I'm having trouble modifying a string in tapres.dll.0409.mui. I've tried changing the string, even just one letter, in PE Browser and even hex editing.
I've tried signing the file with various different certs, but nothing helps. The file does not work when I boot up with it.
What am I missing here?

Several things:
1) Were did you get the original file? The file may be corrupt to begin with.
2) You need to remove the signature (if any) before editing the file or it will be permanently ruined.
3) It is recommended to use Platform Builder to edit MUI files (you can download evaluation version from MS site for free).

I extracted the file from an RUU. I've been editing it with Visual Studio 2005.
I've tried removing signatures, when present. I've been using UnSigner for that.
It seems that even without editing it, just copying it into /Windows and overwriting the original causes the same problems. I've tried signing it with different SDk certs, also importing the certs to the device, and that doesnt help.
I read in a thread that you need a dll file with an intact PE header, so I've tried removing the resources from another dll and adding my resources to it, but that didn't work either.
Has anyone done this before who can chime in?

You are correct about the PE header.
Strange, moving the resources in to a clean DLL should have worked.
Two more things I can think of:
1) What OS is the original DLL for and what SDK did you compile the clean DLL with?
For example WM 6 DLLs will not load on WM 5, and in some cases WM 6 refuses to use WM 5 DLLs as system MUI.
2) If you can, make a simple app that will call LoadLibrary and see if you get an error loading the DLL.
if there is an error it means the DLL is still corrupt for some reason, if not it is most likely some kind of signature / permissions problem.
MUI files usually have only resources.
You can try re-dump it using my ROM Extractor.
When you can try to edit it again.
Some editors rather often corrupt files.
Try different resource editors.

Can you guide me to Platform Builder download, i have tried to search for it, even on MS site, and i found sdk stuff, not a debug software that can edit MUI.

I have tested the connection to my FTP... Its HTTPS, you have to install or allow the certificate in order to access my files.
Also, use Firefox or Opera to download. IE7 suffers from a HTTP Header error when accessing large files. ( i tried to fix it, but no luck)
Dont tell me its a nuisance to use FF or Opera instead of IE7.
If you really need / want those files, you should be willing to install one of those browsers...
I will UPDATE the files next Friday, any request, let me know.

Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK)
This is used to create your own recovery partitions. You can slipstream updates, software and drivers.
It is license free and can be optained from the link in post #1.
To mount the XVista.wim from the Shift's recovery partition, locate the ImageX.exe in your programs folder.
(default =C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\x86\imagex.exe)
Copy the XVista.WIM to a location of your choice (preferably c and run the Imagex.exe in the Command Prompt.
First you have to find out which installation you want to mount. Usually Vista contains more than one installation
(Home, Home Premium, etc...) Each has a number.
In our case its easy, its only Vista Business, so we mount Number 1.
Type imagex.exe /mountrw c:\Xvista.wim 1 c:\Xvista
mountrw means read and write access
c:\Xvista.wim is the location you copied it....
1 is the image number within the archive
c:\Xvista is the mount path (can be anything you want)
The installation should now appear in Windows Explorer like a normal folder and you can modify its contents.
Recovery Image
With regards to the recovery partition restoration process;
The previously referenced instructions involve using a binary file to dd the image back to the disk.
When your RAR file is unarchived, it shows a directory structure with multiple files and one large WIM file.
What mechanism should one use to replicate the RAR contents to the recovery partition?

The binary file you are referring to is a result of a different recovery approach. You copy the hidden partition into a binary file and copy it back to its exact location on the hdd, later.
If you want to use my RAR file, you have to follow these instructions, to create an external boot media.

im not sure what the problem is in IE7. But with Opera and Firefox, the download works normal.(rightclick "save as")

Please use Firefox or Opera to download it. I have some trouble with my
Server...but those browsers work
They also support resume, which is recommended with such large files.

you need a USB Stick, not a floppy. The image as well as the BIN file are about 3GB.
You can also burn the contents to a DVD if you make it bootable. I havent tried it yet, but should work.

There is something critical that I'm missing here..
The instructions in the link you provided imply that the USB drive will be bootable, and that it is from there that the recovery will occur.
Your RAR file does not have an MBR, nor does it apparently have a tool to install one, so *something* would have to be used in order to install an MBR to the USB drive.
What is that *something* ?

