No Simultaneous Voice and Data on AT&T - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus 4 on AT&T doesn't seem to be allowing simultaneous voice and data. Not sure if it's a network issue or a problem with the phone which I am only now putting through its paces.
I came from a Galaxy Nexus which worked perfect. My account provisioning has not changed and the APN is the same as with the GN. I'm getting roughly the same HSPA+ speeds as before.
Anyone else seeing problems with simultaneous voice and data?

I just tried it and it's working for me just fine. I called myself on my work phone then browsed with Chrome to three sites, two of which I had not been to before.
EDIT: Here's my APN in case it helps:
Name: HSPA
APN: phone
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: default,supl,agps,fota,dun,mms

When you say "fine" what exactly do you mean? Have you done a speed test during a call? Could give you interesting results.
I was getting the same thing on my Galaxy Nexus and now get it on my Nexus 4.
Still doesn't work on AT&T right (it's intentional) and on T-Mobile it works fine.
HOWEVER, data does not come back until a call is completed. Don't know if that's an Android bug or network limitation.
See:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1757096

check build.prop settings. can't remember which rom it was (not nexus 4), but there was a release where it was set to disable simultaneous voice and data in gsm mode. not really ever an issue since I was on wcdma, and generally don't use data while on the phone anyway..

I guess I spoke a little too soon. It was initially working and I just noticed on my last phone call I lost data again.
Immediately after rebooting the phone I was showing an active data connection (signal meter was blue) and I was able to open web pages on Google Chrome while on a phone call.
I just initiated a call during which I went to access some information and noticed that my data connection was lost (the signal meter was grey) and could not access any webpages on Chrome. After hanging up the phone (without rebooting) I made several more test calls and the simultaneous voice and data appears to be working again.
When the data was working on the call, I ran a speed test and Download was only 1.58 Mbps with Upload of only 0.09 Mbps. Off the phone, in the same location, the data speeds are 5.10 Mbps Download and 1.15 Mbps Upload.
Not sure why it appears some calls are dropping data and others are not.

Next time you're in a call and don't have data, check if you are on gsm or wcdma.

It happened again. It's odd because I never noticed the problem on the Galaxy Nexus, in fact I would praise the phone's ability to be on a phone call, look up an address in Chrome and navigate with Maps all at the same time (as recent as a couple of weeks ago).
I checked the phone status during the call with lost data and its Mobile Network Type was reporting GPRS:1.
I had data when the call first started and was only on the line for about 5 minutes when I checked and data was disconnected again.

It sounds like there's a build.prop setting that's disallowing simultaneous voice and data over GSM. When you have data, you're connected via umts/hspa, but when it falls back to gsm during the call, data goes away.
look for ro.ril.enable.dtm in build.prop
don't know if there's a rcdata for these devices
If you have generatlly good hspa coverage, try setting the phone to wcdma only for testing purposes. See if it still loses data during a call

This is exactly the behavior I see. Sometimes it doesn't drop data. Other times it drops data soon after a call. But even when it doesn't drop data it's excruciatingly slow. I remember being able to take a photo and upload it in a reasonable amount of time. Now it takes like 30 minutes - if you're lucky enough for data not to drop.
I'm playing around with a T-Mobile SIM and when I'm in a good T-Mobile area it kills AT&T. Unfortunately coverage isn't that great.
Again, regardless of carrier, it doesn't ever regain a data connection on a call. It's a one way street to disconnectedness.

I checked the build.prop file and did not find ro.ril.enable.dtm. If there was a build.prop setting disallowing simultaneous voice and data wouldn't it always prevent simultaneous voice and data?
The issue I'm seeing is sporadic. In fact, I have a 3G Microcell at home and seem to maintain data connection throughout calls.

This is pretty frustrating. I've tried a different APN and it's still dropping data during a call. It seems to be happening on every call.
EDIT: So I've forced WCDMA Only and it seems to be working (data is available while on a call). I'll continue to monitor.

I haven't been able to get voice + data at all... not on the HSPA+ apn, nor the pta apn... It's quite frustrating. (seems like it worked on my GNex just fine).

