So, my Nexus 4 has been running great. I left the phone on my desk while I watched some TV and when I returned it wouldn't start. I thought this was odd as it had 30% battery when I left. I thought perhaps something was running in the background and managed to run it down. But even after connecting the phone to the charger, it wouldn't restart. However, I was able to reboot the phone into Fastboot mode by holding down the Volume Down + Power key. It restarted and I had 26% battery, so that wasn't the issue. Something must have caused it to lock-up. My question is what I can do to determine the cause. Are the log files that might be of assistance?
I used the Nexus 4 toolkit to unlock + root the phone. About an hour prior to this issue, I flashed the new CWM 6.0.1.9 Touch Recovery using ROM Manager. Other than that, I have no idea what could have caused this. Prior to that, I had the stock recovery installed. As for running software, I just had Gmail, Chrome, Speedtest
It might be because of the Rom try flashing back to stock
The ROM is stock 4.2 with the latest OTA. Do you mean that I should reflash the stock image because my system may be corrupted?

Everything should be ok man. Don't re flash or anything. I did the same to my phone as you and have had amazing battery. Just let it die all the way and recharge. See if it happens.

Well, after trying to charge my Nexus in the car, it appears the USB has gone kaput and only charges the device now (although it doesn't actually say it's charging, the percentage just increases). Anyway, as it would appear a return is in order, I'd like to remove the unlocked sign on my bootloader to be able to send it back, but without USB, the conventional fastboot/adb method is out the window. Anybody got any suggestions? Thanks.
Bump, per chance?
Use wugfresh toolkit and Hitt the oem lock option

The OP clearly said they are looking for a method that doesn't require USB. So your method suggesting he use wugs toolkit isn't the answer he's looking for. And honestly I don't think there is a way to do it without USB capabilities.

I don't think you can.
I'm not exactly a pro at this, but as far as I know you need fast boot mode to lock/unlock the bootloader.
I installed twrp last night (got bored with cwm) and noticed it has a command line section. I don't know if you could use this to lock the bootloader. If you look up one of the manual guides to locking/unlocking maybe try whatever it says to type in a terminal there?
The only problem is then you couldn't put back the stock recovery.

You can use this to install the stock ROM and kernel, there is also an option to unroot it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929270 (install zip in custom recovery)
I don't know how to OEM lock your tablet without a pc..
Hope this helps

I would be really surprised if it is not simply a bad micro USB cable. Try another one, if you have it laying around, or pick one up for cheap. My unofficial cable would charge, but not write for some reason.
i had the same problem after using a car charger. After some days that i charged with original charger only, charging icon started working and also fastboot. But usb otg functions were still dead either in twrp recovery or inside the rom.
After i flashed ota update (i was in stock 4.1.2) for 4.2 it magically started fully working.First i thought that it was 4.2 that made it work, but i went back in 4.1.2 (nandroid restore) and it continue to work ok.Of course i dont use anymore 3rd party chargers.I see now that my bootloader is 4.13 but it work ok with 4.1.2 too,so i will not change it to 3.41
I've tried 4 or 5 different cables and no luck unfortunately. Going from my beloved PA 2.54 to stock 4.2 temporarily to see if it fixes it, fingers crossed!
Update: Unfortunately I've not been so lucky problem persists...

And now I'm stuck on 4.2 with root not working, my recovery corrupt, and USB still not working :crying:
Looks like I'll be sending it back and hoping they ignore the little opened padlock on my splash screen

Adb won't do it, it has to be fast boot, and it has to be usb.

However, they'd be well within their rights not to so I'm not guaranteeing. Best of luck!
I have had my Nexus 7 with SmoothROM on it for a long time now, I use it here and there, but I noticed it acting kind of glitchy lately especially when using the keyboard. I got 2 notifications from GROUPER (i think thats the name of it...) saying I had an update to SmoothROM (v 4.2) and that google apps needed to be updated... I did the normal crap, wiped everything, flashed the new smoothrom, flashed on the google apps, but when I rebooted it just keeps popping up saying "Unfortunately, the process blah blah gapps has stopped", then when i press ok it says Unfortunately, Setup Wizard has stopped".... and when i press ok on that it just keeps popping back up... will NOT go away no matter what I try...
On top of this... I tried going to fastboot and putting it in recovery mode but then it just goes to the main boot screen that says Google with a lock at the bottom, and it is just stuck there...
So what would be the easiest course of action here? I can't get it into Recovery mode I don't think, although I forgot how to do it in the first place, I thought it had to do with sliding the lock somewhere at the boot screen but I have tried that and nothing seems to work...
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Update: I managed to get into the settings and put USB Debugging on
so now it gets recognized by my computer and I can view and transfer files.... But I still can't get it into recovery mode so what should I do now lol?
Should I be looking for something like this " Google Nexus 7 Toolkit V3.2.0 " ?
Use wugs to restore to stock and start over
If you go back to smoothrom make sure you download it again might have been a bad download

When you power on your nexus press volume down and up and power button together for a couple of seconds. Your screen will go off and then "Google" will come up. Continue pressing and you will be in the boot loader menu. Go to recovery and install the ROM you want. (Can you get there?) Or else try to install it from your PC with cmd. Let me know if the first way works.

