Media server totally drained the life juice out of my battery along with maps.... I haven't used maps at all, still it ate my battery even though there was a minimal screen time... screenshots below.... Advice for future????

Open navigation app and complete first time setup. That should fix maps battery usage. Need more info about media server. Download better battery stats from market and monitor from there.

Mediaserver probably refers to music. Do you have music through Google Play? If so, it may be attempting to download your music collection. Go to Settings > Accounts and uncheck the sync option for music.
I have the same issue with media server, it was okay before root.
But after I unlocked the bootloader and rooted, I get the same battery drain from media server.
Don't know if it's related.
Maps: check if you are not signed in Latitude - that is real battery eater
Media server: listening to music but could be also scanning storage for media files (after reboot), could be that that process just got stucked and was eating your battery in the backgroud. Rebooting should solve that.

I don't play music, went to gallery for no more than 3 times, media server still ate 9% of total 57% discharge

media server uses a lot of battery when you record videos, also watching hd videos in sw mode for long time drains battery fast.
I had a media server drain issue on another phone. The issue for me was videos on my phone that were large / encoded in a way Android choked on.
I get Media Server draining my batter on my Nexus S sometimes after playing a game (Ninja Fishing especially). It doesn't close properly and if I listen close to the speaker I'll hear "tk tk tk tk tk tk" looping. When I Force Close Ninja Fishing, it fixes it. IOW, check your apps.
Kik also drains batttery very heavily. For me, I saw drastic improvement in battery life after removing kik. I use Whatsapp as a replacement and that uses some awesome power conserving sync protocol.

Hey Guys,
I have come from a nexus s to the nexus 4 and it has the exact same mediaserver problem
As soon as I start to listen to audio over bluetooth the mediaserver process just goes crazy eating the battery..
It is the highest process in the graph using 22% of the 45% drain with only 30 - 40 mins of playing audio..
Not cool..
I get fantastic battery life if I don't play music.. (2+ days)

This fixed my media server eating battery problem. I have a Samsung Note, but the above helped. YMMV
This refers to custom roms only I guess. Here are the steps I took, in brief!
*reboot into CWM. Wipe cache and dalvik only.
*DIRTY flash your ROM again in CWM
*Boot into ROM proper and set it up
*Reboot into CWM again. Fix Permissions. Wipe cache and dalvik ONLY once again.
*Reboot & Problem gone!
If this does solve your problem, please report so we can document what works for others.

I didn't have any such issues. I'm on the CM10 ROM though. However, check the Google music app and see if it's downloading/syncing your music collection with its services. That could be causing a problem.

supposedly the media server issue is sometime related to corrupt media. try removing some or all of your mp3, jpg, etc.
I first thought that it was because of a courrupt media file, but I checked every file I put on my device. No use
But Mediaserver only starts running when I'm using Play Music. It runs much longer than Play Music though

I'm 99% sure this is google now. turn off google now for a test and see if the media server battery usage drops back to a normal level.

Hi all,
My TD2 has started acting very strange when playing music, after 1 to 2 mins it stops when using TF3D music player.
I read some other posts that had a similar problem and followed the fixes but it has not helped me.
My music stops even if the screen is alive (ie on mains adapter)
I tried removing all the htc album art and folder.jpg from the music folders but that has not helped.
I have also checked the micro SD power save settings to see if that was the problem but sadly not.
Im not sure what i should try next except a hard reset (i really do not look forward to restoring all my settings) so i hope you can share some more ideas
thanks
Just to add this problem is only present when using TF3D music player, but not when using core player
join the club
I only have this problem with win6.5
with 6.1 every thing is perfect
u canm use pocket player
it will not turn off the screen when playing but it will only go dim
and it will work good and its power consumption is good
I too am using 6.5 and manila 2.5, but im not sure what has been the cause of the problem.
Last week everything was working fine, the only thing ive changed since then is adding some more albums. I have tried removing the new albums but still the problem persists.
Very unusual
I just tested this on the ROM in my Sig and am not having this issue.
Perhaps it is ROM related? Are you all on the same ROM?
im using HG R6 same as you :S

