Hello-
I am trying to figure out what is the cheapest GSM prepaid plan in the United States. So far, the cheapest I have found is either AT&T's $25 unlimited talk and text plus $5 for 50 MB data or T-mobile's $30 Monthly4g unimited talk text, adn 5gb data. What plan are you guys using to get the most amount of data for the least amount of money? I don't mind going with an MVNO because they have pretty good coverage in my area. (Albuquerque, NM)
Thanks,
wws12
Anyone?
Theoretically speaking, if your main concern is data then you should probably choose an unlimited data plan to get the most out of your money. (Assuming you use that much data).
I can give some good suggestions if you could tell me your average calling, texting, and data usage. Also if you must have GSM, most prepaid just happen to be CDMA *shrugs*

It doesn't have to be GSM, but in my investigations those plans were the cheapest. I mainly want to use it for VoIP with GrooveIP for calls and GVoice for texting. Thnaks for your help!
Let's see... Virgin Mobile has unlimited data and texting, 100 minutes calling for $35 a month. The T mobile plan you found is cheaper but 5GB of data. This depends on if you are going to use more than 5GB or not...

I want to use a phone such as the Motorola Defy as prepaid. I was going to get the Droid X but found that it couldn't be flashed to other carriers than Verizon.

Are you sure you want the Motorola Defy... ? Republic Wireless has the Defy XT as their only available phone, but they have a different business model.
$20 a month unlimited everything, but depends on WiFi. However nothing is stopping you from sticking to their 3G (Sprint) full time. Big problem is that they are in beta and if you sign up now it could be months until you get the phone. (I'm sure once you are up and running it rocks, but the limited phone choice and waiting time is way too long).
Do you want a rugged phone or a Motorola phone or what? Why do you choose the Defy?
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
I chose the Defy because it had a stable ICS ROM and for the fact that it was GSM which I had thought was the best deal at the time. Thanks for the information about Republic Wireless
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
So you have decided to go with Republic?
I was mainly wondering about why you wanted the Defy because it has pretty old hardware. If you still want to consider Virgin and want ICS they have the HTC EVO V, HTC One V, and soon to be released Samsung Galaxy Reverb.
(That t mobile plan you found is actually very good, 5GB is plenty of data. Virgin just has a better plan if you use more than that, which is quite rare in fact)

I want GSM because that will allow me to easily switch carriers at a later date if I need to. Are there any better phones than the Defy that are $150 or less on Amazon? Thanks for all your help, BTW!

No problem glad to help
I understand that, in that case that t mobile prepaid plan definitely seems to be a good deal.
As for a phone, I don't go on Amazon since prices are usually higher, but I do know on eBay you can get a galaxy s (for 4g you need the Samsung galaxy s 4g but it has less dev support than the Samsung vibrant which only has 3g) for $150 or less. Any galaxy s variant blows the defy out of the water for sure
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
I usually don't shop eBay because of the possibility of scammers. I'll look at the galaxy s variants though. Which would you say has the best dev support? I need at least a stable ICS, if not JB. Thanks!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
All galaxy s were very popular and all have great dev support. Since you were looking at the defy I'm going to assume 4g isn't big on your requirements list and in that case the Samsung vibrant is the phone for you!
Most popular galaxy s from my general knowledge is the cappy aka Samsung Captivate. Unfortunately since it is at&t 3g it will only work on t-mobile 2g (ugh!)
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
How much is the Vibrant online?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
On amazon it appears to be $200+
On eBay they go as low as $120 and the Captivate gets even cheaper like $110.
What I like to think of eBay is the whole virus thing on Android. More scams/viruses happen on ebay/Android, but that is because there are more sellers/is more open. You just have to be smart and look at feedback/permissions. Does that seller/app have low feedback score/want to manage your sms and calls? Then don't trust him,her/it

OK thanks. Quick question that maybe you can answer. On at&t, their prepaid go phone plans include a 100 minute/unlimited text plan for $25/mo. For smartphones you need a data plan which they have in various denominations, but the one I'm interested in is the $5 for 50MB one. If I don't renew the $25 plan, will I lose the data also? Or will it still continue? Thanks!

They require you to be using the $25 or $50 plan in addition to data every month.
They actually used to have a rule of having $25 in your account every 90 days with whatever data plan you feel like tacking on, but since April 2012 they require to have a monthly text / call plan.

