So I got my Nexus 10 32 GB today. After installing and configuring, I discovered a dead pixel. It's not a stuck pixel (pixel stays at a specific color), but a dead one (always black).
Anyone else with that defect?
BTW, the screen is also not equally lit. It's a little bit darker at the right 30% and the top 5% of the screen (looking at the screen with the camera at the top).
I guess, I have to return it.
PS: I already tried pixel fixing apps to no avail.
OMG given the size of each pixel you must have microscope glasses... how did you find it?

Really, if there is a dead pixel is not impossible to find one. PPI is PPI. N10 is about 300ppi, lower than the n4 and galaxy nexus. If you can find a dead pixel there then you can find one on this device to. Pixels are about the same size, just over a bigger area, not more density. Sucks either way

Of course, it could also be a dust particle under the glass. Don't know if I could tell the difference.
I found it by looking after the not equally lit screen with the DisplayTester app. BTW, I guess all N10 would have that.

i got my Nexus 10 16 GB last week and also recognized some dead pixel. it's really disturbing me and i'm going to send it to Samsung on monday. Hopefully 2months later without pixel errors, i'll get it back. I'm really frustated ((
Please take a look at the picture and give me a feedback how many pixel are defect and what you would do.

Just call Google customer service and explain it to them. They will send you a new N10 upfront and then you can return yours.

How long did it take, until the light bleed decreased? I got my replacement today and although it has no dust under the glass and it is more equally lit (still has the darker band at the side of the camera), it has more light bleed than the original N10.

What do you mean with a new upfront? do i have to repair it on my own? was it difficult? the ggogle customer service said that i have to get in contact with samsung because it wasn't ordererd over my gmail addy, allthough i got the original google play documents for shipping & payment etc..
If you bought it from the Google Play store, you should not have to deal with Samsung. Google should send you a new N10 and then you send back the faulty one. That's how exchange of faulty devices works with Google.

:/ i bought it from someone who got four nexus (release /wallet/ problems) and he sold me ones with the original documents without opening it. but google said, because it wasn't ordered over my addy i have to contact samsung. that's another example how google works. i guess i should try it again...

My screen is littered with white stuck pixels. Best visible with an all black image and 100% brightness. I don't know if they were there from the start. I guess I was too excited with the HD2 to even notice them at first.
Now I have at least 7 of these stuck pixels and 2 of them are only 2mm apart.
I can't find the policy regarding dead/stuck pixels anywhere. Not on the HTC site (I live in the Netherlands, Europe) nor here on the Leo forums or even trying google.
Does anyone know the dead/stuck pixel policy HTC has in Europe?
I bought the device on december 12th.
It would also be nice to use this thread to find out if more people are having this problem with the HD2.

From what I've read in another thread, someone spoke to HTC when they had 1 dead pixel and HTC said they'd need 10 before it was a warranty issue. Personally, I think it should be an issue if there's any dead pixels, especially when the thing is only a month old!
Get in touch with them and see what they say themselves.
I'm waiting for an answer from HTC. They are not that fast..
I also read that thread, but to be honest I've never heard of so many pixels needed to be dead to be covered by warranty.
The title of that thread states only 1 dead pixel (which is normally not covered by warranty), so I thought it would be a good idea to open a new one and check out the experience of other xda users.

What (C) refers to I don't know.... the 2 conditions below are knackered pixels! Give them a ring - on laptops it was 6 or 7 accross the screen, or 3 or 4 towards the centre. I wouldn't tolerate that many on something like a phone, as you're looking at the entire screen all the time.

Again a different answer. I hope HTC replies soon.. Someone on tweakers.net told me they look at a % of dead pixels. I think I will give HTC a ring tomorrow instead of waiting for an e-mail.
Wow. I had four of these, the last one I sold still sealed in its box but the other three were perfect with regard to not having dead pixels. How unlucky! If I were you I'd return it for one of the numerous other faults, never mind their dead pixel policy. Say the SMS fault is the issue, or the crackling call quality (if you have it) etc.
Those faults are something to try indeed if they reject the pixel claim.. However the sms issue can probably be fixed with a hotfix.. Can't say anything yet about crackling call audio, didn't use it to call yet. Still playing with it and awaiting my soft resin case + screenprotector
I just noticed another white pixel.. So that is a total of 8 already.. Seems like they are all suddenly appearing (not that I'm paranoid, but I didn't notice any white stuck pixels before and I would swear there were "only" 3 yesterday morning when I first noticed..)
Ok, I gave HTC Netherlands a ring and here is what they said:
There need to be at least 4 dead/hot/stuck pixels present, OR
There need to be 2 dead/hot/stuck pixels at a maximum distance of 5mm from each other
So I brought my HD2 to back to the store I bought it from and they have sent it in for repair/exchange. I don't know if they will replace the screen or the complete handset, but I pushed them quite a bit to replace the entire handset (it's only a month old and I don't like the idea of it being taken apart already :S) I'll keep you all informed.

