I'm finding the standard LCD density too small and prefer a setting of at least 200 on my Streak. I also find that 3rd party widgets tend to look better on a setting of at least 200 and best on 240.
Only issue I have is various stock apps no longer look right at the higher setting e.g. the Gallery doesn't display the buttons at the top correctly, the dialer shortcut doesn't appear correctly in the Stage launcher, when receiving an incoming call in landscape mode the number is not fully visible, dialer looks weird and I'm sure I will find more things.
Basically, the two biggest annoyances for me are the dialer and the gallery. Can versions of these apps be baked into a rom that is designed to be used at the higher LCD dencity?
THANKS!!!
Krisbo
agreed the high density looks very sharp, I like it.
but trying to enter text in some fields, you cant even see the input field, Dialer incall buttons and contact names become b0rked, among other things,
Can anyone fix this so they dont get so blown out of proportion?
Thanks. The highest I went is 200, but back to 160 on djsteves 1.5.1 because of issues mentioned above.
I do believe you'd have to open up each apk and completely redo all the graphics so they don't look out of proportion blown up. I guess all you'd have to do is make them all smaller but it will probably be much more complicated than that!
So yes, it can be done. But i doubt anyone will do it.
Could you copy an apk from another phone with a higher pixel density? E.g. nexus one I think has 252ppi.
nexus by default is 240 yes, ill have a look at doing a 1.5.1 huge version wen i get a sec
You are awesome!
Could you possibly make it no baseband because I use a rebel sim?
Thanks
Before flashing the zip, unpack the whole thing and open system/build.prop with a text editor (like notepad or your favorite IDE). Then search for "ro.sf.lcd_density=160" and change it to a value you like. Save the file and repack it into the zip file (with WinRAR for example). Flash the ROM using StreakMod or ClockWorkMod and have fun with it!
Another option is to get Root Explorer - or a similar program - and go to system/build.prop. Set the permissions to r+w. Now you can edit this file using Root Explorer or copy it to your MicroSD and edit it like I said before. After the edit copy it back if you have too or save it. Then set the permissions back to r+o and reboot.
I have mine set to 220, which is a great size but I guess 200 is nice too!

I think we understand that, the issue we have is that anything higher than stock 160 and apps get blown out of proportion, escpecially phone app for me, 180 is the highest /usable/ for me. I would love to have to cranked to the max, after owning an iphone 4 for a while, sweet display; but software is too simple.
Thanks DJ_Steve for looking into this,
please see if you can sort out the blurry contact pictures in-call, they look horrible even on stock 160, is it just me?

Exactly. I'm running mine at 220 but if the phone happens to put itself in landscape mode while it's ringing (happens sometimes) I can't see who is calling.
sorry i don't get it. how is the pixel density supposed to increase if the resolution of the LCD screen is fixed (480 by 800 pixels, not one more not one less)? to clarify, I am not denigrating, I just do not understand
Very frustrating. I dont have "ro.sf.lcd_density=160" in my build prop. Im on official ota update from a couple days ago

I don't think this line is in the stock build.prop. Just add it under #other edits. If that's not their either, look for either debug.sf.hw=1 or debug.sf.hw=0 and add it after that.
You can use Incoming Call Plus (beta) as a replacement for incoming calls. This works great and has no negative side-effects for me.

That's not bad although the answer/reject buttons are UGLY!!! Does the job though and I can see who is calling
Any progress Steve?
I took this Gallery apk out from the Cyanogen Mod HTC Evo zip. It should scale properly when you change your DPI although stuff becomes real small when you go back to stock 160 DPI. It also fixes the "this is an audio file only" or whatever the hell that is if that wasn't already fixed.
It seems Dell changed the DPI of the dialer and gallery app to make use of the screen real estate while also using 160 dpi for the rest of the system.
Tried that apk n didn't do **** for me but I might have done it wrong...no biggy 1.5.3 looks like it might have this area sown up

