Those of you with AT&T LTE plans? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How did you get data to work on your Nexus 4? Turns out those with LTE plans need re provisioning in order to get data on their Nexus 4. Is this the only way to get data or is there another way? I want to swap my SIM on the fly between my iPhone 5 and nexus 4 without having to call a rep every time I need to change devices. TIA

I just popped the Sim card in and it works. It just won't pick up lte, but hspa+ works fine. I had a Galaxy Note on ATT with Lte

There are those with iPhone 5 not being able to get data on their Nexus 4, maybe it's something just having to do with having an LTE iPhone plan?

I had an s3 w/ lte prior... popped that sim into my n4 and it just worked. speed test apps kept failing, so in added a second APN pointed toward the name Phone vs the WAP.whatever that comes default with the n4... no issues at all.

Came from an S3 with LTE, just popped it in added the PTA apn and have great service.

I had same issue as Outz - put in the LTE sim and speeds weren't great. Manually added the HSPA+ APN (phone) and now getting 5MB/1MB.

try this apn

I tried the pta apn, but I couldn't get MMS to work. But the HSPA+ apn gets me 4-10 Mbps down.

This is a well known issue with any plans that are attack GED to an IPHONE. If you want it to work then you will have to call each time. This is due to the data on the iPhone being routed to apple servers first

Theres a thread on Android central that iPhone 5 LTE users are getting data on their nexus 4 by setting up an APN without having to have their data plans re provisioned.

Anyone Running Their Nexus 4 On AT&T MediaNet?

I've been running phones on medianet unlimited for over 7 years now. In the past I saw threads where the original Nexus and Nexus S were detected by AT&T and were forced to use smartphone plans. Before purchasing this phone I wanted to check if this version of the Nexus was also detected as a smartphone. I've been using an international galaxy Note for a year on the $10 medianet plan and was hoping the Nexus 4 could also work on medianet.
Thanks
No, sorry

There are some that are using medianet with their smartphones.. You need to change the apn settings to whatever they are for medianet.. If I run by the forums with the information I will post it here for you.

I think the question is not in th APN used, but if AT&T recognizes IMEI number as smartphone - if it does, it will force data plan on you.
I've been usin Nokia phones for several years across the family and haven't paid more than $10/month for unlimited internet...
Wonder if the same trick will work with Nexus 4...
Anyone n the know - could you please post?
when I get my N4, I plan on switching to medianet $15/month unlimited data. Hopefully they wont recognize the IMEI
Medianet plan does not work with nexus 4..just came from att store..and rep put medianet plan for me..but when i got home..i recived text from att that i have smartphone.
Been running MediaNet all day on my N4, got a smartphone prompt on my GNex a few times...a quick call into customer service fixes it right away.

It is, you can find it by going to settings>about phone>status and look under mobile network type.
If your connection is idle it will say HSPA:10 but fire up Pandora or any music service and check, it will say HSPA:15
Just ordered the gn4 for the gf, hopefully the dumb phone data plan will still work for it
Yeah definitely hoping this will not get flagged and continue working. The phone has amazing specs and is dirt cheap. Definitely much cheaper than the HTC One X and has pretty much the same specs but for half the price.

AT&T doesn't seem to know this phone's a smartphone. When I switched my SIM from my Nexus One to the Nexus 4, my 2GB DataPro plan was removed and changed to whatever their dumbphone unlimtied plan was.
It was a pain in ass to get them to switch it back to a 2GB DataPro w/ LTE plan. Without the LTE plan, you don't have access to the HSPA+ APN, so you'll be limited to 1mbit downstream max. People have been getting ~3-5mbit (or higher I think) on the HSPA+ APN.

Where'd you hear that the MediaNET cap is 1Mbps? AFAIK, it's 7Mbps. That's what the GSIII forums say. I can't even run Speedtest.net (says I'm getting 0.8KB/s...) so I can't verify, but I'm pretty sure I'm getting over 1Mbps. In fact, the Galaxy S came from still gets 400KB/s (~3.2Mbps) so I'm pretty sure that MediaNET goes above 1Mbps.

