Anyone else notice that since KE1 the clock and date on the lockscreen are squashed right down at the bottom of the screen and look sort of naff?
In KDD they were higher up on the screen and it looked more professional.
Just wondered if it was me?
You can change where the time is shown on the screen, perhaps that changed?
Check settings -> display -> screen something (mine is the topmost) -> background
Yes, I noticed this as well, also the date is no longer in line with the clock, which is annoying. I hope they put it back to how it used to be in the next update. It has nothing to do with lock screen settings, I've tried them all it won't go back to how it used to be, though I think it looks better with the clock etc at the top of the screen now, less squashed.
I thought something looked weird, now I can't unsee it.

Haha same here
interesting, I use the pattern lockscreen so the clock is at the top for me.
Any updates on the Lockscreen except the Clock issue that is mentioned? I have made a port of the Galaxy S II Lockscreen on Galaxy S, hence I am interested in knowing the same..
Hey! Can someone with a note set a pre black background a the lock screen background and report whether it looks normal? Someone had reported a problem with the gallery background with a black image, but I couldn't find a mention of lock screen there. Just google image search "black" and download and set it as lock screen. Seems to be giving me pinkish hues... same image works fine as a desktop background...

Most lockscreen wallpapers look horrible on my Note, not sure if my 240dpi is causing this. I use another lockscreen app set to transparent, so I don't care.
The Note's screen is 24 bit, so a picture with 16 or 8 bit depth might not be rendered properly.
Best to find a 24 bit image to test, try Google search.

Same here.
Good to know that I'm not alone. Every other background seems fine. Same thing happens with the gallery background when the only image in the folder is a pitch black one, right?

Well all those images render fine in other applications on the phone so its the lockscreen wallpaper 'setter' wich messes it up I think.
Ya, I'm pretty sure too that that is the case...
I have a black lockscreen and it looks great.
I have noticed that when I have 'screen filter' app running, it dims the foreground but causes the background to do the 'grey' thing.
I have most of the auto display stuff turned off (auto brightness, auto adjust screen power)

That guy mentions that his blacks aren't completely black. Our problem here is that setting a completely black image as the lockscreen leads to a messed pattern with greyish/pinkish stripes...
edit ; same thing occurs on mine. I even created two black background non compressed, 24 bit, one even with 285 dpi.. both show the wierd little gray stripes on lock screen. only notice it in very dim light by the way and even then if i look very close.
this is what i use. both screens look black as night.

Use the darker red "sun" wallpaper gallery image - awesome on mine!
I have the same problem...
Has anyone tried restoring?
I set a black image and got the very dark grey bars others have described. However, I reset it to the original wallpaper and noticed that the white-ish parts of my background has bars as well! Just not as noticeable, and its only on the lock screen.
This is my background picture by the way:
http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/details/2754/yellow_autumn.html
There seems to be some kind of gradient over the image on the lock screen - I'm just using the default for now, but if you set the default as your normal background as well as lock background, there's quite a difference. Could it be this gradient which is causing the issue with pure black backgrounds?
I'm using widget locker and here is my lockscreen with the homescreen wall paper which uses solid black background color
I am having the same issue. I just noticed it yesterday. I really thought it had something to do with the phone going below the minimum brightness it was designed for, but if you look at the notification bar it's still a clean black.
My guess is the phone is compressing the lockscreen wallpaper to save memory.

Can people try WL (If you've purchased it) and see if it does the job?
Well, I suppose I'm not the first, but still I hope this is fixed. There are parts of system especially menus and gradients which are rendered terribly. This is a software bug, since everywhere else, colours are rendered fine. I have screenshots attached. Is there a fix for this? Thanks

You are really complaining about the color of icons on system menus?

no, if you look closely at the grey background on system menus you will notice it isnt a flat or evenly graded colour, down the middle is a line, the best way i can think of to describe it is its like an oil spot on a dark shirt, its not always noticeable but its there.
Exactly, thanks!

