I'm working on an app that has about 15-20 questions for the user to answer. Input is handled by EditText and Spinner widgets. I've played around with a number of different XML layout designs (Linear and Table) and can't seem to both make the text input either fit or look well on the phone screen. Here's an example (made up, but similar in length) of some of the text that I'm working with:
I have a relative that has two green eyes. (the blank would be a spinner)
My shoes don't fit to tight after jumping on purple trampolines.
My dog did have flees last year.
If the query sentences are long, it's because the question is long and I can't make it any shorter.
Does any design oriented guru out there have any suggestions as to how I might look at laying this out and have it look decent? If you know of other data intensive apps that you could point me to, I'd be happy to check them out.
Thanks
Are you trying to fit everything in one window?

I'm going for one scrollable screen (scrolling vertically, not horizontally), but I'm willing to consider anything.
Have you messed around with a ScrollView? http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/ScrollView.html
What if you put a vertical linear layout inside of a scroll view, then have each child of the linear layout be whatever views you use to handle the questions?

I think it would be easier to have each question on a different screen. Have some kind of counter at the top, like "question 1 of 15", and have next & previous buttons at the bottom.

I do have my table wrapped in ScrollView, but I'm going to try the linear vertical and see how it looks. Thanks.

I didn't even think of that, which is why I started the thread. Thanks for the idea.
I'm still open to any other design suggestions anyone might have.

Good idea. You could have it so that upon answering a question the user is brought to the next question. I'm picturing the initial setup activity that opens when you first turn on an android phone
Man, I tested a demo set and the pen was SERIOUSLY off. Whatever I wrote was like a 2-3 pixels off. The only thing the staff could tell me was to send the set for repair if I ever got this issue. They quickly removed the demo set after I showed them the problem. I am pretty sure Samsung is not going to replace the WHOLE screen just for this issue, anyone discovered anything yet?
i have the same problem.
i cant write with this poor precision...
need to recalibrate the s-pen... or the screen, i dont know...
Me to... i hope there is such a thing because if i zoom in a screenshot and draw something the offset is over 3 mm for me
Have none of you realized that this is intentional as a result of left and right hand mode so that you can see the line you are drawing? its not a calibration issue at all.
maybe...
but it's stupid.
i want a perfect precision, not at 2-3mm....

As was mentioned above and in another thread all Wacom tablets/pens behave this way so that you can see what you are drawing, not just the note. It takes some getting used to but after a bit of practice it'll become second nature to you, just like the first few times you use a keyboard in your life and you have to search all over for half a minute for a single key
All that said I would like more options exposed for the pen/digitizer just like you get with a Wacom tablet such as tip feel and tilt sensitivity and calibration. Perhaps we should all send Samsung an email requesting a settings app for the pen, and/or ask Wacom if they intend to build an app for their pens for Android since they might appear on more that just Samsung devices now.
Or maybe we'll have to wait for ICS for proper pen settings. Then again someone crafty on XDA might manage it.
I use a lenovo x220T tablet PC with a wacom. On the computer, it will show a little dot wherever you are hovering over the screen. This dot makes a 1-2 mm offset easily usable. Does the galaxy note have this little dot when you are hovering over the screen? If it doesn't, that's the problem...
Maybe once the SDK is out we can create an application to make this dot visible.

Haven't seen the hovering dot for pen in apps I've tried so far
I also use a x220t and wish the calibration capability was available on the Note.
have you noticed that you can switch the screen from switching off by keeping the stylus about half a cm from the screen.. the stylus seems to have a method of interacting with the note without touching..
Guys need some help as you can see on the picture the stylus can't draw on the right screen side. On normal view. As you start on the top of the screen with a small pen size you can draw as you go down you go away from the edge of the display and it leaves a space not colored. I was on the shop I bought it the Note they have for the public has the same issue. Dunno if it is only those or all devices they offered a exchange of the device but I want again the 14 days money back guarantee. So if the issue sustains I could make my mind and replace the note or get money back.
here are some SS DONT use S memo to check it .