Thank you! I hope so too! Good thing is that they (the store) also filled "in perfect condition" in on the RMA form. Sent back a Nokia once and it came back all scratched up and I couldn't fall back on anything to prove it wasn't scratched when I sent it in.

I have a UK Tmobile HD2 Ive only had it 2 weeks and had noticed a white pixel appear a couple of days ago and now I have spotted 2 more (bottom left, middle and top right of the screen) and I can also just about see 3 not very visible RED stuck pixels.
I will be taking the handset back in to the store tomorrow to see what they plan to do about it, they will probably send it off for repair but i will ask for an exchange although the store does not have any instock.
my HD2 suffers from a dead pixel too.
Luckily it's only 1 (and i hope it won't get any more).
I have my HD2 a week, and yesterday i first noticed the dead pixel with brightness on 100% and a white background.
Hope they do something about your situation, because that many dead/hot/stuck pixels isn't fun anymore, and the worst part is you can't hold your eyes of it once you noticed them.
Is there a software to fix stuck pixels??? I have spotted a red point which can be seen only in some applications with black background. But it isn't seen in a totally black picture.

Are dead pixels black or white? I have few in a small area after I bought it used a year ago. They haven't spread but does anyone else have this problem?

I have received Google Nexus 10 and it seems like the seal was broken, which suggests that somebody else has already used it (or at least unpacked).
I guess that the only known "big issue" is the light bleed. Could somebody tell me, step by step, how to determine it? (e.g. how to load all black screen? What brightness should I use to check it?). I am trying to judge whether to keep the tablet or not.

Try using an app like this LCD test:

go to the pure black and then play around with the brightness (set it to max).
You'll almost certainly going to see some but this should help you decide if it's a deal breaker for you.
the darker the room the better aswell! if you are in a pitch dark room and only see little light bleed at max brightness then have a little smile to yourself and enjoy the nexus!

I know the OP's question is on testing for bleed, but want to respond to help those wondering whether what they're seeing in their tests is normal or a defect that a replacement unit might solve . . .
Starting with a couple of suggested definitions:
'Light bleed' is a significant unevenness in screen lighting/brightness that's irritating in normal use – like scalloping along the edges, or being a lot brighter or darker on one side. Separately, let's call it 'black glow' when what's intended to be jet black on a screen doesn't appear completely black.
If you search the Web for 'light bleed' and the name of any major tablet, you'll find plenty of references to this. When examining your tablet, for context do the same with your laptop, LCD monitor, and LCD TV, for all are subject to the same concerns. No screen technology is perfect. Lighting on all LCD screens varies somewhat depending on the angle you look at it, and some level of 'black glow' is normal too.
Looking at your all-black screen in a dark room with the brightness turned up can be a useful test to verify problems if you find concerns that affect normal usage. This is a worst-case-scenario video test, and when you test your other LCD-screen devices this way, you are bound to see 'black glow'.
A lot of cell phones (mostly Samsung) have AMOLED screens that don't need screen backlighting & thus don't have 'black glow' – each pixel is a light and blacks can truly be black. But these screens are limited to smaller devices – the largest are two lower-resolution 7.7" units; you can't buy a 10" AMOLED tablet. With LCD's, note that the larger the screen & the higher the resolution, the brighter the backlight (really, it's on the edge) needs to be.
There are definitely defective units out there, and some that aren't as even as others. Hopefully this adds context to the discussion and will help folks new to the issue decide whether their unit is bad enough to be worth exchanging . . .

Mine is faintly noticeable all the time with auto brightness on. I asked for an RMA and it was 2-3 times as bad. I think I will keep this one. As of now looking at it really bothers me, but I know in a few months once this device has some wear it won't matter to me. However I am still debating on attempting to receive a refund and possibly buying it in the stores in a few months. Hmmm lol.

my orignal device has servere light bleed on the left corner and my replacement device has servere light bleed on the right corner... 3rd one is on the way, please Google, give me a acceptable screen before the world ends!!
I do not think there is any point of returning it. It seems liek light bleed is inherent in the design of these tablets. I have two right in front of me, the second one has even worse light bleed. I shall be keeping the first one. Does any one know if they will charge my card for the second one. It seems like they charged me card, then a days before I got a second nexus 10, they removed the charged.
I was expecting a courier to pick up my old nexus 10. But no one has. Any one else in the same situation with 2 nexus 10s?

