Where is my system folder and files - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Unlike my previous galaxy phones, where Samsung conveniently allows access to system files via Settings, there seems to be no such acess on Nexus 7. Where on earth can I access them?? Why Google make this so hard?

Download es file explorer.

Thanks, but can't I do that without using 3rd party apps? Why stock Android doesn't allow viewing system files directly?
So inconvenient

Droid X wont download zip files?

Is there any way to get rid of this restriction with the zip files and other files as well.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Hi,
I don't know of a native method of removing that restriction, but the free app Byte Tornado downloader integrates with the browser and allows almost any file to download directly to the phone.
I hope that helps.

Down Droid on market. Just a download manager. Nothing else.

download Astro from the market or appbrain then you can download zip files and extract the apk files from the zip. It's also a great utility app to manage files and backup applications.
I use opera browser to download files. It how's never given me any problems.

Sadly the stock browser restricts a lot of downloads: .zips (and many .apk's if not all).
Probably there to "protect" itself.
But any third party web browser
(Dolphin HD or Opera) can do those kinds of files.
That is if you don't wish to use a download manager app.
Hope this helped someone!

AOKP ROM usually has this as an option (not sure if it's in there yet--they're still on build 1, officially).
Thanks! Do you know if there is a stand alone hack for it?

Thanks for the link, that was helpful!
How i do it..
you must have root .
Copy the system ui.apk out and save it to your desktop ( do not move it)
open the file in 7 zip... browse to the folder that has the .png files you want to change.. (DO NOT UNZIP OR EXTRACT)
Copy the dpi folder your making changes to the .png files within.. to a new folder .
Edit the .png files.. (you can also edit xml. notepad++ (use caution..)
I use photo shop and paint shop pro to edit the files..
Open the original system ui file up.. browse back to the directory where the folder you copied out is at .. DO NOT UNZIP OR EXTRACT
PAST THE Edited file back into the zip...
push it back to your tablet .
using file manager put it back in the system/app folder where you found it..
YOUR TABLET WILL CRASH WHEN YOU SAVE IT HERE ( THIS IS EXPECTED ..) REBOOT WITH HOLDING THE POWER BUTTON..
YOUR tablet will reboot showing the changes you have made. If you mess up you can adb push the unmodified system ui back and reboot .
This is a very dirty quick how to hope its understandable..
good luck
Thanks for that but I did it using metamorph like the link says.

[Q] saved apps

Where do you find apps you have download? I want to move some to my system apps but can't find download ones. I'm on glazed ROM 2.1 and can't find the folder using root browser. Any help would be great.
If you've downloaded them from a third party site then they'll appears in "Download" folder.
If you've downloaded them from the Play Store then they'll be in /Android/data

There from play store and there not under data in android folder. I never have had a problem finding them until I went to glazed ROM
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Found it was in the data/ app folder
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
/Android/data is for app's "data", i.e. settings and whatever else the app saves.
Yeah, all installed apps (no matter from where they originally came) are in /data/app.
System apps are in (big surprise :cyclops: ) /system/app
Just saying.

unable to send apk via Bluetooth

I have also noticed that. Even with es explorer I am not able to send apk files. Work around which I use is to change the extension to .mp3 or anything which can be sent and change back to. Apk in receiver phone.

It works fine using Root Explorer.
I had problem sending apk file to my friend too. Doesn't work even if using Root explorer. I'm using nexus 4 while my friend is using galaxy nexus.

Create a Dropbox link?
It seems to be inbuilt limitation by Google, possibly to prevent malicious users to push malware onto other people's phones.
I installed Bluetooth transfer app and now it works well. Tried transferring apk from laptop to phone and it works fine.

Same problem here.
If I try to send an apk between a Galaxy Nexus (JB4.3) and a Nexus 7 (2012 JB4.3) the transfer fails. (es file explorer / apk share / root browser)
Seems that the bluetooth just blocks apk transfers. If I rename the file, it works.
Is a 4.3 security feature? I use to transfer apk before the 4.3.
I think it is a google limitation for prevent to share the pirate apps

Stopped by for a chat about 8 years later, yah rename worked back then during gba color and stuff now doesn't work

ES File Explorer works fine for this. Your device needs to be rooted to get R/W access otherwise it won't work. If you are rooted then in ES hit the app menu and tap Root Explorer. It should prompt for superuser access and then set all to RW. Should let you move apk to system/app folder now.
link has removed. Can you upload in new link?
