Repairing an Original SGH-T959! - Vibrant General

I received a dysfunctional Vibrant last week. It was literally being tossed. I knowing that most phones I've had the pleasure of working with/on are very durable and extremely difficult to destroy minus dropping it off an highrise building and subsequently being ran over by an 18-Wheeler! And then some sometimes.
So I took this beautifully constructed beginning of an dynasty smartphone under my noob wing. I wrestled with what may be the main issues. I began by reading up on known issues, reading, then rereading how to disassemble the unit, and then getting my hands dirty.
Turns our that there were a mix of issues. Beginning with somebody taking the phone for a swim and ending with somebody else somehow starting the phone and bricking by haphazardly erasing info from the phone.
First things first: getting power to the phone. I took a page out of repairing a couple of laptops and smartphones with previous water damage. That is by disassembling the phone carefully, checking for the extent of the water damage, and carefully cleaning with a soft toothbrush, deionized water, lint free cloth and plenty of patience.
It took me a couple of attempts, but I finally got her up and running. Now I'm finishing the job by installing a stable & reliable ROM. Just wanted to share that somebody elses trash is another mans tool to learning and gaining more knowledge.
It may be two years old, but she still runs great. And it is an excellent introduction to Android for my mother.

Very nice!

Great job man! Welcome to the Vibe community! Let us know if you need anything.:good:

You picked a good phone to save from death. I have had it since day one and she is still going strong. This is a great forum too, tons of people willing to help. I would recommend any froyo roms for stability, especially if your giving it to your mother.

This is not another farewell thread

I was out on a bike ride and was just riding along and wham I got rear ended by a pickup truck going 30-40 mph. I never saw it coming. I had my Hero in my left rear pocket which should have been the initial impact point of the vehicle.
I lay on the road trying to breathe without pain and the first person on the scene was an off-duty fire battalion chief and he took care of me and called 911.
I was taken to the local trauma hospital where eventually my Hero was returned to me totally unscathed with MyTracks still running.
Inches from where the Hero was in my pocket I have a large hematoma and a fractured vertebrae (T10) and a ton of gross bruising. Everything else in my pockets was gone, every piece of clothing I had on was either ruined in the crash or cut off but my old old Hero lives on.
I'm proud of the thing, but I've sure been wanting a new phone and it seems I can't get rid of this thing even thorough extreme methods.
I've got 2 fractured vertebrae and a bunch of road rash, but no spinal nerve damage or anything else permanent (that we've discovered yet). I consider myself very lucky to be able to walk away from it.
Id say your Blessed. Glad your ok man.

CM7 nightly and I didn't get to flash a nightly for over a week.
MyTracks was running for 3:34:15 and split the track into 9 segments due to poor coverage in areas. I have it set to never split or never resume so it didn't reboot.
Damn glad you're alive!!!

To whom it may concern....

As some of you may have noticed, I have been very inactive in the Android world over the past month or so. I wanted to take the opportunity to let everyone know what is going on.
My wife is 8 months pregnant, and starting about a month ago she has been having some issues. Nothing too serious, but it means we have to go to the doctor several times a week to make sure she and the baby are not getting worse. She is also not supposed to leave the house if possible. As much as I enjoy the playing around I do with Blackhole, my family has to come first.
The Baby could be born any time now, and I simply don't have the time to devote to Android like I used to. I will admit that what little free time I have left now goes to extra sleep (cause I know I won't be getting any for a while after the baby is born). Lets face it, I'm no Adrynalyn or Jcase. For me Android has always been a hobby, and I do what I do mostly for myself, but just decided to share it.
I do plan on getting back into things once my life has settled down a bit, and if something major happens (Official GB upgrade anyone?) I'll try to make the time to release an update, but don't expect anything from me for a while.
I want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me with kind words, donations, suggestions, testing, bug reports, etc. over the past 9 months or so since I started developing on the Fascinate, and I want you all to know how much I appreciate you.

I hope all goes well with you and your family. And yes, Family always comes first.
Thanks for all you do for the community, you will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Congrats. And do take care.

