How long is battery supposed to last? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my nexus 7 on saturday as soon as I did I turned it on. There was an update available to android 4.2
Since it was a clean install I have not experienced any of the horrible software bugs I read here. Battery on the other hand is sort of dramatic. I will admit I use it a lot, but, come on! My Nexus S has better battery than this guy performs.
While I was at work, it was charging. I came home, it was 100% charged, so as soon as I ate, and stuff I started playing with it.
I played Sonic THD version, listened to a few songs on YouTube and now I am reading a book, and I notice the battery is down to 41%. This is like, horrible battery, because I used it for Sonic, YT (only in low quality, not HD) and book lasted together like an hour and a half. Tegra may have wasted some battery on Sonic, but 60% drop for less than 2 hours is bad, mmkay?
Is this normal? 4.2 having battery bugs?
Other thing is, again, not sure if 4.2 or...
When my battery is bellow 27% or so, multi touch starts acting up. Not detecting all the touches, detecting 2 instead of 1, flashing between 2 touches... When charging and above 30% it is fantastic, no problems at all. Besides that, loving every bit of this beast!!
Sent from my Nexus 7

I reckon 4.2 may be contributing to those same bugs you felt you had avoided. There's an issue with battery use and charging that is slowly coming out of people. For example, my n7 charged overnight and when I came to unplug it was at 76%. Not a previous behaviour on any 4.1 version.

Completely inaccurate. I did a standby test with wifi on for 8 hours and it didn't even drop 1%. If sales are weak, it is more likely due to price.
This article really upset me! How can this guy make such assumptions w/o citing any sources!??! It's probably taken from the Apple shareholder meeting minutes...
the guy hes sourcing has been completely inaccurate in the past. i would take this article with a grain of salt.
I've definitely had numerous random app crashes but i expected this from a baby OS. I've had no such problems with battery life though...
so far battery life has been excellent
I unplugged Friday morning and didn't have to charge it until Monday night.
I viewed my screen on time and it was at just under 9 hours of screen on.
He's entirely accurate- the 2nd day I got it, my life was on standby for 10 hours while I used it (and still had battery left!)
WOW so should we all post screen shots of the over 24 hours of life we get out of this?
Lol..my Xoom gets the best battery life out of any tablet I've had so far. This coming from a ipod touch 4th gen..a Archos 70 & a dell streak 7.The Xoom's battery life is incredible.

Honestly...I've had mine off the charger for 2 days, 5 hrs, 34 mins., and it's at 34% battery. I will never complain about performance like that.
I'm having issues with the battery life on my Xoom and can't figure out what's doing it...
I can take it off the charger in the morning, use it for 10 minutes then put in standby and when I get home after work it can be down as far as 50%.
I've disabled cell data, put in airplane mode, disable wifi, checked app sync settings (disabled push for exchange just in case).
Nothing seems to help
This is funny.
I had my Xoom on a battery for 4 Days and like 17 hours without charging it. And it was only at 30%! Now, it only had minimal use, of course. I didn't play with it all that much until I received my screen protector. All data services were disabled. WiFi on. So, that's still amazing to have almost 5 days without a charge if you're not using it.
The battery life on the Xoom is excellent!
Did anyone else get annoyed by the insane amount of quotation marks in the article? He might as well have just linked to the source he was pulling all of that fodder from. Plus he didn't conduct his own tests.
Next...
My Xoom matches my old iPad 1, about 10 hours of straight use (reading Kindle books with Wifi/3G on and push Exchange email) or days with mixed use and standby.
I'm running on 1 day 16 hours and I'm still at 40%.
dont listen to that article...the battery life is (in use case scenario) as good as my iPad...
meaning, I don't have to worry about it on a daily basis like my iPad. I think the iPad may get one more hour of vid playback, but the difference between 9 and 10 hours is not huge really.
I went on a ski trip recently and did not bring my xoom...went from Friday morning and plugged it in Sunday at midnight and the Xoom still had 30% left. I did a lot of music playing, web browsing, some gaming, etc.
Standby is definitely longer than 10-12 hours without a doubt.

