Nexus 7, Intermittent Connection Problem - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am running Android JellyBean 4.2.1. Nexus 32GB WiFi only version (UK).
Even thou the signal bar on tablet is full 4 bars and I got a stable fibre optic broadband connection, my nexus 7 tablet is for some reason randomly showing what i think looks like an explanation mark that grows bigger on the network bars. It's happening allot and although it seems to be connected to the net it seems to stop sending/receiving data/network traffic and I get timeout errors and I unable to connect but then a few refreshes and all work again. Its happening often.
Anyone know of any known problems, bugs etc and possibly a solution ? I found a thread on Google about people having this problem and people thinks its software related.
Thanks for any help/advice!

Did you do the clear Framework data to force the last OTA? If so, you will have to delete your Google account, reboot and sign back in to your google account and sign into Play. It will work again.

Hi,
I did what you said exactly several times and so far no connection errors in play and web browser but webpages and play content takes quite a while several seconds to load webpages and play content from play app sometimes have to refresh for it to work. My connection is fibre optic 38mbps so it should load faster.
Any possible solutions ?
Thank you,
Mat

I think it is the 4.2 update. It is causing all sorts of problems.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

Hi,
I think it maybe, did not have this before update I don't think anyway. Using apps that uses my internet connection is becoming a nightmare as hardly loads internet content and have to refresh or close app and open again and try loading internet content again. I thought clearing data on Google Framework and removing Google account fixed it but it hasn't.
Great tablet shame about the OS.
Thanks
Mat

Your connection speed on the N7 is determined by your wifi speed and bandwidth, not your fiberoptic connection. Sounds like you would benefit from a factory/data reset. If rooted and you have Titanium Backup, you could do a full backup before the fdr and restore bookmarks, game data, and sms messages afterward. There are also apps on Play that will backup/restore this kind of data. Just don't restore any system data. Your apps can be restored from Play if they don't automatically restore.

my WiFi speed is 65mbps so plenty fast enough, think a factory reset will be needed. Always into rooted or anything.
Thanks!

Hi,
I did a factory data reset via recovery method, wiped cache before hand then installed my apps again but manually, by this I mean I did not let Google restore anything from backups it makes on it servers.
So far everything appears to be OK fingers crossed.
It seems after updating to 4.2.1 it would be good idea for people to do a factory data reset if they are having problems as this has so far not given me any problems as of yet like previously, I will monitor it over the next few days and post back if it stays like this or goes back to being a nightmare. So far everything feels great and works as expected, all bugs seems to have vanished, for now anyway, only time will tell now.
Thanks for your advice, much appreciated!

[Q] PlayStore not working after ROOT

Hello everyone,
I just unlocked and rooted my Nexus 4 using the Toolkit by mskip and noticed that I cannot download anything from the PlayStore.
At first I though the WIFI was broken, but I can surf the web so it's clearly an issue with the market.
I have then used the Toolkit by Wugfresh to bring the phone back to stock but the problem is still there: I cannot download anything from the market! The phone downloaded and installed the 4.2.1 fine but cannot download any of the 57 apps queued in the market.
Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!
Have you tried clearing data? Are the downloads pending?
Go to Settings/Apps/All and clear data of Download Manager.
Try clearing data of the Play store if that doesn't help.

Thanks for the tip: I cleared the data of both Download Manager and Playstore but it doens't work.
I tried to sign out and back in too. Still no luck.
Unbelievable.
I doubt it has anything to do with root, but install the following gapps and in pretty sure your problem will be resolved.

[Gapps][Unofficial][4.2.1 JOP40D]~Custom Gapps Package by Me~
I had a number of problems with the Play store, keyboard, and camera but after flashing these gapps, all is good.

