[Q]pressure sensor? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Nexus 10 specifications state that it includes a pressure sensor. Is this related to the touch screen, or is it related to atmospheric/ barometric pressure?

Well, don't know for a fact but just downloaded Barometric HD from play store and it is giving me readings

Atmospheric. It is useful to improve GPS connection speed and accuracy, since pressure helps the device with an aproximation of heigh

Wow, they STILL couldn't fix the compass in EI22

Go ahead, check your compass apps. They STILL didn't fix the compass inversion problem with EI22. That's hilarious. And also why GPS is still shoddy.
just having the official GB is good enough for me

This is why I'm still convinced that there was a flub on the production line that resulted in many of our phones having the compass installed upside-down - the software assumes a certain value is north/east/etc. instead of using calibration (or gravity) to determine the correct layout

All you'd need to do is reverse it in the code, right?

This would either require two versions (or more, depending on how many different orientations exist), or additional code to calibrate appropriately. I would vote for the second method...

Kinda need if you use something like Dishpointer Pro. But anyways, I just tested the compass and Dishpointer Pro is spot on with EI22.
There is a GPS program that will calibrate the compass. This fixed the issue for me.
I don't typically use the compass, but I was trying to get my GPS to work on the ACS ICS rom.
I calibrated the compass using GPS Tools and all is good.

My compass is correct on GPS Status app.
Some of you are reporting correct compass readings from stock? Interesting. So if that's true, then it is either a hardware or irreversible firmware issue that Samsung can't fix.
I always hypothesized that since the board on the Epic was a split PCB due to the sliding keyboard and CDMA radio, the magnometer was physically oriented inversely to all other Galaxy S devices thus simply a software issue they wouldn't fix. But if they realized this and made a hardware revision to correct this (as it now seems), then I can see why they refuse to fix it. They would fix the reversed compasses and break those who weren't.
Also, I know you can fix the problem with GPS status and doing horizontal calibration with the phone face-down.
And just a last note, the mgnetomer settings and binary driver in GB have been replaced with an automatically calibrating 'geomagneticd' daemon.
To those who don't understand why I mentioned that this is probably the reason GPS is shoddy; the supplementary data (XTRA) to assist in GPS locks provides the GPS daemon with up-to-date geomagnetic data, atmospheric ephermis data, and accurate positions of NAVSTAR satellites in orbit. Now think about it. If the device thought it were facing up and oriented due-north, but in reality it was face-down and south, it would have a lot more difficulty making an initial lock as well as maintaining one if it were ever moved. Follow?
Feel free to tear my science to pieces if you have a better explanation than I do.

Sounds good but a gps doesn't need to know which way it is facing. It just picks up a signal no matter which way it is facing.

To get a faster fix, it uses XTRA to get precise locations of other satellites.

If so, that's still pretty crummy. Such a hardware revision should've been made identifiable to software so that the appropriate driver can decide which orientation transformation to apply.

Barometer

I noticed the Nexus 4 will have a barometer. Do other phones have a barometer and I've just missed this? What can this be used for?

Galaxy Nexus did......but the built-in barometer that's got so many of us scratching our heads has a much different purpose. Android engineer Dan Morrill took to the social pages of Google+ to clarify the confusion. Turns out, Sammy added the barometer to help the device more rapidly acquire a GPS lock by delivering altitude coordinates to the required latitude and longitude GPS equation. From Engadget article.
The Galaxy Nexus has a barometer. It is used for things like getting your altitude to improve GPS location determination.
That's nifty. It will also help me track my altitude during my next 30km+ jump.

Indeed....same article stated as much.
Is anything known about the quality of the barometer readings? Are they accurate enough for altitude?
You can use your barometer to contribute to pressureNET! It's a free, open source barometer network for Android. I'm building it in hopes to create a weather network of unprecedented size and resolution in order to improve short-term, local weather prediction.

