Guys what's a good video converter (free/paid) for converting Bluray/regular movies to a format that's perfect for Nexus 4 screen size?
Lemme know. Thanks!
Handbrake, perfect for any situation.

I don't think you need 1. Just download MX player and it should handle the format very well. I used MX on my Galaxy Nexus to play some 720p mkv and it looked really gorgeous. Can't wait to watch Homeland on my Nexus 4.

The file themselves are too big, so converting them to a smaller file helps.

Freemake! It's free, sufficiently good for the small screen, and you can use it for just about any device/situation you can imagine. That, and it's brain dead simple with a pleasing modern interface. You should check it out...
http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/.
But, yeah, I would only re-encode if the 720p files are too large, and as we know, space is surely a commodity on this device.

Given the screen resolution of Nexus4 resizing will result in a much less enjoyable experience. Do you need to put 10G worth of video on your phone? Really?

If I don't reduce quality (not the resolution but the bitrate), one of my video will be of 10G.... There's a point beyond which quality is not noticeable on such small screen, so reducing the bitrate doesn't make much of a difference.

I think I'll be perfectly happy playing 700 MB BR-RIPS with MXplayer! Thanks guys!
Just grab a 700MB or smaller torrent. A quick search for a popular movie showed blueray rips (BRRip) coming in at 450 MB. I have to think that futzing with ripping a 30-50GB blueray file in Handbrake easily equals the time, effort, and CPU cycles it would take for a typical 400-700MB torrent movie to download? While the screen may be HD on your phone, it is doubtful your eyes could discern much difference in quality on a 4-5 inch screen. The thought police may not like it if you are in the dying empire however.
Since I'm on a limited net connection which isn't very fast, it's cheaper and easier for me to convert videos than to re download them. Plus I got a beefy computer so it gets to flex it's muscle.

Reason I don't play 720mkv on my iPad is a) space b) increased processing power and battery consumption, because it has to work harder

Hi Devs and my friends...just thoughth of what would be the best HD video setting for galaxy S...is it,
1200X800 at mp4 format or what else.
Inviting your discussions on the same. Could you please come on guys and discuss on this and also the best video converter for Galaxy S
Thanks
There wouldn't seem to be much point in making it larger than 854*480p, given the screen size....

Use AVS Video Converter (latest release)...
1. Select "To MP4"
2. make profile with 800*480...1500 bit [email protected] or 29.7 fps
Check...I am going to upload the entire ripped "Avatar Movie" @600mb piece for your ready ref...its HD while viewing with default video player of Galaxy S!
any question...please ask
I just set up handbrake with some iPad presets, and i think they would be perfect for the galaxy s as well. The iframe option is less than full 720p, but it should be mpre than good enough for displaying on the galaxy screen.
Unless encoding 1080p content, i don't see any point in encoding stuff for the galaxy s.
it reads just about anything.

I've been using the same settings in Handbrake. Even with bit rates around 1800-2000bps it plays really well (colour me impressed). Have set audio to 128kbps AAC, as there isn't much point going above that with just headphones on.
I have to say having come across from the Milestone the screen on this thing is sumptuous. I'll never be able to go back to LCD.

Yeah, but obsessive-compulsive freaks like me (and I'm sure a few others here) just have to go for the optimal experience. Considering this thing is such a monster I think it does it justice to see what it's capable of.
Good point, but you do want to transcode blu rays. Im not sure how though.

Nah. I meant anything above 128kbps, sorry. On my Milestone I used to use 96kbps but since the SGS is such a beast I figured 'what the hell?'
I have spent time on this, trying many ways as I want a great picture, so on any 1080p and 720p films I go for XMedia Recode/custom/mp4 h264/high/4.1/2 pass at 2000 bit/deblocking low/1280 by 720/mp3 192...I need this as I use sure headphones and they need good input/it works out at around 1gig or just under per hour you do, yes its lots of space but again there is new memory cards on the way (talk of tosh having made a 120gig nand chip) picture is great and its future proof for other mobiles in future as I dont want to have to do them again anytime soon, also on this setting it removes all black bars when the phone plays it (they remain if you watch on tv) but I also guess there is better ways but I just want good picture, and I did read there is problem with how our phone reads blacks, it uses the graphic chip which at the moment has problems understanding shades of black in lower than hd movies, this in turn leads to blocking but only in dark films, one guy found a way to pass this and says picture is great and blocking is almost gone in good rips but he did not state how to do this, so guess rest of us need someone or samsung to fix this, maybe on their first firmware download?
I don't see a point to re-encode movies if SGS reads every single one...