Upon further investigation and trials, I currently find myself in this situation:
- Playstore works both with WIFI and GSM but can only download content via GSM (no Idea why!!)
- Everything else works fine over WIFI (and GSM).
So for whatever reason PlayStore let me browse the catalogue via WIFI but won't let me download/update anything unless I switch to GSM.

thanks but I would like to understand what happened an why to the original app first! :good:
Are your time and date correct?
Sometimes that makes the play store not work

Also, in addition to the apps mention, also clear data for "Google Services Framework"
If that doesn't work try clearing your /cache partition, possibly even /data/dalvik-cache and reboot

reboot your router, i have had this happen on sensation and gnex. it was an issue with my router. pull the plug for 30 seconds and let sync back up
I tried that already earlier but didn't work. Will give it another go.
any update? im stumped too! dam wifi is broken!!! now can't even do anything
I rooted using mskip's toolkit (with busybox but on stock recovery) and also had a wifi issue. I was already on the latest OTA (4.2.1) before doing anything and at that time the wifi was connecting just fine. After rooting, the wifi was not connecting to the same signal as it had been before. When it finally did connect, I was also unable to access the Play Store but could browse the internet just fine. I turned wifi off, restarted the phone, then used mobile data to update the Google system apps. After that, the Play Store was working with wifi connected. Wifi is still having trouble connecting to a "fair" strength signal where before it connected without an issue so unsure on that but Play Store at least is back when the wifi signal is strong. Hope this helps.
Nexus4 want work with my router running wddrt.. .trying to trouble shoot it
It connects strong signal but just want dload apps. Can't do speedtest. I can browse google playstore but won't dload apps atfer 10x cancel it might install app by shear luck.... my wifi works on other routers, places

Wi-Fi Direct with Beam

So I've really been enjoying my new nexus 4. But I've if the things that's bothered me the most is the poor implementation of beaming. For example when I try to beam a 30 second HD video I recorded on my nexus onto my brother's identical nexus 4, it starts up a Bluetooth connection. Am I missing something? I thought it was supposed to create a Wi-Fi direct connection between the two, which would been much much faster.

I tried for several hours last night trying to get wifi direct to work between my Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 and nothing seemed to work. I then found this app and it worked like a champ:

Bumping this.
How exactly do I use that app.. is it a necessity that both phones have to have the same app running? could someone please run me through the process? I need to transfer 100 mb files between my n4 and the gnex.
Took me a while but I finally got it too work. After adding the viewing device to the network I rebooted the source device (nexus 4). I was then able to see the target device from my Nexus 4. Then you send an invite from the nexus 4 to the source device. Accept and once connected you are golden. YouTube app ob nexus 4 actually then asks which device should display the video. I was also able to share media using BubbleUPnP. Hope that helps someone

You need to install Wi-Fi Direct on both devices. Make sure both have NFC on.
You can approach the problem in 2 ways (really only 1):
1) Link both phones to each other by directly accessing the app from the drawer first. Once a connection has been established, use your file explorer to locate the file (I use ES File Explorer) and long press it. You'll get a dialog box. Locate "Share" and then click on "Wi-Fi Direct". You'll notice it's sending when you see the Wi-Fi Direct icon in the notification bar.
2) The process is the reverse of 1; locate the file, long press and then Share > Wi-Fi Direct. It'll prompt you to establish a connection.
Speeds I've seen at most is 39Mbit between my GS3 and N4.
Be aware, certain devices don't like to accept invites. In this case it'll error out or not communicate with the other device. Send the invite from the other device instead. If it reaches this situation, the program may be buggy (both refuse to communicate with each other) until you force close the app using a task manager and disable/re-enable NFC.
An example...my GS3 doesn't like to accept invites from the N4 so I'm forced to send invites from the GS3 to the N4 instead.

Android Beaming is typically done using Bluetooth (for small files like pictures), hence why you see the Bluetooth icon pop up. I've sent files between my phones and thought it wasn't sending files. It's just ridiculously slow as is the nature of Bluetooth. Random tidbit here -- Samsung implemented their own Android Beaming protocol (S-Beam) to use Wi-Fi Direct instead of the Bluetooth connection.
Thanks a lot man! Got it working.. although having an app for it is still sort of clumsy. Wonder when google will finish up what is incomplete

[Q] Google Now no connection !! Plz help

Hello, I am running the stock firmware on my nexus 4. I am not even rooted. I am connected to WiFi and my google now says no connection.