Please complain. Tiernan Ray is an idiot for quoting an even bigger idiot.
Hello,
new to posting here! To be honest I didnt read that first post as mine seems to last ok, but thats where I wanted some help. Since I got mine this Sunday, when I have it fully charged or not, my battery seems to go down about 10% or so during the night when I sleep. Thats about 8 hours I leave it unplugged. Is that to be considered normal? I am just coming off the ipad so 10% feels a little bit more then I'm used too.
I leave wifi on all the time, but no bluetooth, no location services or whatnot, I do leave on that background sync though, would that really drain me that much though during non usage time?
Again, not major but I would like my battery to last as long as possible =]
Thank you for your help in advance!
BTW, love this Xoom!
I put up a good comment at that site. What a douche that guy is. I think that article should be taken down for retarded opinions/claims. I know they said everyone has a right to an opinion, but... this isn't an opinion it's a complete BS claim to try and make people look at the iPad. Hehe.. sorry to burst your bubble there guy, but... us Android users already know the truth about how awesome we are.

SGN 10.1 battery endurance is phenomenal !

Yesterday we had a day grey in grey and I started my morning as usual with my SGN 10.1
Emailing, Newspaper reading, some drafting for my next lectures, updating apps and then I found some really funny cabaret streams .......
Well, my Note was constantly on and streaming YouTube and some other sources
What shall I tell You: just in time I went to bed it was down to 5%
14 hrs !
No other tab can beat THAT
I found a quick way of gaining 5 hours battery per day: I bought my 5 yr old son a Galaxy Tab 2 (early xmas present). Now my note 10.1 lasts me all day, every day It even works with my phone, a Note 2
My note 10.1 has so far been running for 23 hours and 10 minutes and has 26% battery remaining. It's definitely on a par with my previous tablet, an ipad 3 :good:
Last week, took mine off the charger Sunday morning and didn't put it back till Friday night. I didn't use it much, just about 4 hours of screen time. Total time on battery was 134 hours 27 minutes. Still had 55% of the battery left. That standby time if phenomenal.
yeah my last charge was 5 hours 40 mins screen on time and more than 13 days standby. Battery was at 34%. It uses next to no power on standby, absolutely amazing.

I agree. I'm coming from Asus Transformer Infinity and SGN 10.1's battery is beyond belief. It seems like it's running on nuclear energy. Amazing for such a light tablet.

guys why my screen always say it uses 75/80% when i look at battery usage ?
it makes my battery drain very fast
The amount of time your screen is on is the usage percentage shown eg if you tablet is on for 10 hours and out of that u were using it for 8 hours then the percentage would be 80
Screen is the biggest battery eater which is the case with any device so it effects your battery life the most

I got mine yesterday and charged it, hardly did anything with it except download and play a game for less than 10 minutes and have a little doodle with sketchbook pro then left it on standby over night then did a little browsing this morning.
Found the wifi to be slow and sluggish and wouldn't even show all images even though my broadband is 100mb speed.
The battery lasted 13 hours, don't know how long it would last if I'd actually used it a bit more cause it seemed to go down pretty fast even on wifi bout the same life as my s3.
Hardly call that phenomenal.
I'm really disappointed to be honest after reading all the reviews.

Probably just needed a full charge as I only charged it from half way as it came half charged and if that doesn't work I'll do a full discharge and if that doesn't work I'll send it back
Full brightness is too high for me and auto is too low so had it at less than half way.
Only really got it so could use it to take out with me and do some paintings but was worried about it switching off that's why not happy.
Thanks for your reply, really like this tablet and it really is what I thought it would be but if it hasn't got the battery then it's not good.
I'll see how it goes.

Make sure you set WiFi to turn off when the screen is off.
Odd though that the WiFi was slow. It makes me think something is wrong with the WiFi itself that's causing problems.

Personally, I've noticed that the s-pen digitiser, when it is switched on, drains a considerable amount of energy. So do not expect extreme battery life if you use a lot the s-pen. Anyway, do check that the energy saving option under "Options - S Pen" is ticked. This way the digitiser will be off when the stylus is in its receptacle. This will save a good amount of battery when you're not using the pen (provided you insert it in its receptacle). Of course, this setting will have no effect whatsoever while you're using the pen.
In any case, a tablet like this is full of features and components that are potential battery killers, so how long the battery lasts, it's really up to how the owner uses it, and not only how much. For instance, I may be surfing the internet and checking emails all day long without using the pen, and consider it heavy use. How long will the battery last in such case? 15 hours? Ok.
Now, a seemingly opposite case could be this: I may have the tablet constantly standing by, but with the pen off its receptacle. Since I have never used the tablet, I have full right to swear that my usage of the tablet is extremely light. Well, only because I've left the pen out of its receptacle, my battery will run flat in just about 13 hours or so. And what's more confusing, is that if I go checking the battery stats, I will see no trace of the pen being the responsible for such a high drain, so I probably will end up getting the (wrong) idea that the battery life of this tablet is extremely poor.
Another case, among the many, is when the tablet tries to sync using the 3G connection, but gets no answer from the network because of problems of the mobile operator network (server not responding). This causes the 3G radio to remain constantly on and drain the battery very fast. Again, it is very difficult to understand the reason for such a quick discharge. Such an issue happens in certain areas of my city with Vodafone, for instance. When I go to that areas, I have to take care to switch off 3G data connection, or else my battery will be empty in a matter of a few hours.
IMHO the problem is, that android os is very incomplete when it comes to providing information for analysing power consumption, and this has always been the cause of big confusion and frustration.

