Various metro features not working. - Windows 8 General

I have a few problems:
None of the metro apps that came with Windows are working, when I click on one, the large coloured screen with that white icon appears, but then that's it, the thing just flips away back to the start menu.
Despite Windows being activated, personalisation options are greyed out as well.
Any ideas what the problem is?
I upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 Pro.

I had that trouble too. In mi case the origin was my Kaspersky Internet Security. I had to uninstall it and then install again. I don't remember where exactly I found it, but I read at answers.microsoft.com that the behaviour you are describing is usually due to antivirus software activated during Windows upgrade.

Is your screen resolution at least 1366x768?

XDA exec desktop messed up

I just messed up my desktop somehow, the regular desktop has been replaced by a desktop which is different and has a bunch of tabs at the bottom stating home, customs, settings, help
When I reset the device and start it, the old desktop comes up and it gets replaced by this new desktop, I think I pressed the o2 active button and this is what happened. Prior to that the pda behaved funny and said that I did not have enough power to start the wireless, and then I tried to check the power and could not get into the screen where it gives a breakdown of the battery.
when I click the screen icon to rotate the screen into portrait mode and then back to landscape(upside down) and then back to landscape(it skips portrait), the desktop is back to normal, however there is a black band on the right hand side with the regular thin lines running across the band. The band is about 2-3 cm wide and runs from 1 cm from the top to 1 cm from the bottom. it is functional because the icon of the screen does appear on it in addition to the wireless manager icon(circle with the black dot)
Is there any way I can get back my old desktop
O2 Active dosn't have tabs across the bottom, but that sounds familiar. Possible spb pocket plus? Can't remember but deffinately sounds like a piece of software I've played with in the past.
What have you got installed on the Exec?

in addition to the usual stuff from o2, i have got tcpmp, a zip progra and a cab installer
i guess o2active is the desktop? it is o2active, now the funny thing is, that i get the o2active desktop in the fourth orientation(the original orientation when you open the xda in clamshell mode) it seems to be the original desktop but with the black band on the right hand side.
an update on my dektop
The black side of the desktop has increased in size
and i got a message which saidSomething about a usb device which could not be authenticated and it said that tere was not enough power to connect to the usb or sd device and
then I could not open any file since the device(exec) was stating that it could not authenticate me, then reset it and i am back with a lrger black portion of the screen, please help

My bad, I just remembered the menu popping out from the left.
To xda_guy when you say you reset it, do you mean a soft reset only or have you hard reset it too?
i have soft resetted it
i dont want to hard reset it
Don't be scared of a hard reset.
Sync it, and your important stuff is saved.
The rest of your programs disappearing gives you a chance to install the latest versions, use the UPX program to compress them and make sure you have the latest ROM/radio in your device.
You don't need to do a hard reset,
Go to
Start> Programs> Install Type> Basic OK
The screen may look a bit screwed, change the Theme to something of your liking and do a soft reset. As you will have de-activated the O2 Active everytime you soft reset you will get a message telling you so but it's no big deal
thanks for the replies
when i sync my device, what info is tsored onto my pc?
how will i restore this info back to my xda?
is this the UPX website
http://upx.sourceforge.net/
which program should i use on this site?
steladel i followed your advice, and got back my good old screen, cool, cool, cool
what is the active o2 used for anyway?
when should one use a hard reset?

Sprint Mogul: WM 6.1 Large Start Menu Problem

I recently upgraded my mogul to the latest stock ROM and was excited to use the large start menu feature introduced into the WM 6.1 update.
My problem is that when in landscape mode with the large start menu enabled, if you press the start menu a couple of times from the home screen, parts of the start menu stay on the home screen as artifacts and can only be removed by starting a program or something that uses the whole screen.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Is is maybe related to the HTC Home Plugin and not the WM 6.1? When I turn off the HTC Home Plugin from the today screen, the issue still exists.
Thanks!
I was able to reproduce the problem and attached screenshots of the problem to this message...
It seems that the artifacts only appear on the far right side of the screen, it looks like it is starting at pixel #241 or so... so maybe HTC isn't calling InvalidateRect properly in Landscape mode or something along those lines
BINGO! Nice work! You have just proved that i'm not going crazy!
Thanks for the confirmation. Don't know exactly what we can do about it though. Any ideas from the developers out there?
Thanks!

How to Get Start Button and Classic Start Menu in Windows 8?

Well I found a way to get back classic start button and start menu in Windows 8.
Download the freeware utility called ViStart from here.
Once downloaded install it, and it will bring back the start button and classic start menu in Windows 8.
That’s all. You will now have the start button and classic start menu in your Windows 8 consumer preview. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing!!
Anyway, I've started a new Thread with a petition for Microsoft, to let us decide whether or not we want Metro.
Check it out, and sign it, please.