We, in turn, appreciate all you've done for the Fascinate community, and eagerly look forward to a successful birth for the baby! If you wish to share pics of the little tendertot, I'm sure we'd all be excited to see them! If you do not wish to share them due to privacy concerns, we'll understand that, too. Have you decided on a name, and did you find out in advance if the baby will be a boy or girl? Again, if you wish to keep these details private, we'll respect that

Thanks so much again for all the kind words guys, I'll be glad to post up some pictures when we get them. Her name is Lilly, and we're so excited =) I'm going to be wrapped around her little finger if you believe my wife, which I do.
Just glad to hear all is well as of now. Pregnancy can be daunting by itself, throw in complications just makes it that much more stressful for you and your wife. Congratulations on the addition though and great name choice, my niece is named Lilly.

As nothing stood still your work has fallen down the list but then again so has super clean. Should you ever find the time again in 18 to 20 years your return will be must welcomed.
Thank you for your works, I and many others enjoyed them greatly in their day. All the best with the coming parenting. Be sure to pass your skills on to your little ones so as to increase your efficiency in making a timely comeback

Not sure if this is your first (I have two), but I am always amazed at how durable children are. They have an amazing ability to bounce back from just about anything! Best of luck, and enjoy your new family member.
Best of luck with the expanding family, and I will add my prayers to the rest.
This is my first kid, but I had 2 little brothers and 2 little sisters, so I'm well aware that kids are a hardy breed (much more than I am these days). Lillian is her full name, and it was my wife's Grandmother and Great Grandmother's name, and I just thought it was pretty (also has some tie-ins to Superman and Veronica Mars, but don't tell my wife).
Congrats! Having a kid is a life changing experience ...it changed mine and I love my kid to death ...family always first and hope all goes well

Tap-a-Talked from my Mesmerize

Omg samsung galaxy a II has self regeneration capabilities.

OK so a few months back, I got into the this blind rage (not gonna go into the details) and the only thing in my hand was my poor galaxy s2. So I threw it very very hard on the floor and the back cover, the battery, and even the sd card came off. Soon afterwards I picked it up and put everything back in place and to my reliefs, the phone worked perfectly. The battery was even,... How do I say this? Misshapen? I had to reshapen? So it could fit in its place. Anyway, everything worked perfectly except the loud speaker was broken. I could use the phone without playing music through loud speaker and never put it in loud speaker mode during conversations. After a few months of this, suddenly the speakers was understandable again. Might not be as good as when I got it brand new but it works now.
Thanks everyone for reading my stupid post up to this point. If you have, you are patient people.

Yep true story.
Ah, no biggie.
It's the nanobots. When selfdiagnostic finds any HW faults it releases these tiny nanobots that then repair broken circuits.
I can sadly confirm that these regenerational properties are null and void if your SGS2 happens to be run over by the number 19 tram in Oslo - I suspect the tram number and city are irrelevant.
I'd have taken a picture, but looking at the mangled mess exacerbated my toothache, so I binned it.
Glad I've got an extra. I shall test this one under the #11 tram.
Samsung will be in contact with you shortly to recover their lost super-secret prototype Galaxy S2000 (aka enslave-humans-phone)...

Phone Fails!

I thought it would be fun to share some stories about phone fails! whether that be development that went wrong or accidents or embarrassing stories involving your phone. I'll start...
I used to be in the Army and one day while on exercise in Scotland, I was running and tripped. I slid for about 10 metres on my front with everyone laughing at me. I didnt realise until i got back to my room that my phone had been in my chest pocket and was now smashed to smithereens .. That weekend i went to buy a new phone, i needed one because i was going on exercise again for 3 days. I decided on the old Sony with the sliding shutter on the back (i forget the model number). it was a great little phone. I spent the whole night in my trench watching videos on my new phone, so happy. The next day we were going back to camp so we packed our stuff, filled in our trenches again and headed off. It was only when I was unpacking my kit back at camp that I realised my phone had fallen out of my pocket in my trench, I had buried it under six feet of dirt and the next day i was shopping for a phone (for the second time in a week!) epic fail
i think it would be great if others could share their experiences here! i'd love to know im not the only idiot in the G3 forum!
Oh no.
I remember the times when I was extremelly adicted to xda (not that i am not). I used to download each and every rom and would flash it just too see something new.
I remember the time when i flashed some stock rom. I left the computer while the odin fladh thing was completeing. When i came back, i saw my little brother had disconnected the usb eventhough the flash process wasnt complete.
I was SO scared cause it had a bootloader and if you interrupt the flash you brick your phone. It hadn't been a month since i had the phone and i imagined what would be my father's reaction
Moreover it would be hard to explain him what had really happened as he doesnt know anything of this.
I secretly went to samsung centre and those idiots said my mother board had a problem. I hardly beileved this so i came back to xda.
Finally i found an unbricking program which worked flawlessly.
But yeah, lesson learnt. Now i always stay near the phone until i see the "pass"screen.

