Launch Day Nexus 7 Defect - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've screen staining, screen lift, screen ripples on left side if pressed too hard.
Its past 15 Days, do I have to go through ASUS?
How long dies it usually take to get my nexus 7 back?
Should I return to stock locked before sending it out for warranty repair?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2

Definitely return back to stock, you are going to have to use Asus, and finally it takes about a month I believe from time it is shipped to return in your hand.

Hi!
Screen ripple is present on all devices so nothing to do there. But the other issues are more than enough to RMA it. It took about 10 days for me to get mine back from ASUS Sweden.

So if you press harder than normal on sides with black screen you dont get ripple? Because Ive had this on all my seven different Nexus tablets.

i just tried with a white background and a black background, i pressed as hard as i dare without breaking the glass but nothing is happening...... lol im saying it like i want it to lmao
EDIT: ok i think i just saw it, but it "ONLY" happens on the lockscreen? i tried bring up an app in the same colour and pressing but no change .. it only seems to happen when i re-light the screen to lockscreen,... but yeah looks like i was wrong there an it is present even if only in such scenario. i stand co-rrected

Is my screen dieing?

I keep getting random laginess and screen unresponsiveness. It doesn't seem to be rom specific as it has happened on cm7, myns 2.2, and now the rooted stock leak. There is a bright white spot that has been there since day 1 and that seems to be where it becomes most unresponsive. It also randomly scrolls and even the capacative buttons become unresponsive.

seems like your digitizer is lifting off the screen because mine would do the same until I fixed it by heating the screen with a hair drier for a bit then pushing the digitizer glass in around the edges.
The white spot is a very common defect-> my phone has it as well.
So its DIY or sprint tep to fix it. Good luck.
Problem with sprint is I think unless it does it all the time I don't think they will fix it. The closest store to me sucks, the last time I brought it in they told to just smash it because they wouldn't fix it. Maybe I will call customer service tomorrow as I don't see any physical defects, the screen is not lifting

Fresh warm 2.2 install, just did it again, so definetly hardware failure, I will call sprint tomorrow!

I tried the hairdryer thing, worked fine for 5 days, now the unresponsiveness is starting again, going to unroot and call sprint because u don't think there I'd a repair center near me

Sprint is sending me a refurb. Gambling Iguess, but my phone is unusable right now.

Who knows you might get lucky , I wasn't. My original and refurb both have the screen issue but I can live with it. Just make sure to clean the screen regularly and u should be good.
I clean my screen daily, we will see. It is fine now, but an hour ago I couldn't do anything. Had to last really hard and beat on the screen to get it to work. 3 returns and you get a new one right?

i have the light spot. Pretty sure its caused by heat. . Took it in and had the screen replaced by a repair center. It also had light leaks that also got fixed. The new screen is doing the light spots again though. I'm willing to to bet you have a novatec lcd panel. When it happened to me I took a pole and everyone who had this problem had the novatec over the epson. If my xoom does it ill be pretty pissed. My friend has a droidx that also has a light spot in the same area as my evo. Bottom middle, a little off center to the right. Am I right? Neither have screen unresponsiveness though.

Actually for the screen I just turn it off and on and my problems go away.
This is actually my 2nd phone. First one the charging port broke off, I kept it and got a refurb. Then I dropped my refurb and cracked the screen. So I opened up and swapped my old evo's screen to my new one. Works fine, now.

Your right, its a defect in the novatech lcd, hence the change to epson lcd on newer hardware revisions
ok now that you mention it alex I do have screen unresponsiveness but I also fix by screen off then back on. Its random and I thought it was a cyanogen thing as I've been using that from for a long time now.

I had the impression of it being the rom early on but after multiple flashes, its the hardware. I believe its due to the combination of lcd lifting and heat from the cpu. I had my swype keyboard on screen one day and noticed that the screen went berserk on/near the white spot on the lcd by watching the trace line

Yup same here and I have a novatec. And turning the screen off and on doesn't have much affect. I have to do that 5 or 6 times, and run my thumbs from the bottom to the top pressing very hard, then it will start to work again
definitely not rom specific, as I am now completely unrooted running 3.70.
Maybe I will get get a refurb version 4

Help.. URGENT help.. I cracked my screen.

