How to get internet on nexus 7 on the road - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have nexus 7. I want internet on it while I am away from home or on the road.
Is that possible that I can get USB (stick) 3g internet and connect it with nexus 7 through wire to use the internet?
Or
I have a basic Samsung pohne SGH-T469W; has internet data.
is that possible that I can use that phone's internet on my nexus 7?
Or
I can upgrade to some basic Android phone so that I can use its internet data in nexus 7. (But I can spend 100 - 150 dollars only on some used phone) Please advise me also some less value but good phone processing wise. I am in Canada and on wind mobile network. Only AWS phones can be used on it. Please suggest me some phone in case if that is the best solution.
Thanks in advance.

You could get a Galaxy Nexus and use the WiFi tethering. On most non-nexus phones the carriers make you pay to tether, but on a nexus it's free. The GNex is a little old, but still good, and free from Sprint right now.
Or any device could be rooted and then used to tether

This link above explains how to get a 3g dongle working on a nexus 7 .... You can also purchase a pre paid mifi hotspot for about $140 + what ever the data cost. You can also attempt to sell the n7 you own and purchase the 3g version for 299.99 which is what I did and have no regrets of doing so

I use a verizon jetpack 4g mobile hotspot when I need to connect to the internet and no other wifi is around. It uses a shared data plan with my phones.I like it because I can use it with any of my devices whenever I need to.I don't have a smart phone so the mobile hotspot was my best option.

I linked my N7 yo my galaxy nexus via Bluetooth, figured it would better on battery for the nexus vs broadcasting a signal, not sure if it is it not. Worked great to stream Netflix to the N7 for my kid in the back seat. Turn off the soft keys and she can't accidentally back out if the movie too. I'm gonna hold onto this unlimited data from Verizon for as long as I can lol

So I tend to do things a little over kill. Here is what I have:
Tmous unlimited 4G data plan for $20 on my N4.
Tmous 5G data plan for my 3G N7- $30
Verizon 5G mifi data plan - $50.
Now, I know I can tether to my N7 with my N4, but I feel like i am paying for the convenience of just having the N7 ready to go. If I run out of 4G data on my N7, then I will just tether. However, both of these plans do me no good when I am out on the road because tmo 4G coverage sucks balls once you get out of large cities. So I have the verizon hotspot, which is PERFECT because their rural coverage is second to none. So if you think you are going to be going on lots of road trips in between large cities, then you should get a verizon Mifi hotspot. AT&T also has decent coverage because I tested out one of their hotspots a while back.

I haven't done it with my N7 but I've tethered Wi-Fi devices to my Verizon Charge. A rooted phone can get by carrier charges for tethering. I've even used a USB dongle to tether my PC when my broadband was out.
But sounds like there are multiple options for the N7.

Does the AT&T 3G Nexus 7 version need a new data plan from AT&T or can it use my existing one.
Thanks

Patently false. You must have the proper data plans on your account to use tethering or you will get flagged by your carrier.

Obviously you have to have a data plan. What I meant was that you don't have to pay the extra $30/month carriers charge for the ability to tether your phone, regardless of your data plan

You seem pretty confident there will be an update. Do you have a source? And I can point to how T-Mobile restricted the video chat on 3g as an argument to how the carrier can still have some small level of influence on the os of the nexus

If im not mistaken I believe that we are running the native hotspot for google and not sprint. If it was sprint wouldn't it say sprint hotspot? Not portable WIFI hotspot.

You can see on Sprints own website that they expect you to pay for it.
"Q: How much is the Mobile Hotspot capability?
A: Mobile Hotspot capability for Nexus S 4G is a $29.99 optional add-on. It allows the customer to use Nexus S as a Mobile Hotspot device capable of sending out a Wi-Fi signal to up to six Wi-Fi capable devices. This follows the new discounting rules launching in July and is not NVP discountable (e.g. SOCs $29.99 and below are not discountable; SOCs $30 and up are discountable)."
I also work for Sprint, its in the Nexus 4G playbook that it will be free until its updated by Google. Googles own website shows hotspot feature may have extra charge by carrier.
"Portable Wi-Fi hotspot
Nexus S can function as a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to six portable devices such as laptops or tablets. Once connected, these devices will have access to the Internet.*
*Additional fees may apply based on carrier policy"

Please comment about how useful is the Nexus without 3G for you guys...

Hello guys!
I have a Galaxy Note which is big but I could use 7" to read PDF better.
Yet, I am not so sure how useful it will be for me since it does not have 3G only WIFI so I was considering going with a Galaxy 7.7 instead.
What is your experience with it?
I mean, even some games require some internet connection before launching for example.
Thanks!
With foxfi app it hasn't been an issue, not once.

It's quite useful. I'm in wifi range much of the time, and when I'm not I can tether it to my LTE phone. I still don't like tablets or phones for heavy data entry, but for just looking the N7 is great.
My next test will be putting electronic docs on it for my job. It will be interesting to see if the 7" screen is adequate for that.
My campus has wifi everywhere so no problem for me.

Yeah that is my concern, that I will end up using my Note more because I will have internet all the time...

Well that is tethering isnt it?
Last time I did that with my now dead laptop, I got a text message and email and a letter about it, that if I were to do that again they would make some changes to my account to pay for tethering.
That is my issue, I think at the end of the day being able to use my simcard in a tablet with 3G (if it really is that easy) , would be better for me but damn is nice to resist the price and power you get with the Nexus.

No way I'd go with a 3G tablet ,the extra expensive both in price of the tablet and a 3G contract for it doesn't warrant it .If I'm not on wifi I just tether to my One X

Best (cheapest) prepaid GSM plan?

