[SOLVED] Switch between CM10 and CM7 backups - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the way to switch between CM10 and CM7 nandroid backups?
I tried the usual way: factory reset > restore backup. that got me a bootloop. I used the WIPE.zip. Didn't help.
Had to start from scratch (sbf) and even there I had bootloops. Only a stock recovery factory reset helped.
thx
/edit: Solution here
Convert /data back to ext3 before restoring backup. Goto Recovery > Back > Tools > Format to ext3 > wait...
After that do NOT wipe anything! Restore Backup.

A FULL WIPE(including dalvik) and FULL restore should work. By that I mean you have to backup and restore both system and data after using the full wipe zip which will wipe data as well as system( its there in the themes and apps section). Remember to wipe first and then restore. It should work.

Hi,
sorry for bumping this thread but I tried every possible method to switch between cm7 (maniac) and cm10 (2ndboot) and nothing except flashing stock sbf works.
I tried:
factory reset in stock AND custom recovery > restore nandroid = "Can't read Cache Log..." "Can't mount /data"
factory reset in stock AND custom recovery > cm7 kernel > restore nandroid = "Can't mount /data"
factory reset in stock AND custom recovery > restore nandroid > cm7 kernel = "Can't mount /data"
custom recovery > mount /data > restore nandroid = "Can't mount /data"
custom recovery > mount /data > flash cm7.update.zip = "Can't mount /data"
and i don't know what else
only way to restore is: Wipe/factory reset in Stock Recovery > flash SBF > Root > 2ndinit > flash cm7.update.zip > restore nandroid!
I really need a way to switch between Nandroids because I have to test Apps in CM10 but daily use is CM7.
Any idea how to solve this? What is the problem here anyways?

You'll have to convert data to ext3.
Install cm10, in boot menu select tools then filesystem tools then convert to ext3 everytime you want to switch to cm7

It was not a problem till first ext4 builds came up
So sometimes it helps when you format data and cache to ext3 from bootmenu tools before you switch to CM7, but I had two cases when finished with corrupted CWM and had to start with sbf
You can also try, after formatting, flash CM7 and then restore nandroid backup of data only

will try that soon.

Only reformatting to ext3 is not enought!
I reformatted ext3 and restored a Nandroid directly on top and that FAILED.
Code:
Error mounting /sdcard/.android_secure
After a reboot and another Nandroid restore it worked.
Does that mean you have to reformat data to ext3 via bootmenu, than reboot into recovery and restore nandroid? Or would that make the reformatting obsolete?

Ok I have to ask again here because it puzzles me:
When I revert back from CM10 to CM7 I
reformat /data to ext3 which works ok and than
restore my backup. But
sometimes I have to restore twice and
I ALWAYS get a .android_secure error.
When I change from CM7 to CM10 I
do a factory reset and that used to do that without problems but
now I have to restore twice to get it working!
That costs a lot of time.
Question:
Is there a secure and working way of switching between systems?

Re: [Q] Switch between CM10 and CM7 backups
Suppose you're on cm10 and wish to downgrade. I've assumed all backups have been taken before. Convert to ext3, flash wiper script (ext3), restore system, reboot, wipe data+cache and then restore. Try this and see if there's any change. Procedure for cm10 will be flash wiper script (ext3), wipe cache, restore system, reboot, convert to ext4, wipe data, restore data and reboot. Give it a try

will try. I hoped for a simple and quick one click solution because I have to switch quite often and would like to leave my phone unattended while switching.

I think this is a common bug, that SD card is not mounted automatically. Try these steps:
Mount and storage, mount sd card.
Then: format to ext3.
Then restore your nandroid backup.
(so far do not wipe anything)
Restart, boot into rom.
Restart, go to recovery, wipe cache, dalvik, and maybe battery stats too.
I think this way you can change from CM10 to CM7 easily.

Going back from CM9 to Stock Froyo?

Hello, I have a full backup created with ClockWork Mod Recovery, I want to go back to Stock Froyo, would be a problem just to flash the backup again? thanks!
No problem, just do wipe data/cache and wipe dalvik before restoring backup.
Sent from my MB525 using xda app-developers app
make sure you have froyo kernel restored before flashing back to froyo, in case you got defy+ cm9 build on red lens
Actually I created the backup with System Recovery when I was on Froyo, now that I want to go back to it from CM9, I turn off the phone, press volume down + power and it shows me "android system recovery" but I don't see wipe dalvik, just wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition and there is no advanced option to look for dalvik, is this original recovery or clockwork? thanks!
Thats the Motorola Recovery
You need to power up your phone and once you see the blue led blinking press the vol down button
Then go to recovery advanced, there you can also make a nandroid backup
Thanks! Didn't know about that one, however, I can't find any option where to load my nandroid backup, I have my backup on the sdcard root, and the folder structure of the backup is:
goapkrev -> backup -> 'backup date' -> the img files and such
If I go to Custom recovery -> Restore(System and data) or Custom Recovery -> Advanced Restore it says that it does not find any files, but the backup is there, should I change the folder name to another or taking the files out of some of the folders? thanks in advanced!!
EDIT: Got it! I just had to change the folder name from goapkrev to clockworkmod, thanks!