Does anyone know its resolution ? The Barometer on my Galaxy S3 is pretty good, I'm a paraglider pilot and i use it as a Variometer, it works pretty well.
Since i'll get a Nexus 4, its time to get more info on that barometer.
How dare anyone collate the atmospheric pressure imposed on thee.......... How dare they?
Flouride in the water supply is bad enough!
barometer for calls/ mic
Actually the barometer is used for mic noise cancellation, it is used to calibrate the pressure on the mic to be nicelly centered for calls. :cyclops:
I thought the barometer was used with the Garmin car app, which plugs into my OBD II sensor in my car, in order to measure how much psi of boost is coming from my turbocharger.......
-.-"
I noticed a few days ago that the Nexus 4 came with a barometer sensor that is used to help the GPS accuracy. I decided to test this out using Barometer HD. It worked great and allowed me to save my pressure data.
However, the past two days it's been saying "No barometer sensor detected". Thinking this was GPS related I tried turning it on, but no luck. I ran Z - Device Test and it says I do not have the sensor either.
Anyone know what's going on?

[Q] Strange issue with display

I have 2 Nexus 4 (one for sister and one for girlfriend), which were both purchased last week and arrived this week. Both their serial number starts with 301K.
Here is the weird part: for one of the phone, it is very easy to see under the glass. When there is adequate lighting and the display is off, it is very easy to the see the circuit-like component just under the glass. This is not true for the other phone. The display also has a more of a yellow tint than the normal one. Otherwise, the display looks and works fine.
Anyone else also experiencing this, or know what's the cause of this issue?
Thanks!
This is how the pattern looks like under the screen:

It's because the touch screen sensor (I don't know the correct term) is closer. Basically it isn't an issue, it's a design. Nothing to worry about.

I read somewhere that it was indeed the sensor at the top, mixed with the old technology too.
The apps I know it works with are stock email, stock texts and flipboard. Not sure what else. It doesn't even seem to work on lockscreen...

Samsung is using a super sensitive capacitative touchscreen that can sense your finger even when its a short distance from the screen, essentially. its the same reason that there's an option so that you can use it with gloves on
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I'm no engineer, but this is my basic understanding gleaned from reading wikipedia and other sources. Capacitive touchscreens work by sensing changes in an electrostatic field. Your finger is an electrical conductor, which distorts the field. In normal phones the field is calibrated to extend just past the surface of the touchscreen. The S4's electrostatic field is simply overcalibrated to sense your finger from a distance, and it's also why it works with gloves on.

nothing to do with the capacitive screen or proximity sensor. if the screen was THAT sensitive it'll be firing off to even the slightest atmospheric disturbance. actual workings are related to the 2 IR sensors flanking the speaker grill which individually log IR intensities emitted by ur finger in front of the screen. an algorithm then compares these values and works out where ur finger is pointing.
AFAIK it works with help of IR Sensor and/with Proximity Sensor
If screen sensitivity does this job then ...Nokia Lumia 920 to 520 all devices all should have this feature cuz all these devices have Super Sensitive screens

The air is much more inert than your finger. The proximity/IR sensors just blast IR beams away from the phone for things like Air Gestures and have nothing to do with Air View. They certainly don't shoot beams across the surface of the screen to detect your finger. The finger hovering simply uses a more sensitive capacitive touchscreen, as Sony explains here:

This happened with me also.
The air view works in stock messaging app , gallery , flipboard and even when you dial a number if you have speed dial feeded.
For this you need to hold air view option in notification bar for about 2 seconds then a set of options will open. There you can switch on air view for messaging, gallery etc etc.

It will be the electromagnetic field that the screen is detecting from your skin/finger. The same way that on other screens, they don't work with gloves unless you have the special gloves that have conductive fingertips on them.
Nothing to do with the sensors on the top of the phone cos if you cover them up, air view still works! Plus the sensors aim out the top and at 90 degrees to the phone face, how would they sense something almost touching the screen on the bottom?

Air gesture issue

Yesterday my air gesture work normally, but today it wont work.
I dont know what happen.
I check sensor on *#0*# and air gesture sensor is not responding. but when try quick glance on air gesture setting, its working (just quick glance try).
Do you know how to fix this?
Maybe something to do with your digitizer. The digitizer produces a tiny magnetic field which collects data when distorted, this is how it tracks your finger and the spen.
