[Q] Hotword detection for voice commands broken. - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone else have this problem? Saying 'Google' used to bring up the voice search but its stopped working. All the settings are good and I've tried toggling them on/off along with reboots in between without sucesss. Frustrated

Just to be sure, are you saying "Google" from within Google Now? I remember in the past I would just yell Google from the Homescreen, and nothing would happen, but saying it in Google Now worked for me (I guess it was working as intended).

On mine, it only works in Google Now if the language is set to US English.

Well don't I feel stupid - lol.... It works then . For some reason I got round to thinking that it work any where.... Proof I'm getting old?

I'm not 100% sure if it's even mentioned anywhere that hotword only works from Google Now Just something I ended up finding out eventually (after numerous attempt at trying to do it outside of Google Now)

Google Now crashing

Not sure when this started. I unlocked and rooted before I had even started up, and since then just used the Trinity kernel and toolbox, but apart from that completely stock. It was working, but now it force closes when bring up the results. For example if I ask for the weather it will be half way through the reply then back to the home screen. Happens both on typing and voice search.
Only two threads I can find are below, none of them have a fix

I have deleted the cache and disabled/enabled google search. Any ideas?

I'm having this problem as well with my Nexus 7. I'm not sure what's wrong with it. it's just so frustrating. I tried to download the offline language pack but still didnt work. Like u said no other post online available for this solution yet. Wondering if many people get this.
However one thing did happen, my nexus 7 ran out of batt and turned off by itself. I then plugged it into a power source and turned it on. I run an app and suddenly some blur screen like the TV tuned out came on and all i can hear is some buzzing sound. then i plugged off the power and i charged it again and everything was alright apart from the Google Now thing!!!!!
when the batt ran out, all the memories seems to be wiped out... such as time and date.. seems strange when they built such high tech stuff and they do not have memories to keep track of time and date?!
i really hope this gets resolved soon

GPS issue.... Won't hold lock

Has anyone else been experiencing GPS not holding lock or not locking at all? There are tons of people having the problem in the Google groups.... Surprising to not see more about it here..... Let's get the word out if you do.... Mine will not keep a lock no matter what.... Many resets and other nonsense.... It will sometimes lock but loose it on the move or just drop the lock without moving....
Here are some of the fixes that have been tried / tested:
resetting back to stock
removing google services
downgrading maps
changing settings for WIFI
user data wipe
clear cache
Some of those may temporarily fix it, but any sort of long term use the issue always comes back.

Read about this somewhere on here. Can't figure out how to search a specific forum on this app though so I can't find it.
I think the guy fixed his problem but I don't remember how. Sorry

yeah, there are been several people that "claim" to have fixed it but... it's not really fixed. there have been many different "solutions" thrown around over in the groups but, again none of them worked long term. it might work for a little while, but not for very long. anyone that has a N7 i suggest you test it out.... Try bringing up maps, cache the offline map and try to use the GPS to navigate somewhere.... It will drop off everytime.
Google is going to have to release a patch, that is going to be the only fix!!

so... what's the deal here. I don't see how more people aren't having this problem with the responses on the google site. have people been successful using it? or do u not use it at all anyway? or is it because you have a ROM that it works on? please let me know.
My temporary solution (as suggested by others) is to ONLY allow 1 app which may access GPS.
So I disabled Earth, Maps, GPS Tester (some widgets may use GPS too) ... only leave Sygic navigator. I've navigated a few long drives without issue. Re-enable those apps will bring back troubles.
This works with different ROMs, so it's not a ROM problem.
Hopefully Google will have a fix soon.
yeah, that only seems to work for a short period of time too! thanks though!
well, at least it's out in the open now and it will force googles hand!

I haven't touched Google services, just simply disabled (GPS-accessing) apps such as Maps, Earth, GPS Tester.
I only left one app (Sygic) on my Tab. The last few days, I've had no issue with GPS navigation. Everytime I've tried,
I got GPS locks within a few seconds. I've done a few drives (mostly under 1-hr) and everything is normal and accurate.
I've not seen it fail yet.
It isn't 'failing' at start, necessarily. It won't keep lock after stopping and starting.
Can you enter address. navigate to the address. Stop and them do it again?

