I bought a used N1 on eBay. I totally wasn't even thinking about the fact that there are different models of the phone for different carriers. Turns out I have the T-Mobile N1, but I have AT&T service currently.
I assume that there is no kind of mod/firmware to get it to use AT&T 3G, and that it's the hardware that limits me to T-Mo? Probably more than some custom firmware or something could fix?
That kind of sucks, if so. I doubt anyone would have an AT&T model, looking for a T-Mo model, eh?

No, they don't. T-Mobile and Verizon use totally different radio technologies.
Go onto the Marketplace forum on XDA, and trade/sell it through there.
Put your sim card in it

Also if you have trouble locating the AT&T compatible N1, you may also consider the Telus version of HTC Desire. Largely the same hardware, AT&T bands, but no Euro 2100 band.
Possible bonus: AT&T does not know the IMEI of Telus Androids, and might not force you to a higher cost smart phone data plan.

I really think that it will be much more difficult
since they discontinued the Nexus One, and provided it through the developers only,
it has always been the T-Mobile version which is quite disappointing....
the AT&T version seem to just disappear from manufacturing all together
point I am trying to make is that it the AT&T version should be much rarer and possibly worth more on the market since there are less quantities of it

If you Unlock the S off on the nexus one Tmobile. You can use a At&t sm card with out a problem. I UnloCked the S off ON the mytouch 4g AND IT works on At&t s network. HMMMM. Wondering if it works.

Yes, it will function on the network. The issue is that the radio hardware is built for specific frequencies, which differ between the T-Mobile and AT&T models.
You can use one phone on the other's network just fine as a phone, but you will be limited to 2G data speeds, as AT&T uses 850/1900MHz for their 3G data and T-Mobile uses 900 1700/2100MHz.
Umm, nobody uses 900 MHz for cellular in North America... that spectrum is not allocated for that purpose here.

You're right, my apologies. The fact of the matter (that the hardware is incompatible between the AT&T and T-Mobile networks) remains intact though.
Correct 3G data frequency information, as best I can make it out:
AT&T uses 850MHz and 1900MHz.
T-Mobile uses 1700MHz and 2100MHz.
900MHz and 2100MHz are used primarily in Europe; a phone made for European markets will have a better chance of being fully compatible with T-Mobile's network in the states based on sharing the 2100MHz band.
Closer but still not quite
Read up on the AWS band. European phones will not get T-Mobile 3G at all without 1700.
But in the specific case of the Nexus One, models sold in Europe do have AWS.

I just got the mytouch 4g and i wanted to sell my nexus one. But i wanted to double check and see if i can sell it to someone on the at&t network. I currently have tmobile. I thought the S-Off was to completely unlock the phone. So u can switch between carriers. Didnt know the frequency would be different. thank guyz. Damn u HTC.

What kind of shape is your T-Mobile N1 in?
I'm actually in the process of switching to T-Mobile, and I have an ATT model that I would potentially be interested in trading, but it's definitely not mint.
Sorry if this has been answered but I'm on the xda app and can't search. I'm thinking about getting this phone and unlocking it to work on T-Mobiles network. How cross compatible is it? Will it work with the T-Mobile "4G"?

Nope, you will only get 2G (EDGE).
t-mobile and at&t use different 3G frequencies, so if you unlock it you will only get EDGE speeds. Not worthy IMO, you have lots of options in your country, i would recommend to wait for the samsung galaxy s II phone.
Will work on the network but data will be at Edge speeds, not 4G.

On the new Nexus S - if you run out of internal storage - what size memory card can you add? Oh, wait they left off the SD card slot on that model. But those super AMOLED screens are really easy on the battery right? Oh wait, if the screen is black they use less juice but not otherwise.
Sorry, had to pick on you. Suffered with the captivate for 8 months..... yeah i drank the Koolaid - now i know better - but samsung sure can spin it.

Just ignore him, hes been trolling all over the Atrix forums. The gyroscope in his phone apparently makes his keyboard so fast that he cant use punctuation.

nowhere do they say you can use an att phone on t mobile 3G. it's been known for years that their frequencies are different and incompatible. you just didn't do your homework before purchasing.
I knew 99% it won't work but i took the challenge anyway ..

That code process is to unlock the phone to enable it to be used with networks other than AT&T. But that doesn't get you data speed any faster than 2G/Edge using an Atrix on T-Mobile's network.
I'm a little confused here. You guys are saying that the Atrix will only get 2G/EDGE speeds on TMobile because the frequencies are different.
I am currently using the Nexus One.. how is it that I'm getting 3G speeds with a phone that is compatible with both AT&T and TMobile then??
Doesnt this mean that the Atrix should be able to get 3G speeds as long as it has the appropriate software? or am I not understanding something..
There are 2 kinds of nexus ones.. one with AWS bands (tmobile) and one with the regular 850/1900 (ATT). That's why you see them work on both tmobile and att. But a single device won't work on both bands.
It is a hardware issue. No software flashing will be able to fix it. If you bought the wrong one then you're stuck with it.

