Exchange Services massive battery drain - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
Just upgraded my GNex for a N4. I've added the same email accounts as I had on the GNex but I'm suffering appalling battery life with the "Exchange Services" service being responsible for 44% of battery use on my N4. I've searched around and it seems quite a common thing for some people, but not necessarily with the N4.
Has anyone else had this on their N4 specifically? I've tried removing/adding the Exchange account, clearing the cache etc, but I still seem to have the issue. It's a real pain for me as I really rely on this functionality. All the suggestions I've read on other forums haven't worked so far :crying:

I've had it on my Nexus on AOKP, but goes away after deleting the account, reboot, then recreating the account. Kinda random, but has happened more than once over the last few months...

Thanks very much for your suggestion. I have given it a try and unfortunately it hasn't worked for me

Had this happen on various nexus or cm builds across various devices. It is kinda random. Deleting the account and refracting it does not help.

Just an update to this:
I've suffered this issue since I got the phone. However, 2 days ago, "Maps" started to be use as much battery time as "Exchange Services".
Today however, "Exchange Services" and "Maps" are insignificant in terms of battery use. In fact, I've been on battery power for 8 hours and I'm at 80% battery remaining - which is incredible considering my recent experience. I'm hoping that something has finally sorted itself out and this is how it will continue.
I'll report back if things change.
VERY happy at the moment as this was rendering the phone as almost unusable. Fingers crossed it's sorted.

OK, it's been a couple of weeks now so I thought I'd do another update - which can effectively close this off for me.
Since Exchange Services sorted itself out, I've not had any re-occurrence of the issues I had before. I've even changed the Exchange settings to pull all email/calendar etc rather than just a small time limited slice. It seems like it's fixed for good (touch wood).
In fact, even with push email activated (and plenty of other syncing going on), my phone currently stands at:
7h 11m on battery and 81% left - very impressive I think (although I have spent most of today on WIFI which will help).

Hrmm...I think my S3 is going back to ATT.

I've tried to resolve each issue individually and have done my best to see if I could make this one work but5 this is getting ridiculous. Yesterday was the last straw.
Friday I had problems with the gps. It showed me about 3 blocks from where I really was and could not figure out what direction I was traveling. At one point it actually showed that I was going in the opposite direction I was really driving. I decided to give it another shot yesterday on a drive down to the keys. I was on US1 in a convertible with the top down, clear view of the sky and driving about 60mph. The gps using both Maps and ATT navigator showed me about 300 or 400 yards off the road and in the freakin water!!!!
And the GPS kept losing a lock on the sats.
Then when I went to sleep I had about 75% battery left. I woke up 3 hours later and it was down to 15%. I had nothing running, made sure the gps was off and the apps were closed, juice defender was on, power save mode was on, and still the thing burned through 60% of the battery life in 3 hours.
Add that to my wifi disconnect/reconnect issues and the communication error when checking for software updates (tried through wifi and through 4G and same thing on both) and I think I'm going to take advantage of the exchange period and get a new phone next week. This is ridiculous.
Juice defender is part of your problem.
butter and jelly please...
Yes screw juice defender!
You have a defective phone, go get another S III.
lol....now this morning it's not even being recognized by my PC. I connected it so I could take some pictures I took last night off of it and it's not even being recognized.
Yeah you got a lemon just take the phone back to at&t if you got it from a company owned store and your within your 30 days then they will just swap it out for you if you got it from a 3rd party like a best buy or a amazon then obviously you would follow their return and exchange policy, oh and ditch juice defender it doesn't work well with Ics at all do a search on the topic and you will see ( gingerbread yes, Ics its a no go).

Seeing that you'd probably be factory resetting before returning I'd do that and just see if the issues continue. If so then return promptly. It could be any number of apps screwing with battery life and who knows juice def could be messing with GPS and wifi. Worth a shot. Factory reset and try some out without any apps added

seeing how the majority of people arent having these issues at all id say its safe to say you just have a defective phone so you should just exchange it for a new one...

I bought it through ATT customer service by phone. I had an online chat with a tech last week about the battery and wifi issues and he suggested I take it to a store and they would exchange it for me. I tried to fix the issues so I wouldn't have to do that but now after the gps issue and last night's 60% in 3 hour while asleep problem, it's going back. Hopefully the store will exchange it without any problem.
I have Juice Defender Ultimate and Power Save Mode on and use my navigation almost every day and never had any issues. Sounds like a defective phone.

I really think those are apps that are past their prime. I wouldn't put any of that junk on a new phone.

I thought the same but if you're a smartphone power user and want a full days use WITH 4 to 5 hours of screen time you need Juice Defender. I'm always on the go and started to leave the iPad at home because this phone with the right power saving apps can take the distance. I couldn't even do that with my Galaxy Note. Samsung S3 does.

I've had some bad battery days. Get something like SystemPanel that will let you see the historical cpu usage of system processes. I'll bet you a dollar that gsiff_daemon is running amok and killing your battery. A reboot will fix it but it will probably come back. I haven't found the pattern yet but I have noticed that the phone gets very warm, so I'm thinking that it may be somehow related to my signal strength.