Hello-
I am trying to figure out what is the cheapest GSM prepaid plan in the United States. So far, the cheapest I have found is either AT&T's $25 unlimited talk and text plus $5 for 50 MB data or T-mobile's $30 Monthly4g unimited talk text, adn 5gb data. What plan are you guys using to get the most amount of data for the least amount of money? I don't mind going with an MVNO because they have pretty good coverage in my area. (Albuquerque, NM)
Thanks,
wws12
Anyone?
Theoretically speaking, if your main concern is data then you should probably choose an unlimited data plan to get the most out of your money. (Assuming you use that much data).
I can give some good suggestions if you could tell me your average calling, texting, and data usage. Also if you must have GSM, most prepaid just happen to be CDMA *shrugs*

It doesn't have to be GSM, but in my investigations those plans were the cheapest. I mainly want to use it for VoIP with GrooveIP for calls and GVoice for texting. Thnaks for your help!
Let's see... Virgin Mobile has unlimited data and texting, 100 minutes calling for $35 a month. The T mobile plan you found is cheaper but 5GB of data. This depends on if you are going to use more than 5GB or not...

I want to use a phone such as the Motorola Defy as prepaid. I was going to get the Droid X but found that it couldn't be flashed to other carriers than Verizon.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Are you sure you want the Motorola Defy... ? Republic Wireless has the Defy XT as their only available phone, but they have a different business model.
$20 a month unlimited everything, but depends on WiFi. However nothing is stopping you from sticking to their 3G (Sprint) full time. Big problem is that they are in beta and if you sign up now it could be months until you get the phone. (I'm sure once you are up and running it rocks, but the limited phone choice and waiting time is way too long).
Do you want a rugged phone or a Motorola phone or what? Why do you choose the Defy?
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
I chose the Defy because it had a stable ICS ROM and for the fact that it was GSM which I had thought was the best deal at the time. Thanks for the information about Republic Wireless
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
So you have decided to go with Republic?
I was mainly wondering about why you wanted the Defy because it has pretty old hardware. If you still want to consider Virgin and want ICS they have the HTC EVO V, HTC One V, and soon to be released Samsung Galaxy Reverb.
(That t mobile plan you found is actually very good, 5GB is plenty of data. Virgin just has a better plan if you use more than that, which is quite rare in fact)
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
I want GSM because that will allow me to easily switch carriers at a later date if I need to. Are there any better phones than the Defy that are $150 or less on Amazon? Thanks for all your help, BTW!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
No problem glad to help
I understand that, in that case that t mobile prepaid plan definitely seems to be a good deal.
As for a phone, I don't go on Amazon since prices are usually higher, but I do know on eBay you can get a galaxy s (for 4g you need the Samsung galaxy s 4g but it has less dev support than the Samsung vibrant which only has 3g) for $150 or less. Any galaxy s variant blows the defy out of the water for sure
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
I usually don't shop eBay because of the possibility of scammers. I'll look at the galaxy s variants though. Which would you say has the best dev support? I need at least a stable ICS, if not JB. Thanks!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
All galaxy s were very popular and all have great dev support. Since you were looking at the defy I'm going to assume 4g isn't big on your requirements list and in that case the Samsung vibrant is the phone for you!
Most popular galaxy s from my general knowledge is the cappy aka Samsung Captivate. Unfortunately since it is at&t 3g it will only work on t-mobile 2g (ugh!)
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
How much is the Vibrant online?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
On amazon it appears to be $200+
On eBay they go as low as $120 and the Captivate gets even cheaper like $110.
What I like to think of eBay is the whole virus thing on Android. More scams/viruses happen on ebay/Android, but that is because there are more sellers/is more open. You just have to be smart and look at feedback/permissions. Does that seller/app have low feedback score/want to manage your sms and calls? Then don't trust him,her/it
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
OK thanks. Quick question that maybe you can answer. On at&t, their prepaid go phone plans include a 100 minute/unlimited text plan for $25/mo. For smartphones you need a data plan which they have in various denominations, but the one I'm interested in is the $5 for 50MB one. If I don't renew the $25 plan, will I lose the data also? Or will it still continue? Thanks!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
They require you to be using the $25 or $50 plan in addition to data every month.
They actually used to have a rule of having $25 in your account every 90 days with whatever data plan you feel like tacking on, but since April 2012 they require to have a monthly text / call plan.

[Q] Pre-paid data only plan, no voice

Is there a pre-paid data only plan that I would be able to use with the nexus 4? I am in the US and AT&T is the only carrier with 3G where I am. Are there actual data-only plans that use AT&T towers that I could use? If not, would there be a way that I could use a prepaid tablet data plan from AT&T? Thanks
I believe straight talk also has data only plans, but not sure if they will work on a phone. Their phone plans are way better than ATT though, and you get same ATT towers/service.

T-Mobile has a 5gb, unl Text and like 100min plan for $30. you get some mins but not alot. You also get T-Mobiles 42 Mbps HSPA+ as well.

I've been looking for better information on this but all I get is a sea of posts that aren't relevant to tmo's current plans. I paid for unlimited 4g and I used to have tethering with that but now it says I only get 500 megabytes. If someone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

Well all the new Simple Choice Plans come with 500mbs of tethering. You would need to pay extra to get additional tethering access. All that information is directly from the T-mobile site. Did you switch to the new plans or did they switch you without you knowing?
We switched it. I first had the 2 and a half gig plan and tethered all of it then I upgraded halfway through the month to unlimited and tethered a lot more. When I went back on the site there was a tethering option that wasn't there when we first upgraded to their new plans. And under the 2 and a half gig plan, all of that is tetherable, so I get less tethering with the unlimited plan. Kind of weird.

yea, its 500mb for people with unlimited high speed data plan, and unlimited tether for those with less data. but you can purchase another 4.5gb. they just dont want those people with completely unlimited high speed data to use their data for their permanent home internet.
