Lack of devices might harm development? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Will the lack of actual devices harm the development for this phone?

It's their flagship device, so Google is probably working at supplying more phones right now. I'm sure that they will be able to meet demand as to not to stunt the growth of development. I have a feeling they wanted to sell out of their first run to create some buzz around the phone, whether it's good buzz or bad buzz, I'm not so sure...

It's certainly going to slow down development since less people will have the device. But I'm sure it will be quite popular and well supported by December.

Don't worry, devs will have this device soon. I wanted a Nexus 4, but I was unable to snatch one due to Play Store issues on the first day.

This is exactly it! You're a dev who would be able to contribute to the community, but was unable to acquire a device. Yeah theres always batch #2 but what happens when it sells out? 3 more weeks?

It's a Nexus, I can guarantee you development well flourish soon enough. Back ordered or not, many people will do whatever / wait however long it takes to get this phone.

Motorola says if you want to flash custom roms buy from another company

I think they are making a big mistake taking this stance on root & custom roms.

Maybe they should stop with Android then. The platform is all about being open. I lost all interest in this phone when this was confirmed.

the rooting/modding/flashing community is maybe at most 10-15% of users, and that's being super generous

i can only completely agree with that! i wanted it but now i ordered a galaxy S...screw you motorola!
Modders may only be a very small portion of their user base. But I'll tell everyone who ask to avoid the whole Moto line of phones. And being a Computer Guy I get asked a lot.
I too have posted my feelings on a couple of other boards. Even on my facebook. Android is open source and it is my understanding that Gingerbread is actually aiming at getting rid of overlays like Sense and Blur. Good for Google.
This wasn't even a fully open admission from Motorola. From what I understand the eFuse thing was found BY modders...and not explained by Motorola. That is down right devious.
I was seriously on the fence about this phone...been driving my friends nuts with comparisons between Evo and Droid X. Was going to have both of them in 30 day period to compare side by side for a week...
...now...I love my Evolina more and she is the phone for me. Canceling my spot on the waiting list.
Its really just a stop gap phone until we see a 4.3" HTC device or other super phone with more features. I can live without custom roms and root access on this phone for 6 months.

I'd say it much smaller than that. There also seems to be a lot of die hard ROM flashing types buying the phone anyways
I dislike the encrypted boot loader, but not enough to not buy the phone. I am assuming we will manage to get root access. And with that we can do a lot.
Only time will tell how big an issue the bootloader ends up being.

Some sad news on XOOM

So Koush on twitter just announced he is returning his xoom.
which ****en sucks, i hope he is kind enough to give us RM when the sdcard is supported.
and also reports all over the net today say the motorola will stop production on xooms in June...OF THIS YEAR
this all kinda sucks in the eyes of consumers (me + you) for software developers and even accessories. I dont know, maybe im kinda freaking but, it looks as though the motorola xoom is the nexus one of android tablets....i just hope it stays that way in the dev world.
Today seems to be a dark day for the Xoom community as well. All these bad news about the end of production, people canceling Xoom orders for the new G-Tab, now Koush leaving. But life goes on and I love my Xoom! After all, the Xoom is just the vessel for Honeycomb, isn't it? And as long as the bee lives we'll be supported by great developers
Hey Honestly,
Koush is a cool guy and he holds a ton of weight in the android community and I personally respect him and his talent, that being said I could give 2 ****s about what he or anyone else buys, never buys, or returns, and so should everyone else.
Personally the Xoom does what I need it to, and I like it. Some people will feel the same way about the Ipad 2, some people feel the same way about the galaxy tab, and some people feel the same way about Cheese. Out of all of us whos right? Every single one
If you like the Xoom be happy with it, if not return it. Simple as that. My only request is you dont post on here about how awsome your new device is because honestly you can go post that in the forum of the new device and it will not make people angry or sound like your gloating
The Xoom is the Nexus One of the Tab community, because with all of these new devices coming out who knows how much bloat ware or sense or blur or other crap they will have on them. Samsung for one does a totally steller job of providing updates for their devices (thats sarcasm) so I wouldn’t buy anything from them, but again this is my opinion, and someone may totally love their devices and want to catch them all (just like the pokemon) .
As for Motorola, what they’re doing is pretty standard. Think about it they probably have been producing units since Jan possibly even December for a early march release, a 6 month production run in a market where every week a newer shinnier toy comes out I feel is pretty standard.
Thats all just my opinion hope it makes you feel a little better tho And in the great words of Bob Marley, dont worry be happy

