Dropped from around 1 meter device still works perfectly.
Is it possible to get a replacement and fix it myself?
If not, what's the best replacement tablet today? Primary use is media player... something with Note 2 hardware and 7.7 amoled screen would be perfect.
I love the 7.7 formfactor and the amoled screen
Toshiba have a Tegra 3 7.7 with amoled.

$329 for the 16GB version at Newegg right now....seems like a great deal. Tegra 3, Super AMOLED Plus screen, and lightly skinned ICS.
It might be less expensive to get a replacement glass with digitizer.

The Toshiba is nice (I have one), but:
1. The bootloader is locked and no root is available (to the best of my knowledge).
2. Oddly enough the AMOLED screen is not calibrated as nicely as the Samsung. Darker grays have a greenish tint. The problem is easily seen in black and white photographs. Color depth may also be an issue. Some of screen filter apps can help a little bit.
3. The tablet has some sort of auto power save/screen optimization that cannot be turned off (I've tried) that results in changes of brightness and tint when scrolling via the web browser. I've tried other web browsers, same result.
4. As reported by others, the camera is mediocre at best.

Here you go.
Pricey though

thanks
but yeah, way too expensive, I'll rather buy a new one if that's the price for a replacement screen
I changed the screen on my 7.7 this summer, it's a fairly easy tablet to repair.
The AMOLED screen is laminated to the digitizer, so there i NO way you can change it and you have to buy the whole digitizer/amoled/frame assembly and thats why it so pricey
I had to pay 250$ incl.shipping on ebay for the parts
If you have any problems when replacing the screen, just reply in this tread an I will try to help you
thanks
does the 7.7 have gorilla glass?
I was surprised it broke that way, it wasn't a hard fall...

No gorilla glass, but still high quality. The ebay part is original samsung.
The only tricky step when changing is to separate the volumebuttons ribbon from the frame without damaging it, apply some heat in order to soften the glue
aw it hurts to see all that broken glass..hope you could fix it well..might as well take further care to avoid that same fate

How is the video codec support on the Excite 7.7?
I use MX video player on the Samsung and it plays pretty much everything I've thrown at it
I have the 7.7 and the new N8000 , and the 7.7 is probably 10% slower then N8000. So the 7.7 is f..... good piece of hardware. I don't believe in Tegra.

Wow, this has me tempted to convert my grey tab to all white using parts. Didn't even think about doing that. Would love to have my Tab match my white E4GT.
Is there any confirmation that the "OEM" white ones on eBay are Gorilla Glass. I believe the production GT10's are supposed to be.
I only ask because my IO Galaxy Tab has a nasty scratch. I wasn't sure if it wasn't necessarily Gorilla Glass because of it's preproduction status or if the Glass on the GT10 is inherently soft. I know Corning lists the device on its list of Samsung devices although who knows how OEM the eBay glass really is.

I can't state for sure but pat of me says who cares. I've written gorilla glass off as marketing hype. I've had my White Epic 4G Touch since launch day and I already have several small but noticeable in the right light/angle scratches on my supposed Gorilla Glass digitizer. I have a case on my phone and take as best of care of it as I can. I've always passed on screen protectors on most glass displays but this is the second device I've had now where typical in and out of jeans pocket use has resulted in scratches on my digitizer.
I've started to think Gorilla Glass helps in drop and impact scenarios but not really in the scratch department.
Sorry if my post comes off as a bit of a rant...I'm just a tad frustrated by said scratches.

Many people are mad with them for SGS(+) and Ice Cream Sandwich
I don't really care what size the screen is or how many gigaflops it's millions of cores can produce, just don't make it look like crap or make it out of something that creaks if you even glance at it.
Truth is that I will not replace my i9000 to S3 until S3 will be made differently I mean like steel all around (including screen frame) with carbon fiber battery cover, if it is going to be better - it should be better in every single way not just specs. I use my i9000 like an egg and it already have scratches on frame close to usb input and back cover because of my nail. No scratches on screen but i have tiny little dot on glass i do not know how it got there. Samsung was going with galaxy series very well - time to make a quad core tank with lifetime usage possibilities.

So your main criterion for choosing a phone is how it looks?
I've been waiting for this... Will it be the one for real?
surely will have great spec, but just wondering if it's worth its size??? not sure if will replace my SGS (one) or simply buy a tablet to meet my need for internet browsing while on the move... and hope the battery will last for 24hrs of normal usage (two emails/calendars sync on, various apps, internet etc) without looking for power outlet mid-day. My SGS hardly last for one day on one charging...
You could fit a 4.6" screen on a phone around the size of the i9000 if you ditched hard keys and had the screen almost edge-to-edge. I won't buy a phone you need to wear on your belt.e
What's the story with new phones coming in at 4.6"+ displays?
I would think the original galaxy S at 4'' was superb fit for pocket and portability. Increase that to 320ppi with a superamoled HD display and voila we have new SGSIII.
I can't see why they going for such big displays. I even have the 4.3"" HD2 and that's the max I would see for a phone.
There will be disappointment and exhilaration with this release. Either way I am buying this regardless....
EDIT: I am hoping for Wolfson DAC in the audio output. It must have this dac..