I dont really understand what you are trying to show us with those pics
But I can tell you when the charger is plugged in, the bottom right area of my screen (the area just below where the sms shortcut original sits) cannot detect touch. But if I unplug the charger everything becomes ok again so i didnt really bother.
Does the problem occur during charge?

it did after updating the phone to 2.3.6 but after some tries with finger i used the pen pen was working but not the finger so i did unpluged it restarted it and at end now i didn't have the problem at all
As for my problem
I pick a pic to edit with photo editor with the PEN on normal view not landscape view. I pick a small size pen when i go and try to color the right side with it, it leaves a small gap from the edge it can draw till the edge where the photo is. on top of the right side the GAP isnt there i can draw there but as i go down the gap comes and as i go down the gap comes.
added another photo and here is a link to DB so you can DL it and zoom in if u cant see the gap on this site !

The OP can't draw with his S-PEN at the right side because there's about 1mm as far I can see that it's not drawable.
Braxos from the attached screenshot above I can see the it just not drawable with the S-PEN but it shows everything else correctly, right? I mean you don't lose 1mm on everything in the right side, correct?

i found where the problem is with the calibration of the S pen or should i say with the bumbass of scripter who made the S PEN software. He didnt move the point of recognition from the S PEN but he moved the WHOLE Recognition area when you switch to Left- Right hand you can check it. When i switch to left hand i get a GAP of 2-3 MM from the left side.
As i said the Dumbass made not the pen to move lets say from 1,1 to 1.1,1.05 but insteed he MOVED the Axes X,Y on the Display position !!!!!!!!!! so i guess it is a Software problem even i am not 100% sure because at least on my phone the Right side has a ANGLE not straight aka parallel to the Edge of the phone !!!
I have a very strange problem with my pen. In all Remote Desktop programs and only in them if I touch the screen, it deletes everything.

If anyone is using the device as a drawing tablet, this would be very helpful. Let me explain why.
I downloaded the autodesk sketchbook, the application works great, but better if there is an option to completely shut off the touch input because in real life while drawing we do not want hand accidentally touch the canvas and leave any unwanted marks on the work. I know the tablet automatically disable touch input while the pen is within a certain distance, but the distance is only about 1.5 cm (too short !!). My hand always touches the screen and leaves unwanted marks while painting. Someone already suggested that wearing a glove while working, well, that's only a temporary solution. I would assume most artists would not want to paint with gloves on because it just does not feel right.
To sum it up, I would suggest an option to activate "pen only mode" while the pen is not in the pen slot would be perfect!

When the pen icon (blue, in the upper right corner) is selected it serves the same function in S-Note.
Thank you for mentioning this, but this function seems to be S-note only. It does not work in other application while it's turned on in S-note...
I think he's asking for a pen-only mode on a system level.
I think it probably has to be implemented within different programs by the developers. I did notice how effective it was within S-note, though.
otherwise my finger was randomly creating Marks and lines as I was zooming in and out.

It's something that could be implemented at the OS level if for example CyanogenMod wanted to make it a feature. That's a pretty clever idea actually and wouldn't be too hard to implement. I don't know if mainline CM would accept it but it could always be in an unofficial build.

On my N8000, the screen does not accept finger input when and as long as the S-Pen is in range of the screen (point marker enabled, point marker visible on screen)
The Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet got it implemented with an update to ICS.
Maybe Samsung can do that to ?
Someone should suggest this to Samsung some how. Maybe having a toggle in the notification bar would be handy.