False. There's not a chance in the world that is true. T-Mo USA and AT&T use mutually exclusive bands. No carrier-branded phones carry both bands. The only modern phone that carries bands necessary for 3/4G on either network would be the upcoming, not-for-sale/developer-only Nokia N950.

The Nokia N8 and E7 also have the 3G frequencies necessary for both At&t and T-mobile, as well as Europe/Asia (850/900/1700/1900/2100). However, I agree with you that no At&t/T-mobile branded device carries all the needed bands.

I was really hoping to have my TZones internet plan, which runs at 3G speeds on the Nexus, run on an unlocked Atrix but that doesn't look possible.
Are there any phones newer than the Nexus One that will work with Tmobile 3G and are unbranded by Tmobile?

Here's a list of phones that will work with tmobile 3G. Take your pick. You may have to source it from somewhere else if you wish to buy it unlocked and unbranded.
The Nexus S is unlocked and unbranded even if you get it from tmobile. But since you are coming from the Nexus One, it is up to you if its worth the upgrade. Other than the Nexus S, have a look at dual core phones.

Atrix on t-mobile
i am currently running atrix 4g on system version 4.5.141 and android version 2.3.6.. I am rooted and have and unlocked boot loader. I also got the unlock code for my phone and it was successful and i am now running T-mobile sim chip i am only getting the Edge .. I have a thought as if you could change the phone frequency settings with sqlite editor i mean if you can disable the entitlement_check to enable theathering with AT&T's 2gb plan then we should be able to figure out how to change the frequency ratings of the phone to be able to run on t-mobiles 4g ... I wish that someone with a little more Knowledge could help out with this..

Yes, pentaband means it works with virtually every GSM carriers. It will work with T-mobila HSPA+ 42mbps so you will get great speed, as long as you are in the coverage area.

its jusyt last time i used blackberry bold 9900 unlocked no carrier logo , i only get H+ , is that edge ? sorry if i discuss blackberry in this thread its just sad me down to see 4g won't work with that phone . and it occured to me everytime i buy a cellphone i need to know what kind of the signal it will get using tmobile and with that unlocked phone or international phone u know ....

H+ is not edge it isn't 4G as the blackberry bold doesnt support it. All the Nexus 4's are the same international or not. If you can get '4G' in your area the nexus 4 will get it. Id recommend ringing up t-mobile and asking.
The Google Play version is the EXACT same version that T-Mobile will sell.
You can check at the store to see if there is 4G or online at there website with there map.
Mind you 42Mbps is theoretical so don't expect to see anything close to that. Because a lot of different factors come into play no matter what phone you are using.
But to answer your question: Yes it will get high speed.

so what's the different between unlocked nexus 4 and tmobile nexus 4 ? both of them unlocked or what ? cause if they're the same , imma get tmobile version , since its $199 . just my 2 cents .
shoot , i keep thingking about samsung google nexus the one before nexus 4 , i want to have that one compare to nexus 4 , because the design is much more better u know , and battery removable its a plus point , but yeah i know the feature is not the same like nexus 4 ,

I'd play around with them. The advantage of the store one is that it will be cheaper in the long run to buy it and get a prepaid contract the $199 model comes with a new 2 year contract. I don't like the galaxy nexus because it has an awful screen. But your best bet is going in a shop and asking to look at demo models. Play with them.

T-mobile uses 1700 band for 3g/4g
If a phone supports that it will work on T-mobile. This phone does, so yah.

The T-Mobile version is far from a sensible option for those ultimately looking for the least expensive device overall. Granted, that may be valid if someone already has intentions of signing a 2 year agreement with T-Mobile, otherwise, even with T-Mobiles somewhat competitive monthly plans, by the end of 2 years ,you'll certainly fork over more than $150: the additional upfront cost it would take to purchase a unlocked 16GB Nexus 4.
Not to mention T-Mobile doesn't offer a 8GB variant, which is more than adequate for me & surprisingly many others I'm sure.

HTC just released the unlocked One on their website. Follow the link below. $574.99 with no tax unless you're in CA or TX.
Looking at the bands, it supports ALL carriers, unsure about Verizon, the LTE band is supported though.

Just to check my findings, I called up HTC and talked to a pretty knowledgeable rep that said that the unlocked version did in fact support Verizon. He acknowledged the fact that Verizon wasn't selling the phone from their stores but HTC wanted it to be able to work on the network. We'll see about that.
So some signs are pointing to it working for Verizon. I already placed the order so I will see for myself in person if this actually works or not. As for all of you other guys, it will work on all other carriers here in the US. With the exception of T-Mobile's primary HSPA+ band (I forgot the actual number). But it does support T-Mobile's newer HSPA+ band (1900Mhz) which is already live in many markets, including Atlanta where I am.
If you know for a fact that any of this info is incorrect feel free to let me know and I'll change it.

