New cell carrier in Canada, Wind Mobile, AWS band.
Their rates are WAY better than robbers/bell.
Robbers Dream will NOT under any circumstances work on AWS band, and they don't have EDGE to fall back on.
Anyone interested can use TMOBILE BRANDED or ADP1/2
So how does that make my dream obsolete if I can still use it with Bell and Rogers :|
And I don't know any information about this new company, so I'll assume they're crap!

The fact that they cost less and give you WAY WAY more, and the FIRM KNOWLEDGE that robbers are a bunch of evil greedy bastards... its a no-brainer to switch, and therefore anything stuck to robbers is hopelessly obsolete.
And if you don't get it, then you're blind or retarded.

interesting way of looking at things you got there. LOL
Even if they are crap... the choice is still between expensive crap and cheap crap. If its the same crap, its better to pay less for it.
hahahaha!!! wow i feel sorry for canada.. though the USA isnt much better anyway.

You're the thread starter, you should have included more information:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/16/wind-mobile-launches-in-canada-t-mobile-gets-a-spectrum-buddy/
Despite some last-minute drama with the government, Canada's WIND Mobile has launched today, bringing to the table an interesting new low-cost competitor to the nation's giant incumbents, Rogers, Bell, and Telus. Though its network -- based on last year's AWS auction -- lacks the footprint of the bigger guys, the pricing is pretty compelling: its $15 voice plan offers twice the minutes of low-cost competitors Koodo and Fido (which are really just fronts for Telus and Rogers, anyway) and CAD $35 (about $33) wins you unlimited data on your BlackBerry. Speaking of BlackBerrys, WIND is rolling out the Bold 9700 as one of its launch devices alongside the HTC Maple (known as the Dash 3G in the States), the Samsung Gravity, the Huawei U519, and the E181 USB modem. Service is only live in Toronto and Calgary at the moment, but the limited distribution doesn't seem to be holding people back -- WIND's site has been up and down all morning.

And for all I know they are crap. I know nothing about their coverage..
" Service is only live in Toronto and Calgary at the moment"
and no HSPA? It is crap.
So, if there are any Rogers customers that want to switch to Wind Mobile, they could use a US T-Mobile G1 to use the 1700MHz frequency. In turn, if an AT&T customer bought an unlocked Rogers Dream, they could run on AT&Ts 3G network.
Who is up for the Rogers Dream / T-Mobile G1 swap?
I have a TMo G1 running on AT&Ts Edge network (which would run on Wind Mobile's 3G network). I want a Rogers Dream (which would run on the AT&T 3G network.)

How about....
Service EVERYWHERE that robbers is now (at $0.25/min when outside of Toronto or Calgary -- note that robbers long distance is $0.35/min), no long distance charges when calling in the same PROVINCE (i.e. call from toronto to north bay FREE, even for a 20 hour call), HSPA *ONLY* (there IS NO EDGE to fall back on).
Now think about this; if you are not in toronto, you would have to pay long distance with robbers at $0.35/min + airtime. With wind, you pay $0.25/min roaming, NO long distance, and NO airtime.
Data at $35 unlimited on wind, or $80/5GB on robbers.... still seems a no-brainer here.

Yes, you are right!
I would swap if I had a robbers dream, but I have an adp1, so I'm set to go with wind.
I actually went into their store yesterday and had my wallet and ID out to make the switch, but they don't have the number porting set up quite yet (supposed to be within a couple of weeks). I want to keep my current number, so I'm going to wait until they have that ready.
I'm actually going to end up paying more at wind, BUT, instead of unlimited incoming (in toronto), NO data, negligible outgoing, I'm going to have unlimited incoming, unlimited outgoing, unlimited data, free long distance in ontario, better long distance rates to everywhere outside of ontario ($0.15/min instead of $0.35/min), and way better rates outside of toronto ($0.25/min instead of $0.35/min+airtime+outside_of_toronto_fee). Never signed up to robbers data since their rates should be considered ILLEGAL.
Keep in mind, that if you leave Wind's home zone, if you're using a phone that supports Wind/T-mobile 3G, you will drop to EDGE data while roaming on the Rogers network

So? You really want to pay robbers' data rates which you have to pay when roaming? Best thing to do is disable data roaming altogether!