I didn't hear that MEdiaNet was throttled, but I did experience something similar to your situation. While on "wap.cingular", Speedtest.net would act strange(9kbps downstream, ~1mbit up). I went to the store and got a new MicroSIM I couldn't get anything faster than 1Mbit. I called in, told them the Nexus 4 was an LTE phone so I could get provisioned for the HSPA+ APN's. They told me to power cycle (I just switched APN's from "wap.cingular" to "pta"), and I immediately saw 3Mbit.
So given this, I can only deduce that whatever plan I was provisioned for when I was taken off my 2GB DataPro was capped at 1Mbit. Given your findings, I'm concluding that anyone that had 3G service(MEdiaNet) before they rolled out HSPA+/LTEhad an unthrottled 3G service and anyone that gets it today gets throttled("Featurephone Data").
Also, the fact your Speedtest.net app is acting funny is usually a sign you're on the gimped plan that I got auto-switched to("Featurephone Data").
I can only guess and share my experiences -- since it seems the AT&T monster and their inner workings are far more complex then I gave them credit for. The same wap.cingular APN I was on, doesn't seem to be the same one those GS III guys are on.
Tbh, I don't really care for this thread. I can see that I'm getting HSPA+:15 when I use cellular data, and my transfer speeds are as good as they were with my old phone. I'm only paying $10 for almost 3G (US 3G is the worst 3G...), and ~400KB/s is fast enough for my usage. I can even streaming HD Netflix; I don't, but it's a good benchmark.
Also, the MediaNET plans are not monitored for consumption at all, so I have a true unlimited plan. When I first moved into a new apartment last October, Comcast was being stupid and couldn't get me internet for 3 weeks. I tethered for myself, my roommate, and all of our many daily guests. >10GB down during that time, at least 2GB up, and not a word from AT&T. Until AT&T gets a Nexus 4 variant, I'm not worried about my IMEI being recognized as a smartphone and automatically jacked up to an overpriced 2GB plan with faster speeds but marginal real-world benefit.

Help. nexus 4 can't connect to att

I had a dumb phone on att before this with no data plans. I got a new sim card recently from att, but for some reason the phone won't recognize my sim card and I don't know why. I tried my sister's sim card and it worked. She has an iPhone 4s. Does anyone know what the problem is?
Sounds like you may need to add a data plan or head to an AT&T store and have them help you sort out these issues. Did you put in the proper APN setting?

Call AT&T and tell them you have a new unlocked LTE phone. It appears that if your account isn't provisioned for LTE, then your phone is stuck in 3G only speeds (1mbit up and 1mbit down), or worse, no connection at all.
Easy way to tell is : If you only get service through the "wap.cingular" APN, and no connection through either "pta" or "phone" APNs, your line is not provisioned correctly.
I'd say you need to get a data plan. No settings or SIM card is going to change that since you're coming from a "dumb" phone plan.

The Nexus 4 isn't LTE.
On AT&T they have to provision the sim for the proper data plan. As an example, when I put my iphone5 sim (with LTE data) in my Inspire (an HSPA phone like the Nexus 4) I don't have any data connectivity even though I can make/receive calls and texts.
I know the Nexus 4 isn't LTE. AT&T doesn't. Your handset won't be able to access anything beyond HSDPA if your account isn't provisioned for LTE when using unlocked handsets that AT&T doesn't sell.
It has something to do with how they do IMEI detection now. My data plan was switched to dumbphone data within an hour of me switching my SIM to the Nexus 4 as they don't have it on their IMEI database and assumed it was a dumbphone.

I had the same problem, they are incompetent and when I called the first time they put me on some Blackberry data plan that worked for a day and then stopped working completely. Then I called again and asked to be provisioned for APN "phone" I just told them my phone is 4G/LTE and to just do it. With the settings from this thread, my phone now works fine on HSPA+, getting 3-6Mbps/1Mbps at home where the signal is mediocre.

Yeah, to access the HSPA+ speeds, you need to be on either the "pta" or "phone" APN.
The "wap.cingular" APN will top out at ~1mbit up and down. To have access to either of those APNs your account needs to be provisioned for LTE.
Out of curiosity, what's the difference between APN "pta" and "phone"? When I asked AT&T tech support I was told "pta is not supported, you get provisioned on phone" - whatever that means. But I went to an AT&T store and looked at the APN settings for the old HTC One X and it's set to "pta", while the new HTC One X+ released a week or so ago is set to "phone". Both LTE, both gave about the same speedtest results.
Not sure, but I know PTA is ostensibly for LTE.

mine stopped connecting to T-mobile. After 3 restores and swapping sims, and adding and deleting APNs, tmobile deemed my device as defected by fault of the radio. I also flashed stock rom through w/fastboot just out of curiousity and still doesnt work.
Could be a similar issue with the OPs
Mine stops connecting to AT&T sometimes too, it seems to happen when I transition from the home wifi to AT&T data. The phone status still shows that it's connected to HSPA, good signal but it can't send/receive any data. Luckily so far a reboot has solved the problem. Not sure if it's an N4 problem or a problem on the AT&T side.
IMEI Is the Key

I had a similar issue. I gave my upgrade to my wife for the new iPhone 5 and got a new sim card for the Nexus 4. Called AT&T and said that the problem was that the iPhone's IMEI was on my line; they added my IMEI. Rebooted my phone and voila! I am now connected to their HSPA network. Hope this helps.

The Nexus 4 won't work on Sprint. You'll need to use a carrier that uses a SIM card. I switched from Sprint to Straight Talk and my data is about 10x faster in NYC (its usually faster than Wi-Max in my usage), the coverage is better too.
Thanks

ATT Users: Moving From A LTE Device & Plan To The N4?

