Get applications like you can get for the iPhone?
I have just had a 'demo' of a load of free apps for the Iphone on a colleagues Iphone and I must admit I was impressed and very surprised, I had always discounted the Iphone as an option for me due to the many (well documented) short commings for power users. However after seeing such applications as the Tioti TV+ which is so quick and smooth and lets you send remote record requests to a Sky+ box - somehting I have been desperate for. Along with great film and cinema applications and many other very neat applications which aren't available on Windows Mobile, I am begining to wonder if I made the wrong decision in purchassing my touch HD??!
Just thought I would share my thoughts with you all....I am sure I will get a barrage of abuse for this post, but would love to know if we think the future of windows mobile may include some more intuitive and consistently looking applications.
P.S. If anyone knows of a SKY+ remote record app which is designed for Windows Mobile I would love to know!
A related question from a relative novice when it comes to downloading and installing apps... is there anything like the iPhone appstore for Windows mobile apps - where applications are listed with screenshots, descriptions, what phones/resolution they work on, etc? I've seen lots of great home-grown apps, and lots of vendor websites that seem to be pedalling a specific product, but haven't seen anything that attempts to bring it all together?
Thanks,
Dave

I don't use Sky+ and have no idea on apps for this - but, I understood it is possible to control the Sky+ box remotely just via an SMS ?
Another possible option is a Slingbox ?
Try also pocketgear.com for applications: http://www.pocketgear.com/en_US/html/index.jsp
and, Softpedia: http://handheld.softpedia.com/#categories-soft
A five second search on google / sky produced this:
http://anytime.sky.com/mobile.aspx
And clicking through to the supported handsets only lists a few manufacturers and I don't think there are any WM devices.
I think it's a Java app? It might work (I don't have Sky, so can't test!).

Perhaps you should read on as there is no compatible version for Windows Mobile 6.1 (HTC Touch HD)!

You need to analyse your own requirements before deciding if iphone or HD is right for you.
For me, the lack of GPS software (google map doesnt qualify), office applications, user swappable spare battery, inability to support stylus, and lack of choices in software keyboard in iphone make it an unacceptable choice.
Another person's need might be different.

I've installed the JAVA components and they work on Windows Mobile 6.1 - the issue is that the software expects you to have a keyboard (or a keypad) attached to input various details .... so you can't use it on a Touch HD !
Thank you for all your comments and suggestions, however I don't beleive sites like handandgo etc are anything like the Iphone Appstore, the apps cost a lot more and you have no idea of compatability. I don't beleive you can easily browse for apps on your handset, like you can with for example the Iphone.
I am not saying I think the Iphone is the best choice of phone, but they certainly got somehting right with the app store and wondered if Microsoft will listen up and provide developers an easy route to dev similar apps for windows mobile?!
I Have tried all the Java Sky remote apps before and as you have spotted they do not work with a touch screen device if it doesn't have hardware buttons too. Also even if it did work it is not very user freindly - I was using this as a example of a really usefull app, which I am amazed has not been built for Windows Mobile touch devices too....it just seems weird why there are so many great little apps for the Iphone, which are so easy to download and browse though, yet it has only been about a relatively short time in comparison with Windows Mobile....I find this most annoying!
Anyway, thanks again for your input

You're welcome and good luck with your choice - still an Iphone ?
Yes, the apps in WM are expensive and there is no simple app store. Rumours are around that MS will fix this.
Having said that, the app developers for WM are doing some great work. I have loads of apps on my HD (see other forum posts I've made recently).
I would like a TV guide app that brings in channels from across Europe. That is, one that would allow me to select my favorite channels.
Sorry the Sky+ thing did not work, as I said, I don't have any experience with this. I'm surprised the keyboard SIP did not work when using the java app.

Thank you - will take a look around that and the others suggested by people. I suspect my response will be similar to jrshodges - not overly clear on compatibility and quite expensive. But I won't be pessimistic...
Thanks again.

