thought i would inject some helpful spam here for those lookking to tinker with the lapdock and their Razr HD/Maxx. The lapdock is avaliable at Radio Shack at its discontinued price of $9.97. I know because i work there and i have bout 3 of them. They are in short supply so be savvy and call up a store and ask the manager if they have sku 1706310 in stock. And if not, ask if any other RS's in the area have any in stock.
Other posts have mentioned the dock working in mirror mode + keyboard/mouse and i can confirm. So Good luck/Happy hunting
Too bad I do not live in the US... I have an original Atrix Lapdock but the position of the HDMI and Micro USB is reversed so that the new generations cannot dock with the previous accessories.

Yes, but a quick search will show you instructions on how to swap the ports (some plastic removal is necessary) so you can use with Razr HD.
Thanks for pointing that out!! I just made that and the original atrix lapdock works wonderfully with the RAZR HD. Does look with good resolution.

Yes once you open the plastic, you will need an exacto knife to cut proper spacing but all that is required otherwise is to switch each both 180 degrees
so i just put mine in my Bionic lapdock which fits perfectly but without the software that powered it it is not very useful and not full screen.
what are you guys doing with it?
Picked one up for $9.97.
I'll do a quick review a bit later... after the mod.

I can't find 'em for less than $90 shipped on ebay, access to super-deals in Canada is limited, I guess. Anyone got a spare one for sale?
I have an original ATRIX 4G Lapdock that I have working with my Maxx HD. It works but has the downside of not upping the screen resolution. It is equivalent to using 640x480 on your desktop monitor. As a result of this it'll be collecting dust for me for the foreseeable future.

yeah i have a bionic version and it fits perfectly with no alterations but not much you can do with it with low resolution. maybe the linux distros on a root device might come in handy.
maybe someone can figure out a way to make it useful?

The resolution of the lapdock is: 1366x768 - 60Hz <-- Motorola Atrix 4G Lapdock
By contrast, the DefyHD is 1280x720 already. So you wouldn't be losing much by just hdmi mirroring.

I went the quick and dirty route for modding it.
Flip the phone stand up as though you were going to put the phone in it.
Remove the rubber caps on the sides of the stand to expose the screws. (See attached image)
Remove the screws.
I decided that I would just take the USB and HDMI connectors and expose them rather than flip them around (I had an OG Razr that wouldn't work on the stand).
If you choose to go my route I suggest cutting a corner off the stand so that the cables can come out of it for use on pretty much any phone regardless of connector configuration.
If not, adjust the seating of the connectors to the necessary positioning for your phone.
Close everything back up and replace the screws.

Basically, the issue is tablet vs phone dpi, which isn't easily swapped, but it's being worked on.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1876790&page=9
One guy has created a script that will swap from 240dpi (phone) to 120dpi (tablet) essentially quadrupling the screen real estate. This is on the Atrix, however, and I'm not sure what the default dpi is for the RazrHD but it's progress that might benefit us as well.
There are some apps that will change dpi for rooted devices so I think that this script @EdwardN is referencing could work out well

I have an extra one, unfortunately all the quotes for shipping from the US to start at $50.
I just bit the bullet and spend the $ to get a lapdock from ebay. I got the Bionic version, so it just needed a little work with a needlefile so the Razr HD would sit down on the connectors properly.
Setting overscan to max in settings (stock 4.0.4) makes it full screen. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get it to do anything other than mirror mode. Now that I have the thing I'm going to play around with settings a bit more and see if I can get it to be more functional...

Hey Guys,
I have had this idea for a while and just got around to making some concept renders of a tablet that the EVO would dock into.
This 10.1" tablet would work only when the EVO is docked in it (a la Atrix 4G). The tablet would utilize the camera, headphone jack and processor of the EVO 4G, while using the mini HDMI and USB ports to transmit data and images. There is an internal battery, front facing camera, volume rocker, mini HDMI, and mini USB port on the tablet to make using the device easier.
Advantages of a tablet dock:
-Less expensive (after phone is purchased) than a standalone tablet
-Real integration of phone and tablet (contacts, pictures, apps etc)
-Keeping bulk to one side reduces the torque on the wrist and makes the tablet seem lighter
-Using existing phone to power the tablet reduces the amount of internal components, reducing the thickness of the majority of the tablet
-Uses phone service instead of a separate data plan
Disadvantages:
-Dependant on phone specs (CPU, WiMAX, etc)
-Not compatible with other phones (although I think Google should standardize phone connections and locations)
I would love feedback and suggestions, and keep in mind this is a first gen concept. I will be updating this based on what people have to think.
I have created a sliding dock for my phone which holds the phone firmly in place and connects HDMI and USB in a sliding case (Sedio Innocase with HTC Media Dock modified to fit). This will be used in the prototype tablet.
Enjoy!
Edit: Here's the Atrix 4G dock, as mentioned above:
http://www.cellphonenews.com/wp-content/uploads/cc003c27Laptop-Dock.jpg
And here are multi-touch screen overlays, which I believe work over USB
http://www.22miles.com/hardware/multi-touch-hardware
edited renders to change orientation of the phone.
Added images of dock prototype
wow, this looks ridiculously amazing!!
Holy crap! I was literally imagining something exactly like this last week. Awesome work!