Interesting.
Then it would have to be either the way the music is stored, or an issue with your storage card.
I know that with cheaper storage cards, the data transfer rate is less than the higher quality ones.
FWIW, I don't have my music organized, just one folder for Music, sub folder for Praise and Worship Music and a second subfolder for recorded songs from Resco Radio (in case I already have the song in the music folder.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I tried copying the music to another SD card and the problem persists, so i think it is safe to rule out SD card fault
I have my music arranged on the card the following way
Music folder on root of the card
Inside music folder i have a seperate folder for each album
Inside each album folder there are the MP3's and folder.jpg
My music has been stored like this since i have had the device (since TD2 released in UK) and it has not been a problem before.
I think a hard reset at the weekend may the best solution
First, the get-outs. I don't use the HTC player, nor your ROM, nor even WM6.5, so I might be talking crap here. But, perhaps the problem might be corruption of the music database file, specially since it started since you loaded more albums on. I've seen this with other devices (specifically Cowon) before.
The database file seems to be AudioManager_Eng.vol, which is in \Application Data\HTC\AudioManager_Eng\
Since you're considering a hard reset anyway, nothing to be lost from deleting this file (if it allows you to, you might have to shut down TF first) and letting the music player recreate it again.
Apologies in advance if a) this has been mentioned elsewhere b) it doesn't apply to WM6.5 any more, and c) it screws up the muisc player!
Thanks for the suggestion, i deleted the music database and it did no harm
When i launched TF3D music tab it took a while to rebuild the database but sadly it has not remmedied the problem
Does music play properly from TD2 internal storage? Might be a clue, if it does.
I know you didn't ask for the suggestion(!), but why not use a good but simple 3rd party app like Nitrogen? It loads very quickly, as though it was a "native" app, you can get skins which are very plain, black, with good album art. And it plays more formats too. I've honestly never been tempted back to the TF3D player since using it.
playing music from internal storage exhibits the same problem
playing music from 3rd party music app (core player) works correctly.
Getting closer to solving this, i hard reset my phone earlier but the problem persists.
So i delete all my music and add 1 album at a time.
so far no problems
I can only conclude either one of my tracks/albums is corrupted in some way and freezes TF3D when it reads the library OR there is a limit to how big your library can be. mine was over 12gig.
either way im gonna keep adding an album a time, reset phone then test until i find the bad album. when i do i will remove the bad album and try adding another, this should prove if its a size problem or just some bad file.
Plz keep us informed about ur progress in solving this problem
and No using 3d Pary Programs Like nitrogin or core player doesnt solve the problem

Harking back to my Cowon D2 experience, it took just one album to corrupt the database. It could be badly tagged, or the tags contained accented foreign characters which the player didn't like, and it would freeze the player. It's a pain in the posterior to find out which album is responsible
.
Ok i have solved my problem (well found it)
There is 1 album in my collection that causes TF3D to Stop playing music when it tries to add the album to the database.
Im not sure why though!
All the tracks play fine in other players, all the ID3 data is legit and not containing any unusual characters and the bitrate is only 160 so its not too much for the phone to take.
When i get home i will rerip the album to mp3 and have another go.
I hope this thread may be of help to others with this trouble!
lesson here seems to be its not the software causing the problem but the media its trying to play, although the reason is not evident

search this forum for the word "music" im sure i seen a topic about this very problem
I had the same issue a while ago.
Turned out there was one album on my SD card (Lungs, by Florence and the Machine) that was causing the TouchFlo music player to stop playing any song. I removed that album and the problem went away.
I still have the album on my computer, doesn't seem to be anything unusual about it.
Can any body recommend a decent program to transfer music my pc to my phone?
Media go is really slow on my pc, I tried the old disc to phone and that keeps putting music in the wrong order and instead of having 12 songs per album I keep getting 12 one track albums.
What are people using and any ideas why this is happening?

I use the media go and mixzing on phone. Didnt find it too slow and i put 30alb on in one go.

The thing is with the pc its only got about 512 ram and 1.6 ghz proccesor which I find quite funny as the phone is almost more powerfull than the pc lol
If I were to put 30 cds on at one go it would be an all night job.
I need something that's not so intencive on the pc but actually works properly. Ideas?

The best and fastest method imo, "Copy and paste" it to your music folder.

Thanks for your help and suggestions guys. I'm guessing the music must be currupt or something cos even copy and paste not making it go on in the right order and mp3s keep skipping.

Can't explain the skipping, but is your metadata all correct?, that could explain why it doesn't show correctly. What player are you using?
I'm sorry I have absolutly no idea what metadata is. I'm using mixzing and paid for the upgrade lisence.

....and is what affects how players list tracks, so if I take 10 different tracks from 10 different artists, but edit the Album as "Selected remixes of the last 10 years", the player will list them all in the same album.
I have just started using MediaMonkey to go through my collection and update every track so I have the right album art displaying with Meridian on my phone, but still with some tracks the album art isn't being displayed at all but everything else is ok.
I understand what you mean now but its quite weird cos on my computer it displays everything in the right order with the correct tags.
I guess all I can do is blame some sort of curroption, it should be as easy as
1 take it from the external hard drive ( where everything is in the right order etc )
2 copy to pc ( still in the right order )
3 copy and paste to sd
But it all goes horribly wrong on the last step for some reason and it takes ages to sort it all manually but I may left with no choice
Thanks everyone for your help so far

I've been a diehard Winamp fan for the last few years but MediaMonkey is my number 1 player from now on and the features it has makes it a breeze to organise your collection. I've got my mothers music collection on my external, every song artist and title is in CAPITALS , and have put off transferring it to my lappy because of the amount of work it would have taken to sort it out, and whilst I'll still have to go through each individual file, sorting the casing i.e "Artist - Song Title" from "ARTIST - SONG TITLE" can be done with a click, for the whole collection.

I've come to notice that Mediaserver occasionally eats a disproportionate chunk of my Nexus 4s battery; it took the cake last night. I left work on a full charge and screwed with my phone through the evening, with MS taking a small ~10% chunk, before leaving it at around ~60-65% for the evening.
When I woke up, my battery was around 37%, with 1h20m worth of screen time. Here is a screenshot from around 35% battery.

I've read everything I can find on Mediaserver (on XDA and elsewhere) and can't really explain why it uses half the battery. I have Play Books, Play Magazines and Play Movies disabled. The only media I have on the device period is some music cached/save to the device from my Google Music account. I wasn't listening to Music at any point last night, and I don't see anything unusual in the running applications.
Any thoughts? This isn't an issue I experienced on my Galaxy Nexus with nearly identical usage patterns.
I've had the same problem with my Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus. Mediaserver is a service that can be used by pretty much any application but mostly the media related one (picture / video / music).
This mean either you have an app or file that is hanging up.
Try disabling media related app one by one and/or remove media file until the problem goes away.
Sometimes its a bad media file somewhere on your device. Bad download, corrupted picture/video, etc. I found that going through a File Manager and deleting items/folders that weren't necessary in the storage area cleared the problem for me. Give that a shot.
Same problem here and I just noticed it this morning. I'm actually glad that the battery doesn't suck as much as I thought and it's just this stupid media server. Still, a bug that needs to be fixed. Does anyone know if this has been reported to google yet?

I had Media Server running more than I thought as well and used:
http://www.gromkov.com/faq/repair/mp3_validator.html
It scans your entire MP3 collection for corruption, mis-matches, etc. and can correct it for you. It also makes a copy of the mp3 as a .bak file so if something did go wrong you can restore the original.
Out of my 1400 mp3's it found about 300 songs that had some kind of problem (stream error, corruption, mismatches, etc.) after it was all said and done there were 3 that were un-repairable.
Since I re-sync'd to Google Music my media server power has went down.
Just a FYI.
This question was already asked and answered yesterday. There is a really good explanation in that thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2026888
Well I scanned every single file on my phone and I only have 2 mp3s. They're both ringtones and both checked out fine. Yet this is what I saw this morning...
I had this problem a year ago. I solved it by deleting a couple bad photos i had taken that showed up as 0 bytes and were blank in the gallery.
From my experience, the media server drain is definitely caused by some corrupt media file(s) on the phone, not just mp3s. Could be photos, music, or videos. This could be jpg, gif, png, bmp, mp4, avi, mkv, mp3, aac, ogg, flac, etc. Pretty much any kind of media file the mediaserver looks for.
If i were you, i'd isolate the problem by moving all your media files temporarily off the phone to a pc, rebooting, then seeing if the media server is still acting up.
If the drain has gone away, slowly re-add your media back to the phone and re-test to isolate which folder or set of files is the problem. If the drain continues, do a manual search using a file manager for any other media files, then remove those too.
Well I deleted a bunch of files as well as ran the Rescan Media app. Problem seems to be gone for now.
What the hell is Mediaserver? Kill it dead. That's such a rude thing to see. 53% of the battery life? I'd be so upset.