$55 for unlimited data is considered cheap, I'm not meant to have that plan they screwed up.
Data plans in Canada start at $50 a month for 500mb data.

Well that's not entirely true. You can get 500mb of data for $25. If you were lucky enough you could have gotten 6gigs of data for $30 from Rogers. That's what my financee and I have.
Hey guys
I bought my nexus one the week it came out and have been putting up with edge for a while. I have wifi at home and work so I haven't had to suffer too much.
I have had ATT for 5-6 years and have been off contract for a while.
I looked at T-Mobile's pricing for their Even More+ no contract plans and I am paying about the same amount per month as the 500min+text+web plan.
I know reception will vary by area but I live and typically stay in the Pittsburgh area.
My current choices are:
1. Keep my nexus and stay on ATT (not likely)
2. Keep my nexus and switch to T-Mobile
3. Sell my Nexus and buy the ATT compatible version and stick with ATT (seems like too much work and will likely cost me more)
What would you guys recommend?
Thanks for the help!!
TMO is awful in my area so when I was deciding the same, I went with selling my launch nexus one and buying the ATT compat. version. I have been quite pleased with my speeds (2.xMbps down / 1.x Mbps up) on average.
You can sell your phone on ebay for about 500 (that's what mine went for) and in the end, a new one will run you about 30 dollars.
it depends on where you live. If you live in a major area like NYC where tmobile has good 3G coverage then get tmobile, it will be cheaper and tmobile doesnt screw you over in ways that att does.
Just do what's best in your situation. I was a long time AT&T sub as well. I moved to T-Mobile because I like the Even More Plus plan, fits my usage on my phone as well as my budget. Plus it's easier to turn in my phone bill on my expense report at work.

Don't forget to factor that if you stay with AT&T you will pay $30/mo for smartphone data, not $15 for medianet. AT&T will auto upgrade you to the smartphone data if you're currently on medianet.
T-Mobile is definitely way cheaper overall, you can even get 500 mins + unlimited text for $39, then get the web2go plan (using the internet2.voicestream.com APN on your phone, instead of epc.tmobile.com) for $10. Total will be $49 which is a great deal - AT&T can't beat that.
At the same time although its cheaper with T-mobile....The signal in most cities switches between edge and 3g alot of the time....And alot of buildings you will go straight to edge. And edge for me dosent even work! So although i have T-mobile if sprint wasnt coming i would go with AT&T. "Personal experience/advice"

True, in some buildings you will have to deal with EDGE (but of course, you may also have wifi in the building to make up for that)...
But in and around NYC, you're pretty much guaranteed to have 3G, and it works quite well.

Well I currently pay 19.99 a month for internet with ATT. I have the OLD "smartphone" that I picked up when I got my 8525. I had that for almost 3 years and then just finished up a year with an E71(not X) and never had a problem.
What's this web2go you speak of?(I'll go search the forums as well)
I'll also have to find out if I can get a student discount with T-Mo like I do with ATT.
Thanks for all the help so far! Hopefully I don't come across as stupid or anything. I own a small deli/restaurant and work about 12 hours a day. My father has been in the hospital for a while and I am also taking care of the rest of my family so my time has become extremely limited.
Obviously I've been trying to find ways to reduce costs. 49 a month would be amazing
I've had both and prefer T-Mobile.. they have far better customer service, and their coverage here in north San Diego is far superior.. I get HSDPA speeds everywhere I go with T-Mobile and no more dropped calls.
Personally, I'd go for T-Mobile if I were you. You guys already have access to the 3MBit 3G service over there.

If he's signing up for an Even More Plus plan then he has as long as he wants to cancel - there is no contract. Since he already has the N1 this would be the best type of plan to get.
Well I think that I will try to swing by a T-Mobile store tomorrow if I have time.
I'll get a SIM card and an Even More Plus plan. 500min+Text and web2go.
Has anyone had any problems using web2go with the nexus?
I'll try to see if I can get the activation fee waived and also add a student discount.
Anyone have any experience with porting a number later on? I'd like to try it for a week or so before porting my ATT number over and cutting that account(if I'm happy)

The Even More Plus plans already include data. I'm using it myself with the 500 minute tier plan just fine with my N1.
edit: I ported too and that took a few hours and was fairly painless from AT&T
I'd stay with AT&T if I were you.
I switched to t-mobile from at&t to get the n1 with 3g coverage and I can honestly say in Houston, at&t has far more coverage and is faster.
I had pretty much the same choice between AT&T and T-Mobile, and I ended up just sticking with AT&T and buying the compatible version because I split my time between Pennsylvania and Virginia, and T-Mo coverage in Virginia is spotty at best (even with AT&T roaming agreements).
However, since you're Pittsburgh, it might be good to take the 14 evaluation period as others have said and see if your happy with T-Mobile in the area (plus the rate plans with data will be comparable, or T-Mo will be slightly cheaper).

