Does it come rooted - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend has a nexus 7 and I was wondering if it came rooted. I know that some tablets have stock root so just wondering
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app

No you have to unlock bootloader and root it yourself.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

I don't know of any tablets that come rooted. You may be referring to an unlocked bootloader, which quite rare these days. An unlocked bootloader makes it easy to root, but does not make it rooted. The nexus 7 comes with a locked bootloader, you can unlock it with a toolkit or with one of the how to guides on xda. Remember unlocking the bootloader wipes the device so do that first or you will have to use an alternative method of rooting and backing up your stuff.

Well see the reason I asked this is because my little brothers tablet(which the charging port is broken on) came rooted. Were not sure why as for the fact that it only has a power button and nothing else

My buddy has a cheap little Coby 7" tablet that has no volume buttons. Volume is controlled via LCD "buttons."

In theory, a device manufacturer can do whatever they want with a device they sell. I've never heard of any Android devices sold that "come rooted", but that's not to say they don't exist. No name-brand manufacturers do this. Even Google doesn't ship rooted devices. The benefit with Google devices though is the fact that they make it trivial to do so if you want. Many manufacturers also are starting to realize that locking down the bootloader is stupid and counter productive and have made it easier to root their devices.
I could see some cheap Chinese tablet manufacturers doing this, and trying to sell it as a marketing ploy, but that's about it.
Honestly, I don't think it would be wise for manufacturers to ship devices with root access. It would just be asking for trouble, because they would have to support all the idiots who did something stupid and broke their tablets/phones. By leaving root out, and making it so that you have to actually DO something to get it, they can deny support/warranty claims if you screw up. Also, most people don't need or care about root access, so they would only be appealing to a minority of users.

Road back to .91 from .141

Just creating a post in general to showcase my steps in an effort to get back to an unlockable boot loader from the .141 crap moto placed on my phone upon sending it in for repair.
Lucky for me, I was still under warranty so I sent it and and I am tracking it now... For the comment section I told them that I did not appreciate them upgraded me to a really bad version (.141) that made my phone really slow and unstable, and of course caused my once unlocked bootloader to no longer be unlocked.
Actually posting this because I'm frustrated and I hope that it will work so that way if anyone else is under contract or warranty can try and *hopefully* get the same results.
I will update as soon as anything happens.

If you need to bring it in for service or whatever, just return the device back to stock and relock the boot loader. Done.
I could be wrong now, but if you relock a bootloader it will always say "relocked", I know this from my HTC evo 3D.

Yes you are right.
But I don't think Google really cares, the whole point of Android is to be open sourced. They aren't HTC
You could always play dumb and say that's how you got the device.

Yup, just checked and it doesn't mention the fact that it's been relocked anywhere.
Don't have any experience with this relock thing on my N7 or Gnex.
Go for it man! ROOOOT YOOU MUST!
On a more serious note, say the USB port breaks, while you are unlocked.
You cannot relock it, therefore they may not repair it under warranty.
I have no experience with returning Nexus's but all the other devices repairing under warranty was a pain anyway.
Never tried it with an unlocked device though
You can just use the WugFresh Toolkit (which you might use anyway when you root).
It has an option to relock "OEM Lock" which it states "full return to factory settings"

Has anyone attempted it? Or are people receiving retail units with the bootloader locked?

Any unlock news for latest Verizon update?

I updated my RAZR m to the latest release from Verizon, and since I had not unlocked my bootloader yet, I know I cannot unlock it at the moment. Even if I rsd to the original 4.1.2 I still will be unable to unlock, correct?
Is there any work being done on a new unlock? I'm relatively happy with stock for now, but once cm10.x is more stable, and motors stops updating the RAZR m, I'd like to be able to flash something cool.
Thanks,

Yeah, here's your news; the new update blocked the ability to unlock. You can't unlock, even if you downgrade, but you can still root. The unlock exploit came out in April and people were told to do it, before it was locked up. Dan also said he probably won't ever run another exploit. You can root and use SafeStrap to run older SS compatible ROMs. You're SOL for the AOSP stuff, though. Don't say you weren't warned.

If your on Verizon and got the phone through Verizon do what I did before the time runs out... call them request a replacement device go through all the trouble shooting for your "issue"( I said the ear piece speaker intermittently goes out, yet works on speakerphone thus indicating its hardware related) after trouble shooting and problems still occur you get the green light for a replacement. request that they make a note to the warehouse to send you one without the update (I said because the new update caused data drops that didn't happen prior to update)... I hated having to give up my brand new device for a "like new" one but its better then having a locked device... the CSR in the chat said all devices in the warehouse will be updated 2-3 weeks after the update push so... act fast you may still have time left... if you get one with the update call them tell them your phone is working fine now and send the replacement back... or say something like the replacement is defective and again request a note to the warehouse... where there's a will there's a way....good luck

Purchasing used Note 4 Developer Edition

I just purchased a used DE Note 4. The baseband version is N910VVRU2BOF1. The guy said it was used on Verizon since this August, but he said he didn't accept any OTAs from Verizon. I haven't received it yet and he hadn't shipped it, but how would I be able to tell if the bootloader is unlocked before he ships it? I'm wanting to install TWRP and put MOROM on it as soon as I get it. I hope this isn't a stupid question, I've been out of the Android tweaking scene since last year so I'm a little rusty.

You will have to start the phone holding the power, home and volume down. When the menu appears, it should say mode: developer, with blue letters, if I'm not wrong. If you don't see developer anywhere in that menu, it's retail. Ask him to provide you with a photo of that screen.

Thanks for the reply! I've never owned a developer edition device before. Still running my MDK Galaxy S4, rooted with Phil's Touch Recovery. Nothing wrong with it at all, just wanted to get the last phone available from Samsung with an unlocked bootloader, removable battery, and expandable memory. Who knows how long I'll hang onto this (assuming the bootloader is unlocked). I guess I could attempt to send it in to Samsung for a reflash?

If the phone was originally a developer edition, you can send it to Samsung for a reflash, if necessary. There should be proof that the phone is actually a developer edition (receipt from the seller), or IMEI and model number which should be SMN910VMKE. If the phone is still in warranty, they will most likely reflash it for free.

Good luck, I hope it is as described.
I had a similar experience, but the phone had a hardware defect, which was really questionable, however the seller had proof of purchase and the phone was in warranty.
Then, it took Samsung a month to fix the problem. First, they fixed the hardware issue by replacing the motherboard, screen, etc, but they flashed the retail software and it came locked. I had to call them second time and speak with someone from the repair center and explain clearly and repeatedly that the bootloader should be unlocked as it's a developer edition.
After a long month and 2 trips, it's running great, how all the Note 4 should run, no ads, tethering, etc.
