Is there an easy way to get something VERY close to stock final ICS but with root and cwm?
I'm not a fan of custom kernels and custom roms.

if you are unlocked to don't have to keep the custom kernel. you can just hotboot the kernel, flash the zip and then reboot and it will be like you never flashed the kernel but you will be rooted.

Huh?
Yes, I have a unlocked bootloader, but can you flesh out the above details a little bit, as it makes no sense to me
Simple
Flash.custom kernel.with flashtoll
Download superuser.zip from doomed151 in original thread
Flash the superuser.zip through cwm
Download busybox from market
There you have root

You need fastboot.exe. If you have it then first download the SuperUser zip file from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24825517&postcount=105
And put it on your SD card.
Then download any kernel that has CWM support. There is one here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24826349&postcount=110
Then put your phone into fastboot mode (turn it off then plug it in while holding the Back button - the LED will turn BLUE - if it doesn't then try plugging in while holding the MENU button instead, I can never remember which one it is).
Then copy the kernel to your device like this:
fastboot boot recoveryARC.img
Your device will reboot - when the SONY logo goes bright start spamming the VOLUME DOWN button to enter Recovery.
Then flash the SuperUser.zip file from your SD card. Unplug the phone, reboot and you have root access. You should then head to Google Play and download Busybox Installer and install the latest release.
Good luck.
Isn't this the naff Chinese leaked build? Not the final one?
I think i'll wait for the dust to settle, too much hacking and failure stories right now, along with "fluff" from leaked betas and prereleases and lt15i owners trying to get stuff working.
This is the final release. I love it FWIW.
However, installing it was a PITA - I bricked my device three times before I got it right using Flashtool. But it's worth it - I've been running the beta since it was released and the performance of the final release is MUCH better.
Plus they seem to have supercharged the launcher - I'm only getting a redraw if I've been running a heavy game (Temple Run for example). The beta version would reload the launcher a lot.
There will be a new version of Flashtool that will allow the official FTF to be flashed without all the hassle - might be worth waiting for. The issue is with changing the partition table or something.
only fastboot doomkernel
then install su by recovery
then flash stock kernel by flash tool & exclude all other option
and reboot

Well, there IS one-click-root method, hmm... 3 clicks actually, for stock ICS ROM without unlocking your bootloader.
Here is the link.

You may not know Chinese, but I personally don't intend to translate it and write an instruction because I am not the pioneer who needs to be respected.

Hey guys,
So basically, i rooted using using a guide i found here on XDA, worked great, did it with CWM.zip and SU-Busybox-Installer.zip, Went real easy for a noob like me!
The problem ive got now, i dont seem to have a proper copy of CMW recovery installed, just the stock recovery.
This wouldnt be too much of a problem, however i read the follow :
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/insta...xy-note-on-xxlpy-ice-cream-sandwich-firmware/
This is worrying, it sounds to be more difficult to install a proper CMW recovery than it is too root on this build number : IML74K.XXLPY
Overall, all im aiming for this Kernel :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749863
And this ROM :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716088
(Performance, stock rom with a little OC basically, if you know easier/better combinations, please link them!)
If any of u clever folk know where i can find me some idiot friendly information/links/guides to pull what (I think) is a mammoth task, please feel free to point me in the right way.
Thanks in advance, Sorry for what might seem like daft questions
Is downgrading to GB a must or can i just install a new ROM with mobile ODIN pro?

*#272*Device IMEI# works for me, should have guessed that it was the netherlands GB rom, CSC 'zen', ill download that tonight then.and all i gotta do is flash with pc odin?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
What you should do is:
- Download a GB rom from SamMobile, Preferably a directly rootable one (i suggest KKA).
- Download ODIN
- Flash the GB Rom via Odin (open the rom in the PDA section), don't worry flashing an official rom wont raise your flash counter.
- Download the InitialCFRootFlasher.zip and this CF-Root Kernel.
- Extract the files (repeat for the zImage).
- Place the zImage file from the CF-Root kernel in the zImage folder from InitialRootFlasher.
- Start "not-rooted-yet.bat" and follow the instructions.
When finished you will have a rooted GB rom.
Next you would like to flash the ICS LPY Rom.
- Download the LPY ROM.
- Download the CF-Root Kernel.
- Extract the files (repeat for the zImage)
- Place both files on your SD card.
- Install MobileOdin.
- Install the Device Specific files.
- Press 'Open File' and select the LPY Rom.
- Press 'Kernel' and select the zImage.
- Enable EverRoot, SuperSU , Inject Mobile ODIN and Wipe Dalvic cache.
- Flash firmware.
When rebooted you will have a rooted LPY rom with CWM and busybox.
Dont mix the zImages up or else your screwed.
I do not take credit for this tutorial ,this is thanks to Chainfire and his hard work so if you like it, please donate to him.
Is it not necessary to download a GB rom one with a matching csc?

