sorry if this seems a silly question but im after a bit of advice. its regarding storage space left on my unit. as it stands i have left-
device
free storage 83.97 mb
free program 165.47 mb
sd card
free memory 113.67
i have'nt got that much installed on my phone and what i have i try to keep on the sd card but i see i'v used nearly half of the total storage and program space available on my unit, should i be worried or in reality have i still got plenty left?.are there any programes that i can use to tidy up any files im not using or im aware of.
as you can probably tell im pretty new to wm (i'v always had the se/nokia type phones but i love my hd2) so any advice is welcome.cheers.....
As a matter of fact, the stock ROM is not very generous with memory (except maybe RAM).
This might be one of the major reasons why many people prefer "custom ROMs", which can be found here at xda.
Almost all of those custom ROMs offer more memory space, because all the
"bloatware" has been removed. In some cases even more stringent, as even
"unnecessary" language files are no longer existing.
It will strongly depend on your personal needs and way of usage if you run out of memory (or get tight).
with 83 odd meg of internal storage capacity left you are still in a pretty healthy state.
its maybe time to start reading up on all the different roms. thanks for the advice guys.
What can i do to get more? i seem to only have 200mb
any pointers?
custom roms have varying amounts of storage, some are really high, if you are really desperate for that much, try a 576mb rom.
you could also install a microsd card, they are relatively cheap all the way to around 8-16gb's larger cards do work in the hd2 but they get very pricey after this.

576MB roms are for 576MB of RAM, not storage. Doesn't help him.
Anyway yes, there are custom roms with more or fewer preinstalled programs and thus free space, but 200MB is about the norm, you'll have to live with that, use your storage card for most, and... read the forum for hints as there are already 1000's of threads about low internal memory...

ah yes >< forgot about that.
as for the actual low memory thing? what are you doing with your memory?
I find pictures and music should go on an sd card and programs should go on the device storage and I dont seem to have many problems.
I currently have 35 programs showing in my remove programs window (this doesnt show everything) although I could probably delete half of these and not even notice they are gone :S
I have 12 megs free(out of 278 megs) in my device memory (getting kinda low) and 6 gigs used out of 8 gigs on the sd card.
I tend to use groovemobile for music if I have a decent internet connection, although most of that sd card space is music and tomtom maps.
Make sure you delete the stock images that come with the phone (copy to sd card if you wanna keep them) and delete the music that come preloaded. That'l give you a few more MB.
As already said, you wont need to install many things to device memory, just get a decent class of SD card.
internal memory
Is there a way of seeing which programs may have been installed to the onboard memory and whats to the storage microSD? Some kind of app or something? I know there are folders but guess that does not always mean it was installed to the onboard memory.
Search for MTreeSize, good thing to see folder sizes and see what uses more memory than expected.
IC_C (12MB) Can this be deleted
IC_C (12MB)
Can this be deleted without causing problems?
There are several files in the HTC ALBUM folder that are big!
Yes, but it will rebuild itself in no time. Search for HTC album cache on here, there's a fix to move it to storage card.
onboard space
ah thats much better, now i have more spare space than whats used! Awsome!!
Thank you
yeah, do I really need to move app2sd for Galaxy Note? What's benefit if I do this?
I was previously using Nexus One, and of course I need it bcoz not enough internal space. But now Galaxy Note has like at least 14Gb, so I really need a move? Will it save more battery if app2sd?
of the 16gb we are given, only 2gb is allocated to apps. although most apps are smart nowadays and will install the bulk of the game data to the SD card, or in our case, the HDD.
wont really save more battery if you use apps to sd.
and you dont need to install apps to SD. its somewhat integrated into gingerbread. just go to settings, applications, manage applications, tap on the application, and theres a 'move to sd card' button here.
I used a 1Gb partition for apps2sd on my Nexus One, so 2Gb is plenty for me.

oh wtf?! only allocated 2Gb for apps?! that's ridiculous! waste of the rest of free space! bcoz my mp3s are in external 32Gb card and more than enough.
Without any apps2sd for now, I still have 784Mb free....

looks like you've downloaded a lot, lol. just use the apps to sd integrated into gingerbread that i mentioned above.
pretty much all manufacturers stick with 2gb as the general amount of space to allocate for apps. they have to account for the average media user - which will use more music and video than apps, and then the power user - which will use more apps/games than music and videos.
on my old n900, it was possible to resize the apps partition, im sure theres someone out there who knows how to do it for android if you need more space.

Yes, many useful apps for daily use for me. now many new Android apps are in larger size and no app2sd function unless you root it, but I am not gonna root my Galaxy Note. Before I thought it's like iPhone, all spaces can use for apps... Sigh...
I did root for my Nexus One bcoz it had only 500mb for apps @@

Hi Souai, what can you say about this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332244
Someone there says you can't fully utilize the Note's sd card for apps because of the directory structure, although another one was confident that you can indeed install apps to your sd card.

its the same as was on my atrix. not everyone uses SD cards, and SD cards are also removable, so rather than having people hotswap an SD card and lose some of their apps when using another app function, manufacturers have started renaming the onboard storage as 'SDCard' in an attempt to make it more usable for consumers.
so if its like my atrix, moving it to the SD card will just move it to the onboard storage. for the OP, its fine since it will use the other large chunk of the 16gb onboard storage that he hasnt really used yet.
dunno about needing root access to run apps to sd. it ran fine for me on my atrix on froyo without root access. but then due to the labelling structure of the onboard storage, it just moved the data to the onboard storage.
generally, its not an issue unless you think you'll really need more than 16/32gb of apps storage in this case.