Not sure what style lock screen my android install uses but it's the one like a rainbow shape that you drag downwards and it's awful as I keep finding the phone unlocked when I take it out of my pocket.
I'd like to change the lockscreen to either what I think is the Frodo one (sideways sliding icons for lock and volume/speaker mode?), or the X10 one which is like quarter circle swipe.
Is there some app (free ideally!) that will let me do this or a manual way I can do it if there's a source for necessary files (without too much grief).
I read that if I delete the htclockscreen.apk file then the phone will revert to the froyo one (as I use a froyo build), but when I try that with a file manager I can't delete the file - presume it's a permissions thing or something?
Thanks for any help!
ETA that most lock related apps I see in the market seem to relate to disabling locks rather than anything to change the one you already have.
Forgot to say I'm trying out Lockbot at the moment and it sort of works but it seems a little hit & miss.
In particular when you unlock the phone and it normally makes that little click sound (if you haven't turned that off of course), it sounds more like a machine gun before the lock screen comes on, and that worries me a little bit that there's something not right going on.
You could try a-lock from the Market, which is somewhat like S2U2
You could flash a cyanogenmod rom like this onetycoon cm7 comes with 4 different lockscreens ..or try simply lockscreen from the market..
Had the same issue of phone unlocking with the "arch style locker" so bought widget locker, which works perfect, it allows you to have different styles of lock screen & add widgets, cost next to nothing, I'd recommend it.
www.appbrain.com/app/widgetlocker-lockscreen/com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker
But if you really don't want to pay for a lock screen, I've attached a different lockscreen for you to try.
Worked fine for me before I bought WL, see my sig for rom, but as always when changing system files, use at your own risk, tho there shouldnt be a problem.
The LS with 2 circles was extracted from a htc dhd build (free), the other pic is WLocker (paid)
Try if you like... don't try if you like, just an option
I feel CM7 may be your best shot, I use and love it! Very easy to customize.

Thanks for the replies dudes.
Will have a look at A-lock. And Simply Lockscreen (or did you mean it's simply called 'Lockscreen'?). Not being facetious there - just clarifying!
Kam333 - thanks for that file mate. Will check it out definitely.
I am now trying Wlocker as Lockbot was too erratic. Wlocker seems to be ok so I might end up buying it but I like to try out options first before deciding.
That Rom is tempting too I must admit but the bit about the high drain on BT standby concerns me a bit as I leave BT on all the time.
Decisions eh! But I appreciate all the suggestions, thanks.
Not sure how to use your one Kam - when I run an installer against the apk file it only gives be an option to UNinstall it, which I guess means it just maybe has the same name as the existing one. Am assuming once an uninstall is successful then it will allow me to install it, but why won't it let me remove the other one first?
I've tried that but it failed. Similar problem to not being able to delete the standard apk file from its directory either.
Hey
You need to push the 2 files to your system folder,
For the build I'm using, I placed the files in a folder [DL_update/root/system/app]
This goes on the root of your sd card then reboot,
You should check on your build thread for the name/path of the folder "dl_update" is specific to the build I'm using, the rest should be the same tho.
If you have any probs let me know.
Kam
Thanks - have tried doing that but with a file manager I can copy ok, but paste is not available for some reason when I try to overwrite the existing ones.
Thought I'd do it via the PC as well but that won't work as I can't see the folder structure on the phone itself, only the SD card.
I'm now trying Lock 2.0 which 'would' be great except that when locked, you can use the hard keys (home key and power key I think) to bring up menus, some of which can basically unlock the phone so despite having a better slider I still find it unlocked in my pocket, and doing stuff like trying to dial my mum while I'm having a swearing contest etc.
I can't find a menu option in the program to disable these menus but I'm sure they wouldn't have been stupid enough to make a decent lock app that is full of holes like that and couldn't be disabled?

Hey,
the lockscreen is a system file, you wont be able to modify/edit systems files without root permissions, you'll need to use a root capable explorer such as Root Explorer or ES in root mode.
or use the method in my last post.
if you view this & not logged into xda ive just pm'd you