So my Nexus had the screen lift.. I was just curious, and wanted to see the back of it.
Took the back cover off, no problem. I didn't really do anything except look around. When I wanted to pop the back cover back in, I had trouble with one corner.. it just wouldn't pop in. So i pushed that corner a bit (I swear I didn't really use that much strength) but I turned the device around and saw the corner of the glass was cracked. It didn't reach the pixeled part of the screen, it was only at the black border.
So I thought- ah.. oh well it was my fault. I was pissed.. but who was I to blame right? I'll just live with it.
Here comes the problem.. I pushed the Power button, the lock screen came on as usual. However, it seems to have absolutely no response to my touches at all. I tried touching every single corner... NOTHING.
There is absolutely nothing I can do with this device right now.. Except 1. power it on, 2. take a screen shot.
Can anyone tell me what to do now? I've taken the device out of the states. The country I am in do have Asus office. I know the warranty probably does not cover this. I would be willing to pay for a new screen- but does anything know how much it will cost?
Sigh.. any help/comment would be nice. I'm totally devastated right now. I know it's my fault for not being careful. But I am able to go traveling next week, and was looking forward to reading books on it etc.
If it were me, I'd send it back and get a replacement since it had screen lift and that was the only reason you opened it...

Well I'm not in the U.S, and won't be anytime soon. My friend bought it over for me. Tomorrow I will call the local Asus office and ask them about it.
In the meanwhile I might just buy the micro-USB to USB cable, and use a mouse to control it. Although That will look ridiculous as I'll have to find a flat surface to use the mouse everytime. Is there some other USB controller I can use to control the screen?
Also I don't really know much about digitizers.. once you crack one corner, does it mean the entire thing is not usable anymore?
I had very small screen lift issue. Barely noticeable. But with this official nexus 7 cover seems to keep it down

Screen burn?!

So it seems that my screen on my tablet did not turn off last night in my blurex case and I now have screen burn. I can clearly see October 12 2:31am and the lock icon on any of my my screens has anyone had this issue yet so far? If so due to the nature of what has happened thing Asus would replace it?

Wow. I didn't think LCD's had screen burn in?! Try to download one of those Stuck Pixel apps that flash the whole screen through multiple different colors. You can typically get rid of it by inversing.
Although I haven't had any LCD monitor get burn in... ever.

I had this problem too, my solution is not to let the screen turned on constantly
My co-worker has this problem. On any dark app you can see the bottom icons on the home screen. He leaves the screen on laying around sometimes, but I didn't think it was THAT bad.
The same happened to me a month ago I just hard rebooted it and it dissapeared by itself
Sent from my GT-I9100
Wait a day or two and see if it disappears.
Yeah at first I was freakin out even a little angry but what I did was downloaded stuck pixel fixer (lol) from the market ran it and then lowered down the backlight to the lowest it could go with root dim and left it on a white page for 20 minutes. Surprisingly enough it is just about gone.
One thing is with the blurex case after a reboot and having the cover closed it doesn't seem to turn off the screen even tho the magnet is touching. You have to wait till it boots then turn it off or close the lid. All in all its resolved. I know it doesn't tend to happen with LCDS but that was the best way to put it

Weird defect on screen.

Hello , I've had my Nexus 4 for about two weeks now. Tonight I was looking at an app that had a solid white background and I noticed in the upper right portion of my display a small anomaly. It's hard to see it directly in front of you. But if you look at it at an angle from the bottom ( I was laying in bed looking upwards towards the phone) you an kinda see it. It's almost like a line in the screen. Where you can almost see light behind it. It's about a 1/8 inch. It's brighter towards the screen but fades out more in the middle of the screen and doesn't go all the way across. Anyone know anything about this? If I have to send this back for warranty do I need to flash back to stock? Is Google like everyone else or are they cool with the flashing.. I would like to get this fixed. It's small but now I can really notice it... Anyone else got an opinion or thought?

The rule is if you're not happy, get it exchanged. Mine has really barely visible lines on white screens, but I don't really notice it. But I still might give google a call...I have had it since November though...

Called Google last night and ordered a replacement. Is it necessary to return everything to stock? Will they try to give me a hassle over warranty replacement with a custom rom? Yeah now that I've seen it it's driving me crazy lol...

For some reason my screen has a bunch of little squares and lines when my screen is turned off. Seems a little odd but don't know if this is normal? Maybe just how the display is?