Running on WCDMA only does allow for simultaneous voice and data to work, unfortunately it also leads to constant dropped calls. It's as if the pipe just isn't big enough and won't allow a call and data if it's more than EDGE. I'm suspecting this has something to do with how LG is managing the network connection since my Galaxy Nexus didn't experience this at all, same SIM card, same APN, same location.

I'm having the exact same issue. I've tried WAP.cingular and phone APN's and had a screaming match with AT&T about this.
Still no resolution.
When I start a call, I have a data connection for about 1-2 minutes before it eventually drops.

Does your WDCMA only stick through a reboot?

Yup, this is precisely what I experience on AT&T. Same location. I've been trying to find someone with an iPhone on AT&T but can't. I'd love to see how their firmware handles this. That would at least give me an idea of whether Google (+Samsung+LG) can fix this or whether we have no hope because AT&T's network is boned. Intentionally or not.
Since AT&T is throttling data during a call I imagine this is intentional on their end.

I don't believe this is an AT&T issue. My wife has my old Galaxy Nexus and her phone has no problems doing simultaneous voice and data on AT&T. This seems to be an LG issue with how they manage the radios.

Yeah just tried my GNex with everything identical. No issues stayed on a call for 10 mins and data never dropped. I know there's been a lot lately on XDA about Fast Dormancy. The Optimus G (essentially same hardware wise) had Fast Dormancy on it and someone on XDA just released a tool to disable it.
If anyone knows more about FD, please chime in if this could be the reason.

[Q] AT&T APN Help

So I called AT&T this morning to see how my data was provisioned after getting the new SIM for my Nexus 4. I was getting spotty coverage before my re-provision in Tallahassee, FL (a city that is supposed to have HSPA+) and was only seeing HSPA:10 in my phone status screen. I also downloaded the phone info app and ran a ping test...not even a single flash of HSDPA or HSPAP.
Anyway, I called and got my data re-provisioned to an iPhone 5 LTE plan since I bought an iPhone 5 with my last upgrade to unlock and sell overseas. I gave them the IMEI and they successfully moved me to an iPohne 5 LTE plan. Now I knew this wouldn't fixed my problem so I dug through the first 12 pages of this thread. Everything else was garbage anyway lol. I came across this link and added all 5 APNs to my APN list and deleted the one that was there. I did a few speed tests while on the 2nd APN (AT&T HSPA+) and got a maximum of 5.5kbps up and 1.5kbps down. I also re-ran the ping test in the phone info app and saw flashes of HSDPA and HSPAP.
Now on to my question: in my phone status screen I'm only seeing flashes of HSPA+:15 but mostly holding at HSPA:10 and although I'm seeing faster speeds, I'm sure I can see better. Is this normal? Also, I can't connect to any kind of data when I select the 3rd APN, the AT&T LTE one. Is this also normal since I'm not in an LTE market? In my phone info app I have my radio set to WCDMA preferred right now but tried changing it to LTE/CDMA/GSM to see if anything would change on APN 3 but nothing happened.
tl;dr - Are there any APNs I could try or settings I could change to cause more HSPA+:15 data access?
Thanks will be given to any and all helpful responses!

Have a look at the page before the reply you posted on the question thread. It goes through and explains the different codes stand for.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34952203&postcount=681
HSPA:15 is the fastest they have right now and it basically means HSPA+. HSPA:10 is standard HSPA and is used when there is no data being transfered to save on battery (which is why your icon switches between 3G and H).
As to why your speeds are slow, I'd be more likely to blame AT&T than the phone/software. They aren't exactly known for providing a lot of real-life bandwidth to their customers.
Thank you very much for your reply. That makes much more sense! I don't know why I didn't consider data band switching to save battery...cause it pops over to HSPA+ whenever I do the ping test (under load).
As long as I know that I've done everything in my power to get the fastest available speeds, I'm happy. Thanks again!!

No Mobile Data on AT&T

I've had this problem for a while now but it's starting to get extremely annoying. If I'm not connected to WiFi I will have no mobile data at all. I can still send texts or make a phone call but I can't go on the internet or receive MMS. I've tried at least 5 different APN settings and I've made sure that "Data Enabled" is checked but nothing works. When I contacted AT&T they said there is nothing they can do because it is not an AT&T device.