Because there are optimal settings for best quality/clarity.
we suffer from a cap of 4gb, no files bigger than that because of fat32 not letting us move bigger movie files, 720p movies sit around 6 7 8 gigs and 1080p around 10 12 13...some even more.
I just download 720p rips of tv episodes, anime and sports and drop the mkv directly into there.
If it is a movie and its below 4gb 720p i drop the mkv directly in there
If its a movie bigger i just use the hd encoder found here on xda and just do standard 800*480 with hd input.
Of if the movie has a 480 version ... ill grab that instead.
But most of the times i just drop the mkv into there ... mainly movies with subtitles i use the hd encoder.
Is it possible to put ext2 on the microsd card to get around the 4GB limit?
It is a Linux phone, after all. It should be able to handle it.
OK,
I have just returned my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (16Gb) to the store after suffering the "Newtons Ring / Oil Spill" phenomenon, and after the store assistant told me that someone else had returned 2 with the same problem, and BOTH store display models have the same issues, I decided not to get a new one. So now I am in the market for a new tablet. (And to get rid of my Dock, Book cover and SD / USB Connection Kit, Dock - Used, Book Cover - Unopened and SD / USB Connection Kit - Unopened - but thats another story).
So I am thinking about moving away from Tegra 2 after having problems getting it to play High Profile HD video due to the underpowering of the Tegra 2 chipset.
I am considering the Archos G9, which has a Texas Instruments ARM dual-core CORTEX A9 OMAP 4 chip (1Ghz to 1.5Ghz), which Archos claim will play High Profile HD video.
Are there any tabs that you think I should consider?
I realise that this is a Galaxy Tab forum, but I have read some good advice from users of this forum section.
Thanks

This.
Add to it that they're big and heavy based on the published specs.
If you're not a big video (streaming and local) user the HTC Jetstream/Puccini is a great tablet. It'll probably be released in Europe this Fall.
If you want a good thin alternative to the Tab 10.1, the new OMAP-powered Toshiba AT200 looks like a good bet, if it releases in the near future.
I think you might need to wait for the next generation of tablets. The GT10 is as good as it gets right now. After the new year there will be several more options but as of now, there's nothing that will get you high profile video and build quality at the same time. A quick question about the newton rings: could you actually see them when the screen was turned on?

One of these two options.
Or you can get a Blackberry Playbook, I have one and it plays 1080p videos without a sweat, you can even multitask while the video is playing without a single frame being skipped!!! The HDMI output is the best of any tablet on the market, and the screen is top notch.

The Playbook is using the same OMAP CPU as the aforementioned Toshiba AT200, except clocked at 1GHz as opposed to the 1.2GHz of the Toshiba.
So if it can rattle through 1080p videos, there's a good chance the Toshiba will be able to as well.
It's the GPU, the PowerVR SGX GPUs are something pretty special.
Nope, not underpowered, just a crap video player supplied with the stock rom. I thought it was true until I found dice player. With dice I have had no trouble playing any video so far. The 4 gb file size limit is more of an issue that finding a proper video player.

No even with dice player, it can't play 1080p high profile video. Tegra 2 is so weak that it even stutters playing some YouTube videos.

Tegra2 only support H.264 [email protected] and no weighted prediction B-frames.
For me thats okay, no need to play higher resolution on the tab than 720p anyway. Only problem is having to recode high res videos.
And about the 4gig limit. You can copy larger files too, over wireless if you have the time. (which takes a ****load of time, is there any other way to copy larger files to the tab, and maybe even faster?)

The HP Touchpad can do it if somebody writes a decent media player for it. I've tried remuxing 1080p h264 videos (to reencode the audio while keeping video intact) and it plays the videos very smoothly with stock player. Waiting patiently for Android to come so I can try DicePlayer and others with the TouchPad.

Never understood the desire to play full 1080p monster video files on a tablet. I love watching full size on my huge plasma but on the tablet it is just a waste to play such a large file. I batch encoded some for playimg on the tablet for trip a while back with handbrake and all I had to do was limit three bit rate. The video looked perfect and with dice player it never stuttered.
Each to hire one I guess, but this is much better than watching on my phone and the form factor is perfect.