Cheers Dave, no - not an Iphone...yet...I am happy to persevere with my WinMo device for the forseeable as I do belive I would miss, like others Sat Nav (which by the way I use TomTom and it looks and works great) ease of Exchange sync etc etc.
I just wanted to rant for a bit about the lack of decent and easily accesable apps for WinMo....in the hopes someone would point me in the direction of a lovely MS App Store (wishful thinking!). I hope you are right and wee do see something from MS soon, although I guess they will wait and in include it in Windows Mobile 6.5 or 7 - although by the sounds of it that won't be anytime soon :-(
And if anyone does ever find a decent TV guide and Sky + App then please remember this thread and post it for us!
Its also worth mentioning that although there are a lot of iPhone apps, and yes they are cheap, most are useless eye candy that have about 2 minutes worth of value in them.
Check out my list of apps here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3116988#post3116988
Also, of course, the wiki page:

I don't know much about the Apple apps. But, I can say that some of these WM apps are really serious work and clearly have had lots of effort and thought applied to them.
My latest addition is Pocket Stars - a bit of astronomy fun for me, but a serious app for enthusiasts.
The iphone is for simple folk. The app store is for simple folk. IE it works.
WM is bit more complicated but gives those of you willing to use it a lot more freedom.
I do wish there were more apps and games for the HD.
I have both the Iphone and HD at home (well the Mrs has the iphone) once jailbroken the iphone is truly amazing and I almost wish i had one instead, but them my mrs reminds me why i dont have one, I would get board in no time. I played with hers (iphone that is) for a couple of days over the xmas break then went back to playing around on my HD.
Its still early days for the HD and remember the IPHONE has been around for quite some time now.
Give it a little time and the HD will be up there with the iphone, you already starting to see some really nice app/games coming out.
My only other wish would be some way to get multi-touch to work on HD as it makes games very playable on iphone.
The problem with Microsoft trying to replicate the iPhone App Store is that Apple have 2 different handsets to maintain, which are practically identical except for the GPS/3G.
There are many different versions of WM in use, with many software customisations by handset manufacturers and operators and varying hardware abilities.
I'm not sure how it would be possible to test the full range of devices that a particular application may work with. On top of that, people may or may not have updated the firmware for their device, which can break (or fix) applications.
I'd love to see it, but it's certainly more difficult supporting hundreds of different handsets customised by many operators rather than 1 and a bit
I saw on here that someone is working very hard to make a form of "app store" that will work on phones (credit to them for the effort) its called Gecko...i found the link on the forum. Give it time, I think it will come...
I've used the app where for a while now. I was wondering if any of you could suggest any excellent alternatives to this kind of program? I recently installed poynt when I couldn't find where in the market. Later I found where in the sprint section of the market. I played around with both and of course neither are perfect and have their shortcomings. I don't like how more apps are now wanting to know too much about you or are gathering info behind your back and using it for marketing or for other companies. It's getting more difficult to find apps that aren't sneaky like that. I was very surprised in an article I've read recently talking about some really popular apps are putting their noses in areas of your phone and using that info. I remember astrid and the weather channel and coupons were a few that I can remember that the article said are not behaving themselves.
I know that as time progresses and technology gets better, that some of the things we preferred and took for granted are being splayed out on the internet for anyone who knows where to look to find it.
Where is a legit app, they need location etc to give u local stuff.
Sent from my Epic 4G
I know. I'm just wondering about other choices that do the same thing, maybe even better. Sometimes where can be a pain in the.
Yelp, places, and urbanspoon are all good apps. Yelp especially has the monocle feature which is alternate reality... by pointing the camera down a street it shows name location and rating of businesses
Do you get annoyed and frustrated when you see someone on the Web offering a service such the web based Sky TV or on line stock market trading but discover that it only works on the iPhone or iPad? The Android hardware is as good as, and perhaps even better, so the problem with lack of applications must be due to software. I suspect the bloatware has a lot to do with it and the different phone/tablet software. Perhaps with ICS things will change, but I think Google needs to get involved to solve this problem. Else we will continue to lack application support for Android hardware. There seems to be iPhone/iPad applications being offered by everyone on the Web, but very few Android.
Dear Gaugerer,
Totally agreed... We have better hardware but low quality or lack of similar apps compared to ios... Hope google can change it with ics...
Kind Regards,
Hello guys,
For those using the official 2.3 rom I would like to shar some apps I find very useful and I think some might also miss from custom roms:
- QuickPic
Very good Image and Video Gallery and almost identical to MIUI's.
The Gallery available in stock rom is just a big failure and almost nude of options.
This one is just absolutly complete and good!
- Quick Boot
Miss the 4 way reboot menu from custom roms? Well not anymore....
- Moboplayer
A powerful video player.
- Go Launcher EX
For me the best Laucher. Very custobizable, easy and fast.
Also, many many many free apps, widgets, themes, etc
- TunIn Radio
Very good online radio app.
Well, hope you enjoy.
If you wish to share your apps with others just post

why is 360 a bad company?
I'm using this alternative launcher:

it's fast, light and highly customisable.
Also I'd like more ligux tools, instead of quick boot for reboot menu:

My opinion will be subjective, so please read the following stories with your clear mind. If you still trust 360Safe/Qihoo company, you can still use their products.
Here's some true stories occured in China internet history:
An evil man - HongYi Zhou(周鸿祎)
Evil #1: At the early internet age in China, there was a IE browser helper object called 3721 Internet Assistant - the most notorious malware developed by 3721 company - HongYi Zhou's company. Evil behavior: force install, hard to uninstall, ad popup, etc...
Evil #2: Yahoo China acquired 3721 company at 2003, and 3721 Internet Assistant renamed to Yahoo Assistant. It should change to nice under a big company, right? NO! it still act as evil as it was, all the evil behaviors on 3721 still exist on Yahoo Assistant.
Evil & Ridiculous #3: Zhou left Yahoo later, and become CEO of an "unsafe" company - 360Safe, then 360 claim Yahoo Assistant is malware! What kind of man (especially a business man) will do that? You created a son and raise it with your full energy, then one day, you said your son is a freak, and you will kill it, an evil man did this! I think this touched the bottom line of moral as a human being, and Zhou did it.
An evil company - Qihoo/360Safe company
3QWar2010: Year 2010, the QQ-360 war (we called ThankYou/3Q war by transliteration) was initiated by Qihoo/360Safe company. Basically, 360PrivacyGuard monitored any process named QQ.exe even if you rename notepad.exe to QQ.exe, and give its users an alert said QQ.exe is scanning your files etc... and 360QQGuard act like a trojan, it inject QQ software to remove advertisment in QQ software and blocked autoupdate service of QQ and replace the default browser launcher in QQ to their own 360Browser. What kind of "safe" company did such an unsafe trojan software? 360 did! If you ask why, I will say because their boss is Zhou. Fortunately, Qihoo lost the lawsuit at last.
I won't say "once a criminal, always a criminal", but I would say "dog eat ****, it never changed, it never will"(狗改不了吃屎 in Chinese). If you're an Android fans before and today you suddenly becomes an iPhone fans, you should check your dream first to see if you are 《Inception》ed by Leonardo before you're sure you really becomes an iPhone fans. That's my personal opinion on this company. For me, I never trust this man and this company, and you?
That's why I don't suggest you to use any software products developed by 360, personally.
Apology for my bad English, wish you can understand it.

Thank you for your explanation
Even though I don't know anything about HongYi Zhou(周鸿祎), I have to agree with him about the 360safe company. I've been working with computers since back in the 286(80286) days, both software and hardware wise. I'm also an American living in China, and I've used a lot of "chinese" computers while I've been here. This 360Safe software is really strange stuff. They use it in place of IE here (not that I like IE) and for other stuff. I don't know what it is about this software, it just acts strange and my years of computer experience tell me to stay away from it.
Let me give you an example, the one that sealed the deal for me. There is an android app by 360safe. I won't write the name because it's probably banned on XDA forums and I'd rather not get banned for writing it. It is a program for downloading android warez and will check for new update on those warez. It's essentially an illegal version of Android market, they even say so themselves:

With huawei handset, if you are like me, bit tired that every custom rom has that one thing that does not work, or even if you are extremely like me and decided in the end to just keep the original .32 kernel Froyo, Root Explorer or ES filemanager on rooted system is a must.
All those huawei's default apps, crap, so much crap, and some even not usable for international users. Worse even, you cannot uninstall any of it. And some things are confusing, like having a huawei music, and android default music app. Personally I removed both replacing music with newest google music. I personally like rootexplorer for the job, you can explore inside APK files and find what ones have .huawei in their com line so you do not accidentally delete actually useful piece of software.
Thanks for the tip with quickpic. I really long after briefly trying MIUI wanted a seperate app for gallery (I would like option to choose manner the pictures are sorted by) - and now I probably found it.
Thanks all of you very much for these very usseful sharings and applications and programs...
QuickPic is fantastic app.

