Alright so this is my first tablet/nexus experience. I've only used HTC products in the past and anyone that's been down that path knows the difference between s-off and unlocked. On HTC phones being unlocked means flashing the boot partition through fastboot where s-off will allow you to flash any partition through recovery. How does it work on a nexus?

Yep, there is no S-OFF with nexus devices so you are able to flash system, recovery, etc. after unlocking.

Either from the bootloader or from the Nexus 7 Toolkit, this stupid thing won't boot to recovery. I flashed from CM10.1 to cm10 after wiping cache and dalvik...now I cannot get to recovery. System boots after going back to stock and even after the CWM flash, but recovery seems to be non-existent. Using the toolkit mentioned I flashed CWM, and I cannot boot to this.
Does adb reboot recovery work

Try downloading ROM Manager from the play store. It will install recovery CMW for you and then you can boot to it. If you are trying to boot directory to recovery using the key press it will not work unless you have the tab plugged into a computer.. the N7 is funny that way.

Have you tried upgrading the bootloader to 4.31? That fixed my problem.

I've already done the upgrade to Android 4.2 when I was on stock. CWM I had from the Nexus 7 Toolkit. Even when I boot to custom recovery via that it just skips over it. When I had CWM installed I could boot to recovery via the reboot menu though so I dunno what the issue is.

What version of CWM did you flash? Perhaps try downloading CWM 6.0.1.9 and flashing it via fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.9-grouper.img
I don't think I need to do all that. Do I need to re-lock the bootloader, flash stock, unlock and flash CWM again or something? Trying to figure out why this device is such a pain in the ass. Even from the bootloader I can't boot to recovery after flashing it!!!

So how do I do this? My bootloader is version 3.34.
Pretty sure I bricked it. Just says booting failed. Friggin overmarketed P.O.S.
Anyone want to buy this?

Dang man calm down before you stroke out. Unless you did something seriously stupid it's not bricked.
And your ROM/flashing problems have nothing to do with the device itself.
Instead of rants, more details would help get you better answers.

Sure ill buy it, these things are hard to brick... what you want for it?
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk 2
It's booting now. Somehow flashing the stock ROM while locked soft bricks it.
So back to the drawing board, how do I get CWM back on here? This whole "adb push fastboot" yaddayadda is Greek to me.

as topic states....i want to flash store rom to make sure everything is deleted since settings factory reset did not do so. however, i want the bootloader to stay unlock and phone to retain root. thanks in advance!:victory:
Boot loader will stay unlocked, root will be deleted if you're wiping /system.

There is an app that will save your root.. It is voodoo something.. Will find it and tell you..
Voodoo ota root protector - search the play store.

If you flash factory image via fast boot you will lose root and custom kernel. Boot loader will stay open until you lock it again using toolkit or from factory image command via fast boot.

don't use toolkit. the command to relock bootloader is,
fastboot oem lock

Don't bother locking your bootloader. You'll just have to wipe everything the next time you go to root the phone or flash anything

Pay attention. He was responding to the post he quoted and telling that member the proper way to lock a bootloader.
Is it possible to flash twrp .img using flashboot without first unlocking the bootloader...
move the SuperSU .zip over to internal SD
flash with TWRP
and then install bootunlocker
I ask, because I dont want to lose all data by
Code:
fastboot OEM unlock
command and I am not sure if a custom recovery requires an unlocked bootloader (I assume recover is still strapped to initial handoff of bootloader)
Also, this seems both safer and more convenient than leaving bootloader unlocked after customizations... or locking and restoring backups
I'm quite sure you would have to unlock the boot loader before flashing a custom recovery, although there may be some way around it that I'm not aware of.
If you want to save your data just copy it to a desktop computer before unlocking then copy it back when you're done. Of course, without root you will have to reinstall your apps.
No need to unlock just use the Superboot - Nexus 10 root solution then use something like ROM Manager to install CWM. Worked for me so now I have a locked rooted nexus 10 with CWM.
Yeah... I just wanted to do it the old fashioned way and get dirty...
but as suspected, when trying to flash recovery image via fastboot, I get the old locked bootloader routine.
This is why the first thing to do to a Nexus is to unlock its bootloader.

Granted... There is a way to root without unlocking, but it requires dicey operations with partitions that could result in a fancy paperweight.

After installing googles 4.2.2 update through CWM, my bootloader remained lock, but i lost root and have no custom recovery. I used Mskip's root tool (which is absolutely amazing) to root it in the beginning. i'm wondering if i go through the root process again if that will be fine. its a one touch do all (unlock bootloader, root, install busybox, install recovery, etc). what i'm curious about, is if the bootloader is already unlocked, will the toolkit trying to unlock it again do anything bad?
unlocking the bootloader will not effect the phone in any way...just unlock bootloader and re root.i also did update then re rooted
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I had a feeling that would be fine, but definitely better to be safe. Thanks for confirming.

I've just got my N4 and am thinking about rooting it to allow me to install cerebus on the system partition, when a new version of android comes out would I simply be able to delete the cerebus apk and update the software? Also once the boot loader is unlocked can I re-root (in case i loose root with the update) without loosing any data?
Cheers

Unlock the boot loader before you do anything because it will wipe all of your data. Then root it. As long as you don't install a custom recovery, I believe that you can still get the ota updates.
Edit..Rooting does not wipe data.

if i remember correctly, using a custom recovery stops OTA updates
but you can always fastboot flash a new google stock image when an update is available : https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
(you have to root again afterwards)
