Odd Question... - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I need a staples receipt of a nexus 7 8gigs purchase made 16 days ago or less, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Help me.

Um... I don't want to impose on anything, but you will need the correct address, won't you? Don't you have to return it to the Staples you bought it at? If not, what about the Serial Numbers that are attached to the device? Will that matter? I mean, I worked in electronic retail before, Fry's Electronic if you know it, and we check the serial number of the device before we accept returns. So good luck with your request. Again, anything could have happened. There are plenty of pure reasons as to why you'd need this. I'm not trying to impose or anything.

I swear this isn't theft, my tab has a defect, I don't have my receipt, the store needs a receipt for me to swap it out for a fresh one, this is manager + general manager approved.

It came from staples, its a legit product.

I've work in the retail business. The store can generate another receipt for you. It will be on their system. Tell them the date, time, or even just your name and the system will bring up the transaction.

you shouldn't need a receipt from the store, all you need is proof of purchase - ie. bank or credit card statement/records

did you pay by card? thats even better as your statement from the bank showing the transaction can be used as proof of purchase in the uk, ive relied on that one a few times
ok, look in the uk if the product is faulty im sure you dont need a receipt as long as you can prove you bought the item in that store, has the sales-assistant or manager confrimed "remembering you" buying the tab? if they have already said they remember you coming in and buying , you shouldnt need the receipt for exchange of a faulty product.
im cursed i seem to always pickup the "less then right" one lol

edit: example bought a xbox original controller from "game" didnt work.....took it back no receipt, sales assistant said i paid cash had no receipt and couldnt get a refund as i coulda bought it anywhere......... i pointed to the box..and controller......both had "GAME" logos'.....lmao what a knob !!exchanged!!

The reason they're having a hard time doing this is because the 8 gig was discontinued and it keeps locking them out of the system with the older receipts :/

tips for buying off ebay?

any tips? anything specific to look for?
if new, then look for descriptions that say the phone is sealed in box, if its just new in box but not sealed then it could've been used and just repackaged to look like new
if used then always look for actual pictures of the phone in the posting, make sure you read what condition the phone is in (scratches or anything) and how long it was used for
the phone should run you anywhere from 350-450
PS: Bought 2 new sealed vibrants off of ebay one for 420 and other for 430

That is excellent advice to minimize buyer's risk, which is why phones in that state command a higher price than just "mint" phones in excellent condition. (Like a new car depreciates immediately when you drive it away from the dealer.)
Also, note that eBay has a Buyer Protection Program to help resolve disputes, and it is in eBay's own interest to guard the integrity of its marketplace. That does not mean they guarantee your satisfaction or even that the phone will function properly. But eBay will guarantee that the merchandise shipped meets the seller's advertised description, and "New, Sealed in Box" is an objective standard.
As a buyer I once bought such an advertised phone that did not fit that description as-delivered, and the seller was not cooperative in resolving the problem. So I had to escalate the issue to eBay, which found in my favor and saw to it that my money was refunded when I returned the merchandise. Actually, that's the closest I ever came to being burned on eBay. I think it is less risky than buying from a Craigslist seller.
I paid 350 for a 2 weeks old one (barely used) with the original box & accesories, all in perfect condition. What a sweet deal!
Check the seller's rep. I wouldn't but from anyone with fewer than 40 sales and a 98% pos rep.

Ebay is great, until you need to talk to them on the phone because of a shady seller!

I really don't want to scare you off ebay, however, with a purchase like this, I would do my ebay research very carefull.
You need to know the truth, the truth is, if you run into a problem, you will have tons of difficulty contacting ebay via phone.
I ask you to do 1 simple thing for me, just 1. Try to find an ebay phone number, search their site, search google, try to find a phone number to talk to a human being. Now, if you are able to find a phone number, call the number, see if you can get through to a human being. It took me almost 3 weeks to find a phone number, I litterly called about 20 numbers all of which were fake, old, no longer active, or put me through loops.
Finally, if you do have a problem, such as you paid for the product and didn't get the item, be ready for another saga that can last a very long time.
I've had a case open with ebay for nearly two months, supposedly ebay had decided in my favor, and I was due a full refund. Guess what, ebay never issued me a refund, the case still says open, 2 months now, no refund.

Always pay with PayPal. Any disputes with the seller, PayPal will back you up. They have a buyers protection program. Look it up on their website. By the way, you dont need a Credit Card to use PayPal, you can link it to your bank account if you prefer to pay cash.

