I know it's early days yet but is there any way to get root access on the stock rom? Hopefully some Dev's out there will provide us with some nice new shiny custom roms soon!
I think I saw a custom recovery, and which means you could flash an su binary then download SuperSU.

Hi Everyone,
I know there is already a thread about using Voodo OTA Rootkeeper which I believe allows you to temporarily unroot the Nexus 7 in order to apply the 4.1.1 update, but I'm wondering if SuperSU can be used to do the same? Is the process as simple as disabling SuperSU in settings, then applying the system update and then re-enabling SuperSU once the update has been installed? I am currently unrooted and have already installed the 4.1.1 update, but I am intending to root my device soon and am wondering if this process could be used for future updates?

just forget about official ota, deb's cook em to be flashable in custom recoveries, plus paulobrein will update his rom when new updates drop!

No, you don't have to change/flash a different recovery. When using the Nexus Toolkit (which I used this afternoon with great success!), you have the option to keep the stock recovery or flash clockworkmod (CWM). CWM is great if you're flashing custom roms, themes etc. as it's much more flexible (I believe), but if you're main goal is to be able to use root apps, then the stock recovery will be fine
I can't find a simple answer on this. I just want to root my stock ROM, can't be done without unlocking the bootloader, but will I lose OTA if I do that.

You won't get updates if you have a custom recovery. Rooting it will not deny you updates.

There was another thread on here about the same topic where someone said that even with a custom recovery you can install the update and that CWM will ask if you want to keep root after installing the OTA.

You get updates with a custom recovery.
I use CWM. I got an update, said install, CWM popped up, installed it, and asked if I wanted to keep root and the custom recovery. I said yes, and magic ensued.

Confirmed. You do get updates when using CWM.
Install "OTA Rootkeeper" and you will keep your root after updates.

I only want to root just to be able to use titanium backup to move data from one phone to another; are the OTA still gonna work? I dont intend to flash any custom rom for the moment.

Hi Ultimul, did you try rooting finally and are you receiving the OTA after rooting and with CWM.
Advice me as I have the same ambition to root just to back up app data but not install custom rom.
Ordered my Nexus 4 a few days ago and it should be arriving tomorrow. My only question is, if I unlock the bootloader, root it, and install a recovery, etc. but I do not flash a custom ROM, leaving the phone just on stock 4.2.2,
Will I will still be able to check for OTA updates/install them?

Yes, if you have root but still on the stock rom, kernel and recovery you can download and install the OTA but you will have to reroot again afterwards.

You can have a custom recovery and twrp will re-root your phone after the update

Yes, but for if the OP only has root and for the rest everything stock.
Better to not take otas anyways. Everytime you take a ota you risk having your phone locked by some patch they slide in via ota. Meaning you cant use the previous methods to reroot or unlock. Since your going through all the trouble of rooting. Just wait the 30mins it takes someone to make a recovery flash out of it. Its why you have a custom recovery on there in the first place. Plus its much less work lol

This is a NEXUS we don't need a exploit to gain root just unlock and push or flash SU. All nexus use the same method to root. No ota will change that

I recently had Xposed Framework installed. I uninstalled it to get my phone ready for the Android 4.4 OTA.
I have a STOCK ROOTED Nexus 4 with CWM Recovery (Bootloader: Unlocked).
I wanted to download the Android 4.4 OTA once it is released.
Based on what I understand, there are two ways (that I prefer) of receiving this:
1> Unroot the phone and put stock recovery. I had a question with this method:
a: Would I need to lock the bootloader to install the OTA? If yes, on locking would I loose my data?
2> Flashing a binary that would be released on the Google website. I also had a few questions related to this:
a: Would I loose my data if I did so?
b: Do I need to make any changes to my Stock Rooted Nexus 4 with CWM Recovery to follow this method?
Which method would you follow? Or do you have a better method? Please help me out :laugh:

Just go to the ota help desk here on xda and once the ota is being released they will put it in a zip file and you will be able to install it in recovery without losing any data, so just like a normal ota.

That's great. But what if I want to install the OTA? Wouldn't installing something from the OTA Helpdesk void the warranty?

Can anyone confirm you need to unroot or not to receive OTA? (I have never bothered with it since flashing roms). Just make sure you're running unrooted stock rom that is odexed, stock kernel and stock recovery, as far as I know.
If you flash the factory firmware from Google it will wipe out everything, including your /sdcard/ partition. You could wait for a 'stock rom' that is flashable by custom recovery, these don't delete your /sdcard while flashing, these (unrooted odexed) roms should still be able to receive OTA (correct me if I'm wrong).

I see so many of these threads and then I see the I bricked my phone going back to stock threads next. Please if you enjoy root and the features it brings you just relax and wait out the update. Your favorite developer will then create a nice new KitKat version with your updates and customizations. Of course do what you like but to unroot and get rid of your custom rom to have stock and then re root to try and get the same effect again just sounds crazy too me.

Edit: but your question is what route to take just so you know there are back to stock threads which would be your best bet to follow if you honestly feel like doing all that to undo it later....

1. How can I unroot if I need to send in for warranty repair? I've heard that LG has a root trip checker.
2. If I root, can I still get and install updates or OTA?
3. If I install a recovery, I won't be able to install OTA right?
4. What recovery is best with the G2? I need USB otg support and I do prefer CWM. Which version of CWM do I install from heatshiver's thread? Also I've heare that there are bugs with the recoveries.. Which one has less and what I need?

- From what I have read, you are correct. You cannot install OTA updates if you install a custom recovery.

- Some ROMs require CWM, others may require TWRP. Pay careful attention to any developers thread, they will usually detail any specifics. It's usually safe to have the latest version of the recovery unless the developers indicates otherwise.
Answer in no.4 is Phil's CWM recovery. See it yourself in G2 Original Dev. Thread.