FriendCaster facebook is also a great app. If you check running apps you will se that official facebook app uses 24 or more MB of RAM and stays at running processes even when you dont use it while FriendCaster only uses 10MB and goes to cached processes if you dont use it. And it also has nicer UI than official app

You may already heard that Apple banned Qihoo/360 from their App Store recently.
Apple Bans Qihoo Apps From iTunes App Store (penn-olson)
China’s Qihoo 360 Says Its Mobile Apps Removed From Apple Store (Bloomberg)
Qihoo 360: Apps Should Be Back On Apple App Store Shortly (The Wall Street Journal)
Hi everyone
I haven't posted / lurked the firums here since back when I baught my original nexus one phone.
Shortly after that the iPhone 4 and eventually the 4s came out and I have found it hard to go back to android ( I liked the simplicity of iOS)
Lately i am getting over the struggle between Apple and the hackers that allow customers do do what they want with their device. ( I always have my iPhone hacked just so I can run the tweaks apple don't provide)
The apple tv pairs quite nicely with my iPhone and I have also hacked that to run plex so I can stream from my pc.
Development for plex on apple tv is slow and usually buggy due to apples restrictions and every update means developers need to wait for a jailbreak before they can continue development..
Which brings me to the point of this post. The nexus q just might be what I need to come back to android.
These are what would convince me to come back
1. Streaming from pc not just from google play ( I believe it's already being worked on / almost done )
2. Plex / other apps like airtight working ( I believe they should eventually)
3. This would be the icing on the cake. Being able to start a movie / tv show that is on my pc over 3G. Eg. Tge girlfriend is at home and wants to watch a movie but is not too tech savvy so I load plex or a similar app on my phone while I'm at work and select a movie from my library that is on my pc at home and it starts playing on the nexus q!
Should these become a reality I would buy a galaxy s3 and a nexus q right away.
What other things would MAKE you buy a nexus q?
Well only two reasons prevent me from buying one.
Nexus Q is not available in Europe
No Music/Movie/TV Shows in the german Play store
So without the ability to stream whatever I want without the Play Store, it is quite useless at the moment. As soon as stable Custom Roms allow me to stream over WiFi and/or run XBMC I'll import one.
I like the Design, the basic Idea and well, Android. I just don't get why Google kind of messed this up by leaving it up to the Community to make this Ball of any use.
I am hoping the awesome devs have this thing cracked wide open with opportunity soon.
As for the leaving it to the community i kind of like the idea. Its like Google saying we trust the community and don't want to influence them one way or another so they gave them pretty much an empty slate to work with.
You can do music. vpn into music.google then it activates.

I have activated music, however I can't order anything since checkout does not let me buy stuff with my credit card. Besides that I'd have to use a proxy 24/7 which slows down everything. That is not the kind of "experience" google wants to deliver and I don't want to have it either.
It is time that Google goes global with those things, can't be that hard...

My guess is the problem lies with the content deals being restricted by geographic region. Blame the content owners.

I say a realistic price would spur my purchase. $99.
Frankly, with my PC connected to my TVs and audio receiver already, and my phone, tablets, etc already able to connect to my PC and/or TV, I just don't see an advantage to this device.
I'm sure the new nexus q will have some awesome features, I'm not sure about the ones you need but the wonderful thing about android is I'm sure one of our great developers will make that all possible. I have the q and I like it, I'm definitely going to need some more features to really love it but what I have now is great... Especially because it's free.
The new one will most likely be cheaper and have more features I think that it will be better than the Apple tv.

Samsung Phones
If you own Samsung devices, just get allshare.
I have a ps3 and I can stream content to it via Wi-Fi from my PC or my nexus 7.... really no reason for a Q. If I were to get it, it would be because it looks cool.

+1 I was pretty excited about the Q when I first saw it. I liked the design, the size of it etc but the reviews had me thinking I was better off with my PS3 set up.
hey
has anyone hacked one of these to do other things
Someone needs to buy/donate one of these for a capable dev for Christmas.

Of course. The thing that I did immediately was get SqueezePlayer running on it. This allows the Q to play local music over the network in just about any format (e.g. mp3, 24-bit flac, etc.). Control is handled by an app on your phone/tablet like Orange Squeeze, Squeeze Commander, Logitech Squeezebox Controller, or by pointing your browser to the Logitech Media Server's web interface. Oh, by the way, this also works with Squeezebox apps (e.g. Spotify, Pandora, Rhapsody, Slacker, MOG, etc.). Checkout the list here: http://www.mysqueezebox.com/appgallery
The Q has a ton of potential right out of the box and is easily worth what it is going for on eBay these days - if the user is savvy enough to exploit its potential.
I think the Q was the perfect device for a place like a bedroom where you'd otherwise just have a simple shelf unit (or I do at least). It's more convenient and a bit cleaner than always connecting your phone to the aux input. Plus, it's nice to be able to control it remotely.
The only thing is that it's too expensive. It's priced as a high-end device, but in most of us already have a "high-end" solution for this sort of thing (ie: a PC or similar) which can do a lot more. A device like the Q needs to be [just a bit] cheaper so that it can compete with a shelf unit. Though I realize I'm not the first one to say this.