It's just a matter of convenience. Would you prefer reencode all the videos if it could be avoided? And not everybody has a computer fast enough to do so quickly. On my intel E8400, a 2hour movie will take about half a day.
It's an extra step that should be unnecessary. It limits how you can use your tab since you just can't drag & drop videos on a whim not knowing if it'll play. Also it's not awaste if you're using it to feed an hdtv.
Were people expecting the first generation tablets to be blu ray players too? This is complaining just for the sake of complaining.
Sent from xda premium app
I don't see the point playing 1080p video on tablet either. Speaking of convenient, I think it's more convenient just to download smaller 720p videos and not have to worry about file size and such.

I bought this tablet for two things.
I cannot save money.
My girlfriend moved four states away (NY to VA) and I wanted something to do while on the train for 7 hours. I did nothing on it for 14 hours total but watch movies (OTG cable) and play solitaire. It does both awesome!
Screen is great, headphone jack is nice. If the 10" was cheap I would buy one too!
Battery life while watching movies isn't stellar, however nothing is
Best small portable movie player I know of.
Use headphones in a noisy environment - helps the sound a lot.
I am fond of MxPlayer from the app store - plays .avi movies (ripped DVD format) without converting.
I also happen to think it's perfect for watching movies - having used both a phone and Xoom for comparison. I think the 7" form factor is perfect for tablets since you can comfortably hold the thing in one hand.

Works great for movies, when rooted you can use an OTA cable and stickmount and play off external storage. However, I think external storage taxes the battery a bit more than on-board storage.
Root, stickmount, MXPlayer, VLC, and you're set.
Use dice player. Or mobo player best two video apps on android. On my 16gb ver without ocing I can play 720p h264 flac or aac audio with subs without any issues what so ever with dice player. As 720p h264 with flac or aac is really taxing and you need a high end device and the nexus7 fitted that to the T. smooth frame rate none or extremely little frame skip is not really noticeable at all unless you are looking for it and even if you are its hard to notice.
Best experience with video watching to date for me with android devices. Droid x2 was OK in the video department cause it had the tegra 2 and the dinc2 is just pathetic with its adreno 205. But this nexus7 plays videos much better them my own laptop. And my laptop is not really a pushover either. 380 dedicated vram, 4gb of ram, 1 tb 5400rpm HDD, dual core 1.9ghz turion (sp?). And this thing does the job either the same or little bit better or little bit worse depending on the video file. So far I have 1 video that won't play. But I think it was encoded improperly because only my PC with cccp with mpc can play it with no problems.
But highly recommended. And especially with dice and mobo player it should be hard to find and issues.

I have to add - ES Browser is great for movies on your lan. I have a 500gb drive on my router (always on) with all my movies.
ES Browser sees this storage, and clicking on a movie launches MX Player. All .avi movies. Perfect playback.

It's perfect to watch movies. The colors may not be perfect but the image is pretty sharp. The only disadvantage is that the screen is not very visible outside with sun directly at it. But this is with pretty much everything. It's also very portable and comfy to watch a movie. Specially if you have to hold it in your hand

This is the seventh reply to verify the Nexus 7 is great for watching movies. I use the Dice player for h264 720p HD movies. After the 32GB is full, the Nexus Media Importer App and an OTG cable lets you stream movies from a USB flash drive. No rooting required.

Preset: Android High
Picture Height: 1280

You don't have to encode anything. Just put the video file onto the device and you're good to go.
I recommend either: DICE Player or MX Video Player.

Thanks! I should mention that i'm also moving from iOS to Android with the N4.
I will need to downsample since a lot of my movies are in 1080p format or blu-ray remux (35GB). The teeny tiny 16GB N4 won't quite suffice

I use AVC H.264 codec with "Baseline Profile" for video, and AAC codec for audio in a MP4 container.
You will need to do tests with your encoder at various bit rates to find the best quality.
I use Avidemux on Ubuntu myself, but there are a lot of encoders out there for Windows and Mac.
For more info on "Baseline Profile" settings, see:

Personally, I prefer lower screen resolutions (which give a better Q factor and more stable bit rate). I would test 640 x 360 (50% the built in video recorder) as a starting point. The best thing to do is test with a short video (3 minute music video) and create several tests at different bit rates.
If the bit rate gets too high, the video will stutter, or just freeze.

I would start with 1500 kbps as a max and 640 kbps as a min for video bitrate.
For audio, I normally use 96 or 128 kbps for AAC.