Another cool thing about it, it could run off of the Evo's service. You wouldnt have to get an extra plan to use it.
I'm not sure what the Atrix is, but were you thinking something like the phone in that motorola commercial where the guy is in custody at the airport, and trying to tell the cop that its a phone, AND a computer?
Now, if we can just get the batt issue fixed on our lovely evos; I'm wondering whats needed to power the lcd?

Yeah it would just be an extension of the phone, service and all. The atrix is that phone you mentioned with the laptop dock, but they use a custom linux operating system that boots when the phone is "docked". This could either just mirror the existing OS or could load honeycomb or some other operating system.
This is awesome and all. But again, how will touch inputs work? Has anyone attempted to get clone the screen, via HDMI, to a touchscreen panel and have it work both ways on inputs?
That all happens at the hardware level, PCB, etc., etc.
This is an excellent concept but unless the phone is built with being able to use an EXTERNAL touchscreen it's not going to work.

yeah exactly, just like the Atrix laptop dock.
There's definately room there for three flat batteries between the screen and the and case. If the can fit batteries in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the IPad 2, they can do it here.
Thank for all of the responses, I guess I'll have to make some new renders soon with the phone and different angles to keep up the interest

that's the hardest part about this, and you're entirely right. We need some way of essentially splicing into the EVO 4G's digitizer and pretending that the tablet's touchscreen is the same. That, or we can emulate touch as a mouse (which is enabled on custom ROMS) and send signals via bluetooth, which would be very laggy and battery intensive.
I know that you can buy touch screen overlays for netbooks that enable touch over USB, so there is hope! Unfortunately, these usually are single touch and not very accurate, and they are another layer that needs to be applied to the screen.
I think that if HTC or any large company were to create a tablet like this, they would be able to integrate a solution with a phone the way the Atrix works. Hopefully this becomes a trend!
Sweet idea. I'd love to have this set up. I hope HTC likes it.

My question is about the possibility to mirror android interface thru HDMI or Lapdock kit instead of starting up linux.
As the stock lapdock, the linux is only for web browsing in most of time. If the android interface mirrored to large screen or lapdock kit, we could use android apps through big screen. With the lapdock, we could also use atrix as a tablet w/ BT keyboard, beside it is not a touchscreen.
In light of the quasi-firesale on lapdocks from at&t, I am going to bump this thread.
I know that it is confirmed that the lapdock works as an HDMI monitor, but can anyone confirm whether or not the keyboard/mouse/usb ports work with the phone when it is not set in webtop mode?
For example, would an atrix running CM7 or another rom which lacks webtop support be able to mirror its display (yes, only in portrait mode, for now) and use the USB keyboard mouse?
Thanks!
The Atrix can already portrait mirror on the laptop dock, although the mouse is a but wonky.

I find it much more than a toy. I prefer to carry it around vs. my netbook for several reasons. Bigger battery, bigger screen , instant on for the main part. Mine is heavily hacked, so I can VPN/RDE into the office and/or do a considerable amount of work locally. It is far more than just a browser.
The "landscape mode" is a bit of a misnomer. There is a Linux application that emulates the phone and has all your 'droid applications. When not maximized, you can have it either landscape or portrait, but when maximized (such that the entire screen is droid) it has to be landscape mode else most of the screen is blank. I never use this mode anyway; I somewhat enlarge the standard phone image and that is plenty.
My only real gripes (in case Moto is listening) is that the keyboard should have an extra row (there is plenty of room) and the touchpad needs a scroll region (at least).

Linux is actually always running on your phone, wether you are using the lapdock or not. Android uses the Linux kernel, and the webtop environment is just some additional native linux apps that run under the same kernel that the Dalvik Virtual Machine is running under.