Had the same problem. Looked like a crack under the glass. Got a replacement that is much better. I reflashed Mine to stock before sending back though not sure if it's necessary.

Moto X Screen burn-in

I bought my Moto X around the end of September and about two weeks after getting it, I had a screen burn-in from the notification bar and navigation bar. I let Motorola know and they happily replaced it. However few weeks after owning the second one I experienced the issue again and I let them know. They told me they were stunned and that I was literally the only person who had reported the issue.
What I am wondering is if anyone else has experienced this. I know it is a common problem with AMOLEDs, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon.

I saw burn in on a display model at Best Buy. It was the big Motorola M logo that displays at the boot animation. If you looked at a white web page or any solid, but light colored image, you could see the ghostly circle the size of a quarter complete with the swishy M in the middle of the screen. Got them to open a second demo model and boot it up so I could see a clean screen and bring it to their attention. Weird thing to have burned in, too.

Op did you leave both phones display on for 2weeks straight at 100% brightness? Lol
I have had mine for 2 months, do at least 4 hours sot daily, most of which is on reddit and xda, so nav and status are almost always static... I have zero sign of burn in.
I had it pretty good on my s3, but I blame ingress for that... Being outside playing so much and had it at 100% brightness because that screen was so dark... Even then it took at least 2 months before I saw any burn in and I was playing A LOT!
Can't imagine how you would get burn in on two devices, each in two weeks... Seems like that's a feat that you have to try and do, lol.

I'd be hard pressed to believe this as well... I've had numerous amoled devices and abused the crap out of them and even then, it took months to get any sort it noticeable burn in... If it were one device then I wouldn't second guess it, chalk it up to manufacture defect... But two in a row? I'm curious as to what the op uses his phones for and if he ever turns off the screens... Even store display models take a while to get burn in and they are on 3-4 times as much as a typical power user.

I'll have to send you a pic of my GNex then, so you can see the perfect "ghost" of a Pandora logo in the middle of the screen from running the display full time in my car dock.
I also remember similar complaints when the GNex first came out, of people claiming they were getting burn-in on the notification bar area, and I thought they were ridiculous at the time. Now, not so much.
It happened to my gnex, so I'm not surprised that it happened on this phone too.
I'm not saying you're faking it, but 2 weeks is a little too soon for it to be happening. The gnex only had the issue after a year or so. Are you keeping the display on all the time when charging or something?
They will eventually burn in if you set the screen to never time out and leave it displaying the same thing for hours or days on end. Most store models have some level of burn it. In normal use cases it should never be an issue though.

Sent from my Nexus 10 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Just passing by, but 2 weeks is entirely possible.
If you keep using the phone with the notification bar displayed and then two weeks later open a full screen browser, you will most likely notice burn in if you look close enough.
It's extremely easy to do.
I bought an S3 from ebay with real bad screen burn in (that the seller didn't mention). She actually didn't believe me and accused me of scamming her until I replied back with a contact name and number that was burned into the top of the screen from the messaging app (the keyboard was also burned in, I guess she constantly texted this person).
I think burn in is more likely to happen when brightness is higher. I had a GNex and GS3 that never got any sort of burn in but I also rarely had the brightness above 50%.
you know, now that I look, I have it too. It's faint, and I thought it was from the Nova Launcher beta, but ****, this is screen burn in. Damn.
---------- Post added at 05:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:13 PM ----------
I don't even use my phone that much. Generally around 1.5 or 2 hours screen time per day. Brightness is about half. Kinda crazy.
Recommend using an app such as:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.feetstech.screenburn&hl=en
to minimize this. Most plasma TV's have something like this built in as they are also prone to burn-in. Use it for 10 minutes every once in a while (even if you don't see burn in) and it should prevent it.
I got screen burn in on my S4 after 2 months. But I also blame ingress for that. I have a X coming and hope to minimize that by not playing ingress so much or play on another device. One thing that I do for the status bar to help out is with nova launcher I have it set to swipe the notification bar on top away. I try to leave it off the screen as much as possible. But yes amoled screens suck for burn in.
I usually turn my phone to the 270 degree position to have the navigation bars switch sides every now and then. That helps a bit.
And with AMOLEDs, it's more important to turn off the screen when not in use rather than let it time out. I have mine set to 10 minutes, but I usually manually turn off the screen because I know AMOLEDs are prone to burn-in over time.