Mediaserver is the actual service that apps such as music players and video players, such as Google Play Music, use to actually play music and videos. So its not mediaserver itself that is the problem but most likely an app that's installed that uses the service.
well if it is it's a stock google app. The only music player I have installed is google music which I hardly ever use. No other media players of any kind have been installed.
It seems to be the consensus in the xda community that it media server issue is related to corrupted media files, be it images or music. However I don't think this is the case.
I have the issue only when playing my sd card music from a music player like power amp. It doesn't happen when not using it. I turned off all scanning within the app and it is still happening. I think this is a 4.2 issue... I deleted all of the files on my SD card then resynced and it's still happening! This was not an issue with the same EXACT content on the galaxy nexus. Can anyone help fix battery drain issue!?

same issue here. i have not found a solution
I've been on JB so long I don't remember how ICS behaved. You should be able to find and play your media (video, music, pictures) here...
Then something has changed.. I simply have a pc with media streaming enabled, and all devices in the network allowed... I can see pictures through the "gallery", and music with "music play", but cant see videos. This is what I see.. I wonder if a factory reset would solve the problem..

It sounds like a permissions problem is preventing the Note from seeing your video files; especially if music and pictures are accessible. Is sharing enabled for the folders that contain your videos? What format are they in? The Note won't display content in formats it can't play. Although I can't see fewer formats supported in JB than in ICS.
All are .avi

I don't usually play content off my PC's, I use my server. But I just checked and the content showing up on my Note that's on my PC is in my documents folder. I don't remember adding or changing any settings so maybe that's where the Note's looking. Try putting a video in your documents folder and see if the Note finds it. If it does, it's just a matter of figuring out (on the PC) how to have more folders exposed.
A factory reset fixed the problem.. I can now see videos again.
Media video streaming not working
Hey guys, I signed up just to share this fix, because this was driving me crazy, as I watched a lot of videos around the house streaming from my computer, especially while cooking / etc. I had the same problem with no videos showing up in my list under "nearby devices", and I really didn't want to do a factory reset. Anyways, this worked for me-
Go to Application Manager under Settings.
Flip over to the right under ALL
Scroll down to Video Player
I hit all of the buttons. Force Stop, Clear data, Clear Cache, Clear defaults.
Voila it reloaded my videos and everything's back again where it was before the Jelly Bean update.
Hope this helps.
Funny thing I ended up getting another galaxy note 10.1 for my brother that was not updated.. I was able to see my media pc, then I updated it and was not able to see its content anymore... I tried the above suggestion, but it did not work.. Only force stop and clear data was available..
**update** I set my brothers note aside and started messing with mine to try and replicate this problem.. I was able to do it by changing the pc's media library name (network and sharing -> Change advanced sharing settings -> Choose media streaming options...) After changing the media library name and rebooted the pc. I was able to view the pc on the list, but no videos were showing up... After an exhausted search for various apps to reset the default video player cache, I started the process of resetting the device, then it kinda hit me.. What if the problem is not with the device, but windows media player cache.
After doing some research I found on my windows 7 64bit, the wmp cache files are located at "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player". In the Media Player directory there are some .wmdb you must delete.. The one named "currentdatabase" requires stopping the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service.. After deleting them, I restarted WMPNSS and launched WMP.. I checked my 10.1 and all the videos were listed. Anyways, thats it.
i got the problem last week...
i had my samsung all share running on my pc (not Wmp).
i could play all content shared with it on my tv (photos, music and videos avi & mkv).
i could view the photos and stream music on my note.
in video player i could see the server but no videos showing up.
i could play the videos with no problem on my note through thirdarty app mediahouse available on playstore.
cleaning cashe of video player ad ALL other allshare related apps sorted the problem.
and now... i'd installed serviio just to check something, and guess what... i cannot see videos shared wth it
i've cleared cashe again and it helped.
after comming back to samsung all share the situation came again... clear cashe again and it works again...
so i think it is our tablet firmware problem rather than wmp problem mentioned by rugburned.
or maybe both
.
Does the device need to be rooted in order to be able clear the default video player cache? Because the clear cache and reset defaults are never available to me.
The moment I get in my car, it starts playing "Life is Good" or other pre-loaded crappy music that's on my phone. How do I stop this?
I know that if I have any other music on my phone's storage, it will start playing that instead but I prefer to use streaming music and it's really annoying that I have to stop it every single time.
Wow that sounds horrible lol. If I had to guess, it would probably be that it's playing the flac files located in Preload/LG seeing as 01_Life_Is_Good.flac is the name the first file. Maybe try moving those up a level or two or rename them to .bak

That's strange. Mine doesn't play anything until i tell it to. Does the car have a menu option auto play? I assume you prob messed around with it already.

