add Google Account screen asks for a device to restore from and the last initial set up screen has a Start Migrate button and says it will "Move photos, videos, music, call history, and more" from the device. Does this mean it only restores data and won't restore apps?
I would like to restore my data from the old phone but I prefer to manually install my apps on the MXPE and NOT restore any apps from my old phone.
Is this possible? How do I do that?
Thanks!

If I remember correctly, when you go through the migration process, it lets you choose whether you want your old apps installed or not.