I'd hate to see what your app drawer would look like with 32gb's worth of applications installed!

I get ya, but the answer to that potential horror is "folders". I currently use an iPhone 4 and have installed over 250 apps, but I only use 3 home screens - everything is neat and tidy. I'm planning to do the same when I get the Note.
Hi guys, I did a bit of a search but I couldn't find any threads actually discussing the merits of this phone, hence my creation of this thread.
So first off, is this phone even worth using, or should I just give up on it and buy a better one? The internal hardware isn't that great; the only reason I got it is it was cheap, and it's my first smartphone haha. I'm trying to play Ingress on it, but they don't scale their UI at all so it's kind of hard to play on the small screen, and it can be kind of slow as well.
Secondly, what OS would you recommend using? The problem with the default Android OS is the memory partitioning: there's 1GB of memory on the phone, but it's partitioned into System Memory (150MB) and the rest is internal memory. All the preloaded apps are on System Memory, so when they update they fill up the System Memory and I have to uninstall the updates. Also some of the apps I download get installed to System Memory and I can't move them to internal memory, very frustrating.
Looking forward to whatever advice you guys can give me! Cheers.
Use stock OS with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250759, less lag than 4.0.4.

Try SDMERGE
I ran out of storage for new apps a long time ago. My device is kind of useless for new things because there is no internal memory for INSTALLING APPS, even after removing 75% of my apps which includes system apps. There is just no more space. It still has 2gb of internal memory left BUT THAT CANNOT BE USED FOR INSTALLING APPS, stupidly. There are 8GB of total internal storage space.
I have plenty of storage for data. Just not for apps. I have a 32GB SD card as well.
App2SD apps, I maximized all possible data to be moved.
Apps with data larger than 20MB I just deleted the whole apps.
Still no more space.
Additionally, it means I CANNOT use this tablet for things like games, or for storing map data from gopilot live as a backup in case my phone dies. Which is VERY limiting. Especially because I used to like to play games on it but I had to remove all the games to make way for utilities.
Thus I DESPERATELY NEED to be able to install UNLIMITED NUMBER OF APPS using the SD card for internal storage.
I tried the vold.fstab method HERE, but it did not work.
PLEASE HELP!!! THANK YOU!!!
p.s. I WOULD BUY A NEW TABLET WITH MORE MEMORY BUT NO 7.0 INCH TABLET EXISTS THAT IS BETTER THAN THE TAB 4 BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL MAKING HUGE 8.0 and 8.4 INCH TABLETS THAT ARE TOO BIG SO I AM STUCK WITH THE TAB 4.

i'd say you just need test different apps all over and over akd different methods from XDA, i have on my phone sdcard as internal memory but same method wont work on tab 4..... you should use folder mount to move appdata to sdcard and use it from there, it helps if you have big app data on internal sd card.

No I tried that already. It does Not work because of the error "this has been limited due to kitkat so you're not authorized" or something to that extent. It's not an error, it is a limitation of the kitkat (and all subsequent) operating systems. Google did that on purpose to try to force people to have to upgrade their phone.

Cyanogenmod isn't an extreme solution, it runs better than touchwiz IMO and it takes up significantly less memory, which is a fact. It's more like saying, "I don't like Windows," and the reply being, "You should try out Ubuntu," especially since both cyanogenmod, like Ubuntu, is completely free

Waiting for a real solution to the actual problem.
uh if youre not ready to install different rom i guess theres no solution
I'm having the exact same dilemma. In my case, not going to CM (or another rom/firmware/kernel..) is due to the fact that my children use the tablets, so the KidsMode needs to work. I've looked at that one from Zoodles, and its rubbish compared to the Samsung one available on their Galaxy devices. My original post never had any reply other than my own update.
By the way: I'm still searching for a solution to this... If only Samsung would/could release Marshmallow on this tablet, the Adoptable Storage option could be used...
Now, if you can just hold your breath...
lol I know right...?
Full disclosure: I've given up hope of finding a solution that will work with (essentially) stock 4.4.2, so now I'm looking into how to get the TouchWiz framework to run on a rom/kernel that DOES support support an external/internal swap.
Of course, that does nothing to help the OP, but IMO the best solution has already been presented to him: Install a custom ROM that supports what he needs. It's still the best solution since there don't seem to be any TouchWiz-dependent apps he needs.
Years later still no solution

If you are willing to root your device you can use Apps2sd to actually move(link) whole app into sd card.
You'll need to repartition your sd card to do it, but there are good guides to do it.
EDIT:
Oh it's renamed app2sd but here is the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd&hl=fi for it
you can also try link2sd app

I don't know about how limited it is, but it's completly different than native android moving apps to sd. Linking is like actually increasing your devices internal memory(not really but somethign like that). Also it's easiest/(propably)best way to get more memory for apps.