Nexus 4 Average Battery Life - How many hours you get out of your phone?
So far getting 13 hours with medium brightness.
Its not the total on time that really counts, it is the screen on time. And go to the great battery impression thread in the general forum!
Just finished getting 1d11hrs from it... I had run it down to 1% and fully meant to take screenshots when the phone shut down on me I had done "average" use as I use a phone... watched a little bit of an hd movie, facebook, a few calls, playing on google play and other stuff.
I'm coming from a Samsung Infuse and this is about on par with the battery life I was getting from that running CM10 unofficial on it when the ROM didn't have drain problems affecting it.
I don't know if this isn't typical of others' experience with the N4... I was cautious and plugged my baby in when I got it before even turning it on and let it charge up. It did have to do some calibration as with power off it thought it was at 100% but when it booted up, it registered 80% charge. Now after a few full drain/charge cycles it seems to have a very good feeling for 100% and 0%.

Total battery time it differs but my screen time on average is around 4hrs.
Very low brightness, wifi always on.
I only use a few apps like sms, tweet lanes, instagram, flipboard, and espn.
I get 9 by barely using it. This phone has a serious problem. It's obvious because the Optimus G is a battery boss, and it even has LTE.
This phone had the exact same screen, internals, battery.

That's where you know it is software related. 4.2 has some bugs, the galaxy nexus got updated to 4.2 and people are reporting really bad battery life ever since the update. Also JB in general doesn't perform as good as ICS in the battery department cause of project butter that cranks the CPU up soon as you start using the phone. Example is Galaxy s 3.
Personally i get very good battery life and in very satisfied. When i was on stock my battery started really bad but then improved, now that I'm rooted and running a custom ROM and kernel i have very satisfying battery life.

Nexus 4 Battery Life

Hey Guys,
A bunch of people are complaining about the battery life on Nexus 4. I've been waited for a couple days since I got the device, to have enough confident about the battery before I make any post here. Yes, the phone battery drain pretty fast on the first few cycles. After a bunch more charges later, let me tell this, the battery life did get significantly better. It lasted about 10-15 hr depends on the load of the usage.
Here is my typical day, off the charge at 100% in the morning, listen to a few songs, checking emails, and messages while getting ready for school. About an 30mn to 1hr of internet browser and youtube videos while on the bus. By 1-2pm the battery drop the about 70-80%. I put the phone in silent mood til i'm done with all my classes. On the way back home on the bus, I listened to a bunch of music, web browsing, maybe a few phone calls, texts or games.
Compare to my old phone, Samsung Galaxy S2 T989, im impressed with the Nexus 4 battery life. My Galaxy S2 battery always die on the bus coming back home. What I'm trying to get at: if you're a light to medium user like me, then get this phone. I was hesitate at first because I always have bad experience with android battery life. But Google seem to get its OS right with this nexus device, mainly because the battery drain minimum while in sleeping mood.
Can you post your Nexus 4 battery performance screenshot if you have been using the phone for more than a few days ?
Is there supposed to be a question being asked? Or a statement as this is in the Q&A forum.
I agree with you on many points. People need to wait at least 5 to 7 days for the battery charge to fully kick in. The first days mean absolutely nothing as it is still being aligned plus the user is still installing apps and setting up their phone.
There are some notable problems in the default kernel that uses more battery Usage than normal too.

From full battery to this overnight + breakfast usage. Rasbean + Matr1x v3.0. Never seen anything like it. Coming from the GN, this phone is a different dimension altogether. On any aspect..
Had phone for 5 days. Drained phone to 10% then fully charged. Moderate to light use made it through a day.