Grandfathered unlimited user: My Nexus is on it's way. I've been using a Note 2 as my driver. When I switch has anyone successfully stayed on the LTE plan or does their system throw you back to the HSPA plan? I want to try to argue that since the Nexus has quasi LTE it should stay on that plan.
(It's the throttling. When you are throttled on the LTE plan it drops you the HSPA, on HSPA it's rotten EDGE, the last time I checked. It's 2013. No one should have to do EDGE.)

I'm still on my ATT LTE plan and I've been using my N4 as my daily since Thanksgiving. Just don't take in in with u to get a new Sim card as the N4 needs a micro sim. Just cut it yourself and get a Sim converter if u jump between phones. My ATT LTE provisioned Sim card will work on the LTE PTA APN but it won't work as LTE speeds. I live and work right outside of Chicago which has LTE. From what I understand their system won't recognize the N4 which is fine and so it will just keep u on the plan u are on. I've heard stories of people taking their N4 into an ATT and getting put on a hspa plan. Then having to call into ATT customer service and giving them a LTE phones imei just to get their LTE back on their Sim card.

I bought a T-Mobile prepaid Sim to test drive and will probably switching from ATT LTE to T-Mobile HSPA+. If the coverage is right I'm getting around 10-12 Mbps on T-Mobile. That's plenty fast for my needs and also the unlimited data, freedom of pre paid sweetens the deal instead of ATT hspa.

Good info. The system has never automatically dropped you back? Are you manually going in and setting the LTE APN or selecting the option offered? I've had a nasty shock twice before when flopping SIM's. I plan on dropping the Note 2 micro straight into the N4.
The unlimited data plan combined with LTE is worth it's weight in gold.
I came from a Vivid on at&t with LTE unlimited. All I did was to copy my Vivid's APN exactly to the N4 and used a sim cutter to cut my sim down and I was good to go. As for throttling, I still get throttled after 5GB of data and it still knocks me down to 500kbps until my bill cycle starts over.

Nope never dropped me back In fact if I throw my Sim in my Skyrocket I still get LTE. I'm actually buying a HTC one X+ with LTE. Like I said before I don't get LTE but the AT&T PTA APN nets me that fastest speeds. It depends on your ROM which apns u get on default but u can always add any APN you want on any ROM. So like on PA I had to add the LTE APN to get those faster speeds.

Big question is did you go to 4.2.2?
If you don't want at&t to argue with you about whether it should have an LTE plan or not, your best bet is to activate the account with a device that is officially LTE capable, then just pop the sim card in the nexus 4 and don't tell them about it. AT&T will argue with their customers over the smallest details for absolutely no reason!!! That's why I cancelled my contract with them years ago. I can't take a company trying to argue over something in which they have NO CLUE, and try to force me into their school of thought.

Anybody have AT&T APN settings that work well?

I'm trying to find usable APN settings for AT&T and my Nexus 4. I'm using an iPhone 5 LTE data plan, so that's not an issue. When I use the official APN that's installed on the SIM card from AT&T, I get really poor speed test results. When I use the APN settings in THIS THREAD, I get good speed results, but I can't send or receive MMS messages.
Anybody have a solution that'll give me good download speeds as well as keep MMS working?
Try these settings. They work for me.
Name:att
And phone under APN type.
The rest is in the screenshot.
Let me know if that works! I get about 6 down and 1 up in Houston with Att.

Your MMS messages are working without a hitch, as well?
Also, should I delete the default APN, or doesn't it matter if it's there or not? I'm new to this. =/
In trying these settings, my MMS is working. I'm still only achieving download speeds of 2Mbps or less, while my girlfriend's iPhone 4S, in the same room as I am, is getting 5Mbps download speeds and 2Mbps upload speeds.
Any ideas?
I use the settings as seen in this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2139537
It's given me 6mb down and 495 kb up.
Edit: I'm in Madison, WI and I will also say that my MMS is working, both to send and receive.
The upload will vary I guess. My uploads are pretty constant here in Houston so its probably a network issue where you are.
Also you can delete the original APN with no problem

I think it's gonna be your iPhone Data plan. I work for AT&T and the SOC code for iPhone's data plan is always different to those of Android/Windows LTE data plan. Meaning, when you register the iPhone 5 it completely changes the code and from my experience that plan doesn't work well with Android devices. When an Android is register with LTE the SOC code is universal and doesn't matter which Android device you use. I left the iPhone 5 and registered the Galaxy S3 that I owned and haven't had any issues. If you're gonna be using an unlocked device the best idea is to have an Android device registered to your line because iPhone's always have their own codes. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tip. I'll find an IMEI of an LTE Android device, or I'll just hold out and wait for the HTC One's launch. I plan on buying one of those anyway.