Like going to work ... going to lunch .. going home .. I fired up the app fresh (I clear recent apps often)
haha.. I had quite a few struggles since day one, so I know how to make it fail.
I can start-close/stop-restart Sygic multiple times without failing. But if I re-enable those (GPS) apps and
switch between them ---> GPS no-longer works.
I have never had a issue using Osmand GPS yesterday. Locked on quickly each time after device was put to sleep about 5 times in a moving car ( i was the passenger at the time).
joined the forum to say i'm having the same issue with GPS (and possibly compass). looks like google is aware so that is at least good.
bought the tablet to use in an in-dash car install. loved it until yesterday and today when i started doing more in car function testing. wanted to test the google maps app out out while driving but the compass oriented me cocked in the wrong direction and spun around like a dradle before gps lost me completely. for a bit i thought omg, maybe it's so cheap because they got rid of the GPS chip.
i have to say i hate the google maps application right now too. the old google navigation app was incredible for "chase view" which gave you. the new google maps app is supposed to integrate the nav feature but you must be on a specified route. it's terrible, going to search for the old APK.

thanks! just downloaded and will try it out (once this gps issue gets fixed).
Suggestion to try by others.
"Go into settings, all apps, locate ‘network location’, clear cache, clear data, reboot and try using GPS again. Seen this behavior on another device where it didn’t like the backed up app data restored from the previous device."
NONE of the "fixes" are permanent. As soon as you start moving it loses your location, even if it hold it for an hour.... IT WILL eventually drop out again. All these "fixes" are a waste of time, i have done every single one posted in all teh forums they have talked about N7s. and it ALWAYS goes back to not working again.
it's just frustrating to have a brand new device that doesn't work properly, and then on top of it to do all these silly fixes and research for none of them to work either. bout to take it back and say forget it.

Useless!!!! I was out on the bike all day and this thing acted up all day. At one point it got stuck on the x after rebooting for no reason. I ended up using my SGSIII as a GPS. I guess I need an BT GPS. I know people say hey mine is working but I just can't believe it really is. Or mine sucks.

"Ok Google" is not reliable

As title suggests, voice recognition has been really unreliable through my daily usage.
If the phone is locked - "Ok Google" never works, yes i have set Smart unlock to unlock through voice.
if the phone is unlocked - "Ok Google" works, but if connected to my car's Bluetooth, it doesn't.
any of you guys can share their experience?

Same issue here. I think it's because of Samsung's aggressive management that won't allow Google Now to run in the background when the screen is off.

I normally have to reboot to get "Okay Google" command to work.
for me ok google works for while, then stops working and a reboot is the only way to fix it. only annoying thing is i need to reboot every other day. this issue doesn't seems to be covered much?

fix for the OK Google issue on S8 & S8+ is to have the software re-flashed by Samsung or one of their retailers such as Best Buy. Other than rooting the device, there is nothing that can be done at the consumer level nor with tech support assistance that will resolve the issue.

what difference would re-flashing the software achieve?
flashing stock firmware can be achieved using odin.
and after rooting what can be done to fix this issue?
I don't know why re-flashing it worked but, it did. I also don't care. The phone works perfectly now. I keep seeing the same remedies over and over on forums such as this and NONE of them worked. Now that my phone is working, I shared what I did to get it fixed. I'm not a techie, I'm a truck driver so, if you said that I can flash stock firmware with Odin, you'd be wrong. Besides, why would I? Samsung screwed it up, they can fix it. It was free and it worked.

