To all people with the N4, I want to ask about the screen.
Does it function like a normal 720p resolution? Do YouTube videos take up the entire screen without black bars? Do games like ShadowGun etc render properly and take the full screen (with the soft keys obviously ).
Thanks
There are very tiny black bars on youtube due to the fact the screen actually has a slightly higher resolution than 720p. However, in practice you don't notice them.
I don't have shadowgun but there are thin black bars (top/bottom) on youtube vids, I expected that though since this isn't a 720p display (1280x720) it's 1280x768.

Hello,
The display has a great resolution and has a wonderful size, but what can we expect from the screen brightness and contrast?
There is a review where the HD is compared to the Iphone 3G and the contrast and brightness of the iphone is even better (colors are stronger). Will the sold blackstone offer a better quality display contrast / brightness?
thx for any reply.
It's not the screen itself in which the IPhone is superior. Both screens (in darker situations) have quite similar brightness/contrast/color strength (looking at the Diamond and an IPhone 3G right now), and the Diamond is a hell of a lot sharper with 3 times the PPI.
But outside, on pictures and in well lit videos, the screen of the Diamond, Pro and HD all become a bit glared because they do not reflect all of the light, like the IPhone's glass screen, or the Blackberry Bold. They pick up some of the light which makes it harder to view the screen which is behind the top plastic layer, hence it looks as if their contrast is worse than that of the IPhone, which is not always the case.
In terms of DPI/PPI the HD will be lower than the Pro/Diamond I'm assuming since the horizontal resolution is the same even though the screen is wider and the vertical resolution is 'only' 160 pixels more in a screen that is a good bit longer than the Pro/Diamond.
Is this 'loss' of DPI/PPI in any way noticeable?
It is noticable, as soon as you stick your face into the screen and have good eyes The PPI is lower yes, but still much higher than say the IPhone (about 2.5 times higher). Since even on the IPhone you hardly notice pixels, the HD screen will still be tight as a drum, print quality for sure. The difference between the HD and the Diamond really is minimal.
Also, the huge screen means you will not be staring at your phone from up close since you have so much more real estate, you can hold it further away. Also I like the fact that the PPI have decreased in the width, because that makes all WinMo user interface bigger which is a plus imo, I really like the Diamond but their statement that you will only need one finger to control everything is BS.
Hi,
I have a little problem with my device, i don't really know if it's a problem or not. On different videos, the black is black, but it has some portions where there are some greenish spots. This is because of the codecs Samsung uses, or is a problem with my phone ? This only happens in dark scenes, overall quality is very impressive and in lighter scenes it works like a charm .
I've noticed when I connect the N10 to my LCD TV with native resolution of 1368x768 using a micro-HDMI to HDMI cable that the image doesn't stretch all the way to the edge of the display. Instead it leaves black bars on either side of probably 75-100 pixels. Does anyone else notice this?? Is there a setting I'm missing to be able to scale the display to fill the entire screen?
Doesn't fill my TV either, the issue, I guess is that it's mirroring so it won't change aspect, that may be different for videos but I haven't tried.

Only way to change the aspect ratio is through your TV. My 50in Philips LCD HD, has settings option to change the display view. Maybe in later firmware updates they may include HDMI options through the device.

Yep, its the aspect ratio. TVs have standardized on 16:9. Android phones and 7" tablets are also 16:9, but since 10" tablets are meant to be held in landscape Google's set the standard to be 16:10 so the soft keys dont take too much of the display away from actual content.
Put in laymans terms, the Nexus has more height per width than your TV, so it either must use black bars, stretch, or crop. Black bars look the best of those options.
Good to know its not just me or my HDMI cable. If this issue is important to you to get resolved, please check out this link and star the issue. With enough votes Google might provide us more options to scale the mirrored output or select a custom resolution in a future release of Android.
It fills your screen when you watch a Movie or TV show though right?
So it is definitely possible for the Nexus to send the signal.
Every review on the interwebz rips on this phone for the non functional blank glass on the top and bottom of this phone. I think it's actually genius. First of all this phone is weighted perfectly. It is not top heavy at all unlike my galaxy s6. Second and really the main reason for them is to hold onto something while watching a video without blocking the speaker.
It's useful in landscape whilst watching videos or gaming but otherwise I'd want them gone. A lot of budget devices had a much better screen to body ratio even before the Pixel was released.
Hi guys, have i got a faulty S8? I purchased it 24 hours ago to upgrade from my S5 , and mainly for a better video camera experience.
The S5 gave superbly sharp 4k video in all but the dimmest lighting conditions, though it was very jerky and showed a lot of rolling shutter jello effects.
So I replaced my S5 with the S8 after reading reviews and watching video samples, but with my S8 set to UHD, i'm finding the video looks more like HD as it's no where near as sharp as the S5
looking at grass and leaves in early evening light, they look mushy, whereas my S5 showed every strand of grass pin sharp.
So could it be i have a bad camera, or is the S8's UHD not as sharp as the S5?
I'm coming from a Note 4, and I feel the same way. I mainly bought my S8 for the great camera that was touted, but my Note 4 had much sharper pictures by far. I will make a post with some side by sides eventually comparing the 2. The S8s pictures are more soft around the edges, not as much detail, and with high contrast areas (such as taking a pictures in a car of the gauges, black with white letters) there is a lot of bleed from the white over the black, like a fuzz. Video also seemed better on the Note 4.
This is very dissapointing as I bought my S8 primarily for a 4k pocket size "camcorder" as my S5, though pin sharp, makes 4k video's too shakey and with constant focus hunting.
The S8 was touted as the best camera ever, next to the Iphone7 and google pixel, so naturally i thought that camera tech should have improved since 3 years ago when i bought the S5.
The biggest improvement is that 4k is much better stabilized and very little rolling shutter, but the image quality is just about the same as FHD, the sharpness if the S5 in 4k video is so sharp that i see every pixel is used individually on my 1080 computer screen, yet the S8 sharpness close up on my 1080 screen, you can see several pixels are blended as one colour, this is on the high detail items, as its very dissapointing if your a 4k fan like myself. I really don't understand why they rated the S8 camera so high for 4k, but having said that, I have seen a few Youtube videos of S8 4k footage and it does look really good, which takes me to my next question, what sensor do we have, as apparantly there are two different sensors fitted to S8 models, a Sony or a Samsung sensor, could it be that one is better than the other?
So i'm guessing theres no point it taking the phone in for repair?
I will try and upload comparison screenshots if this site allowes for this.
Post the video on youtube of the s5 and s8 as unlisted.
Problem solved!
Perhaps I jumped in too soon to report the problem of my 4k video, it turns out that the media player that i'm using on my pc is MPC-HC and this player automatically zooms in to a 1080 crop of the 4k video, I found this out by accident when I noticed that the playback looked more zoomed in than i remembered shooting the scenes, so by pressing the number 1 key on the numeral keyboard, the video zooms out to its full frame and now i'm happy to say that the videos are pin sharp from the S8 too.
Funny thing was that the S5 4k videos played at full frame on MPC-HC without having to zoom out and thats why i thought that the S8 was faulty.