Ext4 on the Defy - breaks compatibilty with CWM/BM?

Hi,
I'm running Quarx2k's nightly (JB 4.1.2) and I'd like to try Ext4 on my Defy for various reasons, and I found followed a guide how to do it, it was basically something like this:
make backup
Boot into Boot Menu
Filesystem tools
Format with ext4
restore backup
This works fine. The phone boots and all - the problem is that I can no longer get into CWM or Boot Menu. So has anyone else tried ext4 on their Defy? Is it even possible?
Unfortunately I do not know any good workaround for the problem but it exists for some (not all) CM10 users.
It looks like some file system corruption. If you can use a terminal you can try to format data and cache to ext3 and restore nandroid backup of data. If not flashing of full sbf can repair it.
But can you get to bootmenu with pressing volume down while blue LED is on?

No, I can't get to neither bootmenu or CWM. However, it can be fixed by flashing sbf and starting from scratch. I have a few ideas which I will try in the next days, I'll post if I get it working.
I Tried the same procedure:
-Backup /system - /data
-Format Ext4
-Recover /system n' /data
If select reboot to recovery o bootmenu don't work ... but if i press voldown enters on Boot menu and CMW

[Q]Motorola Defy(MB525)/data and /cache partition problem (corrupted?)

I found my data and cache partition corrupted, and i dont know why.
I don't know anyway to fix it but do SBF flash (so far I am doing the THIRD SBF flash today, really frustrating)
[edit] why i think data and cache partition corrupted:
1. I couldn't mount data and cache and psd partition in recovery, but i can mount sdcard (and can't unmount system partition, is it supposed that system can't be unmounted?)
2. when i booted up the system(Kayant's AOKP), the size of internal memory is 0.0B, as shown in the settings->storage
[/edit]
Is there any to fix without doing SBF flash?
another question:
How to prevent it/any precaution so that the partition wont mess up? (I probably did some wrong thats why the partition was messed up, but I have no idea what I had done wrong)
here is what i did:
I had had this problem before so I do a SBF flash and the problem is gone.(I installed Kayant's AOKP rom -4.1jb)
Yesterday I decided to flash another rom (that was Quarx's cm10.1 rom) i did a nandroid backup first, then installed the rom and installed some apps, after that I installed Kayant's Slim rom(from the new aokp paradise), i found some bug and at last decide to return to Kayant's AOKP rom. I installed the 2nd Init boot menu(coz i did the nandroid backup with CWMrecovery, not TWRP), and problems came while restoring it. It failed to restore /data partition, I tried more times but couldn't fix this. So at last I turned to SBF flashing.
I flashed and rooted it with SuperOneClick and installed 2nd Init boot menu then install the AOKP rom(didn't restore the nandroid this time) then factory reset-ed it with stock recovery, and I found the /data and /cache partition messed up again(obviously the partition isn't messed up right after SBF flashing because i can install the 2nd Init app).
Now I am doing the third SBF flash.
You shouldn't have formatted data and cache with stock recovery. That was a mistake in your second attempt.

should I use aroma wiper and do a ext4 wipe if i am going to flash jb roms (like cm10/android 4.1 or higher), to prevent messing it up?
is it necessary to do wipe before or after install a new rom?
besides, any idea why the partition messed up/ failed to restore data when i do a nandroid restore, when i tried to restore with cwm recovery within 2nd Init boot menu installed on Kayant's Slim rom?

Yes, format to ext4 for JB ROMs. Full wipe not necessary but recommended.
Start afresh, install the ROM and restore data.
Plus, you shouldn't have installed 2ndinit again. You should have installed dual recovery and tried.
Got same problem, data and cache partition corrupted.
Fortunately I have TWRP installed so I went to File System utility and format data and cache (I choose ext3).
Then restored previous backup and everything worked like before!

[Q] [LG P700] Recovery Can't Mount /data

I've had a few problems installing ROMs recently; boot loops, errors etc. And then when I try to restore my back-up, having wiped everything - /system, /data, /cache, /(int)sd_card, it reports a failure to restore the /data. But when I restart my phone, it's still how I left it: apps, phonebook, messages are still there and still work. I can read and write to the /data partition with ES or Xplore.
It first occurred using CWM but it did the same thing with TWRP, as well. TWRP reports 'failed to mount data', CWM, in Mounts & Storage, says "unmount /data" but nothing happens when I click on it. It just flashes and stays on 'unmount' option.
Backup data from both recoveries is fine. It's the right size and if I copy it to my PC and unpack it, everything is there so recovery has no problem reading the /data partition. Just writing to it. Or formatting it.
Any clues as to what's causing this would be greatly appreciated.

Data mounting error fix

It happened with me and many people that they have no OS installed and custom recovery gives an error CANNOT MOUNT DATA
Now you can try to repair data partition using twrp or Mount data or wipe or whatever IT WILL NOT WORK
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
Flash Philz touch from here

Go to wipe --> Custom Wipe
Then first wipe data/media and then data
VOILĂ€
Your data partition is mounted now just flash whatever you want
