Official Bumper Thoughts? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone that got the bumpers from the Play Store, can you share your thoughts, please?
I couldn't get one and want to know if it would be worth it to get one whenever stock comes in. Thanks.

I Love 2PAC
I have recieved my Bumper, but not the phone itself, because it was sold out, I wanted to get the case just to get THAT much closer to the N4.
It's made of some high quality metal, i'm guessing Aluminium. It's pretty light, at only 20g, it should be able to resist most drops and scratches, but the shock might travel through the metal to the phone, so I don't know. We'll have to wait for a few drop tests on YouTube, cause there's not way I'm putting my N4 on the line.

It FEELS like metal, however it could be just plastic with a metallic overlay :L. It feels premium, though.
Should've said that in my previous post, sorry.

Can we get some pics at different angles, please?

Is the inside of it metal? I'd be afraid of it breaking the glass.

No problem! but if you can please post some pictures it'll be much appreciated! Since google doesnt have any close ups.

I have no idea what good a bumper would do so I didn't purchase one. Instead, I bought screen protector for both front and back, and a PTU case.
If Google sold a case, I would be happy to buy one.

Oooooooooh nice, premium quality. So glad I ordered it. All those haters where a little distracting...
Can we have some pics?

Metal?! Wont that interfere with the wireless charging?!

It shouldn't. If I remember my physics correctly, a magnetic field between the two coils should only occur inside, leaving no current to be induced anywhere else. Including a metallic bumper.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app

Ture, but while you are trying to position the phone on the mat, a current might be induced in the bumper if it is made of metal.

It can't be all metal because you won't be able to put it on, all metal bumpers consist of two parts and screw to each other.

Pictures plz

I think its rubber in the inside with a metal(ish) ring around the outside. I don't have mine yet but from googles pics that is what it looks like.

I wish google's official pictures show how the bumper looks like when it's actually on the phone... . That was one of the reasons I didn't buy it when it was first available.

Ghost armor over the whole phone. Looks and feels great.

I put an Invisible Shield on the backplate of my Galaxy S i9000 for the same reason. Seems like it (or any of the similar products) are the best path to go.
I haven't done this on my Nexus S yet.
I'm was considering just buying a new backplate when it gets so beat up that I don't like the look any more.
Mine's not scratched at all that I notice after 5-6 weeks I've had it.
Sorry, I don't think I made myself clear. I want to know how bad the back cover scratches, not which case I need to buy (because if I'm going to buy a case, it's going to be the "S" curved one).
@above: thanks! Can you tell me how you carry around your phone? In your pocket? With other stuff? And where do you put it down if you don't use it? On a place where it could be scratched?
No scratches ...
Not using any case either
My phone is naked and I put it in a soft leather / fabric pouch ...
And I put it in my jeans pocket, together with keys and coins
Done this for months with my HTC Desire and it is still shinny as new!
i carry it in my horizontal belt leather case that was for my old SGS I9000
perfect fit
I already mentioned above no scratches on mine yet.
I carry it naked, in my pocket. My headphones are alway in my pocket (so there's a naked jack in there usually), and I frequently carry a second phone in the same pocket (an iPhone 4 or an i9000).
I've added a poll an edited the first post.
No scratches on mine, but that's because I keep mine in a Nexus One pouch.

I'm exactly like this, except from the keys and coins.
I don't have any scratches (I'm very pedantic with that matter) and I don't use any case (makes the phone looks ridiculous).
I have a couple little scratches... but if you pay close attention to the phone, it has a few black web scratches over a few areas. Almost reminds me of black paint on cars. My Samsung tv is made out of the same plastic and it has the web scratches.
This is an just an example of what I'm talking about....

No scratches. All naked and I definitely don't take care of it as I should
I have couple on the back and where the usb port is. I tend to miss sometimes when it's dark and I'm tired, didn't really expect it to be scratched there. Oh well, I'll be keeping this phone for a while anyways. Also use a case, but I don't think it's doing a very good job protecting it from scratches.