I have pretty much the same problem!
I just realized mine isnt either. Stock Rom, Rooted, TWRP and just flashed franco M1 yesterday. Hmmmmm
Having this issue for months now. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Had gone through many forums and no solution yet. Counting days when I get back to England because I believe it has something to do with my ISP.

[Q] Facebook Checkin Not Working?

Couldn't find any similar threads, but I've found a problem which seems to be unique to our phone. If I'm trying to add a new check in location in the Facebook app it doesn't work. It simply says that the search returned no results. Everyone else I know has the option to add a new location. Even my old phone was able to. I checked on my wife's galaxy and we are using the same version of the FB app. Can anyone confirm this on their Nexus? Any solutions? I've attached a screenshot so you know what I mean.
Try resetting the app from the settings menu... Clear the cache data and everything and make sure gps is on that's all i can think of right noe
Sent from my Nexus 4
I did a complete reinstall if the app. GPS shouldn't matter, its very weird.
Bump
Anyone at all can confirm this happens to them??
This does not happen to me at all. And just as a test I was able to search and add a new place. No issues. Maybe reinstall fb.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Thanks for checking. I reinstalled twice already. Are you able to tell me your location settings?
All my settings in Facebook are checked. 1 hour sync interval. Location enabled etc. Have you checked your location settings on android itself to make sure its on.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, everything is on. Very strange
OK, so here is something weird. I turned on WiFi and it works fine, but on T-Mobile H network it gives me the "no places found". Why would that be??
I never had that issue at all even on hspa aka T-Mobile network or WiFi. I just wonder if your an isolated problem. Or it won't work via mobile to add a new place.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
What's weird is that it works on WiFi. Then when I turn off WiFi it still works. But if I restart my phone it won't work again until I connect to WiFi. Annoying!

Wi-Fi notification icon has turned orange after a reboot and now all Google services

Hey,
I've got an issue on my Nexus 4 where my wifi notification icon what used to appear white has turned orange and now all my Google Services no longer work... neither do push notifications as it's unable to connect somehow so apps like PushBullet aren't working either.
It all happened after I rebooted my phone...
I've tried:
• Clearing Data
• Fix permissions via recovery
• Rebooting several times
• Enabling Flight Mode & rebooting then disabling and rebooting again.
• I've tried rebooting the router (it's not the router as my Nexus 10 and other devices all work fine)
I've had the same problem on Paranoid Android which I used to fix by flashing the rom and gapps again (dirty flash) but I switched to stock so don't know what to do or how to fix.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

An orange icon means that there is no connection to the Google services. Try if you can connect to a different network, otherwise you will have to flash a new radio.

Thanks for your reply, It was working fine just before I rebooted and then it just stopped, browsing on baconreader, tapatalk messaging over kik, facebook...etc all work fine and I still have an internet connection of sorts but the google stuff doesn't, trying different networks doesn't help either.
How can I reflash stock without losing anything?
I fixed it by flashing system.img but obviously that meant i had to resetu root, xposed, adblock...etc which is a nussance
Bump, anyone know how to stop this from happening it's happened 5 times since I originally posted this.
It happens when I reboot occasionally and the only way I know how to fix it is flash system.img

Why don't you start fresh and flash all of the factory images including userdata partition (obviously this will wipe your phone clean, do make a backup of your sdcard contents). Might wanna factory reset after flashing all of the images too.

Hi there
Does it work until you receive an update of Google Play Services through Play Store? I'm currently having the same issue but with my mobile data connection, not WiFi. I'm trying to get to the bottom of it.
An orange signal meter means you're not connected to Google Play Services. You can check the status by typing this in to your dialler:
*#*#426#*#*
Problems are usually due to the network blocking or closing the Google Play Services TCP port 5228
You could try checking your wireless router's firewall setup.
