I had a few problems. First installed superuser by mistake and it didn't work.
I then installed superSU using the temporary recovery option which worked fine but I couldn't boot into recovery afterwards so I went back and installed TWRP recovery and now everything is good.

Do you have access to fastboot?
Download TWRP, then reboot into the boot loader, and do
fastboot flash recovery <name of recovery image>
Then start recovery on your device, and flash SuperSU. Profit

Sorted it. Thanks guys.

It's on the upper left of the toolkit, on the basic feature section click "change".

Wugfresh toolkit worked fine here : )

Fair enough, but I couldn't find an equally comprehensive guide with TWRP, and I'm not sure if TWRP automatically corrects for the "stock rom wants to overwrite recovery" issue.
His version is 6.0.0.6 (step 12).

Don't use a toolkit.... unless you would like to make another thread and title it "Help I bricked my nexus 7"
You root it the same way every nexus is rooted.
Unlock the boot loader in fastboot
Flash recovery
Flash ROM or superuser package.

Download this on your nexus 7:
http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip
Download to pc:
http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.0-grouper.img
If bootloader is locked then:
Power of nexus 7, hold power and volume down till you see the menu then let go.
In cmd or Linux terminal "fastboot oem unlock"
Confirm on screen. It erases all data.
(Note you can make an adb backup first, can't remember offhand the command, search "adb backup" )
Flash cwm "fastboot flash recovery clockwork-touch-6.0.1.0-grouper.img" now boot into recovery either " adb reboot recovery" or in the fastboot menu.
Then flash Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip in cwm, and you're rooted.
I recommend switching to superSU now from Play.

Or, just head over to rootzwiki where the cli procedure is stickied. Just needed confirmation that fastboot oem unlock was the SECOND step (adb backup -all -nosystem being the first)..
Root is now on today's to do list.

correct, back up first, then fastboot oem unlock, root (flash CWM recovery, then install superuser zip) or flash Rom, then restore the adb backup

Well, the adb backup didn't quite work out because it didn't back up "active" apps (of which there were more than I expected). But once I got it rooted, I was able to install from my old Acer's titanium backup that I had saved on Dropbox.

Please be more clear... If your are already on a custom recovery and want to change for ex currently on cwm and want to change it to twrp just flash the twrp zip and reboot, done. (Though not sure as I am still confused about your question)
You just flash a new recovery using fastboot, same as you did flashing the first custom recovery

my nexus 4 is bricked :(

Hey guys,
I've recently updated to android 4.3
I've installed franco kernel on top of the os and it seems to screw up my phone
the phone restarted and its stuck on the google logo
I've tried to use nexus root toolkit of WUG to install stock + unroot in the soft brick mode
and its still stucked on the google logo
tried factory reset from bootloader and now it tells me I dont have OS hehe
mmm dont know really what to do from here and not sure
I did the above mentioned steps as I should.
I dont have problem to delete everything and to do a factory reset if possible
Also I'd like to have 4.2.2 .. loved it more as I could work with franco kernel
would much appriciate any guidence on to follow up from here
as I am preety lost.
thanks alot mates!
That is soft bricked and there is like a million ways to fix it.
If you want you can sideload a custom rom of your choice or you can just use the Nexus Stock Images which allows you to install 4.2.2 or 4.3.

Choose your android version here, choose the Mako/Occam type.

From the looks of it there is no Fastboot binary in it so you need to copy them over to that folder making sure your in the bootloader and you have drivers.

Make sure you are downloading the correct version of franco if you still want his kernel.

[Q] [URGENT] Need help accessing files on my Nexus 4!

Im in dire need of help here. I sold my phone through ebay today and have been rushing round to restore the phone to default. In the process I have wiped my phone of everything up to installing the factory 4.3 rom onto the phone.
Unfortunately, I cant access the phone via my computer! Ive tried installing drivers but I cant access the storage to put the rom onto the phone for me to install it and I'm tearing my hair out over this.
Please tell me theres a way to do this!
Thanks in advance!
PS. Windows 8.1, TWRP recovery.

You don't copy anything onto the phone... You flash it in fastboot. Plenty of threads about this.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
To restore the phone to stock you need to use fastboot, not flash through custom recovery, otherwise the phone still isn't stock and they won't receive updates.
Just follow these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34552123
For Windows 8 to install the driver you need to reboot into advance mode and press F7 at the menu to disable driver signature, adb/fastboot and driver link in my signature.

I used the fastboot guide and it worked. Thanks for your help everyone!