This guy know is selling his T-Mobile SGT for $425, it would come with a leather case and screen protectors. I checked it out and it's in very good condition (ESN is good).
I was wondering if it would be a good idea to go ahead and buy it from him or wait until April 1st to buy a brand new wifi model?
I don't plan on setting the tab up with 3G, just going to use it with wifi and phone tether.
Any advice? Thanks!
You can get it at tmobile for 249

Yeah, but you are committed to a 2-year data plan.
If you do the math, that is a lot of money for 2 years.
Went ahead and just bought it. :X
Decided I couldn't wait that long for one lol. Plus I figured that since it came with a case and screen protector, I was getting a decent deal.
Finally, I can consider myself a proud tablet owner.
Well mine is cheaper I gave up my fone and use my tab.....and transferred my data plan which is 29.99 unlimited...only thing im signed in for 2 years but my data plan is cheap....and I use the 3g service allot

If I am not mistaken, do you have AT&T tab?
Because if you have the T-mobile tab, then you can only have calling ability (like a phone) but only get 2G data instead of 3G. Am I correct?
Yeah I have tmobile ...i use sip droid and google voice combined for calls....hopefully wit the update to 2.3..we all can enjoy the enabled voip calling which will be nice

A friend of mine was looking at switching from a regular plan to a prepay plan and he was wondering if he goes and buys the cheapest phone they have can he put the SIM from that into his Vibrant and use it prepay. Also if down the road he decides to get a different phone can he take the prepay SIM and put it into the new phone without having to get a new SIM.
Yeah, a tmo prepay sim would work in a vibrant. And yes, you can put that sim in any tmo phone.

Yeah, I do the EM+ thing and I keep a couple of blackberries as backups and swap over all the time.
Of course, that's technically different from full blown prepay.

Hey does anyone do just a data plan on a vibrant/smartphone? I'm thinking about doing that, with free GV texts, and signing up for a SIP acct to get free VOIP calls... I think you can get 2 gigs of data for $30 prepaid.
Just wondering if anyone has done this or thought about it?
Here is an article at tmonews that can help you with the prepaid stuff

Thought about it heavily.

Depends on your usage of course but I bought a $100 prepaid card and just use the $1.49 data for 24 hours. It's been good enough for my uses and since I work from home just use it on weekends if need be. Maybe a weekday here and there too.
Guys, does anyone use Prepay Widget? Im planning on going on holiday and want to know if it works...

I know that a data plan is required to use a smart phone with Verizon. Can someone tell me if I can use the $10/75MB plan if I went out and bought the xperia Play? The reason being, I am only 16 and really don't need an expensive data plan. I would just turn off the mobile connect and use WiFi for my Internet needs. So is the 10$ plan an option? If not, what's the cheapest plan I can get? I am an emulator junkie and I would love to only carry one device with me. Yet I don't have a job so a $30 dollar plan is a no-no

Looks like it will be $30 for 2 GB's. At least according to Cnet. That's the minimum for smart phones.

Won't happen though there used to be a promotional data plan of 15$ for 150mb gotta find someone who could either do it or find someone on that plan and pay them to. Take it.

Great news for T-Mobile customers and people that are interested in switching to T-Mobile. Finally another US carrier other than Sprint that offers truly unlimited data. Thoughts?
Yea i think its good but if they lower the price like boost mobile it think more people would switch...

I'm wondering for those of us already on unlimited but 4G capped at 2GB, will this apply to us? :good:
I think so. It said on the up sell information that it suggests the T-Mobile employees sell it because it has way more advantages and is only ten more bucks.

I have a galaxy s2 on T-Mobile, I'm looking for a better plan, I need at least 5GB of data. Right now I have the $30 100min and 5GB data plan, I don't want to spend $70 a month for more minutes and 5GB of data, but I do need more minutes as well as the data I have. Is there a simple mobile, or family talk plan that would work fully?

I just found out that my phone is unlocked, I dialed *#simlock#and all said off. So does this open up more options for me? I'd like to keep 4g working
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Well you're on prepaid so don't worry about that message....can't charge you because you paid before....
Simplemobile apparently limits to approximately 2gb give or take a few. Their 3g plan actually gives you "4g". I don't see how they can actually adjust it to limit it to 3g speed only because 4g it's actually 3.5g..
So stick to the $40 plan.
You can also go straight talk. but i forget what the data limit is for that. Look it up.

The 40$ plan has terrible data speeds and sucks if you're using a smartphone. I would NOT recommend it.
ST throttles after (about) 2GB a month or 100MB a day. (technically the AT&T BYOD SIMs seem to be stricter about this than the T-Mobile ones)