Maybe you should try again, but this time tell them you'll drop them like a hot potato if they don't give you the correct APN settings. They're doing false advertising by telling you just because it's not their device that they cannot help you. Oh really jerks? I'd ask them why the f you pay full price like everyone else then. Try playing rough, maybe you'll get a response. I'd answer you but I don't know AT&T's settings. I use T-Mobile.
After some research, it may be a problem on their end. They may have you set up for a non-smartphone data plan or HSPA or LTE, not HSPA+ data. Look at your statement and see what plan you're on. You can always call them and make sure you're set up with HSPA+. Tell them to die in a ditch if they refuse to service a paying customer. I'm having a similar issue that seems to have started around 4-5 days ago. I'm in the Twin Cities area, btw, if that matters.
Prior to that, I was only the victim of the occasional data drop or ARP offload delayed-notification issue.
The problem usually, but not aways, occurs when I leave a WIFI area and get handed off to the cell towers. I get no data, but calls/SMS works fine. Anywhere from 5-15 minutes later, I will get mobile data again, but only briefly before it goes away again.
The issue can also occur when seemingly changing towers, or going from HSPA > HSPA+.
On occasion, when the problem is occuring, my cell bars will still show blue as google services don't know they've been disconnected, but when I attempt to access, for instance, gmail or GNow, I will get no connection. Finally the bars will turn grey as the phone attempts to (apparently) cycle the radio.
Oddly, I stopped into a retail store here locally and the gal said they were having data issues so I figured it'd be fixed. That was 5 days ago. 3 days ago I called customer care and logged a case. They've found no issues with their towers or my provisioning thus far.
I also switched out my SIM card. No change.
At this point I think I'm going to walk over to T-Mobile and try a prepaid SIM to see if it's the phone or really and truly something with AT&T's network.
I'll post a logcat here if anyone is interested but I couldn't find too much interesting within it.

[Q] Tri-Band Galaxy S4 and CDMA

I have a Sprint Tri-Band Galaxy S4. For the past two weeks, I have had no signal in my house.
I talked Sprint into sending me a Airave 2.5+ at no cost. After I set it up, still no bars.
I tried my wife's flip phone and it got 5 bars.
When troubleshooting my Galaxy S4, I first checked "Network Mode" in Settings, it was on "Automatic".
I switched to "CMDA" and got 5 bars, but no LTE Data, only 3G.
When I tried "LTE/CMDA" I got LTE back (Not from the Airave), but no voice.
Which brings us to my question -- Why no CMDA voice in "Automatic" ??
Then just to test, I turned the Airave off, I now had 3 bars in my house from the Sprint tower.
Switching to "Automatic" left me with 0 bars again.
I would think with no signal in "Automatic" mode, it would then seek other bands and find the signal.
I can only guess that "Automatic" seeks the 1900 Mhz band, and Airave is on 800 Mhz.
I can't be absolutely sure because Sprint won't tell me.
If I'm right, why won't my Tri-Band Galaxy S4 find the signal on 800 Mhz??
Just to answer your question about your gs4 and airave it took my gs4 about 3 weeks to be fully functional with it to where it would show the correct signal and be able to send texts.

Daniel,
My S4 locked on to the Airave as soon as I put it in "CDMA" mode.
My question is: Why won't my GS4 see a CMDA signal when in "Automatic" mode?

I don't have it on automatic, I have it on CDMA in order to connect with my Airave.
My house doesn't get a strong enough voice signal, so I got the Airave.
But now I only can receive EVDO/3G data. No LTE.
I have different options than you: (I have no CMDA+LTE+EVDO mode)
LTE/CDMA receives LTE, but for some reason won't connect with the Airave.
AUTOMATIC also gets LTE, but won't connect with the Airave.
CDMA connects with the Airave. It receives EVDO from the Airave, or 3G when connecting to a Sprint tower.
AUTOMATIC should connect with the Airave with EVDO data inside my house, or a Sprint tower with LTE when near enough.
I had same thing happen while on a galaxy S 4. I decided to use my insurance and exchange the gs4 for a new one. I thought maybe mine was broken. Asurion sent me a triband Sprint Spark Galaxy S4. I was so excited to see the new speeds. Unfortunately, I still have no network connection while in Automatic mode. CDMA is the only network mode that has worked going on three weeks now. I will update when I can connect to the network on anything besides CDMA.

