Poll: Wifi only N7.. Keep wifi on during sleep? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With your wifi only N7, how have you configured the "wifi on during sleep" setting?
Personally i chose never because i rely on my phone for notifications and my N7 stays at home at all times, so no need for wifi to be on all day.

I'm set to always, as I often leave things downloading while I do other things.
Sorry, can't see the poll via tapatalk

I'm also an always on'er. Battery life is good enough that I don't find any issues with it.

I set it to never. Phone for notifications etc. If the n7 is around just pick it up and use it.

I had tried the never rule so that it would switch off during sleep but it seemed to stay awake. But now i use automate it app to switch WiFi off when the screen goes off, with a 5 min delay, its also set to come back on when three screen is switched on again, works perfectly.

Saving battery when not in use?

So I have a Nexus 7 and an S3, the former becoming recently rather redundant as I got the new iPad (was tired of lack of optimised tablet apps). I still, however, love the form factor when reading and this I do relatively frequently, maybe 3-4 times a week.
The form factor is also useful when I just want to pop out for a bit and feel like taking it with me, whereas the static iPad I tend to keep either at home or take to university with me.
The only issue is due to me using the nexus less, i am less aware of how much charge it holds. And the standby battery is terrible compared to the iPad, which I can honestly say would last about a month if I wasn't using it.
Is there anything I can do to my tablet to maybe tone down the CPU when not in use or maybe disable internet connection when not in use, as I'm sure these two things may be affecting the battery when it shouldn't.
I don't need my tablet to constantly be up to date the second I turn it on I wouldn't mind if it took a minute or so to show me new updates / emails e.t.c.
Thanks!
Keep WiFi and sync off. I don't keep WiFi or sync on (my g'nex keeps me up to date) and my standby battery is good. Never left it sitting for a full day but over 12 hours I only lose 2-3%.

used power toggles to turn sync off, but out of curiosity where is the normal menu option for it?
cheers for that, 5% a day is absolutely fine!
They made this one hard to find. Settings > Data usage > Menu options (3 vertical dots in upper right) > Auto-sync data (put check mark). It's really a pain. I use Notification Toggle to have an option to toggle it from my notifications pull-down shade.
just turn it off if your not using it or set your tablet to sleep mode
If your device is rooted use set CPU and use profiles so you can make you processor only do like 50mhz when the device is on sleep

I wouldn't be using any of these battery saving apps as most cause more battery drainage than they save.
BetterBatteryStats is the only app you need, free on XDA but support the developer by buying it on Google Play it really is a great app for the small price, and will identify the main battery hogs without using hardly any itself

Nexus 4 turning on by itself?

So i notice a problem, sometimes i don't know why how my phone got turned on, and it stays on without going back to sleep or anything. It literally drains my battery from a full charge to 50% in less than 4 hours. I dont know whats causing it, but initially i thought it could be the GO SMS because i allowed it to turn on whenever i got a msg, ( really like iphone that pop msgs) but i dont think its the case cause my phone to turn on.
Check your display settings. You might have set the screen time to more than xx seconds/minutes.

Are you running a custom ROM or kernel?

[Q] apps don't run in the background

I don't seem to be getting notifications from apps except a few like Gmail, cloud SMS & play store. I don't get from fb, fb chat, XDA etc. It seems like they don't really run in the background. It especially clear in games that they shut down as I leave them.
Don't have any of these problems on my Galaxy Nexus 4.2.2.

Are you enabling notifications within those particular apps? And do you leave games with the home or back button?
Many games will have to do some reloading if you switch away from them.

They all have notifications activated and I always use the home button. Sometimes I actually do get the notifications but it's like half an hour later then my gnex where it's instantly.

Is this when the screen is off? If so, do you have WiFi set to never sleep when screen is off?

Same here, my Nexus 7 almost NEVER gives me Notifications, and if it does its as you say like 30mins/1hour late, so by that time I've already seen what its notifying me of.
Very annoying !!
WiFi is one when screen is off.
Can't reproduce the problem on my gnex, it's just weird...

[Q] Use n7 as home phone

I plan on using my n7 as my home phone, i will also attach a speaker to it so that it is loud enough to be heard throughout my home.
I have a question to anyone that uses their n7 heavily throughout the day, have u run into any issues by leaving your n7 powered on for more than 6-8 hours? like i said i plan on using it as my home phone, and it will be powered on for a long period of time and, it will mostly be on stand by. screen off with wifi on and talkatone in the background awaiting any important phone calls.
any positive inputs would be appreciated
I leave my n7 on all the time with the Wi-Fi and GPS radios always on and have hardly any issues.
If l realize that I have not rebooted it in several days, I'll reboot it - though I honestly don't remember ever needing to reboot it other than when messing with the recovery, or installing a kernel.
While it's setting there with the screen off with Wi-Fi and GPS on it seems to only use 1 to maybe 2 percent of the battery per hour.

Cache Update Service not letting phone deep sleep

It is a Google service and I have disabled location services and Google Now. Does not seem to make a difference. I have looked everywhere and have come up with nothing. I have the phone set up basically the same apps as my N4 and my Nexus is crushing my G2 in battery life. Any ideas would be great on what is causing this.

I am using better battery stats and it is partial wake lock I guess I did not bother looking at the overall usage. I am trying a few more things and will report back later.

add me to the list of people this is driving nutzo.
Question, when you go to google sync under settings/accounts and sync, does it show that 'sync is not available at this time?'
I wonder if that could be causing it?
I am waiting for my case to make it my daily driver but last night I tinkered and went and set up all my Google apps and changed my Google plus photo to only upload on charger. When I turned it off it was deep sleeping and and that wake lock was no where to be found. If anyone wants to try this and see if it helps.