Honestly, I doubt this is completely true. It just says that they are stepping down production, and with good reason.
Things like this happen all the time in industry. You build 1 million devices, and then you use your manufacturing capabilities to build other things while you sell down the inventory, then you start pushing out units again once you get to another level.
All this means is that they are selling alot less than they are making, which may or may not change when the wifi version is released.

Wifi will give a price point that more people can agree with.
I'm anxiously awaiting my Wifi order to ship from Amazon.
Motorola showed us in the past that if they don't make money with their device, they quickly stop to support it.
Knowing the Xoom is running on an early version of Honeycomb, this doesn't look good at all...Makes me want to cancel my preorder actually...

I really don't care what koush buys, he bought and sold the galaxy tab 7" in the same amount of time.
If he really cared about the xda community his bootloader would be open source...if he stops making it someone will step in and make one.
Edit: I know he does open source the code, but I'm unsure if the xoom support is in there.

I just got my xoom for the GPS maps and the turn by turn directions. It works good for that so Im keeping mine!
This is really one of the major downsides of the Internet. It used to be that somebody could have a knee-jerk reaction to something, but by the time it filtered through editors, producers, etc., and into the print and publication media it had already been toned down and made far more realistic.
Nowadays, somebody misunderstands or misquotes something, and five minutes later it's believed as fact by the majority of the population, which has been conditioned to get information in tiny little chunks without any appreciation for context.

This development might put the remaing xooms in high demand. Whatever happens I bet they will sell out FAST!. I am glad I allready have 2 of them in my home!. You know what they say..... a bird in the hand is worth 2 xooms on pre order at Amazon! LOL
i FREAKING LOVE my xoom. I have an ipad that also and I never touch it. Go android!!!
android ftw yo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTUwqxHpXMY
i love my xoom too and im pretty content with it. i sold my ipad, two weeks before the announcement of the ipad 2 (robbed the dude on craigslist)
my main concern at this point, and i think its to a certain degree, paranoia, that the pushing up updates, dev community mods and improvements all together will be few and far between.
after typing that i realize thats nonsense, motorola sliced off at least 1-2months of shipping delays by delaying adobe, the sdcard and the 4g...just to be ahead of the pack.
whether that option was smart in the longrun is a question for the finance people. but as a android geek im good with that, just as long as developers (like koush) still have at it.
Thank god Moto priced the Xoom so high that I(and other sane people) got the ipad 2. At least I know that Apple wont just drop their product like that less than 6 months after release.

[Need Supports][X-Play Section]Whats going to happen to The Play Section?

Hey guys, i've been here quite a while. And nowadays people keeps coming in with question that've been probably answered and a lot of dev seem to hav lost their interest in developing this phone.:banghead:
I really wonder who's gonna help us with our problem. And i sriously don't think the play moderator could handle everything here by themself. I obviously don't hav enough on me to be of any use to help this community.
So what're we gonna do when all the devs are gone?? Who's gonna provide us the things that we may need?? Where would we go to when we're lost in developing??
I'm really bump up with everythings that been going on with this device. All the news, the stories, the gossip, article, blog etc. Everything that this device had offered when it 1st appear had already been top off by some dual/quad core tegra 3 1gb/2gb ram device.
So the real Q is how long does this section's gonna last...

Don't worry. As I see, the developers are still crazy about Xperia Play and they prefere it to GS3 because of GAMEPAD.
This section is not gonna die.:good:
Yeah i also noticed that. The play does not have the community that it deserves. But my play just died and since i am on exchange year in taiwan right now i cant send it to sony. But phones are cheap here so i just bought a xperia sola. Problem solved. I miss gamepad though.

Dude, for example take a look at the X8 section.
The phone came out in Summer 2012 and has 180MB RAM (~90 of which is usable) and it has a HUGE community.
Over 400 ROM's, and has fully working Jelly Bean , how may I ask?, new developers come along.
But may be a slightly different story here
Just enjoy our magnificent devs whilst they are still there, Cosmicdan Wedgess sechko Markphyton rocks and our god pax make the play work at it's best!