They will place another hold of the price of the device until the rma'd unit has returned to them. It would take another 7 days until the hold is released from what was explained to me. So at the moment for me they have 1k of my money on hold because the original is in route to them now and I had just ordered the replacement for the replacement!
You will have to setup a pickup or go to the nearest UPS facility to return your defective unit.

Yes, I was thinking that. But they do not have any of my money on hold. They did but then it was returned back?! Keep checking my account. I thought they were going to organise the collection of my old devise. Seems like i shall give them a ring. They may charge my card again!
So... what do you think about my case (see photos in the previous post)? How does it compare to the "average Nexus 10" you have/have seen? Is it "ok" or "one of the worst cases" or... ?
I am not sure if it is not worth waiting 2-3 weeks for a new tablet, as opposed to holding onto a defective one for a few years...

Your one looks bad!
@OP: It seems the question should be whether your screen looks great to you in normal use or not. If lighting evenness irritates under normal use, *then* the dark room/full-black screen test can confirm what you're seeing. Is only time you see a funny pattern when testing the thing this way?
We can't really know if a picture taken with a typical camera in a dark room really reflects how you see the image; most cameras normally crank the gain up 'till there's some kind of funny colored image. My screen is a bit brighter in the lower right when running this test -- which I see as nothing more than an interesting detail about how the backlighting works, it's completely irrelevant to me in normal use. If your picture really does reflect what you experience, and it affects normal usage . . . yep, it's worse than mine.
The easiest way you can get context for what you're seeing is probably to run the same test on any laptop or tablet you can get ahold of -- makes sense that you don't want your tablet to come up short when compared to what you see first-hand on other LCD screens. That's probably a lot better way to decide!
This is not about the tiny silver dots you can see in certain angles when there is glare on the screen. I sold my 8gb Nexus 4 and bought a 16Gb but the new phone that just arrived has a bunch of vertical lines with 3 small horizontal lines which I assume is the digitizer and it is a self capacitance circuit. The problem is that it is visible ALL the time, from every angle even in dark rooms and while the screen is on. My old 8Gb did not have this problem (just the silver dots), is this enough for an RMA? I'm trying to get used to it but it is really distracting. Here are some pictures:

Yeah, I'm going to call google and see what they say. Sucks though, the screen had great colors, FAST binned, and running stock got me a score of 19k in Antutu.
I can see that on mine too, it's the LCD matrix. Was similar on my One X as well before I sold it. Doesn't bother me one bit

I can see it if its a dark sceen, like if I pull down the notifications bar. What kills me is that my old rev10 Nexus 4 doesn't have that.
I emailed Google the picures of the screen and they said that it was defective and setup an RMA. Just wanted to post the result in case anybody has something similar. Thanks everybody.

The replacement hasn't shipped yet, will let you know when I get it but this is most certainly a defective screen, the two phones side by side in the first post are both rev11 301k and both arrived about a week apart in february. One has the digitizer marks that are barely visible, only from certain angles(doesnt even show up in the pictures) and when the screen is off, the other one I can see them from 4 feet away. I have to agree on the colors though, the 301k has much better colors compared to my old 211k.

Replacement just arrived, the digitizer is MUCH less visible. See pic attached.
Just to clarify, it's a stuck pixel not a dead pixel. My bad...
Well you should have checked if you are buying it second handed. Probably seller sold it because of that instead of asking for a change.
He said the phone was sold sealed, so the seller couldn't know there were dead pixels on the screen.

As I said in the initial post, the phone was sealed. Unless the seller was psychic it is impossible that he could have known.

Mine had a dead pixel but I got it replaced today.
Only noticed second day, its quite hard to spot it. But yes it's anoying.
Just to reiterate, I love this phone, which is why I'm more gutted than I would have been that some dead pixels have slipped though the production line as I really didn't want to have to send the phone off. I just wondered if anyone else has found any dead pixels a or if I'm just Mr Unlucky as I seem to have had a run of bad luck with HTC over the past few years.