It was time to take the dog for a walk, so I did an experiment.
1. Before leaving the house: CDMA mode has EVDO data and 5 voice bars from the Airave.
2. Switched to AUTOMATIC and rebooted. Had LTE data with no voice bars.
3. One block from house got 3 voice bars to go with the LTE, increased to 5 bars as I went.
4. On return, lost all voice bars near my house, still had LTE.
5. Inside I switched back to CDMA, again got 5 voice bars and EVDO data.
I made 10 trips to the Sprint Store and emailed Customer Care 5 times. If they had told me I could get a signal in CDMA, I wouldn't have the Airave now. All their "Help" info said they broadcast voice on 1900 MHz CMDA and very little else.
What I now suspect is the Airave broadcasts CMDA/EVDO on 1900 MHz, Sprint also broadcasts it from their towers. Sprint is having LTE growing pains, and the signal is too weak at my house.
Unfortunately, the Spark GS4 does not seem switch from LTE to CDMA automatically, so it must be manually put in CMDA mode.
I have two towers near my home, each is about 1 mile away. I worked with microwave and radar transmitters until I retired. LTE at1900 MHz should be able to reach much more than a mile and penetrate a normal house -- unless the transmitted power is VERY low. AM radio, at 530 - 1700 MHz does it over far greated distances.
It also makes sense that my SG4 should be able to switch from LTE to CDMA while seeking, but it obviously can't.

Sorry meant LTE+CDMA, when I'm that my phone connects to airave and I can send messages and have 3g connection. But while connected to airave you cannot connect to LTE. I have LTE outside of my house, but once I connect to the airave by walking in I lose LTE and connect to 3G. So if you want LTE in your home you would have to shut off airave which means not having the stomg signal indoors. Its a tradeoff.

Jnichols2:
Let me help out on this one...
Bottom line, set it to automatic network selection, disable wi-fi "smart mode" and update your PRL (in the sydtem updates screen). Do this with the airave plugged in and connected, then do it again with the airave unplugged or away from the house. Once I did that, mine has never had an issue.
I got an airave about a year ago and took a peek "under the hood" with a spectrum analyzer. I have only ever seen the airave use the 1900 MHz PCS band, never the 800 MHz. And, yes, that means no LTE radio through the airave, only 3G.
My guess is that your device "thinks" it has a tri-band LTE signal, but the nearest tower is missing the 2.5 GHz band...
In that case, PRL update should grab the correct info.
If you are in a triband (Spark) area, then you can't do voice and data at the same time, but data is supposed to be pre-empted, not voice. One ithing to try- connect to a wifi network while on LTE and see if you can make a call.
Daniel,
I can't connect to the Airave in LTE/CDMA mode.
It may be that I have a strong LTE signal in my house. The voice signal is 1 bar or less.
Or, it may be that I have a tri-band device.
Bolo,
I tried what you wote, but it will only connect to the Airave in CDMA mode.
Both,
I guess I can live with the situation.
I have a very fast Wi-Fi signal, and I use very little data when out of the house.
I basically just check email and the weather outside.
If I want to watch a movie, I can switch back to automatic mode.
I have googled a lot on the issue, and kind of understand it's an issue with the TriBand S4 and Sprint towers.
It will lock on any LTE signal, no matter how weak.
It will only switch to CMDA if there is no signal at all, that happens in the CMDA only mode.
Sprint is promising to correct it.

To answer some of your questions:
The tri-band Galaxy S4 is tri band because it operates on three different kinds of signals: CDMA, LTE, and GSM. The latter is only used if it is unlocked for a GSM carrier (T-Mobile, AT&T, etc) or if it is being used internationally in a GSM tower. CDMA is what the voice and 3G/2G(1XRTT) operates off of, LTE is your 4G data services. Those are the two primary antennas used. If you have it set to CDMA only, it will only use voice and 3G services. If you have it set for CDMA/LTE it will use voice, 3G, and 4G (if available), but will not look for GSM towers. Automatic will look to connect to any of those, but will not connect to GSM unless unlocked to do so.
Now, as far as why it isn't working on your airave, if could be a couple things. The most likely is that it isn't compatible with your airave. It has nothing to do with the frequency the airave is using. There are several new phones that the airaves aren't yet compatible with. Assuming that's not the case, you could have a defective phone.
Another fun thing in the mix is the fact that the tri-band S4 is Sprint Spark capable, and for some reason Spark has been causing a ton of issues on phones (i.e. not calling, not texting, no data, freezing the phone up, etc), even in areas that don't have Spark up and running yet. So it's also very possible that these issues lie in the fact that the phone is Spark capable, which may persist even if you get the phone replaced.
There is a good possibility that you may be having Spark issues because right now the work around for phones experiencing issues with Spark phones is to put the network on CDMA only, which you said has given you some relief from your problems. The downside of that is that your 4G won't work with it on CDMA only.
Of course this isn't very good news, but hopefully that sheds some light on your situation.