Though I will pass this along to a co-worker who really wanted the One, but was stuck on Verizon, so was waiting for the hope of a delayed Verizon launch. With a 30 day return window, it doesn't necessarily hurt to try. (though I did notice that it seemed to say 30days or 30minutes talk time, whichever came first)

I believe that the T-Mobile specific version works on both their old and new HSPA+ bands. It obviously supports LTE too.

WCDMA is NOT the same as CDMA. WCDMA is UMTS/HSPA. CDMA is CDMA. They are not compatible and there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY the Unlocked HTC One will work on Verizon or Sprint. They are CDMA networks and do not support GSM/WCDMA/UMTS/HSPA regardless of the frequency band.
Lol no the unlocked is not a CDMA phone... Sucks to be a customer of CDMA carrier. There is always TMo or att you know.

If it works, great, if it doesn't I was already going to switch to T-Mobile anyway. And yes I am in the 1900Mhz HSPA+ area so I will be able to get it, and LTE when it finally comes to Atlanta. Not to mention I ordered overnight shipping (getting it tomorrow) and there is no tax so I will already be getting it for cheaper and sooner than other T-Mobile customers if it doesn't work on Verizon. Either way I win

This thread delivers misinformation, as the unlocked version does not support any CDMA carrier, so the information "works on all carriers" is plain simple wrong. Please research a bit more thorough before posting a thread in the future.
I just got this unlocked verizon g2 and am using it on att, I can't get lte but I was seeing if there's a way to enable aws on it? I really like this phone but this slow data is killing me

AT&T doesn't use AWS, except in very very VERY few areas, and only for LTE. They use 700 MHz. Verizon uses 750 MHz.

But Verizon is starting to activate their AWS spectrum in "major metropolitan areas" but there are conflicting reports in regards to the Verizon variant of the G2 and AWS.
Especially since most recent Verizon LTE phones can access the spectrum yet it hasn't been confirmed for the G2.
Do you understand what AWS is though? It's just 1700/2100 MHz together. AT&T doesn't use it (except as I said in like less than 1% of their LTE areas). AT&T uses 850/1900 MHz for HSPA+ ("4G") and 700 MHz for LTE (which Verizon devices don't do).
AWS is what T-Mobile uses for LTE though, so you'd be able to get T-Mobile's LTE out of the box.

But lemme get one thing straight, can the phones run at these frequencies if a different modem flashed or what? Anyway this isnt going to be an issue for me because im buying an att variant and selling my Verizon variant

No, it's more than just the modem file. Like you said, just go and buy the AT&T (or T-Mobile) version. The T-Mobile version will work on AT&T fully as well.

I posted before that, yes, a T-Mobile device will fully work on AT&T with LTE and everything. If you don't have LTE on it when you put the SIM in, call up AT&T and tell them to turn on LTE on your account (if you've never had an LTE device on your AT&T account before).

Ive had lte phones since they came out, i just havent seen anything about it but you saying itll work. I just dont want to be stuck in the same position i am now with this Verizon phone

T-Mobile devices are the same as AT&T devices; the only thing different is that they also support T-Mobile's 4G (which uses AWS) where as AT&T devices don't. I promise you it'll work. Just make sure you ask the buyer for a receipt to prove that he paid for the phone in full; you might end up with a device that gets blacklisted because the buyer decides not to pay for the phone/his bill in full.

Only for LTE. It won't get LTE on AT&T but it will on T-Mobile.

I don't get why people still think they can just bring a Verizon LTE phone to ATT OR ATT LTE to Sprint or Sprint LTE to Tmobile, etc. It is pretty ridiculous that most people don't understand how cell phones work and never look at the frequencies that are supported on the phone.
About Verizon AWS LTE...Verizon has said that they are only deploying 5,000 AWS LTE towers by the end of this year and willing be adding more sites in 2014. You think 5,000 LTE sites is a lot considering that Verizon's network comprises of 45,000 towers. Let me tell you it isn't considering that is only about 1/9 of the total towers spread out nationwide. You'll be lucky to get a stable LTE connection if you only have LTE BC 4 support considering the shorter range propagation characteristics of AWS spectrum. Anyone thinking of bringing over their Tmobile LTE phones to Verizon better think twice before doing that assuming they will get the same LTE range and coverage as its 700 MHz LTE network.
To me it is always easier to just sell the LTE phone that I am no longer a carrier with and buy the carrier branded LTE phone to avoid all this hassle of unlocking it and having to worry about frequency incompatibilities.
Verizon and att share an aws band. I know about phones, im not dumb. I was just exploring the possibility of it being achieved. If the phones have exactly same hardware across the board, than it means its software related, which in the android world, with alot of trial and error and work, most software issues can be overcome. Thanks for your huge rant though, you should go work for Verizon

Dude. I know everything there is to know about this. AT&T uses AWS LTE in VERY VERY VERY few areas. You won't be able to get LTE with your Verizon G2 on 99% of their network.