That would be perfect.
I found the pen works much better when "Battery Saving" is checked in the Pen options. Before that I was having issues with it getting confused between my fingers and the pen even when the pen was docked.
Lecture notes has this feature as well. It's pretty cool! You can use your fingers for scrolling and zooming and it won't leave any marks on the paper. The pen writes and draws, and your fingers zoom and navigate. It works amazingly well. Hopefully in the future more apps will have this feature enabled.
I am on vacation so please forgive the lack of pictures to show my ideas this vacation has been rather stressy so i am back on my concept ideas and overall ideas.
First we have a design idea i've noticed the frame around my z1 is fairly strong and scratch resistant so i think it could wrap around the entire back of the phone for a single unibody construction it would also eliminate my concern displeasure that the phone is held together by glue at the back, it would also be completely airtight in the back as there would be no opening, I'd assume it would be more durable aswell.
another idea would be remaking the flaps to lock into place when closed to open you press something, or drag something or maybe magnetic locking, but maybe that wouldn't work with the rubber. I also think if possible that the phone could have a water sensor so it knows when it is submerged, where it enters a sticky keys like feature for the screen so you can use it under water so it takes hard presses to register something water wouldn't be capable of, the phone would also know when the flaps are open or closed and instantly warn if it get's in contact with water with one of them open like vibrating constantly and having an alarm with the screen flashing, it may not always save a phone but it would be useful in my opinion as you'll notice before actually submerging the entire phone if the sensor can be located around the frame but then comes the design problem, unless the sensor can be hidden allong the light stripe idea somehow, if not it could be one small sensor, perhaps the sensor could be located inside the flaps.
A special magnetic dock charger that works with all xperia devices that comes with a remote and inbuilt strong speakers with bass, aswell as a screen with multi color backlight indicating charge time music playing etc would be worth alot aswell too me, I'd pay 200 for something like that.
Lastly I have some more ui ideas they are more personal wishes though
First the notification bar as you know, fills up rather quickly with icons for each app notifying you resulting in it being completely full often, so my idea is simple, one icon with a number next too it showing how many apps that are notifying you, or simply a number.
I also want to be able to hide any notification bar icons for example i don't always need to know the reception I'd rather have that in the drop down menu i would only want it to show when there's one or two bars or simply as a warning on bad reception.
Then theres the softkeys theres alot of ideas and changes I want to make as you know the apps icon replacing the home icon on the home screen, but then theres the back and recent apps button, First off a back button in the home screen does nothing it just sits there it dosnt even turn the phone off it simply sits there filling up space, so here's a few ideas, unless Google are the only ones to be able to do such changes, or if there's a rule against such changes.
1. back button should only show when theres something to back from,* another crazy idea would be a softkey power button in the corner of the home screen replacing the back button, the most crazy idea would be getting rid of a phones power button entirely as theres tap to wake up now, only if it worked when the phone was off, honestly having a power button in the corner would not be very clean too me but it's an idea,* what would be more my preference is the turn off menu in the drop down bar.
I would also like more sony apps like compass or other useful features could call it sony smart tools or sony smart apps, Power user apps like cache cleaner ram freeing would also be great, my dad's LG g2 has a free ram app.
A silent life log app that syncs everything you do and visit in the cloud would also be fun, like using trackid to record which music you were listening to that day when you visited a national park etc, unless such a feature is too consuming.
Then theres recent apps theres two ways this could work,* my first idea was to just remove the recent apps button when there's no recent apps, it would only show when theres recent apps in it, my second idea is to hold down the apps icon to access recent apps instead of having a separate button for it, personally I want to be able to close or minimize apps so they won't end up in recent apps, when i don't want them to.
I guess i want it as clean as possible I think getting rid of an actual power button all together would be a good idea too, at least for me as it would make a phone look nicer more modern, it would also give space for something else.
I guess i want dynamic softkeys,* we have keys on a screen but they work just like physical touch buttons,* they are permanent 90 percent of the time i want to change that, as you practically get the same experience with actual capacitive buttons virtual buttons are not utilized properly in my opinion.
My other idea would be freedom in screen rotation, I use an app so I can use my phone upside down and due to the omnibalance design it feels and looks natural, not having a sony logo makes it impossible to tell if it's upside down or not, so i think all phones should have that freedom by default, I also think there should be a tablet ui for landscape on all sony phones I'd love to have the soft keys at the bottom when in landscape, i was highly dissapointed when i found out I couldn't use my z1 in landscape until I found an app for it.
I also don't think the menu should cast any shadow at all the screen should not darken it would then feel more like the menu is just icons and not a separate menu screen which is what I am aiming at uniformity, i would also get rid of the dot at the top next to the text about which order you have your icons set in, the icons are all fairly pushed in the middle I want them to use up the screen, so much space at the sides used for Nothing it gives a zoomed in feel I am referring to the z ultra though, to put it simple all menu icons simply popping up on the screen when you press the menu button no underlay of any kind not even boxes for folders just 4 small icons together to show that it's a folder
I've also noticed the soft keys and notification bar is not entirely transparent it casts a light dark shadow I would assume that's a limitation not being able to get rid of the underlay entirely due to it being hard-coded but i don't know how open android is to manufacturers, I am extremely picky about these things so I notice them pretty quickly I guess i am obsessed with perfection when it comes to technology, lastly getting rid of the blue grey ui sometimes rarely showing up like example when you change the volume, it makes me feel like that's stock android sometimes peeking out I'd like a similar ui design across all of android.