To make it short, you have 3 choices.
Firstly, you wait until i create a bootable recovery ISO, which you can burn to a USB stick. (maybe on Friday, if I can make the time)
Secondly, you try to make one yourself.
Or, you simply download Acronis TI Home, install it on a PC, create a recovery bootdisk, which you can put on a USB stick and use Mybackup.tib from my ftp to restore the Shift.( I usually use this method, since I dont have to setup anything, and I have office 2007 integrated)
I will try to polish up the problems on my FTP coming weekend and add some more stuff, USB iso and so on.
If you can tell me what mechanism is used to make the MBR in the recovery partition, I can make an ISO myself.. I've tried a few different boot loaders, though none seem to work with the RAR contents.
Or.. If an Acronis image of JUST the MBR/Track0 for the recovery partition is available, that would be relatively simple too.
Worst case, I'll wait for your ISO.

To make it a media bootable for a recovery, you need to use etfsboot.com
found in the folder /BOOT
Now, i have to find out which commandline parameter i have to use, which will take some trying out.
Worst case scenario, I can only make DVD bootable, but even that would be ok for most.

UltraISO can then be used to image the ISO onto a USB stick (4Gb or greater).

Looks like a good guide. Those seem like the right etfsboot parameters.
Im sure you can do it.
its basically the same way HTC does it, I guess the boot.wim contains the WindowsPE for the recovery.

I dont think sharing it in Emule is better than using Firefox.
I dont understand how it can be difficult to download it via a different
browser...Its just the same as IE
you just install opera or FF and rightclick the file you want...then choose "save as"....
Besides, sharing it in Emule is too slow, it will take ages to download it.

Update: An ISO was built, though when I imaged it to USB and booted off of it, an error of "can't find HP WIM files" resulted. I believe that the version of the <surrounding files exe> that I used was specific to HP, and there are a few more WIM files it's expecting. I've downloaded another variant and have it building an ISO now.
I installed Opera and when I right-click and save as, it downloads and says it saved the file. I did this 3 times in 3 different folders (I aborted once), but the files is nowhere to be found. In Opera under Transfers tab it says:

Phone: HTC Touch Vogue (US Cellular) w. coke 2.31 and a Rom I cooked in the PPCKitchen
The first one I created did weird things I did not like, so went back to Factory ROM from HTC website (I have a copy on my computers)
I then tried to pick and choose what I wanted in the PPCKitchen, but some thing happened there too. 1- no longer connects to the internet via #777
I wanted to go factory again so as to restart with using cabs instead so I can check 1 by one the items causing weird stuff to happen.
Connected to my desktop and got a can not communicate message -- it says Remote Network Error (Error 608) - anybody have a clue what I can do now - my laptop said the same thing.
If I can not connect through the desktop or laptop then I can not restore what needs to be restored.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Firstly, have you tried to hard-reset the phone? (red+green+stylus in reset hole) Ive always noticed with flashing a ROM a hard reset immediately helps with weird issues that may occur
If that doesnt help, then you can always connect your (less than 2GB) SD card, the original works great for this into your PC and copy over the ROM you want to use onto it XXXfilenameXXX.nbh file, once there or before you copy it either way, rename it to VOGUIMG.nbh and then attempt to flash/reflash via bootloader mode (power+camera+stylus in hole)
Sometimes you can start bootloader then plug it in via USB, but its just easier to have the ROM on a SD card for future emergency flashes if needed

Hard reset didn't work as it still uses the rom you just flashed.
I have the sd card to use but the file on the htc site for the shipped uscc rom is an exe file which includes the RUU so that I do not thing would auto run in the same way.
Any other ideas.
Download a custom ROM from around here for your carrier once you open the file (usually a .rar file) you will find the .nbh file there - rename that file to VOGUIMG.nbh and copy it to your SD card and use bootloader method to flash (BTW the ROM coming down from whatever site your original ROM is your getting is most likely just a compressed executable so you can probably use WinRAR or WinZip to extract to a folder and find the nbh file there)
Once it is up and running, connect via USB and attempt to synch and go from there

Thanks for the clues Detroit_Doug (referring to the first post).
I was able to place the phone in bootloader (bottom would read [serial]) then plugged in the phone (changed to [USB]) and ran the exe file. That worked. So now I am back to stock.
QPST does not recognize my phone so how can I get the rom backed up as just the vogueimg.nbh file.
I use Vista and it has its own extract the nbh file -- right click on an exe does not include extract. I really do not want to have to have another program to do what vista has built in as it takes over all kinds of compressed files when you install it.
But my original problem is solved. Going to try to find cabs for just the items I want so I can use remove programs when things go wonky again.