Wiz,
I've already googled enough to figure most of this out. It seems the S4 Spark has problems switching from LTE to CDMA.
It's not a huge problem leaving it in CDMA. The Airave 3G is pretty slow, but I have a fast Wi-Fi at home. On my walk this morning, I was able to get 950 KBs on the Sprint 3G. If I need more, I can just switch to LTE.
I understand the S5 and Spark EVO are having the same issue. No doubt, Sprint and Samsung will work out a patch.

Hopefully so! Right now network speeds are HORRIBLE where I'm at (Elizabethtown, KY), 3g is about 100kbps on a good day and 4g is anywhere from 200kbps to 1.5 mbps
i had this same problem
i did ##72786# after talking to customer care.... and it worked.. i'm not sure if they changed something or refreshed something on my account to reset it..

Can you elaborate a little? What does ##72786# do?
Right now, I just leave the mode in CMDA instead of Automatic.

Reactivates your phone. It will reboot twice. No harm is done with this. (Unless you're using the phone overseas)

put your phone in normal mode..
settings > connections > more networks > mobile networks > network mode > cdma/lte/evdo AND:
settings > connections > more networks > mobile networks > roaming > roaming network > automatic
then, restart, then
settings> more> system update> update profile.... then restart then
go to the dailer and dial ##72786# .. this should activate the hands free activation...
then call customer care from another phone and get someone smart to do trouble shooting with you if your lte is still not working...
You will be UNABLE TO CONNECT TO THE AIRAVE unless your are in "CDMA ONLY".
Go to
settings/network connections/more networks/mobile networks
and change to CDMA .
( Do NOT select CDMA/LTE until you LEAVE the Airave vicinity)
If you are indeed connected to the Airave, you will hear a recording telling you that you are if you call *99.
You will have to re-enable the CDMA/LTE everytime you leave the vicinity of the Airave to get LTE service.
Sprint Tier II Tech informed be of the above, and I have verified it all by personally testing the above.
Now, here is the real question:
What are the EXACT DIFFERENCES between using the "Wi-Fi Calling Feature" with NO Airave - AND- using the Airave WITHOUT using W-Fi Calling.????

Do both WiFI calling and Airave deliver texts to the phone in the identical way?
On WiFi Calling, I was missing MANY texts at home. Then, when I would leave the house, all those missed texts come through to my phone, all at the same time.
Will the new Airave 2.5+ I just received from Sprint solve this problem, or is it going to be IDENTICAL to WiFi calling?
Thanks.

Verizon dropping to 1x and !

Have not seen any mention of anyone really having data issues. However this was my experience once I was rooted. Of course all the proper settings in networks tab. Thought maybe a bad sim as I had it for awhile and cut it for the MXP. Verizon swap no problem. Leave the store and ten minutes later it happened again. While rooted I only had gravitybox and viper installed along with kernel auditor. Uninstalled them no change. So here I am now after a factory restore and no signal drops whatsoever. About to reroot and go step by step to try and trigger again. Besides returning phone for what I think is software related is there anything else I am missing to setup after rooted that is tainting my setup. Maybe a rom would help. But not too many days left for Amazon 14 day return on cellphones. This is last resort as I love the phone. Thanks for any assistance.
Sounds like you're in LTE mode only (even though you may have it set properly in settings) so any time you lose 4G it can't drop to 3G. You need to access Phone Info and change it to LTE/CDMA auto (PRL).