Hello
Just wanted to let you all know that although my Atrix is no longer in use, I have the lapdock lying around.
It is a good piece of hardware and I have been toying with finding a way to embed the actual atrix itself inside the lapdock. However, the real problem there is that there is no use for doing that since the Atrix's native dock functions suck!!! I also considered and toyed with the Raspberry, but its not meant for that.
However I have come across this puppy: FXI Tech Cotton Candy
and my plan is to embed it inside my Lapdock and create something actually useful with that hardware.
The FXI Cotton Candy officially supports GB, ICS and now Ubuntu 12.
For anyone who doesn't know what it is:
"FXI Tech Cotton Candy packs more power in a tiny space. It has a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 as its processor and the quad-core ARM Mali-400MP for graphics. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and WiFi 802.11 b/g/n. On both ends are USB 2.0 and HDMI out connectors and there’s one micro USB 2.0 connector on the side. It has 1GB RAM and a microSD slot for up to 64GB of expandable storage."
Given its size, it easily fits disassembled into the dock connector that rotates on the actual lapdock.
Does this sort of thing interest anyone?
I'll keep you guys posted as my adventures with that continue.
Sounds interesting and would love to see this kind of thing work.
Good look man hope it works for ya

Did you pre-order one?
If not, the likelyhood of you getting one this year is almost zero. They have stopped pre-orders as they have filled up on those, and currently have nobody to do mass production for them. Since this is their situation and they have to find someone to build these units, you most likely won't see any this year, as it takes time to complete all the necessary steps to put a product into production. Your best bet may be one of these to test out your idea:
http://www.mobilenapps.com/articles/2246/20120518/74-mk802-versus-200-fxi-cotton-candy.htm
If you can't get hold of one maybe look into the MK802 PC, you might find that easier to add onto the lapdock too looks like it already has a hdmi and a usb so i think you may just have to buy some extra wires and hook it all up. And it's only $74

Should work perfectly fine... people have shown that you can connect a PS3 to the lapdock. Only question is: will a regular ICS or Ubuntu 12 have the lapdock drivers..

You and Alaq have made me **** bricks. I normally figure stuff like this out early on. It's not until now that I've realized that connecting usb and hdmi ports will make the lapdock a sologig. I knew about it's potential ever since I saw that ps3 video (Either last year or the beginning of this year...), but it wasn't till this month that people started releasing PCs on a stick... But yea it would be amazing for school to have a razr thin laptop that runs smoothly and has 8 hour battery life (probably more because it's no longer charging the phone), and that's why I decided to start on the project (In my sig), I'll release everything when I'm through with it.. I'll have to record everything that I do to the lapdock for you guys...
This one looks really interesting.....in technical side.
But it is not efficient if you compare the price with typical windows netbook
199$ + lapdock price is more expensive than netbook.

Once you get it sorted, could you make a video showing the performance? I love the idea and have been considering making a sort of 'dummy phone' like box to house a raspberry pi but this little a10 stick computer looks like it could be a better option. For me, it would have to run linux as android on a laptop is just wrong as far as I am concerned It looks good, but would not be worth it unless it is faster than webtop imho.

The 4S has HDMI mirroring with a dongle, it could merely use that. Not nearly as good an experience as Android in tablet mode would provide, but it'd be something.

I want one if:
1. Webtop 3.0 is all its cracked up to be in terms of speed compared to current webtop
2. This actually enables webtop mode and not just entertainment center/mirroring
3. It actually works with the Atrix period
4. It costs less than $250
Looking forward to this!! Minus its name
At the end of the day this is where its leading, Moto has abandoned the webtop on ICS and as is Ubuntu is distended to come on the new android's one way or another.
So why not have an all in one interchangeable lapdock for your mobile device?
The spec are changing in the industry every day, even as much as I bash my webtop into a usable Micro Laptop its limited. So why not pay for this device and then look at upgrading when you can without losing the lapdock. I see the netbook market taking a hit if this thing takes off.

i regularly use my laptop to give presentations, and need to connect to a projector via vga.

From all my research i have come to the conclusion that this is not feasible on the nexus 10?
cant beleive such a high ens spec machine cannot support it.

Adapters are cheap stuff. You will need two, though: micro-HDMI to HDMI, and from there, HDMI to VGA.

I feel for you man! At work we have to put up with the worst equipment paid for with ginormous amounts of money.
At my work, the technical coordinator bought a Smartboard, which is a giant touchscreen with a few software extras. It is about a 70" inch screen and has been introduced as the more expensive top model. Naturally, I brought some equipment to take it through a test drive - an hdmi adapter for my Galaxy S3 and some 1080p trailers.
Then came realisation - not only do they connect it via VGA to the presentation pc, it only supports 1366 * 768 max resolution (the S3 would happily output 1080p if supported). Piece Of Crap Deluxe. At least they extended a HDMI cable to where the PC stands, but it doesn't have a suitable graphics adapter. Will still look crappy anway when they eventually upgrade that one. :crying:
