lost 16gb? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a 32gb yesterday and it was 32gb..after today I just realize that my size capacity has went to 16 GB...for example...after factory reseting it shows up as free space of 13gb... All I did was flash userdata. IMG and cache.img with cwm recovery. Is there any way of fixing this?

Your sure you got a 32gb?

The things you've flashed might of had the partitioning scheme in-mind of a 16GB device (which would mean the other 16GB would be unpartitioned and invisible.
You could probably try seeing if there are specific 32GB files you can flash though.

I have this EXACT same problem and I've been busting my a** off trying to find a solution to it. I did the same as you and flashed userdata.img and cache.img after a boot loop when I unlocked the bootloader (I did factory reset but it didn't have any impact and everything I tried didn't work, including re flashing the stock image). I've looked around on Google alot and was contemplating posting too but thought I'd do some more research first cause I had a similar problem on my HTC One X. Some solutions state deleting 'lost.dir' or the lost+found folder might help but this didn't work for me. 16gb has just vanished =(

Yeah...I can't do anything....I tried almost everything

I'm going to try and full wipe again, from within the settings. If that doesn't work, I might full wipe from recovery and if that doesn't work I might try to re flash the user data and cache.img. Just can't test it yet cause I set up all my data yesterday and I can't back it up since Macs don't read 4.2 devices natively argh.

I know n7 owners had this problem. Some 32gb owners flashed the 16gb n7 image and it repartitioned the tablet to 16 gb, I haven't looked for a fix but that may be a good place to start.

Haha that's great to hear buddy. I know it's probably too late to ask now cause you have probably started to re download your apps and settings but do you think just flashing user data would work? The flashall doesn't work for me for some reason on my friend's mac.

No I don't think so. Its supposed to reformat the user data.IMG position. Try using a windows computer or Linux computer.

Would love to do that on my Windows computer but atm I don't have access to one cause my laptop broke just a couple of weeks back. I may try to move the stock rom to my Nexus and flash it. Will see how that goes if full wiping doesn't work. Thanks bud and glad to hear your Nexus 10 is back to normal

I think it will work on the Mac. U got to give it root permission so do sudo then the flash-all script. Make sure they're all in the same folder. In order to run it with sudo you should type sudo then drag the script into the terminal and enter. I'm not sure though if this is how you do it on Mac though

would you mind clarifying this? Maybe a step-by-step tutorial on how to fix this issue? And how not to do i (prevent it)? I'm about to root my 32gb and now I'm worried I'll flash a 16gb image or something, is that how it happened?

Glad you fixed it, but any idea what caused it so the rest of us can avoid the pain?

Total storage cut in half after unlocking bootloader!

Hi all,
I have a 16GB Nexus 4 and I just finished unlocking my bootloader and flashing CWM. After doing so, my total space in storage went from 12-something GB to 5.67GB. While Googling to find the issue it looks like this is the amount available to the 8GB Nexus 4s. I definitely have a 16GB and it had way more than this total before unlocking.
Here were the steps I took:
1) Full backup w/ ADB using: adb backup -apk -shared -all -f C:\Backups\Nexus4.ab
2) Unlock bootloader
3) Flash CWM
4) In CWM, wipe data and cache (stuck at "X" problem)
5) Restore with adb restore
No clue what happened. Any thoughts?

[Q] Nexus 4 model, about storage capacity

Hi, how will I be able to know which variant (8gb or 16 gb) my nexus 4 is?
Before rooting, I think my total storage capacity is 12gb+ (I actually can't remember definitely).
Then I unlocked the bootloader and tried to flash, I was stuck in the X logo, I restarted, then I was stuck in the google logo (unlocked bootloader at this point.) I had backed up my apps and sdcard via adb.
I was stuck, so I downloaded a factory image and reflashed my device. Then I rooted it. I was done. SU installed, and it was rooted. I then reinstalled my app settings via adb again, but not the sdcard.
after sometime, putting music, movies and apps, I noticed that my device only had a total of 5.66GB.
I bought it 2nd hand, BTW.
So what happened? Now, I just want to confirm really how much storage I have so I can get back my money if this was indeed an 8gb version instead of 16gb. Any ideas?
Thanks!
All of the media you put onto your Nexus 4 takes up room. How many movies did you put? How many songs? If you feel that there is something wrong with the amount if storage available, then you can try formatting your SD.
I also remember that there's a bug on 16GB models to only show 8GB.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
there is a similar issue that occurs with the nexus 7. i remember it was talked about before in some threads. after flashing the images, did you do a factory reset or clear data in recovery? this seems to have the issue fixed. some units show up as 8gb after a reflash however a reset thru settings or clear data fixes this.
Do what thephantom said. Recovery must be stock though, not custom. If you need more help. I made a little how-to guide a couple months ago for this very problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35119185#post35119185
thank you guys... I'm relieved that it is a bug, I hope it is a bug in my case... One question though, do you suggest back up with adb + sdcard or titanium? my previous settings were not backed up using adb cmd (I'm not sure though, since I didn't push back the sd backup)

[Q] 6gb avilable on the 32gb model after flashing android 4.3

2 days ago i flashed android 4.3 on my nexus 7, after using it for a while i noticed that the total space is 6.02 gb on my 32gb model.
i looked for this problem online and found someone who the same thing happened to him while flashing 4.2.2.
the answer was to wipe everything, data and internal storage. so i did it and the same problem repeated , i flashed android 4.2.2 back but the same thing happened. how can i solve it?
Follow the instructions in this thread, post #10. It will fix you right up. It is the proper commands to flash through fastboot that will get the memory right.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776860
Of course, change the bootloader and system image versions to correspond to the 4.3 values. Eg 4.23.

Actually, it wont. It is an issue that can happen when fastboot incorrectly formats the system and gives it the wrong size, making the remaining unusable. Recovery will read it incorrectly also, and only format the space marked as useable. Re-doing by using the correct fastboot commands is really the only way to get the whole thing back to useable and active.

Where did you download the factory image for the Nexus 4? I got one form Google and it seems that the files are name incorrectly. I get a message saying the bootloader is incorrect makoz20i (should be makoz30d). Just need a reliable factory image to flash my N4.
no need to wipe all data, just wipe cache on stock recovery.
I also have same problems. My Nexus 4 16Gb, after installing kitkat KRT16S via fastboot with the factory image download from google then become nexus 4 8Gb??? I don't know what happens ?
I also have this problem - 16gb N4 now showing as only 8gb. Any fixes out there (that don't involve wiping/factory reset)? Thanks
Try wiping cache first. If that doesn't work, factory reset is your only choice.
I just noticed mine is doing the same thing...says 5.67 for total space. I had issues when I tried to flash the update, so I ended up going back completely to stock. Then about 15 minutes later, I received the notification to update to 4.4 which I did. So I didn't even flash my update. It was the normal Nexus 4 update procedure.
Update: I did a factory reset and now my phone says it has 19.92 total space. So, the factory reset fixes it. Hopefully there will be a less drastic solution to this issue at some point.
I am having a similar problem after downloading 4.4 custom rom. Tried resetting n flashing other Roms and it stays the same. Missing a lot of space here, please help?

Help.confuse? 8gb or 16gb

My friend gave me his nexus 4 and never told me that the fone was rooted and its capacity..so now im confused, i check the custom recovery installed by pressing power+vol down and some sort of lying android logo shows and ask me what to do and at the bottom of the screen shows 'mako' thing..so now i check the unit how much memory does this phone has after restoring it thru recovery mode..i wipe cache aswell..so now i go straight to the settings and check it but it only shows 5.67gb total internl storage and 2.65gb free of space which is not normal to atleast 8gb nexus 4 has around 6gb less than 7gb internal and 5gb less than 6gb useable space.so the question is, how can i determine whether my fone is 16gb or 8gb even that i already had rooted it and i think he also put a custom rom aswell. i already search it and shows that some other nexus users getting the same problem or error as mine.btw im at kitkat 4.4 update

Only way I know to make sure is to format the data partition.. Can do this in custom recovery or fastboot OEM lock/unlock...warning you will lose all data, so backup.
Sometimes 16GB GB n4's get formatted incorrectly when upgrading os.
16GB should have @12GB free space and 8GB ones @5.7GB.

