[Q] Nexus 7 screen diamond-ing - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I recently bought a nexus 7 and in general I'm pretty pleased with it. However, just today which is about 4days after purchase I realized that my screen has little diamonds that were visible at a certain angle and most obvious when the screen is off. My question is whether this behavior is normal and whether I should take it for repair since it's still under warranty. It's not rooted and there isn't a screen protector for more information. Thanks.
Edit : diamonds are 5mm each

Under certain light conditions there appears to be marks in the glass and it's all diamonds tesselated together. A photo doesn't show anything but ill be uploading one in a while

I've never noticed anything like that.

Doesn't show any of the diamond-ing I saw but here it is. I could only see it when there were many lights around and only when viewing at an certain angle.
Edit : Forgot attachment

i dont think images will allow us to see the problem, maybe even point them out with a stylus ,you could use a phone to make a video panning around views, to clearly display the problem and youtube it here :good:

yes this is normal..... no worries.. new screens usually have this
you only get to see them under certain life conditions and I'm pretty sure these will fade away with wear & tear.. I used to see them when I bought my N7.... not anymore today... enjoy them

Alright. Thanks for the info.

I think you're just seeing the digitizer.. Pretty normal to see it under certain conditions. Mainly with the screen off though. You shouldnt really see anything with the screen on.

Screen mod LCD

After hearing this news about the new screens coming to the nexus one it got me thinking. Will i be able to purchase an after market nexus one SLCD and install it on my "OLD" Nexus one, if not why?
We probably won't know until someone actually gets their hands on a Nexus with the SLCD and decides to disassemble it to make sure everything is the same to know if it's possible. But screen replacement is always pretty risky so unless you know what you're doing, I wouldn't try it anyways.
To me the question is why would you even want LCD over amoled. Amoled is better. They are only using LCD for lack of supply.
yeah i would never try doing that. i will get someone to do it for me and have them be responsible for any mistakes they make!
yeah i doubt anyone will tare down their N1 unless they break it...

well my reason is i like being able to see my screen in the morning while on the bus. Its really about give or take in this situation. Its nice having a really nice screen with the deep blacks at night but at the end of the day i want my screen to be visible with out seeing my reflection while I'm out side..

exactly this guys knows what im talking about!
but if there was a way to kinda provide a type filter on the screen that would help reduce the reflectiveness of the screen and not by Anti Glare, glare is not the problem its mainly reflections
Super-AMOLED displays are AMOLED displays with an integrated touch function..

Ah, ok, that makes more sense. I don't know if it would help at all as I haven't tried miself, but reflected light is mostly polarized, maybe getting light sunglasses with polarized lenses would improve readability?
I just tried that, it doesn't seem to work, what almost sort of worked was putting my sun glasses on the screen and that improved the visibility very considerably. I dont know the UV rating for my glasses but only down side is that my screen a tone darker with the phone set on "auto".

Well, at the end of the day the night starts, so the AMOLED screen in your N1 will do it just fine!
Lol lol you got me there but can someone have a answer for my filter question ?

[Q] circles?

Hey guys, i just recently got the transformer and i was wiping fingerprints off with a microfibre cloth when I noticed two perfect circles near the center of the screen. The screen was off and they were outlined in black. Anyone knowwhat im talking about? Is thisnormal or a defect? Thanks
I have never seen these circles. Did someone use your tablet as a coaster.
I don't have any on mine. Can you see them while the screen is on? What revision is your hardware?
Lol noone used it as a coaster and i cant see them when the screen is on. How so i check revsion? Thanks

They are eyes, Big Brother is watching... Sounds like a defect, can you take a picture and post it?
i wish I could but all I see in the picture is my own reflection. I'm checking out the tf101 on display at best buy as I'm writing this but it doesn't seem to have them, then again maybe they only appear in direct sunlight. Hmmm
Do you see them after you blink? Have you looked at the sun lately? LOL
Checked ours and don't have this.
I'm exchanging it for another, I've got a few dead pixels and some light bleed as well so I might as well

Black ink marks

Hey guys I'm sue most if not all our you know about the black ink marks with the SGS III. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to take the phone back and get a new one but now I'm not sure because I hear that almost all the SGS III handsets have them. How many of you have taken yours back and was it worth it?

You can only see them when it's dark. At first I didn't think it would be a big deal but last night I opened my message app and I could clearly see them.
Edit: has to be a black background.

I have none at all. I used the texting app and andftp.
I didn't have any on mine, though waiting now on my new ordered phone.
Hmm well I'm going to be exchanging mine in a few days.