I never trust the disputing system on ebay. Slow, almost like they dont care.
However ebay golden rule:
unless you Really truly know/trust the seller....
always pay with a credit card (not visa debit) and using paypal.
Paypal are very quick to deal with fraud/issues and very favorable to the buyer usually (I know, I sell and buy a lot ! ).
Paypal are good if you use a credit card because they are afraid of chargebacks.
Buy from sellers you trust. A good thing to do is simply ask the seller before you buy! They are human too....and if they seem legit (good reason for selling, give you an accurate description of the phone), by all means buy!

I've had Good Luck with Craigslist
I've purchased 2 Vibrants and a HTC HD2 from Craigslist.
All three were in next to new conditions and I'm very happy with my purchases. I was able to inspect the phones BEFORE putting up my money. I also require the seller to sign a receipt and provide ID before making the purchase. Can't be too careful in todays world.
I paid $300 each for the Vibrants and $250 for the HD2.
verify that the phone is not stolen. Request the IMEI number from the seller and call T-mobile up to check if the device was ever reported as stolen. I think there is also a website where you can check the IMEI # for its validity....not sure how accurate that is though

Have you tried live help? It has an approx wait time of 15 mins, works only with internet explorer but it is a real live person on the chat line and theyre usually very helpful.

Definitely seems legit. I thought the vibrant only had 2gb built in and 16gb on card.....should clarify that.
The price is a bit steep for a used vibrant with no box. I'd watch it but keep looking around at the same time.

I sold a phone on Ebay to somebody in Cyprus.
The buyer claims he never received it and filed a claim, I lost 300 bucks and a mint HD2.
I found out the buyer now sold a similar phone on Ebay too, approx 3 or 4 weeks after I shipped mine. I was able to get my IMEI number from T-Mobile (very helpful, I was impressed).
Can I find out where my phone is ?

Kinda sounds like they pulled a fast one on you and actually got the phone then sold it but told you they did not get the phone. Could T-Mobile not track it with the IMEI? I wish I knew of a definite way for you to track it via the IMEI. I did find this on Google though, here is the whole list Google pulled up. best of luck man.
Did you tell tmo to block the imei too while you were on with them? That's about all you can do, since its involving separate countries.the main prob with that is most countries have their own blacklists, so it may not do anything, but with a hint of luck the buyer gets it blocked and complains. You don't get it back but at least the seller loses out and gets a dodgy seller review.

TMobile cannot block it since it is not their phone anymore, I already asked, I have to file a Police Report.
I mailed it Priority with tracking, but it stops at when it leaves the USA, no tracking to Cyprus. Insurance was declined since USPS does not publicize well they don't have insurance for some countries, and guess what....Cyprus is one of them.
If the guy that bought the phone from by buyer/thief has actually my phone, I feel sorry for him too, he'll get a surprise very soon since the IMEI will be reported as stolen, and he'll get scammed.
Blimey, I think I'd go into the theft business too,, no proof of delivery?? Its a wonder anyone sends anything there at all!

Yeah it sounds like the person that bought/stole the HD2 knew of the no tracking and knew they could get away with it. That sucks that a world wide company like USPS can not do anything else for you. I think you should press the matter with USPS myself.

USPS cannot do anything since there is no tracking and no insurance, I already went this route.
My only alternative, now that I have an IMEI is to file a theft report with the police dept. here then I can open a case with FBI and IC3 which are federal agencies working on international frauds.
I won't see my money back, but at least the phone will be listed as stolen, IMEI on blacklist, and will never be able to be registered.
I just feel sorry for whoever bought the phone from my buyer/thief

Shame those blacklists aren't global, if it goes outside of Europe/us it will probably work. Most stolen phones end up in Africa or the middle/far east where they couldn't care less.
As for the new buyer, did you email him to let him know to check the imei? (I already pointed him in the direction of this thread, fingers crossed it will black list and he'll complain about the seller.)
Next time be sure to inform the buyer that there is no insurance offered and no refunds. I've sold an hd2 to a similar place where insurance wasn't offered and made sure to tell him this.
It's not your fault if it gets lost in the mail. You sent it.
Also, if they didn't like it. You could have easily sold it to someone else.