Will YOU be leaving?
If the merger goes through, then yes. I have been a tmobile customer for 7 years. I have been satisfied with the hardware, the accounts, and even the customer support. Especially the customer support.
AT&T want a stellar company before the SBC buyout, but it became terrible after. I expect the same thing if Tmobile is consumed.
I do not look forward to finding a new carrier.
I don't think I'll leave TMO unless AT&T acquires it and doesn't let me keep my current plan and pricing. I travel accross USA and do not have a voice coverage problem with Tmobile. Its excellent with few to none dropped calls. But the data sucks, my phone switches to edge 80% of the time as compared to my co workers AT&T and Sprint.
Not to mention I pay less than $160 for 2 lines with unlimited everything.... The next cheapest is sprint @ $210
If the buyout goes through, absolutely leaving. I will never be an AT&T customer again, even if it means taking my Vibrant over to Simple Mobile.
Ginger Clones of the World Unite!!! via the XDA App
I'll be leaving as well. As far as when, that depends on when the merger goes through and who gets the SGSII. One things for sure, I'll NEVER use AT&T again.
I agree with most the other comments....... I pay 152 per month for 2 lines unlimited everything......... and I use it............ When and IF ATT does get T-mobile. . . then I will have to find a new carrier, I really like TMO but tempus fugit......
As far as the customer loss I do not see that as a real big issue, if I remember correctly, the average for all the major carriers is between 6-8 million per carrier per year or as it is called in the industry the "churn"
I agree with KWKSLVR it is about who gets the S2
It depends on my dad....he pays me and my sister's phone bill cuz we're in college...no matter if we stay or go...i still gotta unlock my Vibrant for another carrier
If the plans stay the same then ill stay plus some might have better coverage
in areas they never did
T-Mobile coverage is terrible Verizon has the iphon now and at&t had some good Android phones.
I'll be leaving.
Also, t-mobile hasn't cared about building out their data network for a long time. Data id more important than voice to me. I use 50 voice minutes a month but 2gb data. I don't mind paying more for a better network...

any other provider sounds better then att. i would gladly switch to boost with an unlocked android. or even metropcs has got a few good androids to date. att is making a losing bet unless they all of a sudden change their pricing plans.

If you knew T-Mobile coverage was bad in your area perhaps you should have started out with a different carrier in the first place. Here in Dallas I get 3G or H almost everywhere.
Add me to the list of people who will leave T-Mobile the day AT&T goes through. Keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen.

Hi idiot.
I did. No one else had coverage but t-mobile thanks to voice roaming, but at&t put a New 3g tower up so now they have everything. I went from at&t to sprint before t-mobile.
Thanks for using that pea sized brain of yours, though.
At&t... Building out their network.
T-mobile... Dead end.
And traveling with a t-mobile phone is a lesson in frustration compared to at&t other Verizon.
I'm with them cause I live in a rural area and had no choice then.
NOW I do... So ill be leaving.
Don't care where you live and how your signal is, tbh. even at the hspa+ market down the interstate your phone can go from full 3g to edge at any random time.
T-mobile are not defendable, so stop ****ing trying Even with good phones and low prices people are leaving, and for a reason. They aren't spending more just cause they can... There are sizeable cities here that can't get more than 3 bars gprs from t-mobile here, but the other three carriers have full 3g
Thank you.