Simple answer: you cant
that is if Im reading your request correctly, you want to back your phone up into a .nbh file? if that is correct see simple answer.
ROMs are created to flash to a device, not like Ghost or Ateris that makes an image of the phone you can just restore the image in its entirety.
Your closest you can hope for is to install PIM or SPB backup solutions that will allow you to backup contacts, mail, texts, etc but unfortunately not apps or the OS.

Vista (like XP and Windows 7) has its version of compression software and will allow the compression and extraction of SOME compressed files although Windows will see an .EXE as just that an .EXE and may or may not recognize it as a compressed executable and therefor wont open it.
Your best bet is to use a small app such as WinRAR or even 7-Zip, with those during the install you can select to allow Windows UI integration as well as what file extension you want it to be associated with and which ones you dont (zip, rar, iso, etc)

Forget it on a Mac. You have to install VMWare, Parallels or Bootcamp to install a Windows version on a Mac. Or use someone else's PC.

No exe file will ever launch on mac OS.
Many emulators allow mapping of USB ports, but i'd say you are likely to fail or get corrupted sooner or later (i.e brick your device because of some VM/ emulator failure).
The best way would be to use bootcamp and install XP on a small partition.
You may also try a live CD like BartXP (google is your friend)

I like your wise alternative solution. Sometime things are not as complicated as they seem. Thank you for showing us the way.
I would reccomend against using emulation software for such an important task. For me I have a bootcamp partition of 7. I'm sure you can find a cheap copy of XP somewhere and install that (but i think 7 takes up less space!)
You will need to to the goldcard method I think and therefore install from your sd card.
You'll need a pc to extract the .nbh
If you have an Intel Mac, you might have luck with this.
I just checked, and the one ROM updater I tested (TUR_1.61.468.1) seemed to work fine running through Wine on my machine (iMac7,1 running Snow Leopard). I didn't flash over USB, but directly from MicroSD-card.
Here's what I did:
1) Download and Install Wine. I used this, which includes WineBottler.
2) After installing, run Wine.app.
3) You will get the opportunity to add a Prefix. This is the location on your drive that your virtual Windows system will be placed. Create it in any location you like, I create mine as 'WineDefault' in my user folder, so /Users/meptik/WineDefault/. This might take a minute.
4) Now find the ROM Updater you downloaded and right-click (or ctrl-click) on it, and Open With -> Wine.app.
5) When prompted, select 'Run directly in <prefix you just created>' and click Go. Installshield Wizard should run, click 'Next' and it should start extracting files.
6) Now, when the ROM Update Utility window appears, don't do anything.
7) Instead, head over to the Wine prefix you created earlier, and look in drive_c/windows/temp/. There should be some temporary folder here. Inside should be the files extracted by the ROM Updater, including RUU_signed.nbh.
This file, once renamed to LEOIMG.nbh, can be used to update your HD2 directly from your MicroSD-card. Follow this tutorial from step 6c.
so, in essence, using my Macbook and my HD2 means I'm a bit stuck for changing the ROM on the phone
I have been trying to follow several XDA threads regarding changing icons on the taskbar. The general order goes like this:
1. Run sdkcerts.cab and icone demarrer.cab on phone
2. Rom Extractor to copy .dll
3. Unsigner to un-sign .dll
4. ResHacker to edit .dll
5. Multiple File Signer to re-sign .dll
6. Total Command to move copy new .dll file into Windows folder on phone
However, after each time following those instructions and performing the soft reset, the phone freezes right when (I think) it is loading the Start Menu Button (I "know" this from watching it boot up without editing the .dll file).
I am using an HTC Imagio, with stock ROM - WM6.5 build 21849. If anyone has had failures/successes altering the taskbar using the method above for the Imagio, I could use some suggestions and assistance. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have also noted that when unsigning a dll from my imagio the files size remains the same, the dll should be smaller after unsigning.
I have looked into making a new sdkcert cab, its admittedly not my specialty. I understand how to do this but havent had time to really try. Along with the fact that the hspl will be out soon so I am waiting for that before playing with the taskbar.

Well, thanks for the reply. I finally got it to work, using the steps above. The only differences I made were as follows:
.:. I used the old msigner program, with the expired certs. I just changed my computer's date setting to 2009 at the time of signing it.
.:. I installed the Total Commander from my computer, whereas before I was simply copying the .exe to my phone and running it. Not sure if this made any difference.
So for now, I will just use the old msigner and change the date as needed to re-sign .dll files.
And also, the unsigner may not be needed, as I read somewhere that ROM Extractor automatically unsigns the file. Now, having said that, I still used unsigner, but the file size didn't change on mine either.