Had the trustworthy Nokia 6233 before this awesome G3!
Anyways once had gone for a picnic to a nearby beach. We hadn't planned on getting into the water; just have a good lunch, play a little and head back home. But well the obvious happened and we did get into the water. I handed my 6233 to a friend of mine who was just sitting on a rock nearby (not in the water though) Had a lot of fun, with absolutely no concern for the world! That's when my sister pointed out that the friend who I'd given my mobile to, was also in the water!!
Oh, shattered, completely. Took the phone, opened it up, removed the battery and kept it for drying for 2 days. Alas it didn't boot ever again
But as they say everything happens for a reason. Went out and got G3 and like they say the rest is history

I know how to take care of a phone, so do most. Accidents happen. I, as well as many others I'm sure, have placed a phone in what we thought was a safe spot, and still had it fall, or someone else accidentally knocks it down. I have a 3 year old. I'd love to see you hand a phone to a small child and have them not drop it. Or have it slide out of a pocket. Thanks for playing.

People aren't nit picking, some people have legitimate claims. It's a phone and believe it or not, accidents do happen.
This is where we've reached, fan boys actually blaming the consumer now for accidentally dropping their phone's, instead of blaming the real culprit.

Who's the genius that would hand a 700$ phone to a 3 year old in the first place?
That would be no accident, it would mean the parent is missing more than a couple of braincells.

our little girl plays learning games on both mine and the lady's phone, along with grandma's tablet. All three of the devices have more than stood up to the task. She's only dropped the tablet once, neither phone yet. Also, not everything is out of reach to the little one. Sometimes I'll set it on the wide arm of the couch to charge while I sit there. If I get up, I'm not going to Unplug it just to get a drink in the next room. At $300+ and listed as a " solid, sturdy, durable etc" product, you expect it to withstand a drop or two. My Droid X has been knocked off counters and such by friends( where it SHOULD be safe), dropped by myself, I've gotten hung up in the charger cord once despite my best effort to keep it out of the way, pulling my phone with it. Hit bumps in a vehicle dumping it from the car holder, as it clicked into place, but didn't actually secure. I've had coolant and other automotive fluids spilled on me, or splash onto my phone etc. I was using the LED light to find small puddles in the basement once, dropped it into the water after tripping over something I didn't see, its worked its way out of my deep side pocket while I ran once, fell onto my foot and got kicked across the ground. I don't keep it there anymore but the pocket was 3" deeper than the phone, should have been secure. Point is, you can't predict everything around you, or control it. Accidents happen regardless unless you move like a turtle, even then it may still happen. So can we lose the stupid and stay on topic please?

Still, it is a 3 year old. Why don't you just get her a cheap tablet of her own to remove your expensive phones out of the equation?
Also, even though the rest was painfully hard to read, (wall of text) I still did and I agree that devices should be build more sturdily when they cost 300+$.
Accidents happen in life, but we can do things to avoid them and minimize the damage.

Who are you helping?? How can you possibly help/teach anyone not to drop their phone?? The price of insurance to the price of a screwed up phone is pittance!

I was compiling part numbers/ links and popular insurance company coverages, policy's etc to update my first thread with, however the off topic trolling doesn't stop, so **** it.