Seconded! And I was beginnig to think there was something wrong with my device. Yesterday I noticed a slight discoloration when looking closely at the popu menu backgrounds (like the one when you attempt to install a downloaded apk file). It appears in the right part of the box. It looks a bit like a hand, a splash of liquid but with sharp edges. When I rotate the screen horizontally the shape keeps being rendered in the same part of the menu and retains its shape. Curiously enough when I examined menus in other parts of the OS the pattern was different, more blockish. I think it will be hard to photograph so check your tablets guys. The screen on my device is otherwise fine so it must be software related.
I don't recognize what menu you are on, but on mine settings/apps shows no background blur like that. Manual lighting, 50 percent.

For anyone willing to take a look, below are ID's for images uploaded to imgur.com (because of low postcount I cannot post direct links) - a screenshot of the install dialogue and one of the screen brightness.

It's export menu in dropbox. In that link, it was shot in I think, notification ringtone menu.
Good to see Google is fixing it.

No fair blaming Google for an app problem. There are a million ways Dropbox could have messed that up.
Can you give me an instance that only involves Google apps? Like maybe in Google drive?

Any system dialog box. Go to settings and set a "notification tone" in the dialog box where you select the sound you can see horrible artifacts that look like dark gray mountains
That and set any gray gradient as a wallpaper and you'll see horrible banding

OK... I went to Settings / Sound / Default Notification.
Then it gives me a choice of apps to use to browse to a sound. I chose Media Storage (the only Google one).
Now I have a list of tones and checkboxes, with a gray background. Brightness manual, 50%.
Holding the screen straight on, and tilting to look straight across I see no gradient or artifacts at any angle. Amazing off-axis range...
Anything else I can try, or is my device just "different"?
I have those gradients too, funny its not reproducible on all devices

Stock 4.2.
Not currently rooted - root makes multi-user unusable for me. Root Manager has it "temporarily unrooted".
I don't have a gradient background to try. That notifications panel is an even gray. No gradient.
Bump up the brightness to 100% you will surely see it if it is there. I just updated to 4.2.1 and it is still here. This update in fact broke my Android Beam, I can no longer send images from my Nexus S to Nexus 7 like I could on 4.2

Just noticed, to the people who experience lag when scrolling through a message thread of one of your contacts - on my gs3 I've found that if I set the background colour of the messages to one of the 'default' ones, rather than selecting my own image, it goes away.
May be this is just an eccentricity of my particular handset but it's worth having a go if you have a custom background of any kind as I find the lag has totally gone now that I've set it to one of the 'stock' background options.
Bloody annoying though.....I specifically wanted my custom black background so as to match the colour co-ordination of everything else in messages. Nevermind...

Noticed this a while back too. Ridiculous lol
This is kind of hard to explain but whenever I use my phone, no matter what app is open, or when I'm on the homescreen, some apps kind of show transparently on my display like it almost looks like the current app being used is translucent that I can see the other app? I can't really explain this properly. Screenshots don't show what I'm talking about.
It shows up at the very sides and top portion of the screen. It also shows when I bring down my notification shade. The grey part at the top which is supposed to be completely grey, still shows the battery icon, time, notification icons, signals, Wi-Fi indicator, etc. but very translucent. As if the grey quick toggles thing is translucent.
Again, screenshots dont capture the thingy. So I'm sure it's an issue and not intentional by Motorola.
It's screen burn issue. It has been discussed numerous times check through the forum for more help.

Install this, set on 5% black and after a while the burn images are gone. (keep the app on all the time, the one that I linked to is the one with less battery usage, from the 4 I tested)

As mentioned above by @Gero71 , use the app or visit the service center and ask them for a display replacement. That would be a permanent fix hopefully. :good:

I've seen some people complaining about the same issue after they've replaced their screens. It will still occur no matter what.
And, the app you're making me install, is just a screen filter. I use it all the time. Lowering the brightness doesn't fix the screen burn. It just makes it less prominent. But it is still there.