Anyone else having partial wakelocks/worse battery life after JB OTA?

Just wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone happens to be getting a lot of partial wakelocks without screen on or if your overall battery life has decreased since installing the 4.1.1 OTA. When I first purchased the phone, I had very very few incidents under my battery info where I would have a session awake without the screen on. Post update, seems like I've got a ton of really small wakes with no screen activity. I have turned off Google Now and every GPS/Location setting I could find. Downloaded Better Battery Stats today so I'm going to see if I can get some better info on what's going on, new to the program though and I don't understand most of the info that it reads.
Prior to the update, letting my phone sit overnight I would maybe see a 3 or 4% drop over the course of say six or seven hours. Now I'm seeing a 3 to 4% drop in battery per hour, more if I'm actively using the phone. I'm going to do more testing, specifically overnight to see how it fairs. Just wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone else is experiencing any of these issues.

I am noticing the same thing. Don't know the cause. Keep sync off all day.

Im getting the fast dormancy symptom again... no matter what i tried I cant fix it... always connecting as HSPDA+ even if im not using......anyone got any ideas?
Hmm, might try a factory reset and not installing any apps at all and seeing how it fairs. By chance, do you guys have any of the stock bloatware apps disabled? Not rooted/Frozen, but just disabled via the apps menu? Wondering if perhaps disabling any of them might be a trigger.

Yea i'm getting that. I'm using 13% overnight now vs like 4% before. Not sure about the wakelocks though.
Some random things I've noticed are the blur widget resets itself alot. And the transition to the settings window on the left is laggy. How would one revert back to ICS? Google Now is not that worth it to me and the phone was smooth enough before. I'd take the battery life over the new features.
I did buy a second Razr M for my girlfriend that's still on ICS. I guess I can do a side by side compare this weekend.
I am loving the update.. only issue so far is fire fox crashing..no battery issues. Must be settings guys..

i don't think it is setting i have all my syncs to manual, and i have been noticing a lot worse battery life since the update i would have 18+ hours or so off charger with pretty heavy texting / game / some voice calls. Now i'm not getting close to that. I just disabled the fast dormancy service to see if that helps any, ill post back results
Just did a factory reset today, I'm not going to disable any of the bloatware this time, and I only installed BetterBatteryStats as well as updated all the default apps in the Play Store. Going to see if I get any wakelocks this time around.
Last night, after a period of 6 hours, I had over an hours worth of partial wakelocks from AlarmManager (subheading Phone).
-Matt :good:
I disabled Google Now and my phone used 7% battery over 6 and a half hours. A little bit better.
A factory reset (annoying as it is) helped me considerably. My phone was also seriously laggy before the reset...slow like my old DX on GB, much worse than factory ICS. It finally feels smooth now, like JB should.
Still seeing a lot more wakelocks than on ICS, but it doesn't seem to be draining the battery like it was before the reset. I also removed or disabled a couple of apps that seemed to be serious offenders (Accuweather was one).
Did a reset on mine as well and did not restore from Google backup. Still seeing wakelocks, but as someone noted earlier they don't seem to be draining the battery too much. With that said, the battery does still seem to tick down much faster than on ICS. One thing I did find that helped, although honestly it's not really a solution, is turning off data use when I'm out and about just answering texts and such. If I have data/wifi disabled, I'm getting closer to the battery life that ICS was giving, but then again who wants to go around having to toggle data on and off every time you want to look something up.
-Matt
Is maps showing up on your battery stats and you're not using it? If so, simply open the application. It should say "updated to the latest version" or something like that. If this is happening, this will solve your battery problems.
Happened on my Galaxy Nexus and was happening initially for this phone too. Hope this helps someone.
Modem Fast Dormancy Monitor Service Not Responding.
Me and my wife both updated to KitKat on our Razr M's. I like it so far. The pop up about modem fast dormancy bothers both of use. When you look under battery, it uses more battery than other apps. I force stop it, reboot and it comes right back. A chat on Motorola web site sugested to wipe partition cache. The link that was provide gives the wrong instructions. KitKat using the power and volume keys has changed. They forgot to tell some people. That didn't work! I sent a long email to Motorola telling them that someone messed up or they did this for a reason! I guess if you get mad enough you'll just buy a newer phone. If that one thing is fixed, we would both be happy. The white background in text take some getting use to also. I hope Motorola will help us, but I kind of think Razr M's will be considered OLD! They are betting we will junk them for a new model.

[Q] Battery drain, or is it normal?