******NEW THREAD*******
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2347220
If you want to take up this or a similar project on your own, I will provide you with instrucations on what to modify. HOWEVER, you must get permission first from each Rom Chef, as these are their works and we are simply modifying for our own use.
Captivate Touch:
GB via CM7 is working very well. Camera is functional and I am testing the GPS. See notes below. If you are going to install GAPPS, make sure you remove the setup wizard apk from the zip file.
I am running Launcher7 on mine so that my toddler can easily see her books and games on the launcher screen. Will post screens later.
Changelog:
3.1: CM7 based Touch. Working.
3.0: GB Fail, could not get camera working on any GB rom.
2.0: Fixed GPS, removed mms, added dialer back for secret code access.
1.1: Removed modem lib (broke GPS)
1.0: Removed no signal notification
I take no responsibility... yada yada yada. What you do to your phone is your business, don't blame me.
First off, these ROMs are not my creation they belong to the chefs that cooked them or the devs that built them. All I did was modify them to suit my needs. If you like these ROMs, please buy them a beer and support future development. They have endorsed this project and for that I thank them. The camera apk in the froyo version is GizmoDroid's modded camera as the stock and hacked camera from SGS Tools did not function properly.
The goal of this project was to a Captivate Rom completely devoid of any cell phone functions. Why? Well, my job required me to switch to another OS, but I had grown dependent on my Android apps. As such I have modified these ROMs to give us a "Touch-like" device, devoid of any cell phone functions, and with amazing battery life.
Yes, I know that you can just put the phone in Airplane mode, remove them sim card, disable the data network etc, but phone functions still remain and its a not a complete nor elegant experience.
What works:
Testing, but so far everything but the phone
What doesn't:
Some lock screens display (no service)
Install Instructions:
I have provided links to each ROM's original thread. Please follow the instructions there.
So here you go:

Based on Cyanogen 7.1
Original Rom Thread: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide

If you want to install GAPPS, I recommend removing the setup wizard APK from the .zip as it was giving me problems.
Confirmed working.

Yep, although Cognition uses Voodoo lagfix and I always play it safe by flashing back to stock before installing a new custom rom.
Cool!! Definitely trying this out!
I don't know if you can add it in but on some roms, ie cm7, there is the previous, play/pause, and next for the media controls on the lock screen which would be probably the 2nd best feature of the touch Rom other than the no phone part

I'm all for what you are trying to accomplish but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this, what does it matter if you still have the phone (that still has the phones functionality) because of your company unless it was a company phone, but if thats the case then why are you modding it to only work as a smaller tablet. This makes me assume that you were issued a company phone other than your cappy? I also assume 2 other things here, you still need it to work wifi and possibly still need a data signal or is this what you need gone al together. to remove the signal bar at the top look in the theme thread about modding the notification bar, I accidently did this one time, I would have to poke around but I manage I could do it again.
But for whatever reason you want to do this have you tried porting a galaxy tab rom to this by chance, is it even possible, I wouldn't know why it wouldn't be possible.

Yes, I had to purchase a non-android device for work and do not want to pay for multiple lines and data plans. The goal was to continue to use the many apps I purchased, improve battery life, and create a more complete expereince. Simply removing the SIM card leave the cell radio software components intact, giving you the emergency call option notification, the missing sim notification, etc. By removing all of the components associated with the phone (except the lost signal notification - sigh) the experience feels "complete" and intentional, rather than hacked together.
If you can figure out how to remove the notification bar that would be great. I am not a developer, coder etc, just a tinkerer who isn't afraid of bricking his phone. As for the Galazy Tab rom, I would not know where to begin.
The ultimate goal will be to port the ROMs from the Galaxy S WIFI 4 and 5, but in the meantime, I will settle for their native apps missing from the captivate.

Interesting..
I see where you are going with this. Two questions; Does removing all phone functions render wifi useless? Does doing this save significant battery life over airplane mode/no sim?
Thanks!

I have not tested battery life compared to airplane mode, but Standby on the Cognition variant seems to be 5-7 days.
Wifi, BT, and GPS all work perfectly.
For now as a "hack" to get the look your going for you could possibly edit the stat_sys_signal_null.png to a blank image maybe that will work for you, it will most likely be in SystemUI.apk in /system/app if I had time I would do it myself but issues at home will prevent me from playing with this tonight
EDIT: Sorry for some reason I thought you were on a 2.3 rom, Personally I would suggest you try this with DAGr8 symply galaxy, I just removed SystemUI.apk from it reboot and now have no notification bar at all, but everything seems to be functioniong correctly.
With your 2.2 ROM you will most likely find the null signal png in /framework/framework-res.apk in the res/drawable-hdpi may have v4 on there too.