Same here, I dirty flashed it from stock instead of full wipe. Always do full wipe just in case.

is the lock under the Google logo open or closed? if you installed a custom ROM, it should be open. if it is closed, the bootloader somehow got locked again.
however, i think the issue you are experiencing is related to gapps. you either have a bad download of gapps or flashed the wrong gapps (some roms require custom gapps). try the volume down+power thing to get to the bootloader, then go to recovery. if you can't, flash a recovery using fastboot or use one of those toolkits to flash a recovery. before you re-flash your ROM and gapps, i'd recommend verifying the MD5 sum, since that will tell you whether the downloaded file is good or not.
Sorry for the late reply guys but as it usually goes my ADHD got the best of me and before I came back to read this i ended up using that Google toolkit thing that I asked about and did what somebody said (option 9) to download and then install the stock ROM (but thank you!!) BUT in case anybody would like to know the lock was open and I could put it in fastboot but it wouldn't boot me into recovery. Hopefully anybody else updating smoothrom that ends up in my position will find this thread. I also suggest just downloaded the ROM and flashing it with the recovery that was my first time using that update ROM thing and it screwed up lol.
Again thanks a ton! Is there any new ROMs out there for the Nexus 7? Anything better than SmoothROM (or stock, lol)?

Rasbeanjelly with Franco kernel. I think it's the best out there.. I got 5k on quadrant with no overclock anywhere. Games play with no lag, it's very good

Ok, so I've looked through various threads today and cant seem to get a fix.
First, heres the symptoms- N4 (4.2.1) has massive battery loss/ something running in the background killing it (battery page says Android OS). I killed all the background apps and everything else it would let me kill and it still will not charge (tried different plugs, cables, outlets, etc). I've had it plugged in for the past 6 hours and I'm finally up to 9%.
The phone has been rooted, and I'm trying to flash it and return it to stock, but thats when I ran into problem 2. It won't recognize that it is plugged into a computer (running on a Mac, but tried XP machine, Win7 machine, and again different cords).
From here, I don't know where to go. I'm new to this Android ball game so I don't have a ton of background here, so hopefully I missed something simple.
PS by massive battery loss- I fully charged the phone last night, then went to class today with wifi/blue/gps off and always have 5 bars of AT&T here and after 1 Hr, I had 35% battery left with Android OS consuming almost all of it.
definitely pickup gsam battery monitor and better battery stats to monitor the battery usage. gsam might be able to tell you what app is causing the battery drain. bbs is more technical but might tell you more about what is going on. Make sure your maps app is not reporting your location.

Thanks for the response. Downloaded it and the usage is 1%, so now I think its something more than that. Either hardware or some weird glitch??
It won't charge and isn't recognized by any computer?
I'd call it a hardware fault to be honest.
Try to get a stock rom on the device, re flash it and RMA it.

Just let it die and RMA it anyways. They arent gonna bother to Charge it, then "look to see if you Rom'd it".

just remember when you go to flash the downloaded files theyll be located in the /download folder (just in case you didn't know) and also by "full wipe" I mean factory reset + wipe cache

Well now it seems I've hit another brick wall. After entering into, or trying to enter into Recovery mode, it comes up with an error message saying No Command. I swear, I'm not usually this bad with these things. Any ideas?
For future reference MTP doesn't work with Win XP, and you need a separate app for it to work on a Mac. Should be recognized on the Win 7 PC though.

That means you currently have the stock recovery installed. First unlock the bootloader again with the Bootlock app. Then download Rom Manger from the play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager . open it up and select flash clockworkmod recovery. When its done re-lock your boot loader again with bootlock. Then boot back into recovery manually (or even easier, open rom manager again and push reboot into recovery) and proceed to flash the stock rom & recovery files. (Don't forget to wipe first)

Frequently, after fully charging, I unplug charger, and N4 still shows "charging 100%". Rebooting solves the problem, but any ideas of a better cure? I only remember this happening after 4.2.2. Is this a known issue that I've missed? Don't have a lot of apps, so I'm not sure if it could be an app. I haven't added any apps before this started. Thanks.
Seems like a bug. Try custom roms and kernels. If this isn't fixed flash the Google images and rma it.

How about we try a less extreme method and just factory reset the thing first?
Thanks. Would you know if the reset will get me back to 4.2.1, or if 4.2.2 is "embedded" as my OS?

A factory reset/wipe data just wipes YOUR DATA, and reverts back to the base installation, which in your case will be 4.2.2
Hello. I have a problem with my nexus 4 randomly rebooting. I press the power button to bring on the screen but instead get a reboot followed by the powering down screen. I then have to power on again to get back to normal. Anyone else had this problem? My phone is unlocked rooted stock.

Are you uv'ed at all? That sounds like instability due to low voltage. I've had that happen before on wake.
Edit: I know you said "Stock" but I thought I'd ask.
No just stock settings. Logcat shows lots of errors that i dont understand including SPAN EXCLUSIVE EXCLUSIVE and Fatal Signal 13

many of those "errors" you see really arent errors. anyways, if you wantca log of a random reboot, you need to run a last_kmsg after you boot back up. itll show why you had a random reboot. if you rebooted manually after your bootup after the random reboot, then its too late. last_kmsg is produced by your phone when the device reboots on its own.

Ok, good method. Try Flash PA 3.60 good rom, install custom recovery, download zip and gapps, stock no good, no customizations, custom rom best.
Went back to stock everything using fastboot. Locked bootloader unrooted no apps installed and no stock apps updated and yet still getting reboots. Decided to take back to shop. It behaved itself in the shop but they were helpful and exchanged my unit. I now have a model with the tiny feet