I've been a T-Mobile customer for almost 5 years. Up until I transferred to the college in this town now, my 3G data service has been great. Im actually so unhappy w/ T-Mobile..Right now i live in Huntsville,TX where I goto college at and T-Mobile is beyond garbage here. Personally, If I'm going to pay the same amount of money as someone who has 3G/4G coverage, i have to have to have the same equal coverage. I'm back and fourth on GPRS and Edge here missing important calls like clockwork. I can get a similar plan with AT&T for the same amount with 4G service here in this town. (Trust me i work for Radioshack and I know all about both companies plans and prices as well as restrictions) When the Samsung Galaxy S2 comes out this summer for AT&T, I'm leaving T-Mobile to give AT&T my money instead. I'm not handing over my whole pay check for a Verizon phone LOL and I'm not going to Sprint with their 3G coverage map looking like a pepperoni pizza LOL
For the most part, T-Mobile has been beyond great as far as customer serviceand pricing, its just that voice and 3G data coverage is, always, and forever will be their weakness and that doesn't work for me.

Hey there,
I'm going down to the U.S for a trip to Darien Lake for a weekend soon (my family and I are Canadian). I need phone/text/internet access with fast speeds and very reliable service. I have heard 'Straight Talk' tossed around a bit on these forums, though I don't know if I would be allowed to purchase it (as a non-U.S citizen). I have an unlocked N7000 Galaxy Note to use on any service and would prefer to use it if possible. So, it is in this situation that I humbly ask for advice from my fellow XDA'ers.

I believe you can just go to straighttalk.com and order yourself a sim card [choose AT&T sim]and a $45 month unlimited card. Should be around $60 shipped.
Edit: I'm not sure they ship internationally. Could you have it shipped to the location you are staying in the states?

Go with Straight Talk. ST uses ATT's network so very reliable in most places in the US and fast data as well.
I live in Rochester, used to live in Buffalo, so I travel between the cities quite a bit, right through Darien Lake area.
I would look at Red Pocket (goredpocket-dot-com). They use the AT&T Go Phone prepaid coverage (You can google the map, then put in Pembroke, NY as the address. Pembroke is town adjacent to Darien Lake). You will see coverage is fine there, and I've had no problems with calls through there.
I'm sure you can buy a Red Pocket SIM on Amazon and have it delivered to Canada. Red Pocket used to cater to the Asian Market who would be coming to the U.S., So signing up from Canada probably won't be a problem.
I should also float the question the other way, what's the best Prepaid SIM to use when I visit Canada? This will be the first time I'll be taking a GSM phone to Canada (I previously had Sprint).
straighttalk is the way to go. they have a cheaper 30 dollar plan also.

I looked around recently, Petro-Canada looked like a pretty good bet.
The problem is, us getting Petro-Canada SIMs is likely the same problem he'll have trying to get a Straight Talk SIM or Red Pocket SIM - They won't ship internationally, not even across the US/CAN border. I know Straight Talk's BYOD SIMs are mail-order only, you cannot purchase them in brick-and-mortar stores. Dunno if Petro-Canada SIMs are easier to find in their gas stations.
I live near the NY/PA border and have been looking into SIMs for if I ever want to make a trip to Montreal.
Yeah get the ST Sim and get it delivered to someone here in the States to either forward it to you in Canada our have it waiting here for you to pick up in the States. The Sims are sent by Fed Ex ground unless you want it delivered quicker and you can pay for 2 day or next day shipping.

The only reason I suggest Red Pocket over straight Talk is that there's an unofficial daiy cap with straight talks data (go ahead and read about the problem in the forums) where as with Red Pocket you get to use your block of data however you like. You cam tether, use it all in one day, etc.

It's "monthly" but you only need to get it a month at a time. It's not a contract, no need to sign up for multiple months.
The more basic "pay as you go" plans are so basic that a Note will exceed the cost of a better plan rapidly.
As for Canadian prepaid, I'm really not sure. I've never had to use prepaid, I've always had a plan. Rogers/Bell/Telus are the 'big 3' companies in Canada, which all have more or less the same service and quality - the difference is in pricing and packages. I've always been a Telus user, as they have very clear and fair pricing, but I know many who are on Rogers (not too many on Bell though). Bell is usually more expensive for what you get. Whatever you do, stay away from Wind Mobile - their coverage sucks, their customer service is terrible, they are a royal pain to deal with and they only use T-Mobile's bands.
Prepaid SIMs are pretty easy to get. I've seen them alot at gas stations, Walmart, convenience stores, 7/11, etc. It's impossible to get unlimited data here in Canada though, even on contract you can't get it. Our providers have been very strict about that. And on top of that, within the past few months, they've upped their efforts to increase pricing and reduce caps on their data offerings.
I believe the major cellular companies to check out are Rogers/Telus/Bell (big 3) and their subsidiaries Koodoo, Virgin Mobile, Fido. This should help:

Anyways, back to my issue, I'm going to need alot of data as much data as possible (~4 to 6 gb). Red pocket seems pretty good but they only give you 2GB of data. I'm looking at Boost Mobile right now but they use Sprints network, which is supposedly slow, but they don't cap their data (supposedly). The unofficial data cap on Straight Talk makes me want to avoid it, as I've read its 100mb/day which is very small.