I think it is time up for this device, Cyanogenmod team said they stopped supporting Snapdragon S1 devices, I think that's what the Play uses. At least we had CM7 and CM9 stable which both run great, we will get a CM10 port too from FXP. Overall the device is limited by the performance. Sony isn't going to upgrade this model, just have to hope another company will create something similar for us, but I'm not interested in tablets with controller.
Well, my xperia play recently broke and im getting a new one. I had a choice of S3, but i chose the play. Because its unique and wont die.
HOPEFULLY

I'm hoping more will join this thread to asses their needs of the Play section. Just so we'll know what're n how many are still interested in this section. Hopefully to get more than 50 users/members to tell us n re-asure us that this section is gonna last. Coz this "may be" my last device. As my twins needs more financial attention than my interest in gadgets. I lov this phone. Just want to keep it up to date as possible. Hoping to get more n any kinds of supports from users/members to keep this section alive.

I'm not sure if this section is gonna last much more time. I think the Xperia Play is indeed an awesome phone but it just wasn't made for the android hardcore user. I used to theme my phone so much and to change Rom every two days. Now with this phone I don't do either if those things. Anyway I can't imagine myself with another device

[Q] Have I missed out on the Nexus 4 bandwagon?

Since Android was released, I've been a huge fan and my first Android phone was the HTC G1. All my phones since then have been Android with my current one being the Samsung Galaxy S2. While they have all been great, I have been really disappointed with not having timely Android OS updates. Some updates were skipped while others were delayed to the point that they were no longer the latest version by the time they were released. I then decided that my next phone would be a Nexus device. I was tempted by the Samsung Galaxy S3 when it came out by decided to hold out for the rumoured Nexus 4.
Everything I read about the N4 was looking promising but I'm not one to be an early adopter so when the N4 came out, I decided not to order it and wait for the early adopters to report any issues and make my decision based on that. When the 2nd wave of N4s came out, it was still too early as many people still had not gotten the N4 from the first wave so I decided to hold off yet again. I knew I'd be waiting until after Xmas for when I would likely be able to place my order.
Since early January, I have read a lot of user comments and I feel there is nothing being reported that has put me off. I am now in a position where I would be happy to purchase the N4 if/when it comes back on sale in the UK. I now hear rumours that this may not happen until mid-February. This would be around 3 months after it's initial release which is much longer than I hoped to wait for. I am really confused which way to go on this.
Reasons to skip the N4:
1. Being 3 months in probably means we're about 9 months away from the "Nexus 5". With JB update starting to roll out to the SGS2, I could quite possibly hold off until the N5. Also, there's no guarantee that the N4 supply won't be delayed further.
2. The flaky supply issues could indicate that LG accessories, spares and repairs could be affected as well. Even if available, they may charge a disproportional amount compared to the phone price.
3. I'm intrigued by the rumours of the Motorola X phone.
Reasons to buy the N4:
1. The N4 is still a great phone even if I only get my hands on it in late Feb. I don't use the phone for gaming so the spec of the phone could easily last me 2 years (or whenever I get tempted by another phone).
2. Google and LG have really shaken the market by bringing this phone at such a low price point. I'm hoping it will lead the way for other manufacturers that top end phones shouldn't be such a huge price. Buying the N4 shows my consumer support for this thinking. As a consumer, wouldn't we all love cheaper (top end) phones.
Any thoughts, suggestions?
Buy. It.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
The only thing REALLY bugging me about the N4 is that google hasn't restocked in over a month.
You said the thing that bothers you most is lack of timely updates. Buy it and be happy.
When the n5 comes out you can sell the n4 with minimal loss. Go for it.