Mine doesn't automatically play either. Ford Sync, Malladus 1.2.2 ROM, Verizon device.

Some love it but I personally think it is one of the useless feature in car.
I don't think there is any option on vehicle but I will check. It is setup as if it hits play as soon as it establishes connection.
I moved them out of LG Preload folder but music player stills finds them. If player finds them, BT will still auto play them. I will just delete them to stop this. However it doesn't solve the problem which will return when I add any other music to my phone, in that case that will start playing.
I will check around car forums.
Thanks for confirming this is not Android related issue.

Auto play is a feature of A2DP just as auto connect is. There is mostly likely a setting somewhere in the vehicle's system to shut it off. If not, well then just remember, life's good...
You could remove the preloaded music files, cant play them if they arent there. I also use the app Bluetooth connect and play. It starts any app you want when a specific bluetooth connection is made.
This happened to me, it was google music, or play music, whatever your default music player is usually does this. Sometimes its poweramp, or other.. but usually it was google music for me. IN music settings, turn off bluetooth or auto connect.

But I want to keep some music files in my phone - eventually..
What I need is the way to hide music files from Music Player unless I play them back using something like ES Explorer or other file manager, or until I browse in Music app.

I can't find Music Settings, is it in the app or general settings somewhere?
If I turn off Bluetooth or auto connect then will I still be able to play streaming music? I really don't mind if I can disable auto play or bluetooth streaming for Music Player or Google Play Music since I probably will never stream stored music from my phone via bluetooth, all of my stored music is generally duplicated on my car anyway..
Another way to solve this issue would be to assign another dummy Music player as default music player, and when it runs it won't be able to find music that's stored on the phone.
Open up google music, then go to settings or menu and look for the autoconnect and or blue tooth settings and disable. It only disables Bluetooth for that app. BT will work other wise.

It's better when it is not forced on you by a few kids in Vienna Choir... Maybe I should put a random file with silence like 5 minute mp3 file of silence.. It won't help if I listen to something else and then turn the music player off because when I come back it won't go back to the 1st song, it will resume playback from where it left off, so still, just a temp ghetto fix won't really help.

I believe you are referring to Play Music? It has no settings at all.

Which music app are you using? I can just downgrade or use 3rd party music player that has option to disable autoplay or bluetooth connection, and then set that music app as my default app, and give that a try in the car.
I am pretty sure vehicle hits Play as soon as Bluetooth or "D800" is selected as source on my dash radio.
PS: I wonder if we should move this thread into a regular Android discussion area, looks like this is not specific to LG G2..

I use pandora mostly, but poweramp is my default player and has been for sometime. There are some options under the connections for BT to turn off auto play and other BT streaming options in there as well. MY car also auto connects but there is something on the phone telling it to start playing, and or something has the life is good set to your notification? so when you do connect it plays that sound as a notification?

Nope, Life is Good is the 1st song. If I remove that then it will start playing 2nd song. It is actually playing using media player, so it is not notification. So if I delete all Vienna Choir stuff, it won't have anything to play, if I add Led Zeppelin, it will start playing the Led, more bearable, but still annoying..
Does poweramp have the option? I will try it.
If we could find a way to block Music Player from Bluetooth access controls, that would also work, but there is no such setting in 4.2.
OK, I installed Poweramp, set it as Default player, disabled Resume on Bluetooth and then stopped Music Player related services, we'll see what happens now.
Update:
It didn't work. I tried poweramp and even with that as default player, I got LG music start playback. I had the option unchecked in poweramp .

Looks great, I moved to Blackberry Z30 for the time being but I will definitely try this with G2 so I know there can be something that can finally put a stop to this annoyance.
Thanks.