Apparently this guy does not know what the law is. Guess what, after I posted this thread on XDA he contacted me begging to remove, and claimed the fact that he "forgot" the claim, and he was "away" for a while.
He doesn't understand he broke the law and he should be punished. Try to rob a bank then when the cops find you return the money and say I'm sorry, you still go to jail. This is exactly what he did.
He refunded the money to me after making him reverse the neg feedback he left on Ebay, but then I found out he uses different IDs, probably to avoid consequences.
To all out there be careful if you buy anything from gericy

[Q] Craigslist Nexus4 16gb offer questions

I have an opportunity to buy a Nexus4 16gb locally on craigslist for $400 which is the same price as my Google order that won't come in for another 5 weeks. The seller appears to be legit after getting his name and googling his name. The phone is in the original box with the Google seal stickers on untouched. I asked if I could open and put my SIM card to make a test call but, he stated no since it would devalue the phone if I decided not to buy, which I understood. I asked for his receipt but, he said all I needed for warranty issues was the imei number on the phone.
Please point out anything else I need to be looking/asking for as I will be picking it up tomorrow at 7pm cst based on feedback from all the awesome members in this forum.

4. There wouldn't be any devaluing if you were to test the device with a SIM card. This is bs IMO. The only devalue would be if it was truly sealed and then which I can believe him.
5. I'm not sure about the receipt and warranty but depending on when he bought it. Google Play gives you 12 days for a RMA with them before you take it to the manufacturer. I would take the receipt though, as he can easily just report the IMEI and then you get screwed in the end or something.

You can make a deal like, Open it and I will test a call and if works I take it otherwise wont. So opening it and not taking it is not an option
Yeah if he won't let you test it **** it. You can't find the phone anywhere opening the box will hardly devalue it at all, if even. Also you should try and get the receipt because AFAIK you need more than just an IMEI for the warranty.

I would not even consider buying it if you cannot test the phone. The phone might not even be in there for all you know.
THANKS to everyone who responded to my inquiry. Got back a little while ago with the new Nexus4. It is Beauty and the Beast. Already put the case on it and now downloading my apps. The seller was on the up and up, was able to test by making a call, go over the entire phone specially the front and back glass.
Now I get to sit and play with the new toy this weekend. Got to cancel my Dec 8th order and help someone else get theirs quicker.

Congrats. Glad it all worked out and nothing suspicious happened. Happy to hear that the seller changed his mind and let you test it.
I would research the S/N from the box with Google to see if it is stolen. Also if you buy it be sure to get a receipt from the seller to show you bought it and how much you paid.
I bought one from kijjiji $550.00 BNIB 16 Gb Didn't even put a sim in. Broke the seal looked at it that's it.. But I also got a receipt First thing called google had the warranty changed into my name they checked the imei and it was legit :good:

What LG does is have you send the phone back to them for repairs which can take a couple weeks and in teh meantime you have no phone. No worries, I have his original receipt and google all is well with the imei and receipt for any warranty issues. Love this Beauty and the Beast phone.

Recovery mode - wipe everything

If I wipe the memory using the recovery mode, will I get rid of everything except the recovery software?
I want to get rid of every single file in phone, except the recovery mode.

Using recovery mode returns phone to "clean ROM" status. Your data from internal card will be erased, installed apk's as well, however all data on external card will remain. However, the data can be (relatively easily) recovered... so if you're looking for something what would erase your phone, I'd recommend to perform erasing in recovery mode, then encrypting phone, filling it with several apks and random data and... re-erase it, with de-encryption.

Look, there is this site that looks like ebay, but it is related to South America, and a seller is selling this device, this is a trustable seller, with more than 2700 sales and a 99% of positive feedback. But he said he would make no invoice for me, and I need the invoice to prove that I'm the new owner of the phone.
I'm worried if he track the phone after I receive it in home, so he may say it was stolen.

DO NOT accept this phone. DO NOT buy it. You will have no evidence if the phone was stolen elsewhere in the world and is blocked in some countries. And: Yes, it MAY happen. Some gray zone guys are making the temporary fake IMEI tricks, which will return your phone to its original state as soon as you'd upgrade ROM. In such case, you will have a stolen by someone brick.
I have no idea how it looks in Brazil (unfortunately) but in the country where I live, invoice is legally required by law.
One more advice: require that the phone's IMEI shall be on the invoice (as it is printed on the box, it shall be not a problem for seller, right?).

Just use a reputable website that has strong buyer protections in place.
The problem with what your original post asked about wiping data is what it would not even remotely come close to protecting you from a stolen phone. The original owner doesn't,t need access to the device to kill the imei. The imei is already bad when he gives it to you.
And his refusal to provide the original imei on a written invoice makes this an OBVIOUS fraud.

I didn't even know that I had to ask for the IMEI to be inserted on the invoice, I only knew about that now in this topic. I found other two sellers on the same website, with the same product, they said they'd create the invoice and that it's fine, they will insert the IMEI on the invoice. The problem now is that their phones are only 250 - 300 bucks cheaper than the brand new, at least shipment is already included. You guys think I should buy it?