I noticed a couple on mine, but they really are only noticeable in total darkness on a black background. If they get worse I'll consider getting it replaced, but its such a minor issue, it doesn't seem worth the hassle of a replacement.
The screen is amazing compared to my OG Epic.
They are "normal" for amoled screens. Ive had about 12 razr/razr maxx and everyone had it to a certain extent. They never got worse. As long as you dont have the black line running top to bottom you should be fine.

I don't look for stuff like this. I just did and don't see anything.
can you describe these black lines? I haven't noticed it on my phone just yet...but I dont knwo what im looking for?

Try using this background turn off the lights and see if you can spot the splotches.

Here's how to test:
1) Download Display Tester, Go to Colors, then Dead Pixel.
2) Swipe the screen to the black color Page.
3) Go into a dark closet and look for anything weird on the screen.
I'm pretty sure that everyone who posted here will not have a perfect screen.
I have a couple but never notice them unless the screen is super dark...not too worried unless I notice them under normal conditions.
Here's an idea; if you have to test for something under extremely particular circumstances and don't notice it otherwise maybe you shouldn't go looking for a reason to make yourself unhappy.
Just a thought.
If you stand on a chair holding the phone at 37 degree angle while watching a specific Nickelback video and get a weird tint...don't do it?

I noticed a few splotches on day one, but just now after looking at the almost black test image I couldn't see anything at any angle or lighting conditions. Is it possible that this goes away over some time?

If you ever watch a dark movie, you will notice it. It can be irritating to say the least.

I wasn't looking for them. I didn't even know they existed. I actually noticed them one night when I was texting. It sucks that some have them and some don't... I would like to be one of the few that doesn't if you know what I mean
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
Yeah, I can definitely understand being irritated if you see it during normal use, it just seems like some people (big thread on this in the international section too) go looking for it. Personally unless if actually seen it during my normal usage I'd never go looking for some flaw that I'd then always know was there.
That was what I was getting at, just to clarify.

[Q] Strange vertical lines on brand new device

Hi guys.
Just recieved my brand new Nexus 4. Haven't rooted anything yet but I can notice some strange vertical "lines" of no colour. You can just say they are present and they give some weird discoloration, seen especially in the Settings menu,
Also noticed that my Antutu 3.0 closed itself (dunno why... it's 2GB of RAM...) only once and after one of several Antutu benchmarks there were some red lines... rectangles or some other stuff moving across the screen while in multitasking menu.
Now I'm a bit worried aboy the lines especially. Does it mean that I've just got a faulty device
Please check your Nexus 4's: just set the brightness to maximum and go to the Settings menu. If you see such not moving vertical lines (they are slight but still enough noticeable to see!) please report.
I live in Poland and I really would not want to RMA it since I would have to send it back to US...
EDIT: To add, the lines are especially seen on grey background, if it matters. But I can barely see them on my main screen too... I've also thought about the protective foil which is still present on both the front and back of my Nexus, but I don't think it may be causing it...
That's almost a description of the digitizer grid. Normally if it's at all visible it would require direct sunlight at specific angles. It would appear as metallic dots in vertical lines that reflect the sunlight. Perhaps the digitizer got bonded to the glass incorrectly? Give it a few days and see, it's well known that some bonding issues stabilize after a short while. If it's still very noticeable and bothers you, RMA the phone.

I'm almost sure it's not digitizer. I've seen it a few times on my dad's Xperia Neo V, and it just looks totally different. Also, I really can't see any dots. The thing that bothers me is the lines seem to be standing in their place all the time... I haven't seen this yet on any phone,
But, as you said, I'm giving it a few days. Also, I'll compare the screens when my 2nd Nexus arrives, so I'll find out if it's an issue or is it just normal (if it really CAN be normal...).
not in any particular order. factory reset it. get z-device test from the play store and run a test on the screen. dont run benchmarks on this phone. many people are having issues. and dont overclock. people are bricking their phones. i think they overheat.
Shouldn't be anything to worry about
Anyone got these lines or am I the only one to worry about them... :/ ?