I got nexus maybe a week ago, and I had a huge battery problem ever since...
Is this normal?
I have about 3hrs of screen time, data always on, 3g network (very good signal in my area), I only sync contacts (I had to turn everything else off), my brightness is set to auto.
Wifi off, GPS off, network location is on though (I use Google Now).
I turned live wallpaper off, but no effect, I also updated play store (seen that helped some people) and still no effect, I removed skype (that helped a bit, but it is still not ebough to get me throughout the day)
Everything stock, not rooted...
I really love this phone, but have a big problem with the battery
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
3 hours of screen on time with data on all the time is actually pretty good.
What were you doing during the 3 hours of SOT?
looks fine
i don't use google now, and get 3 hours despite that im using cm10.1 with harsh undervolted kernel
you're doing better than me
Man.... I was really hoping for this to be horrible
Internet browsing, top eleven (online game), reading a book. (Third over 2hrs).
I guess I am gonna have to buy the power bank, and the wireless charger.
I was just used to better battery life, but I had 2 batteries for my old phone, and I used my tablet much more.
Thanks guys
EDIT:
Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention messaging and emails....

That looks normal for a stock n4. Since your phone is still quite new, give it some time to settle in. There is a forum that teaches you how to reflash stock ROM which could help a bit with battery. I would recommend you get it rooted, and install a custom kernel. I am personally using franco r111, but there are many other options out there. Good luck.

Indeed. You can see this yourself within BBS (or other similar applications) by changed the point at which you wish to view statistics. For example, set it to list all events since the device was booted and it will show up. Now change this to only view events since the device was last unplugged off the charger. Now it's no longer there and since it's only happening while the device is charging, it's nothing to worry over.
I haven't researched what this service is though, but combined with the logic of what I started and what NervGaz said (awesome name the easy), I'm certain that it isn't having any ill effect on battery like all. I started monitoring battery consumption again street the OTA KitKat update because of several complaints I read about and was trying to help then out as MANY of them were suggesting just to do a factory reset and I had jump and say something because a factory reset is a drastic last measure attempt and quite honestly told them that a reset won't help a thing since they will go back to the same habits as before, meaning installing the same battery sucking applications (*cough* Facebook) or have apps such that set to sync all the time, etc.
Even if it was an issue brought on by a bad KitKat installation, the phone can always be fixed (with the knowledge i guess) without resorting to a factory reset. I've never had to perform one on my life, even now using my unrooted replacements G2. Never got around to rooting this one and also currently using apps which require me to remain unrooted. Now, being that I'm unrooted now, there could be the small chance of a system file getting corrupted etc that I wouldn't be able to fix, but if that happened I'd just root, fix the issue, and unroot.
Kind of went of track there, most likely due to the fact that performing a factory reset is always thrown around as the first step in trying to solve any issue on the phone. In rare cases like a corrupted file in a directory you can't access and you don't want to out can't root your phone, then yes. The Verizon telephone service people (I don't like giving them a title...some are very good at what they do but...we won't go there) are famously guilty for using resets the magic portion that cures all ailments.
Anyways, the point that I was trying to make before going on that rant was those posts on the other forum was what prompted me to investigate battery concerns, because from what I thought, KitKat was supposed to improve on battery consumption by (no clue the accuracy that numbers as I don't have an official source) up to 20%.
On KitKat I've been getting around 5-6 hours of battery life. So far I'm at 37% battery left, with 4 hours and 17 minutes since being unplugged with an estimated 1 hour and 57 minutes left. Doesn't sound very good does it for the average G2 does it? Not until you realize screen on time has been 4 hours and 6 minutes, with my main activities being surfing forums and typing a LOT as well as some time dedicated to my favorite mobile game at the moment which also happens to use more battery than ant other game I've played...Avabel Online (IgN is Styrael if anyone plays - lvl 64 gunslinger)
I haven't run across anything out of the ordinary yet when it comes to battery life but kids still early. Sorry for the long post there, I think I'll get back to Avabel. I hope the 100% exp, jexp (job experience), and drop rare bonuses are still in effect.

[Q] Google Play Services Battery Drain

Hello all, I recently purchased an S5 for myself and my wife on T-Mobile. Our phones are set up almost exactly the same. We both have two gmail accounts on our phones. One of which is our "main" account, and another that's just set to sync gmail. Her accounts are not the same two as mine, it's more like we each have our own main gmail, and kind of a junk gmail account.
Her phone is getting better much better battery than mine.
When checking battery usage stats, google play services is at the top of my list all the time.
Keep in mind, the conditions over the weekend for our phones was almost identical. Very few calls, we were at home on wifi, and out on cell data pretty much the same amount of time.
I've turned off location reporting and history for google now to see if that helps. But I've checked, and my wife's has been on the same as mine the whole time.
I'm wondering if there's something obvious I'm overlooking, maybe a setting for google now or maps or syncing.
Is there anything I can do to track down which service or setting is draining my battery. I'm not rooted...
Any tips/ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Have you got Skype installed? If so uninstall it, I had the same issue and could just get my phone through a whole day! Read about a Skype and kitkat issue and now 10 hours in I have 77% battery left

Nope, no Skype. But so far turning off location reporting in Google now seems to be helping.
Kind of a lame fix seeing my wife doesn't have a problem. Maybe I've got something different linked to my account, like some location it's searching for. Who knows, lol