These CF-Root kernels are stock kernels modified by Chainfire. He pre-rooted the kernel and added CWM, BusyBox and SuperSU. These kernels are considered safe if you stick to the tutorial by the letter!!.

Hey guys, followed by the book, cant even get past the initial setup screen, just crashes every application it tries to start as soon as i 'press the android', so im stuck at the moment, hopefully its not beyond rescue!
EDITED: So, i did a factory reset as i was already GB, works fine, flashed ICS LPY with mobile odin, got CWM and busybox, now its time to flash the custom ROM, which option in PC odin so i select for choosing the kernel zimage?
is it bootload/pda/phone or csc. according to the guide for the rom im interested in which is in my OP, i need to flash kernel FIRST
thanks so far guys, all the information has been correct and im almost done
One more thing though, the samsung keyboard is still typing null on key entry on this ICS also, is this something i should worry about? i prefer swiftkey either way!
Im now running a custom ROM and Kernel, scary stuff, but so much more comfortable with the process now, this is due to Lodi and Baz77, Many thanks to you both!

Google was able to do so; they called it the JOP40D->JDQ39 OTA.
azoller1 & i3s released several attempts at it before giving up and turning the thread into a "howto with fastboot" guide.
Doing it with fastboot is trivial, but I suppose there is some reason you are trying to avoid that.

Okay, but this is general section, not Q/A and should be there but today is Friday and I am tremendously happy lol
1. Download 4.4 Radio and 4.4 ROM. (say thanks to Imperticus)
2. Put both zips in your sdcard
3. Go to recovery and do: wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik and format system (optional, advisable for upgrading to 4.4)
4. Flash Radio.zip
5. Flash ROM
U don't need any gapps since this is a factory image...
If you want a rooted/deodexed/busybox ROM download this one in stead of the other (say thanks to fireb33)
If u have any problem just let me know.

ive gone and broken everything
ive never had issues updating various cyanogen versions once originally installed clockwork recovery. always been as simple as downloading and transferring the zip to SD and booting to recovery and installing from SD when i didnt do the auto updates which still took me to recovery at reboot. but i got impatient for the 4.4 version which reading from cyanongen is in no hurry to release because just released milestone version of 4.3. I downloaded the 4.4 zip right from google and tried installing it from SD like i always did after doing all the various wipes. The google factory image wasnt even recognized by clockwork. so doing some googling got here with steps to radio and os images got them transferred over and booted to recovery and they were at least selectable. got radio to go through. the actual os got error 7 during install, which doing even more googling said should edit a file in the zip contents. Too bad now cant get past the google logo and goes right back to recovery menus for me to transfer editted zip file for the error 7 problem. So im at least partially bootable but no clue how the heck to get myself out of this mess ive gotten myself into due to my impatience and wanting latest and greatest for my nexus 4. would love any help in how to undo problem i caused because the whole adb thing is foreign to me

I'm trying to get my BLU Studio Energy 2 to install the new wireless update after having rooted my phone using the guide here. In an attempt to get the update installed, I did a full unroot in SuperSU, flashed the original recovery ROM you posted, ran the "root integrity check" from the bootloader successfully, and wiped the cache. When I reboot my phone and try to do the wireless update, I still get the "Your system is damaged, wireless update is disabled" message. I even tried copying the original V12 update zip you posted to my phone and told it to do a local update. It behaved as though it was installing fine, but upon rebooting my phone, now in the wireless update screen, it shows my current version to be V05. Is there something else I'm missing?

My Energy 2 has V08 and not V05.
So rooted phones has files that change or modify the original files and update process know when users have ROOT!
When The users flash custom recoveries not backup stock ROM. The users go to ROOT immediately and it's "damaged" stock ROM.
If you not modify/delete any files from stock ROM so should ROOT process that not go update to V12!!