Ill try that one..that 5.7gb shows only in total internal memory and not the free space.and i notice also that theres alot of junks that when i did restore it thru recovery they were still there thats why they keep on eating up my space so i just did manually deleted form their folder using file manager..
When you boot into the bootloader using volume down+power you'll find a couple of informations at the bottom. One line tells you whether its the 8 or 16gb model.
Also some files on your storage (eg backups from recovery) may lead to faulty numbers in the storage section of the phones settings.

No. Software and hardware is the same, they just differ in the capacity of the storage.
Remember that your 8gb get reduced by the space needed for the system. 8gb doesn't mean you have 8gb free for usage. It means you have 8gb minus the OS, cache partitions, data partition. About 5gb should remain for generic storage such as pictures, music, video etc if I'm not mistaken.

In any case, if you're getting a used phone from someone else you're always better of wiping it completely and setting it up from scratch.

Lol damn dude you formatted everything? You really need to read the stickied posts. They are prerequisite reading.
Anyway, your first screen shot says 8GB.
When you format everything (I assume you formatted each partition), you lose everything stored on it. Everything. The OS is gone.
But all you have to do is install a factory ROM from adb or something similar. Let me go do a quick search and I'll be back.
Also, know that this isn't the phone or OS's fault. You went rogue and started doing stuff you didn't understand the consequences of. It happens, but it's nothing that can't be fixed.
EDIT: Here you go. Read through this guide. I can't reiterate this enough: read carefully and read to understand. This isn't literature class. You need to know what every sentence is telling you to do.
Basic summary: download 4.4.1 ROM for Nexus 4 and make damn sure you download the one for the Nexus 4 (mako). Install Android SDK. Boot into recovery. Specifics on these steps are located in that article. You will need to follow the link on how to sideload. Don't worry if you don't know what these words mean. The link is love. The link is life. It's written such that a young child could do it without assistance from an adult.

This is definitely assigning fault to the wrong party. Root isn't why you reformatted your storage and lost everything. It's because you didn't use Google to search for any of these answers. You could have solved your original problem by simply searching "How to tell nexus 4 8GB or 16GB."
It's possible that the internal storage was improperly formatted during a ROM flash, but it wasn't. I still can't understand what the hell your original post says, but I'm pretty sure you just misinterpreted how much space would be free.
The solution to this is to FIRST acquire the ROM you want and know where it's located in your phone's storage. THEN format the offending partitions or flash a zip or whatever you need to do to fix the problem (I don't know specifics since I've not needed it, but I'm sure I could find it with Google). THEN you flash your 4.4.1 ROM and if you go, never to return.
So in case you run into any problems with your car, I highly recommend against trying to fix it yourself. It doesn't sound like you'd be very successful. If you do, you'll probably end up with a hunk of scrap metal or a far more expensive repair job.
So i was planning to start all over form scratch..like everyone else is suggesting.so i have a little question..
From 4.4 kitakat and im planning to flash a stock rom 4.2.2 downloaded from google,is it possible?or do i need to stick to 4.4 like what i already had before this things happen..?
I was actually reffering only to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312,maybe i think the most easy way to flash stock.

Get the 4.4 factory image, flash that. Either get the 4.4.1 update ota or download the ota and flash it.

8gb or 16gb???
I'm also a bit confused on what Nexus 4 variant I have. In AnTuTu, I have the following info:
Storage-Internal SD Card; 5503.5/5803.1 MB (5.37/5.66 GB)
In Fastboot Mode, I have the following info:
Product Name- MAKO
Variant- MAKO 16GB
I've tried different "fixes" and my internal storage always ends up with 5.67GBs. So, what am I to believe my phone should have?
I heard there's a bug in nexus kikat update about shrinking storage issues.u better stick to what fastboot details has. U may want to try do a data format and clearing cache to resolve the issue.