I don't really understand this part, where you basically say "I've waited 3 months for the N4, I'd better wait 9 more to the N5".
You waited until after Christmas before deciding to place the order, so you've actually waited 1 month more than expected as of today. I think that's not that big deal.
In either case you're gonna wait, so why wait more?
Following your line of thought, you should wait 2 months after the N5 launch (if you want to wait for the opinion of the early adopters as you did for the N4) before buying it. This'll make you wait roughly a year from now.
Are you sure the N5 launch will be as smooth as butter? What if the N5 is another really well-built and cheap device... and you have just the whole world waiting to lay their hands on it?
Who says you'll be able to get the Nexus 5 at launch?
To sum it up: waiting for the new Nexus device is not worth the time. The Nexus 4 is an awesome device, buy it (sic)!
And if the Nexus 5 will prove being that much better smartphone, you'll still be able to sell the N4 at a great price and buy the N5 without a hitch.
And if the declarations of LG France are truthful, you'll probably have to wait just one more month before unwrapping your brand new LGE Nexus 4
If you need a new phone get one. Thats the way I roll. I'll use this phone until its old and busted, doesn't hold a charge, Or I crack the screen.
DO you NEED a new phone? Can you afford 350 in throw away cash?
Those are the only two things I can see stopping someone from buying anything.

I was calculating the 3 months wait based upon when I reckon the phone will come back in stock in UK and the earliest I'd get the phone in my hands. However, I do accept your point that if the N5 came out then I wouldn't get it at launch and would be waiting a month or two like I normally do. I guess the frustration of waiting for it to come back in stock made me mis-calculate the timings

I don't "Need" a new phone but I do "really really really want" one. I'm assuming you're talking about $350? In the UK the 16GB is only priced £280 (plus a little for postage). I can definitely afford this amount for the phone.
Ok, thanks for all the comments. My mind is made up, I'm getting the N4 as soon as it comes back in stock in the Play Store. Hopefully the Google Wireless charger will have been launched by then as well so I can have phone + accessories from day 1.
I managed to place my order bang on 3pm went it came back in stock in UK on Wednesday. It's already been delivered at home so I'll get a chance to play with it when I get back. Less than 43 hours from placing order to being delivered is pretty good. Looks like Google has definitely gotten their act together. I also see that they are still in stock showing 1 to 2 weeks shipping (which is what it said when I placed my order) so it's all looking very positive.
Ignore this, you've already got it lol
Enjoy

There's nothing negative about the term bandwagon (definition: joining a growing movement in support of someone or something). In my eyes it is a bandwagon as more and more people are starting to realise the benefit of a Pure Google Experience device.

Comparing based on the number of times it has sold out is pointless unless you factor in the number of units available each time. If they released it in smaller batches then I'm sure they would have more than 3 "sell outs".
The content of your post is both pointless and unhelpful as it is but the fact that you wrote it after I already posted that I've purchased the device AND taken delivery takes it to a whole new level. *slow clap*

Motorola is still looking for a product manager for the X-Phone, so it isn't THAT close, and it's biggest advantage over the N4 will be probably be a 1080p screen, which is nigh-moot on a phone. It will probably have LTE variants, too.
Buy it.

[Q] Find 5 questions before purchase

Hello you all
mods, feel free to move our delete my post if you feel it's in the wrong section
I am planning to buy the find 5, but I want to be sure this is the right buy for me. I know the performance is awesome and the screen is one of the best or there, so +1 for those, but now for development support. I see there it's a fresh new cm10.1 so that seems ok but are you developers going to keep this phone for a long time? The price tag is pretty hefty for me and I want to keep the phone for a few years. Any change for long term development here? With android 5, and up support? Fast kernels?
Thank you so much

ask Oppo, but they might not guarantee it, or go back on their word

Yup. So far, I see myself as far less likely to wind up in the "OMFG I HATE THIS DEVICE AND I AM SICK OF DEALING WITH IT" category like all of the Exynos4 CM maintainers did.
That said, if I get spread too thin, the device might receive less attention in the future.
A lot depends more on Qualcomm than on Oppo.

Well, you got that right
The exact reason why I was planning to skip on the s3
And to be clear, I wasnt trying to demand support, just asking whether it was there or not
And I saw the full source code was available so this seems like a good source to learn development xD
Thank you

Oppo has been great about getting the find it developers hand. They have given out almost ten free devices. So there will be Roms, not as much as a nexus but a few. Again in the long term support won't be as good as a nexus but it uses a qualcom chip so support is easy, not nexus easy but second best. I say it will be supported as long as the nexus four dependent on binary issues.