Only problem is I only have a repair option as I didn't buy it myself and don't have a store receipt. If I did I'd just swap like you. If It were not for this annoyance I would be 100% in love with this phone!
I don't believe HTC are stating the phone to have a zero defect pixel display. The more pixels you push into such a small display the more chance of having defective pixels. Stuck pixels are worse than dead ones as they blink at you on a black background. Dead pixels you normally have to search for.
Believe me I would be just as upset as anyone if I found bad pixels on mine (fortunately not yet)....but I think its asking a bit much for perfection on every display out of the factory considering the pixel density and resolution.
That sucks man. Unfortunately for you that you only have those two options.
I would be so mad if that happened to me, but I generally buy from a store or online and get replacements easy.

I'm absolutely devastated as I thought this phone was perfect up to this point. I bought the phone second hand (albeit sealed) so don't have the option of an exchange. My options, therefore, are live with it or send it off to HTC and be phoneless for days or weeks.
I wouldn't have thought dead pixels would be noticeable on a screen with such a dense resolution, and they're not really noticeable on anything other than black - but they're REALLY noticeable there.
Have any of you guys got dead pixels? I'm a bit disappointed to be honest as I've had a tonne of iPhones and Samsung devices over the past few years and haven't seen a single dead pixel but with this and my One X from last year I've had two in a row with HTC.

Dead pixel = Black
Stuck Pixel = Any other colour
You can't fix black (dead) pixels as they are broken. Stuck however sometimes can be unstuck and fixed, but again can get stuck once again. Its pointless asking for pictures as it would just be a tiny spec on the screen. Visible only if you zoom like 200%. Mine was on the top left quarter and was a dead pixel, so I got it exchanged the next day in store at phones4u.
I wouldn't bother, software never works 99.999% of the time, if ever.
The pixels are to small on the HTC One that if you can see them, then it'll be a small cluster and I doubt the dead pixel policy has changed so you probably can get a replacement.
I've seen a lot of these HTC Ones with dead/stuck pixels online, every picture I see of them has them and even the one at the shop has one too.
Hold on one second....since when can you get the HTC one? I didn't think it came out until next week at the earliest outside the USA

Not exactly. I had ONE dead black pixel and i could see it nice and clear on a white screen. Thats every time I was browsing I'd notice a dust like spec. Its not hard to see especially when you put it on specific colours. Again I had only one dead pixel not a cluster.
See the words I highlighted.... Doesn't seem to be a dead pixel to me. If that's really the case just ignore it. It will just fix itself in some time or just massage the part of the screen or use some pixel fixer on google play.

if you have one dead pixel, i say keep it. HTC has ALWAYS had problems with dead pixels. i went through 8 G2s (Desire Z) and only had one or two without dead pixels. one even had a display that looked like it suffered from burn in.

Why the hell would you keep it? Stupidest advice ever.
My first HTC One had ONE dead pixel. I exchanged it and got a brand new shiny one WITHOUT any dead pixels. So you're telling me I should've kept the faulty one and lived with it? lmfao..
HTC One is already available on hongkong? Cool...
If it is I could just cancel my pre-order with handtec, travel there and buy the HTC One. In the end I could save alot with customs & stuff.

Yeah, why not exchange it? I can accept one or two dead dark pixel but not bright one.
Got my first S7E, realized both the main speaker and headset speaker were very crackly. Did a swap and the new phone was great. On day 14 (luckily at least) a single dead pixel developed in the center of the screen. It appears on green, white, and grey backgrounds and is green in color. Not having great luck with this device.....
Anyone else experiencing dead pixels? I tried an app on the playstore which rotted colors for like 8 hours but still no change. Not sure if just need to swap it out again.

Thanks. While that isnt the exact app I used it did the same thing more or less. Left it on for 8 hours and no change. THink I should run it longer? Also this may be dumb but is it possible the recent Samsung patches (which I know help with the touch sensitivity) might improve anything? I disabled the update app via Package Disabler for future rooting potential
I don't know if this would work if you use it for a longer period. Duo you have something to loose?
I don't think the April update will fix your problem.

How would one notice a dead pixel at 534 PPI? I'm genuinely asking since I would like to see how noticeable that is. Would it be possible for you to take a photo of the screen and try to catch that dead/stuck pixel?
For me it would be a pain in the... Staring at a bright screen and one pixel stays black...

That's WAY too big to be a single pixel. The screen has 534 pixels per inch, and that "thing" is very big, so I think you have a cluster of dead or stuck pixels here, and I would get a new one ASAP if you still have the chance.

Thanks all. I called ATT and plan to exchange again. They hadnt received my first RMA back (with the bad speaker) so once they receive it they can ship out the new replacement. Hopefully third time is a charm lol