Moto voice troubles since Nougat

Ever since Nougat I'm really struggling to train Moto Voice. It just keeps on giving endless problems. I say "OK Moto X" then it says I need more syllables. "Then I try something else, then it says it's too loud in the room, then it says I'm speaking too quietly, then I'm speaking too softly, then I'm speaking too soon and must pause, then it's not sure about my phrase, then I'm speaking too fast...
Just really, really struggling to train this thing!
Is it just me, or what is going on? I didn't have issues like this previously (6.0).
Same problem here, work like s***t. Anyway after try and try i manage to get "activate" as my phrase since others doens't work ok.
The Moto voice app has not yet been updated I wonder if this is an issue related to incompatibility with N
Just searched for this very same problem, omg I cannot get it to work. I actually found it quite useful and it worked flawlessly for me before, I'm currently using googles own ok Google an it works but it sets off everyone else's device ?
I switched to just using the Google Assistant on my XT1575.

Having Some Problems With my PH-1

At this point, I'm feeling a lot of love and hate for my PH-1, but I'm locked in. I'm on the Sprint lease plan and I'm passed the point of returning the thing. So here's the latest issues:
Voice-to-Text: Whether it's in Chrome, Brave, Messenger, Google Assistant or Keep, voice-to-text has the same problem. First of all, when the phone says it's listening, I have to wait a few seconds before saying anything. Otherwise, it'll miss the first few words of whatever I'm about to say. The other problem: If I'm trying to do voice-to-text, it'll take about 5 words and stop taking anymore even though the phone appears to still be actively listening. At that point, I can cancel and then tap the microphone button again. This will allow me to voice-to-text 5 more words. So voice to text is barely usable at this point.
I installed Google Voice, but it won't take over as the default voicemail app. I've dug around in Settings and such, but I can't seem to find where I can change this. Presumably, the install of Google Voice should have taken care of it, but that doesn't appear to have happened. It has all my old voicemail from my prior phone, but nothing since getting the PH-1.
Stays connected to my car and my LG headphones no problem, but has issues losing connection anytime my ASUS Zenwatch 2 runs out of battery. Three times so far, I've had to wipe the watch and reconnect to get the two devices talking to each other again.
Google Keyboard is interesting and all, but it seems to do a great job of registering the wrong keystrokes. Honestly, I'd gotten used to my Samsung keyboard anyways, so if there's an option to map the same second character layout, that'd be ideal. But I definitely need SOME keyboard app that presents large enough keys that my huge hands won't confuse the phone. G Board is as big as I can make it and it's just not enough.

And Google voice hasn't put itself in the Google dialer since it was updated to material design like over a year ago...

I'm so happy for you! You have no problems in your life and nothing bad ever happens to you! Meanwhile, I see post after post after post on this forum where people are on their second or third PH-1 .... because their PH-1 had issues. Sprint's support for the Essential Phone is worse than nonexistent. Essential Phone's own support kinda sucks too. Honestly, this forum is the only resource for useful help I've been able to find period. Apparently, people posting who are frustrated with their new phone offends you. Meanwhile, I will continue to try to make my purchase of a PH-1 as livable as possible.

Google broke the integration more than a year ago.
You will need to install an old version of the app manually.
The version you want is "com.google.android.apps.googlevoice_0.4.7.10.apk".
This is the last version that integrates with any dialer.
make sure you setup not to auto-update or the update will kill the integration.

Thanks, that explains a lot. Weird that they broke the integration. Can't think of a good reason for them to want to do that. Alternately, is there a different voicemail app that would work? Google Voice has it's good points, but if letting an update sneak through breaks it, I don't see the point in using Google Voice. Sometimes updates patch vulnerabilities after all.
Did Google replace Google Voice with something else perhaps?

Just an FYI, I have no issues with latest google voice, integrated with hangouts and used for my voicemail with Verizon after doing the standard *71(googlevoice#) *90(googlevoice#) an *92(googlevoice#). Maybe Sprint has a similar method of call forwarding you can use?
Also, maybe your phone has a hardware issue with a microphone. It wouldn't be the first case. Many of us really don't have an issue with voice to text, so that might be something to RMA about if you can test further.

The issue is not about being able to use it, dialer integration is broken.
Without integration you can't go to the dialer and listen to your VM.