I was going to suggest the same - simply replace the signal bar images with blank/100% transparent images.
After playing around with it today thats gonna be your best option. Yoi really dont want to remove your bar altogether this hinders your ability to mount to pc or to use debugger

I guess he can unlock the second captivate, use it as pmp. And use it as phone when travelling abroad by going back to the favorite rom. Well, this cannot be achieved on itouch or on Samsung Galaxy pmp.
I allready have a Samsung Galaxy S3
This are the main features:
pop-up play - using this option allows you to watch a video and use an app simultaneously. it uses a technology similar to picture-in-picture.
burst shot - you can take photos of moving objects or targets. using this option, you can photograph continuously up to 20 frames.
Best Photo - With this option you can shoot continuously up to 8 photos. The phone automatically selects the best photo depending on: clarity, brightness, contrast, face detection etc. You can always manually select another phot, of the 8.
Stay Smart - Stay Smart recognizes your eyes and prevents closing your phone as long as you look at it. It is a very useful function when you're reading an e- book or an E-mail.
Face and Voice unlock - a security option that recognizes your face, as well as your voice.
S-Beam - uses WiFi Direct and NFC. You don't have to hold the phones tight to each other to transfer a file, just touching them will suffice. you can transfer any type of file, of any size. if you're sending a video, you can start watching it although it's not completely transfered
S-Voice - Application used for voice commands. Languages known: English, Spanish, Latin Spanish, French, Italian, German and Korean
And here are some videos made by me:

Are there any mods for use with the S View Cover?
Extra widgets and colours would be cool.

Bought my cover yesterday. Figured there would be some nice mods for it by the time I bought one.
Are there many 'S View Cover' users in here?
ive been using my s-view cover for about 2 weeks or so now and in one breath its brilliant! but in the other breath its a pain in the arse lol.
i tend to use a moga pro quite a bit and an in car phone grip for satnav so when using the sview cover it makes using these to a total pain in the butt. (the edges of the s-view cover get all bent and its just dosent feel good at all).
saying that, when im not using the accessories, its a beaut. (got the black non wireless charging one). feels beautiful, really well built, and love the s-view screen.
just aching to see someone come up with a way to add custom backgrounds to the note 3 s-view screen now as really do not care for the single coloured tiled backgrounds that are default.
this phone better be a keeper for a good while lol, never picked up so many official accessories in my life!,:
samsung S view cover
samsung MHL 2.0 hdmi adapter
samsung 3200mh battery
samsung hs3000 bluetooth headset dongle
samsung note 10.1 external stylus
samsung uhs1 sdxc 64gb micro sd card (70mb read)
usb 2.0 host cable
external bluetooth speaker (mdx jam classic)
moga pro gaming controler
and a shed load of other 3rd party cases already 0_0.

Woah. Samsung must love you.
I'm loving the cover too, but my whole thing is that there is more functionality on the lockscreen without the S View Cover on. If there was a mod for S View sized widgets, I'd be happy. Specifically, a Watch-On widget, and torch shortcut. And yeah, some theming/customization options would be awesome.
hello !
for change background :
Extract the framework-res.apk of your custom rom, open with winrar v5, change or replace with your mainbg_pattern_mainarea.png on directory : res/drawable-sw360dp-xxhdpi .
On note 3, copy on your sdcard, and with root explorer replace this on system/Framework (reboot is automatic when you change the .apk) enjoy!

Simply remove the chip on the back of the cover and turn off the proximity sensor. WYSIWYG from your screen before you close it.
Hi,
It works there on stock Rom (MJ7) ?

Thanks for this! Having a bit of a problem though. Can't seem to replace that mainbg_pattern_mainarea.png file inside the framework-res.apk. It asks if I want to replace, and I say yes, but after copying, it is still the same image. My replacement image is the same dimensions as the original, just a flat colour.
Any suggestions? Also, don't know if it matters, but I'm on a rooted stock rom, via Root De La Vega. So not a custom rom.
Hi
Use perhaps 7zip or winrar 5..
After for root de la vega i don't know
Me, i extract the framework-res of custom rom that i install and replace with root explorer..

thankfully those all seem to include alpha codes as well, so changing a background colour to fully transparent should allow us to use full colour images on the screen instead of tinted via colour...
I shall investigate further
yes, I tried to replace the hex code "holo_purple" by # 00000000 for exemple,
recompiled and replaced my framework, but it does not change anything ... I do not understand!
hmm, that's an odd one... the colour overlays must be linked somewhere else then...
Yes possible.. but where ?!
?
Does anyone know the best colour to use on the background to get it to show up really well? I have tried both black and white but I only get a really feint view of the image.
probably the orange!
but this is true it is not clear...
this is why it should be found or where are these color masks, and how to change, in order to make transparent, and put a real photo ... with color!
hello dev! hello dev! please! lol
Where are these xml?
lol, i've just asked the Xposed people to see if they can figure out a way to customise this... an Xposed module would make this so much easier than manually editing the apk's every time i want to change the wallpaper lol