Its been said plenty in this thread.
The imei can be faked temporarily.
The imei can be totally legit but the phone can still be stolen. It might not even be reported stolen yet. One of the scams is to sell a phone, then report it stolen which gets the imei blocked, then get a new phone through insurance.
The phone is half the price of anyplace else you can find it! That is just not how the free market works. A price that low is suspicious.
Everything you have described about this raises red flags.
Unless the place you are buying it from has ironclad buyer protection policies that are verifiable, you are taking a big risk.
If you don't agree, I don't care. Its not my money. Its not my decision. I'm offering an honest opinion as a disinterested third party. If you buy it I hope it all works out for you. But the odds are much higher that its a scam than if you bought a slightly more expensive one that comes from a more established store.

Wherever it is the cheapest, total all in cost. The Google store is likely the second worst place since they charge tax to a number of states and usually don't throw in extra goodies. They are beat to the title of worst place to buy only by Best Buy where you will pay tax in every state hat has one. Newegg will charge tax to CA and a few others. IMO the best place to buy is B&H. If you have not heard of them buy without hesitation. They are a well established vendor of photographic gear with outstanding service and some of the better prices around. And when it comes to photo gear their selection is unparalleled.

Thanks, and I agree B&H is a great store (I actually some of my PC parts from them), now that I know that they carry the phone I'm gonna go with them. They literally have everything tech related.

Or you could have bought a brand new one with a 2 year warranty (1 year extended with many credit cards) for $10 more
I got mine off Amazon, $64 GB; standard price of $549, after taxes and whatnot it came to about $600; it's a bit more expensive, but I'm glad I paid the extra because Amazon is awesome, and I'm getting a replacement shipped because my wifi module died after I unlocked the bootloader (how does that even happen?).
Got mine from Best Buy for $449 and a $50 gift card.

There are members here telling you not to buy from that Google Store purely because you can save a few bucks elsewhere. But I believe this is incorrect. The Google Store is the single best place to buy from even if it costs you a few extra dollars. Why? RMA's and returns. If you buy from Google and you have a legitimate problem with your phone all you do is tell them about it and they'll give you a replacement. No proof required, and very few questions asked. It's about as easy as it gets. Even if your phone is bent. If you buy from another retailer they'll generally do whatever they can to not provide you with a replacement. Those few extra bucks you might pay via the Google Store are well worth the peace of mind that comes with knowing you'll be taken care of if something goes wrong.

A couple things need to be added because it was left out. Officially, Google says it doesn't cover accidental/water damage. Having protection plan obviously covers that. I say this because above it says "even if your phone is bent".
The other thing left out is also kinda big too. It's the part about fronting the money for the device that's going to be replaced. Google doesn't just send you another device even if it's covered under warranty. They send a email with a link to follow. You follow that and it orders the "rapid replacement" or whatever Google calls that process. It puts a hold on your credit card for whatever the device costs. Once you return the defective device (Google allows you to print out the shipping label so you don't pay for that) the hold is released. The first time I came across this process the amount was a surprise.
I asked if I didn't want to front the money could I just send the defective device in and they send the fixed device/replacement back. They said its done the other way with having a hold put on your card.

A bent phone is usually a manufacture defective one, and is covered under their return policy. Accidental/water damage is not manufacture defective, so it won't be covered. Simple as that.
It's called an RMA and almost all retailers do that for returned merchandise. Look at the situation from their POV: what would keep you from not sending the defective phone back once they sent you the replacement. Again, simple as that.

The bent phones aren't seen as accidental damage, there are many reports of these being replaced by Google with no questions asked. Of course you need to "front the money" as you put it. This is normal procedure when an advanced replacement is being provided to a consumer. Anyway, you're not actually being charged, they're not taking any money, all that's happening is you're authorising them to take the money in the case that you don't return the defective device. Do you really expect companies to just send products worth hundreds of dollars with no insurance against theft/fraud?

It is simple. So simple I made sure to add it. Being told about a charge is something to know about. It wasn't mentioned. I mentioned it.
As for your question about what would keep someone from not sending a device back. I said nothing about it being right or wrong. You mention it like I did. I don't think it's wrong. Inconvenience for sure, especially if you didn't do anything wrong and it's not your fault. But I know some people would not return the defective device. Integrity for some would make them return it. As for others, some would not and that's almost certainly the reason multiple companies do that exact thing (charge up front).

Again, telling those about the charge doesn't mean I think it's wrong. It wasn't mentioned. And being told about paying for the device again, even as a hold that will be returned is something that should be mentioned.