I would rather have data cap than ever deal with sprints network again.

The ST $30 "All you need" plan may only be available on their phones and not on an unlocked phone from another GSM carrier. Hope I'm wrong. See http://straighttalksim.com/index.php

Thanks for the advice on the Canadian Prepaid.
As cor your issue, I believe Boost is CDMA only because it's runs on Sprint's native coverage.

Hey all,
I tried searching, and read through countless pages, but could only really find info about moving from US to Canada.
I have a Roger's GN3. Hoping to use it occasionally while travelling in the US.
Can you let me know what unlocking or other work I'll need to do to the phone.
And what carrier in the US is best supported for 4G, 3G, etc.
Thanks,
-Peter

the best overall provider for Canadians residents for short trips down south is probably Roam Mobility (http://www.roammobility.com/talk-text-data).
for 3.95 per day (the smallest plan for 1 day), you are getting unlimited calls and text to US and Canadian numbers when in the USA and 300MB of data.
With this provider, you have access to 2G/3G T-Mobile's network... probably LTE at some time in the future.
So you only need your device to be sim unlocked and that's it...
I Often travel to the USA and unlike here, you can go to a 7-11 and buy a prepaid sim card with data and minutes. If not, roam mobility is also a good alternative as long as you're in metropolitan areas because their coverage sucks. I drive from Montreal to Florida about twice a year and don't have coverage 80% of the way down except when i come close to big cities. It also becomes quite expensive if you're looking for any service for a trip of over 1 week, easily costing you 50$ - 100$
But, my current alternative of choice is to stick with Rogers. They have a rewards program which basically gives you points for every dollar you spend on your bill and you can then redeem travel packs. I have about 9000 points and for about 6500pts you can have 40 minutes of call time and unlimited texts for 1 month and because its redeemed on points its free. (thats if you're looking for something with no data). You first have to subscribe for the reward program, the good thing is you can use your points for what you want like upgrades, extra data, extra minutes or other perks www.rogersfirstrewards.rogers.com
Roam Mobility is 27,95 for a week... Unlimited talk and text +2GB of data. You have 2G coverage nearly everywhere (at least on the highway between Montreal and Miami... And 3G in big cities.
It beats anything that Rogers can offer for the price.
Roam Mobility is easy to refill on the web, in Canadian dollars before leaving Canada. Something not always possible with a US prepaid service.
You can even easily buy your sim card online...

It certainly doesn't beat free! And no, it's not true, roam doesn't have coverage nearly anywhere, i used it last year and it cut out in the long stretches between cities.

You don't have data or inexpensive data with what Rogers is offering... And 40 minutes might be enough for you... But it's not comparable with unlimited.
Also I'm curious... Where did you lost coverage with Roam Mobility on the highway? I've went once to Miami and I regularly go to New York and Boston... And I always have coverage... 3G in the cities and 2G outside.

Dont assume anything. You have no idea what OP needs. Maybe 40 minutes and unlimited text is more than enough.
As for coverage, i mentionned where it cuts off, i cant be more specific as i have not mapped where my phone lost connection but all i can say is that ive been using it for 2 years twice a year and it happends that i stop at truck stops or hotels in small cities or between cities and i couldn't text my family to give them an update when i needed to, had to pop my rogers sim back in and connect to ATT. It was along 95, thats all i can say. I do remember loosing full connection somewhere in NY about 2 hours before border until about 30 minutes from border, it was in the mountainous part of the state.
I don't personally need data and also the big problem with roam is you lose your phone number. It's great if you have no business calls or are expecting phone calls but it's not an option for me anymore to lose my phone number. I rather pay 50$ for a travel plan and keep my line connected