Are you able to get a picture for us to see and compare?
I have lines, more like dots when angling the phone. They look like solar panel reflection, as a description. Only visible under strong sun light.
I also see rectangle impressions at certain angles;
-CC
Here it is.
They're a little less noticeable in reality (I wanted to show them clearly), but they are. It becomes really annoying especially on one-colour backgrounds (greys!) and when swiping screens from one side to another.
Maybe it will cure itself? I really wouldn't like to do an RMA since, as I already mentioned, I live in Poland, and it would be pain to send it back to US and wait another months for new one (likely with some issues too...).
Please report whether you've got these.
PS. I also see those rectangles, but only at a very specific angle, and these are really not noticeable at all. All that bothers me are these lines...
I also get these lines when I turn the brightness up high
So I guess I'm not alone with this (issue?). If anyone spots the lines please report. It's really important to me as I'll be living with this device for probably a year or so and I really don't want to know that my phone is defective...
It's so sad; except lines, the phone is absolutely perfect; no overheating, no earphone buzz (at least not noticeable during calls at all), no yellow screen spots, no flickering, decent battery life... And now this.
Crap. Maybe that's just another "Nexus 4 feature" ?
Got my 2nd Nexus today and it's also got that strange banding. Guess it's somehow just normal...
You're seriously whining about this?? Really?!

Not entirely. It becomes noticeable mainly in dark rooms, and I really like to browse the Web in my bed on my Nexus 4
I guess I am becoming used to it now. It starts to be less noticeable, especially outdoors where it can't be seen at all. So I'll just stick with that and probably keep the phone.

I am experiencing the exact same issue you are describing and am worried myself. I just opened up my phone today. Did you end up RMAing the device? With people claiming that this is one of the best displays out there, it seems like more people would notice this problem, especially since it is so noticeable from the settings menu.
Here's a picture of the screen banding.
Yeah same issue here guys ... Already some post about it. I'm used to see thèse now but very visible at high light and grey or setting background.

So do all nexus 4s have this issue or should we be RMAing our devices?
i have this too...
why does iPhone 5 get display from lg and dont have this issue but lg themselves do?
strangely apple can handle lg's screens better than themselves
kind of sucks...
this is one of those things that once you've seen it you cant unsee it
i also have a little bump on my aluminum bezel you cant see it but everytime i scroll on the left side on the screen i feel it...
So I guess the majority of Nexus 4 devices have that, but bany users can just not be aware of this issue.
That kinda sucks, but for this price... it's totally acceptable for me
Just like to say that I also have them, they are more visible at higher brightness.

Who has screen bleed?

Who has screen bleed issues? Please put what kind of model. Thanks.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
I had a minuscule amount on the original Nexus 7 but none from this new one (LTE model). I've only seen a few issues about screen bleed with the new Nexus
Minor towards the top that's not visible under normal use. Non-issue.
I have, at least imo, bad screen on the top right of the screen. Also have it on bottom left. Really visible against black even at lower brightness. Seriously considering to send this for warranty repair if it covers it. I have 32gb flo.
Btw, there are plenty of threads already about this, even in this section...

IMO, I may bring it to ASUS service center again near the end of the warranty. I also have the same thought with you, I can live with screen burn-in but not the light bleed.

Yeah, I can live with this too, but if possible, I could do without it I'll send it in the beginning of 2014 as I won't be able to use it for a while anyway.
I'll attach bunch of pics in various lighting. Most are in dark room (natural light) or completely dark. There's a few in well lit room too. Most are on 100% brightness, some in 50% as well. Unlike you, my screen seems to be fine on blue.
Oh and the quality sucks as I took them with an ancient samsung pocket cam and my s2. S2 seems to have better quality imo
Here's a dropbox link to a zip of all the pictures: LINK
I also added a few as attachments.

I download them from your dropbox and the light bleed in the top right side seems a bit serious. Most cases I googled usually are obvious in black background including yours. However, my case is obvious in any cases except in the dark black background lol
Here is another picture showing the old and new Nexus 7 in Google Now screen. You can see the left edge is brighter especially in the purple area...:crying:
This is a picture of a Nexus 7 (2013) 32GB model K008. The bleeding on the top (left side of the image attached) was visible during regular use and really bothered me, so I returned the device the same evening to the store. After some convincing they swapped it with a new one. That one also has bleeding, but very minor. Not visible during normal use. I'm glad I returned the first one!

Glad to hear you can return it. Here I am in Hong Kong and I can just bring my Nexus 7 (2013) to repair instead of replacing a new one....
Here is mine. I don't know whether my shooting settings are good or not but maybe someone can help
I have screen bleed on top screen Maybe the problem is that the screw? How to.
Has anyone tried to unscrew the screw?
Hmm I don't think it is related to the screw problem, as the LCD panel and backIit should be assembled as a whole already.
It s a glue problem...
On my previous nexus, after running a few games, screen became yellow.
Bleeding =bad glue job or bad quality.