It's a hidden menu that can be accessed several ways. I have a direct link to that I created in Nova launcher (widgets > activities) that I restore to any rom/phone I use. It can also be accessed from the dialer (sorry but I don't know the code to enter) or with an app (Google HTC Thunderbolt LTE On/Off app - it may no longer be in the Play store). If I'm not mistaken there's an Xposed Module that'll add it to your power menu.

Anyone know dialer code?

I will look into it. But right now I don't have any signal issues. I have installed everything but xposed and gravitybox. No issues yet.
Dialer Code:
*#*#4636#*#*
I am also having issues getting the 4g to kick over to 3g. I haven't had a chance to try this setting out yet because I have no cell service at my house.

Thanks. Will try once I notice the issue again. Now Pandora doesn't want to work but it worked before FAC restore.
Edit: works fine to get to menu. Noticed the default was something like lte, gsm, CDMA auto(prl).
Changed to setting in second post.
We shall see.

Assuming OP has the same issue I am having then it isn't in LTE only mode. The issue I'm having seems to be APN related. I went camping this passed weekend and the data connection wasn't available which shows a ! in the signal icon. If I went to the APN settings and tried a different APN then it would connect and show LTE. This is a bug similar to what I've seen on some other phones using AOSP systems like CM, etc.

I'm not sure that actually changing the APN is the issue. I think it has more to do with it resetting the data connection state. Sort of seems like a race condition because changing the APN didn't always fix it for me the first time.
I've also never seen a data issue in my hometown. It was only when I was out in the middle of nowhere.
My wife's Nexus 6 never had the issue while we were camping.

LTE/GSM/CDMA is fine. This corresponds to "Global" in the main cellular settings. It simply means it will use either GSM or CDMA depending on the sim card installed. With a Verizon SIM card it is the same as having LTE/CDMA.

Yes but I have tried those settings as well as hidden menu settings. Only one that works is LTE only mode in hidden menu. Just don't understand why all the issues on any other setting. This is first unlocked phone for me but I've never had to change these settings while running stock roms. Is there anything else that I should of done after installing sim? Or even after to get these settings to work.

UK VoLTE and VoWiFi EE

Hello,
Got mt XL today from EE and I can happily tell you that WiFi calling and VoLTE work straight out of the box. WiFi calling needed to be enabled in the phone settings but VoLTE was on by default. Top job :good:
For those in the US I suppose this means the phone can do it, you just need your network to have it enabled.

Doesn't matter, it's enabled by default and you can't disable it.
Ignore the slider, if you make a call you'll see it sticks to 4G and doesn't drop down to 3G
Yep.... Worked straight out of the box for me too,
God this phone is slick
Happy days XD
Great to see an Android phone that is running the latest software and supports VoLTE and WiFi Calling. A true iPhone competitor.
Just need Three, Vodafone and O2 to add support now too
How are people finding the phone on EE after a few days use? Has anyone noticed if the reception is any better / worse than their previous handsets? I read somewhere the top half is glass so the signal isn't hampered by the aluminium.
Also, has anyone ran any speedtests?
I've been running a few days, in the house it defaults to wifi due to the reception being low since I live in a dip on the coast near people who moaned about having masts near them, I still get about a 30-40meg data connection it just prefers the wifi in the house, at work on the other hand I'm seeing speeds around 60meg and reception is great, far better than it was on O2 with my S6/Note 7, but the reception does seem fine and also seems to still work inside big shops more than other devices.
as for O2 getting on wifi calling, it wont happen, they want to force people to use tugo, also it's the same firm that once told me 3G was a failure and would never catch on.
Thanks for the update @Belimawr, if you have wifi calling on is there an icon for it? And does it only kick in if you have poor signal? On my S7 if i have wifi calling on, it calls / texts over that 100% of the time even if I'm in a good signal area.
@FSOP seems to depend on the wifi, it seems to prefer the wifi if the data speed is better than the 4G, if the wifi outperforms the 4G it defaults to the wifi. so my wifi in the house (80meg connection) is always better than the 4G so it will always go to that first, but the openzone we have at work online gives about 5meg so it stays on 4G for calling, so I'm guessing someway it gauges performance to decide how to connect.
as for knowing how you are calling, it seems to be the network thing that tells you who you are connected to, normally it will just show "EE" but when it goes over to wifi calling it changes over to "EE Wi-Fi Calling" it is the same in the quick access menu on the notifications draw.