Depends on how much screen time you got, which you didn't show us.
The trick is to be careful about using mobile data when signal is bad, I switch to WiFi when home to avoid unnecessary battery drain.

What is this obsession for battery life, it lasts me well through the day with moderate/heavy use. I charge it at night (if needed) and unless you are homeleless this shouldn`t be a problem. It`s a great phone and i enjoy using it.

I thought the same until my N4 actually arrived, it seems battery life is abysmal compared to my Optimus 2x which didnt have anything really spectacular in regards to battery size. On my O2x I could get 1.5 - 2.5 days depending on use, hitting atleast 1 .5 which was good and acceptable for me (I can charge at night anyways) however my N4 doesnt even reach 13 hours on similar usage!.
I am quite a light users of smartphones however I do like to have a power phone when it comes to using it on the basis of smoothness and capabilities if I need to say do work on my phone, I rarely play games though. Main usage is 2 email accounts on poll 1 hour steps, a third account that is an exchange server and polls in 30 minute steps and thats about it with some brief browsing and a handful of texts (been a quite time since I got my N4), this is less usage than my O2x and yet it still performs alot worse!
I was hoping of staying with stock as I was expecting it to finally be good, comparing it to LG stock attempts it is but battery life isnt . I will be trying the combo Vangelis13 mentioned, raspbean and matr1x kernel as that seems like a great mix however Parandroid has been on the table and it seems like alot of being are getting good results so I will try it soon .
If I can get more than a day of usage I would be really happy, if I was playing games or doing really heavy tasks I wouldnt expect it to last but right now it is doing pretty much nothing and dieing far to fast!.
One thing I've noticed since coming to N4 from S2 is that phone calls drain battery much more significantly on the N4. I could make an hour long call on my S2 and it would use no more than a couple of percent battery but the N4 used 15% for an hour long phone call the other night.
If I didn't own a nexus 4 and came to this thread to find out about it's battery life I would expect it to be good.
Point is you guys are misinforming everyone. The battery is mediocre and that's it.
It won't last a full day if you use it constantly and I do need two charges / day many times.
Let me put it this way, you will only get roughly 3 hours of screen time on stock everything. If that is good for you then it's will have good battery life, if not then you will say it's got poor battery life.

you are perfectly right.
I come from an iPhone 4s, which I changed because the battery life wasn´t that great and I thought it was time to try something new.
Got the N4 last friday and played around with it during the weekend.
Monday, tuesday and wednesday this week... none of these days I´ve been able to come back home with the phone still on.
I wake up at 7.30am and I usually am back home at 6pm.
In my opinion, and honestly should be in everyone´s opinion, 10 hours of battery life are unacceptable, whatever the usage is (considering that 7.30 of those 10 hours I was at work)
I have till friday this week to return it, which is a pity because the phone is great
i get 5-6 hours sot..
rom is omnirom 5.1.1 hellscore kernel b73.
100mv undervoltage hellsactive governer.
think 7 would be possible if google services would not take a quarter of the battery.
the screen is not taking that much battery as one would think.
think most issues with battery life come from fake original battery replacements.
had 3-4 sot using "original" battery. but after replacing with real genuine from official lg spare parts shop 5-6...

This phone is amazing!

Holy moly, I didn't even know what to expect.
Today I had kept the phone overnight at 80% and when I woke up the battery was at 77% (3% overnight without charge!). So I charged it quickly to 100% and at around 9am, I took the phone out of charge and started my day. With both Wifi and Bluetooth on, listening to music and taking calls/a bit of googling, I come home at 8pm to a phone that has 94% battery. This battery life is crazy, I am shocked at how a phone at such a low price (compared to other phones) has so much fight in it!
My nexus 5x would drain to 40% within this time frame from 100% without me even touching it! This phone is just so darn good, everything I have used so far works quite well. Bluetooth for me works fine on the SBC codec.
Now my experience may not be the same as others (I see different people have their own problems). But coming from a phone like the 5x, I didn't know what to expect. I thought the battery life would be a bit longer than the 5x, but I never expected it to be this long! I don't even have to charge the phone overnight anymore, I can literally use it for 2-4 days before the battery probs goes down to possibly 30%. I'm going to keep it off charge until it hits 20%, I want to see how long this bad boy lasts! This is also without root or custom kernals, no modifications were done to this phone whatsoever(for now ).
well, the screen is only 1080 whereas high end devices are 2k or even 4k