Wondering what happens if your note falls from 1 foot?

It shatters the screen!!!! motherf^#*!^#*(. I was getting out of my car and it fell directly on the screen in the garage.

That would make me sick. That is horrible. The first thing I did when I got my note is get a warranty from squaretrade and then get theftaware to catch the thief that trys to steal it.
I was hoping to never know.
My deepest sympathies and thoughts go out to you brother
ahhhh now you are making me worry . i dropped twice but seem to be ok as it land with the back. i should get an insurance for the phone i guess or just have to be more careful .
i feel for you.
The thing is that it is a big phone and hard to keep in the hand. A good case is a must.....I have a feeling I will not be the last.
holy no... that's awful!

If it still works, he should consider himself lucky. Things like is always makes me glad, I'm safe than sorry. I'm going to have to consider SquareTrade after I get my screen protector & case.
So we can assume now that the material used by Samsung is not the same in terms of strength and durability as Gorilla Glass.

Iphones are made out of crap Olephobic glass that they buy from 3rd world countries. It costs ≈200 USD to make a 16gb 4gs. Of course it's gonna get wrecked off 1 drop.

My recommendation get a semi hard rubber case takes a beating. I have never broke a screen in 25 years of having a phone. I did Have a Blackberry old Brick (big square ugly phone) I dropped it off a 40 ft roof and it bounced and the screen never broke......... Luck of the Irish I guess
Either way I have dropped alot of phones and the semi hard case seems to take the shock
Bummer man, probably 145usd for a screen assembly.........
Note hasn't even been out for that long so even if you don't have insure to cover it I'm pretty sure your still applicable to apply.
A device that big and heavy would really break easier than the smaller ones I guess.

It works perfect no body damage just the screen
Its not gorilla glass its just a thin piece of common glass. I am pretty sure it broke because it landed flat on the screen.
The problem with any glass screen isn't that they are "shatter" proof, but they are scratch resistant. Just about any piece of glass tinsel strength will resist a scratch (except for a diamond), but a sudden impact, especially on an edge will pretty much shatter it. The gorilla glass can flex, if you've seen the video, but I bet they never show anyone striking it on the edge. Even though in your event, it fell on the face, from the look of the photo, it landed on the edge first, even if just by a small amount.
I have a Dell Streak and the first thing I do before exiting my vehicle, is to make sure it is in the pouch before I get out of the car. My previous phones (HTC's) got dropped several times getting into/out of my car. I use to keep an otter box case on it, but they are so bulky, not many cases around for belt use.
I feel for you, but, I bet just about any large surface area piece of glass would do the same thing. Head over to the Dell Streak forum and you'll see a few broken glass streaks.

My 22-month old Captivate's camera lens has a single scratch on it (which doesn't show in photos because it's luckily offset), so I'm guarding my S3 like a hawk.
What worries me, is that unlike the Captivate's RECESSED camera lens, which provides a little fundamental protection, the SGS3's sticks out a bit. If you don't use a case to protect the lens a bit, then it seems much more scratch prone. Seems more scratch-prone even if you DO use a case, really.
Here's a pic of my Captivate's camera lens taken with my S3. The scratches on the plastic above the lens might;ve landed on the lens if it wasn't recessed.

I might consider putting a "protector" on the lens, but it'd probably reduce image quality, so, probably better idea to pry it off and replace it if scratched.
why is there NO case that has some sort of cover that flips over or slides over to protect the camera lens? I always just used a piece of scotch tape. But that is of course a crap ssolution and needs to be re-done every week or two. I never understood why NO cases I have seen offer this? Especially for a popular phone like the S III?

Probably because the VAST majority of people can't tell the difference between a clear photo and one taken with a lens covered in fingerprint grease and scratches. Or if they can, they don't give two ****s.
Also, dummies would still forget to "take the lens cap off" and blame anyone but themselves for missing magic moments.