Not working for me. The start button gets placed on the upper right corner of my desktop and when I press it the start menu is only partly visible in the lower right corner. (where it's supposed to be)
Also not appreciating the Babylon search crap and regcleaner pro program that gets installed when running the installer for the search button. I get prompted for installation of the babylon search bar and even with all the boxes unchecked Babylon installs.
Works, but is bundled with toolbars and crapware. Also has overlay problems with IE icon.

Thank you for posting this link. It looks like people need to read the instructions so they don't install the crapware. Worked fine for me. Nice guide there too.

Try this:
http://windows8beta.com/2012/03/start8-app-for-windows-8-start-menu-released
Why would you bother installing Windows 8 if you're going to put back the old Start Button and neglect Metro? The desktop "App" is completely identical to Windows 7, the only thing you've gained is incompatability for some drivers and a new task manager.

Just like to post my choice here, if you don't mind...
I like Start8.
It's only $5, and you can change the icon of the button, and whether it leads to the Metro start or the 'classic' start (Menu like Windows 7).
I personally have it going to the Metro start, but I've had a look at the windows 7 start and think it does look better than Classic Shell...
The only drawback is the $5 some are unwilling to spend for a bit of software

I purchased Start8 quite a while ago, I found it to generally be a better clone, but I found Classic Shell to be a lot more customizable, although a tad bit less stable.
So, if you want a true replica of Windows 7's start menu (or their Windows 8 menu) I'd choose Start8, but if you want a bit more customizable of an experience (that's also free) I'd go with Classic Shell.
Pretty happy with Classic Shell. The port for RT was very well done, now I have it on my full Win8 tablet and it's pretty good. Not sure if it was related or not but I lost my autorotation around the same time I installed classic shell. As per the usual Windows weirdness, a reboot fixed it.

Right, this is exactly how I feel about these start menus too.
The only reason that I chose to showcase Classic Menu is that generally people would like to try free software before paying

And I'm not sure that it has been mentioned that Classic Menu also has options to display the start menu as XP, or even Classic, as well as Vista and Win 7. I've been satisfied with my Classic Menu, so I have not tried the other programs.

Agreed, I like Classic Shell because of the customization too.
Classic shell
Use Classicshell to obtain familiar "start" button in my Acer W511 tablet. Its most comfortable and good designed programm, IMHO. But I have two questions, I couldn't find answers on
First - how to make programm not to install its panels in "Explorer" & "IE"?
Second - after installation sensor "Windows" button in the lower tablet's panel begun to launch "Desktop + start", instead of metro-app shifting. I didn't find how to return initial appointment
So, can someone help me?

Go to the settings for Classic Shell (Classic Explorer Settings and Classic IE9 Settings) and remove the toolbars
Classic Shell Start Menu Settings -> Basic Settings -> WIndows Key Opens -> WIndows Start Screen

Sorry, I'm not 100% sure what you mean by Windows sensor button. I am thinking you mean the Windows button in the middle of the tablet, like the Home button. Or do you mean when you do a quick swipe from the left to bring up the "multitasking" tab. There is the funny looking start button at the bottom that is just a bunch of tiles. When you press that, what is it that it should do? Switch between metro apps? Mine brings me back to the Windows Start screen.

OMG! Sorry, my friend! I've been workin' and didn't pay proper attention to your first message on this page. It contains the solution for the problem №2 from my first post. I'd red your post hastily and, having no tablet near to check, thought about porblem №1 solution And, only when in home, I took my tablet to do what you proposed me to do, and understand, that it was a solution for problem №2 :good: Now, windows sensor button (yes, in the middle of the tablet's lower board) gives me windows start page (yea!). Thanks!!!
Still trying to find the solution for problem No1 :fingers-crossed:

Let's clarify what problem number 1 is. Are you talking only about Classic Shell installing things into Windows Explorer and the Desktop IE?

In a Windows Explorer window, tap and hold on the toolbar where the icons are, and then after a few seconds (when the square comes up completely), release, and then uncheck the option for the Classic Explorer.
In an IE window, press and hold around the tab area (not directly on a tab) and then release. When the options show up, select Classic Explorer Bar. You should then get a window asking to disable the add-on. Click on Disable.

How can I alt+tab on a Windows 8 Pro tablet?

I just realized I had no way of switching between desktop programs that are full screened. Anyone have any good alternatives? I've tried remapping the hardware screen rotation button, but it seems to share a scan code with the Windows button, so changing one would end up changing both. I've also looked into possibly having gestures for it, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I'm certain that it's possible, though, since Samsung's Touch Supporter offers this functionality, but isn't available for Windows 8 (only Windows 7 on their site or preinstalled on Windows 8 machines).
Switch the onscreen keyboard to the one that emulates a real one. My Asus has that option.
If you're full screened, you cannot access the on screen keyboard.
