I am going to probably buy one today so I am not all caught up on everything nexus7 related yet, but the 32gb will be faster. There is an article on the speed difference. The specs for all are the same, but with each step up in storage the boot up time for the tablet as well as entering apps will be quicker. If I remember right it was about a 8-10 second difference in boot up between the 8 and 32gb. You will have to check this, but the 32 comes with 4.2 out of the box and thus a different (updated) su file will probably be required.
As for price, do not pay $199 for an 8gb. The price was recently lowered with the release of the 32gb. Its $199 for a new 16gb.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
Rooting is effortless. Unlock the boot loader, flash a custom recovery, then flash the root package. Plenty of guides about, can't be bothered googling it for you.
Codename for the device is "grouper" by the way.

Let me know how yours goes. I am having a hell of a time getting the drivers to work/install properly. Once that is done it should be an absolute breeze to unlock the boot loader, root, etc

Hi guys,
I'm giving my daughter my iPad Gen.1 and grabbing a Nexus 7 but just saw a report at Anandtech showing the nexus 16 considerably date then the 8gb version...
Kind of puzzled why this would be, can anyone shine a little light on why this is?
Sent from my GSII w/ICS SHOstock2
It's mentioned right in the article. The 16gb uses a faster eMMC controller. Also, this specifically affects read/write performance, not other types of performance.

Thanks for the reply AZim,
so overall we wouldn't see or feel the difference between the two? I do understand it was mentioned in the article but I'd rather hear it from you the everyday users, especially if you had the opportunity to compare then side by side... Financially I'd rather go for the 8gb version but if there is a big advantage going for the 16 other then memory space then I'd hold off until I could swing it..
Sent from my GSII w/ICS SHOstock2
I only have the 16gb, so I can't really compare them side by side, but even though I said that it only affects read/write performance, it could in theory have a cascading effect in slowing things down. For example, if you're playing an intensive game, it could take longer to load things like textures, which might require the game to slow everything else down while texture loading catches up. In practice though, it seems unlikely that you'd really notice since it even mentions in the article that the 8gb's performance is still very good, just not as good as the 16gb.
I totally agree but sering how high ranked (#1) the 16gb is listed and if the 8gb was ranked #2 I wouldn't have asked but it drops 4-5 spots which made me wonder...

Deff go for the 16gb. For 50 more dollars you will get double the memory, and all that memory will go a long way.

Its basically a ssd in your tablet/phone anyways, so i assume same rule applies.
Well bids started rolling in so off to Staples I went and all Nexus 7s were sold out and they had no idea when more will be arriving. They wanted me to pre order but with Sam's next door I figured it was worth a shot and they delivered, got me a new nexus 7 16gb and having some fun, Swype was my first install lol... funny this feels like a really big Galaxy S2
Now the big question: TO ROOT OR NOT TO ROOT
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Whether or not you decide to root, definitely unlock the bootloader first because if you unlock it, you'll have to wipe the device.

agreed, and the only reason you would ever have to lock it again would be to either give it away locked or to return it to google so you'd never have to wipe it
Root and unlock and don't look back. You won't regret it

16gb is fine for me.
My 16gb is arriving tomorrow and when my 8.9 32gb arrives on Nov 20th I will sell the 7.
The resell value for Kindle fire has been good. I sold my original Kindle fire after 7 months of use and only lost $50.
16's fine for me. I'm reluctant to order now, though, because I want to wait on wonderful devs to get Play Store and Jellybean onto this thing... then it will be golden

I ordered the 16gb version and it arrives on Friday, Sep 14. For my own purposes, 16gb should be more than enough for local storage with the rest of the content simply being streamed or saved in the cloud.
Ill probably go for the 32 but only if it can be rooted/unlocked/custom rom. My personal opinion, but I find the amazon stock is absolutely hideous. Ill wait like I did with my og fire until its confirmed either way.
32gb
I think 32 gb is accurate

Would it be smarter for me to order the nexus 4 or just get the s4? Can any of you give me some of your input on the nexus 4 since you've had yours? Are you pleased with it or do you sometimes regret your decision on getting the nexus 4? One more thing, right now I have the s3 and is no 4g really that much of a dealbreker?
Do a search as this question has been asked quite a few times....but in a nutshell if you prefer vanilla over bloatware, great dev support and the latest updates as soon they are released then get a nexus....can't really speak on the s4. Hope it helps..

Dude the S4 is so crippled and packed with 7GB of OS and mostly bloatware that you have too root it and strip down all the not needed apps and widgets. I had all the Galaxy devices but i`am gona skip the S4. The Nexus 4 is realy a breath of fresh air and 50% cheaper. I had the S3 too but wouldnt trade my N4 for one.

I tried to get one for months when it was new, settled for a gs4 since getting a 4 at the time was near impossble. I'm not sure if the 5 will be as bad. My question is, should I wait for the 5 or should I buy a local one from CL for $200? Its a 16gb model...not sure if $200 is too much.

$200 is a good price, how many other phones out there that have the same spec as the Nexus 4 that you can buy for $250 new unlocked? Switching to the N4 is a downgrade or sideway at best, because you get worse camera and no microSD storage. The positive is come in if you are some one who flash alot of custom roms or want to run latest Android version at all time.
Your S4 is a good phone, just wait till the Nexus 5 become available, if you're happy with the S4 and can install KitKat on it, you might not need to get the Nexus 5 at all.

The sd card is useless in kit Kat ..you are not allowed to write to external storage such as sd cards in kit Kat 4.4.2 So you should buy a tablet with 32gb or 64gb of internal storage without option for external storage. But LG G Pad 8.3 is also good tablet.

You do realize that there has only been one firmware update in its history? Furthermore, even if there is one, you can be certain a version with root and recovery will appear here in 24 hours that can be flashed. I am running stock and use a flashable version.

So, to summarize responses to your posts:
1. SD Cards on Kitkat will work with a simple fix.
2. Rooting does not "break things". It's really kind of the normal way to use an Android device.
3. As far as not being able to get OTA updates after rooting, that's somewhat correct, but the better way to update is not with OTA but with a prepared flashible file that comes with root.
4. Rooting is as easy as it can be. Very simple and more or less idiot-proof.

That is an accurate summary. I'll just add that for root+recovery the method that gave me no headaches was:
JB (4.2.2) - Dalingrin and then TWRP 2.6.3.2 (if you have JB, I strongly recommend doing this before going to KK, even if you plan to use stock)
KitKat (4.4.2) - IOroot 2.5 then TWRP 2.7 (a special build for KK)