Seidio makes a couple of cases that have exactly what you're looking for. Was just looking at them last night. Flap folds down to take pictures then back when you're done. I almost got one, but I think it'll make the phone too thick. Go to seidioonline.com if you want to check it out.

Oh really? then we should start making cars completely of plastic if thats the case.
Before the SGS4 was announced they explained why they used plastic which should have been a clue that the SGS4 was going to be similar to all their previous devices. Don't like plastic? There are plenty of glass and metal options available. Since the SGS4 will be around for at least another 15 months *****ing that it's plastic is pretty futile. And everyone considering a SGS4 can either choose to deal with it or not. Rather than complaining, vote with your wallet and buy something else.

I just don't really feel like dropping a piece of plastic and having the thing shatter into million of pieces. A little unrealistic I know, but really? I don't care if they thing plastic does the best job, it obviously doesn't. It scratches, it's breakable. Sure HTC didn't do the best job of it either, but at least they used something that feels good/amazing in the palm of your hand.

thing is plastic isnt the best casing just has tendencies to creak or break easily especially with a now thinner bezal

I think they didn't want to update the look so people can familiarize with the brand better. People are beginning to recognize the Galaxy s3, and it will be easier for people to know the phone if it keeps a similar design. Sure, it could've looked a little more premium for once, but it's the software that's the most important, and they did a decent job with improvements and gimmicks that actually seem to work.

Not if it comes at the expense of microSD and battery *cough HTC*cough*.
I reaaaaaaaaaaally dont get all the plastic hate, most people place their phones in cases anyway, especially if they are made out of leet materials like glass or the fancy-peeling One S aluminium, which is even more stupid.
My GS3 survived w/o a case for almost a year now btw, and because those "cheap plastic" back covers are so uhh.. cheap, I can replace them anytime for minimal cost, I actually have 4 custom back covers just for variety.
Oh and I should have added "Power Button on the side" to OP as another pun at HTC but w/e.
Who here doesn't use a protection case on their phone? Plastic is perfect. What most people forget is plastic is perfect for a phone with removable battery.

That backside doesn't look like mine for sure.
If this is an issue to you, return it to Sony or call customer service........very simple
Did you buy a secondhand phone? Seems like it was replaced
Looks like a screen protector. Can you feel the raised edges of the plastic sides or camera lens? If not it's most definitely a protector. All the replacement backs I've found have been frosted.
I admire the skill of the guy that put that screen protector (if is one).
I believe the back cover has been replaced since there is no sign of a screen protector. But what kind of manufacturer manufacts fake cover that looks nothing like the real one...
I replaced my back cover due to a scratched lens cover, which is glossy as opposed to frosted, so agree with suggestions that it could have been replaced at some point.

I tried to order one but they don't ship outside the UK. Maybe I was wrong in assuming they were all frosted simply because they look like it in the stock photos they use to sell it! Are these glass or plastic?

Ah, sorry didn't realise they were mainland UK only.
I actually had no idea it would be glossy until it arrived - it was a quick purchase so I could replace the plastic camera cover and get back to taking pictures without lens flare. To be fair though, all reviews etc. I've read all talk about the frosted glass back so I'm pretty certain on closer inspection that it is plastic.
Not a deal breaker personally, I imagine it won't shatter as easily and I have put a vinyl cover on it anyway. Came with adhesive already on it too which seems to be a bonus looking elsewhere, though I'm not convinced the waterproofing will be guaranteed with it any more. But Im not in a hurry to test that...
Finally got my glossy back in the mail and figured I'd follow up with y'all. Someone may gain knowledge from it.
Purchased from here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/281997857206?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
It is a bit of a weird white compared to the frosted back but similar to the front.
It's glass, and extremely fragile. I cracked it taking it out of the packaging. It's probably as fragile as an egg shell. I'm still on the hunt for another to strip to clear and expose the electronics. If y'all know of any plastic ones let me know.