Not at all, we all know this thing is going to be a beast of a phone, so I have no worries about it's performance, but I want something that doesn't look like it was designed by an art student trying to be "edgy"
But it is getting to the point now where they will all be more powerful than any of us realistically need for the near future, so the look (OLED vs TFT is becoming more of a non-issue) is the only real thing that's going to differentiate them. I don't like the HTC aesthetic, it's just boring to me, Sony have gone all bling again and others like Motorola just seem to design their phones for corporate boardrooms.
Samsung just seem stuck trying to refine the "not iPhone" shape of the SGS 1 in Europe, and it's getting a little boring, time for something new. And it will probably save them a few quid if Apple can't keep suing them because of a physical home button.

I read somewhere that this is a residual issue caused by the bonding glue they use t to attach the glass, they should fade as the glue dries, but keep any eye on it and nuke 'em if it doesn't!
Yeh galaxy nexus has a similar thing its the amoled display some of the pixals are not turning fully of, I think that was the conclusion .
But only noticeable in very dark room with the screen black and when your eyes adjust. Could be wrong without a pic I can't say.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I think its an inherent flaw with AMOLED panels. It looks like patches of the screen do not go as dark as the rest of the screen.
Some screens are brighter than others in general though, among the same phone. This Nexus was brighter than another one I had at the same time, at both lowest and highest settings, and had less black dots on black screen, presumably because the screen was brighter overall.
Doesn't mean to say I won't check for the problem before I purchase though

These are touch sensors. It's normal.
Since the N4 has thinner glass than most current phones, these dots are more visible than they are in other phones.
Edit: also some LG technology that embedded these in the glass or something. Tech jargons. But every Nexus 4 is like that. It's not a defect.
Yep, I got the same thing

Thanks everyone. This is my first upgrade after many years. Was just trying to be on the safe side :highfive:
I knew what these were when I first saw them, but I'm surprised they exist. I thought the touch sensors were part of the display on these new LG panels. No?
I think it's more to protect the glass from UV discoloration of the glass. That's why x gear live did this on their glass protector for the galaxy nexus.
I think they look cool.
I Got It Also! Its also visible when the screen is lit, but you have to find them. Is this normal? All N4 has this? Why I can't see this on my iPad, and other touch devices?

the gorilla glass 2 is thinner, its normal to see that under direct sunlight,
I'm fairly certain that these dots have something to do with the IPS display in the N4.
My Asus tf700 (transformer infinity) has these same dots, which are only visible at certain angles, with high ambient light. It is also an IPS display. I remember reading somewhere about them, but I forget what the actual purpose of these dots are.
This has been discussed many times guys...a simple search will tell you it's because of the thinner display design more specifically the digitizer.

Completely normal, nothing to worry about. I've had this happen with some phones I had.
Was at local Verizon store yesterday and saw quite a difference in LCD color between my own Droid Mini and the store display units.
My screen was brighter at 100% and warm in color vs. the 3 display units which were more coolish blue and slightly dimmer at 100%.
What color temp is your droid mini?

I was thinking the same thing. Just wish i had another mini to compare. Another thing I noticed is that my screen has contrast a tad bit over sharpened compared to the demo units.
It doesnt bother me but was enough to notice when i held them side by side.
Could this be something Motorola adjusted in the kernel or firmware? Is there an LCD panel contrast app we can get to adjust the setting manually?
It could be that they're using a different part for the lcd display now compared with when you bought yours.

interesting thread for me because i replaced my LCD and i was wondering if there were any differences in the models you can buy on ebay.
my experience: the one i got is very nice, very happy with it. great brightness, and YES warm. TOO warm. the reds are just crazy. i mean the droid thingy at start up just hurts your eyes at full brightness.
its definitely not calibrated well, i mean when i take selfies my skin looks very orange and red tinted, and i'm fairly pale. looks totally different and less red on my laptop (which has upwards of 95% adobe color gamut)
also not to derail this but is this the best forum to post about the mini? i can't find the forum for it. is it basically a smaller version of the droid ultra or something?
I think this is the best place to post about the mini.
I'm glad you have experience with replacing the LCD and seeing a different result.
I'm going through the same thing with my LG G2. I notice there's quite a difference in LCDs with these phones.
My G2 also has a difference in its LCD picture vs other G2s even on the same carrier.
With the G2 there's an app which tells what version LCD you have.
Wonder if there's a way to check what version LCD we have without opening the phone and literally going through a few of them to verify.

its definitely not calibrated well, i mean when i take selfies my skin looks very orange and red tinted, and i'm fairly pale. looks totally different and less red on my laptop (which has upwards of 95% adobe color gamut)
also not to derail this but is this the best forum to post about the mini? i can't find the forum for it. is it basically a smaller version of the droid ultra or something?

oh, to clarify, I didn't see a difference. I just know that it's very very red. if there are 2 models and one of them is more red, then this has to be the one.

If u can, try to stop by your local Verizon store. Compare your LCD with a display unit.
I saw the perfect screen today at another local store. This one was on a black mini.
Not too warm, not too cold but just right. Also noticed the contrast wasnt too rich and it had a nice color balance.
If my screen ever breaks, i would love to swap out this LCD for that one.
How difficult is the droid screen swap compared to other larger smart phone screen swaps?
