[Q] T-Mobile/AT&T/GSM on Razr M - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

P3Droid has successfully gotten the RAZR M to run on AT&T. But my question is this: If I have a 3G ATT sim, will it work? Has P3 released the how to yet? I know i'm being impatient but I really need it because I urgently need to use this on ATT since my 'Backup' phone has just reached the end of life.
Thanks to all Devs involved!

TBH you're better off with a Razr I (which is same handset with 3G GSM only, and intel proc - don't worry about benchies, anand has confirmed it runs great w/ actually better battery life than S4).
The Verizon Razr M won't work with AT&T 4G, so Razr I is equivalent basically, + is fully unlockable bootloader, + better battery life, + cheaper, = win

I already bought the developer edition of the razr m and all I need to do is wait for p3droid 2 release instructions.

wintermute000 posted the Aussie radio image in the fast boot thread.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8648738/NON-HLOS.bin
All that is needed is to flash that in fast boot with the following command: fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
Then insert the SIM and reboot and it should just work. You may need to select GSM/UMTS in Mobile Networks settings. The APN is set automatically by the SIM and the apns-config.XML by default has the necessary APNs included for ATT and T-Mobile.
We intend to post a more complete tutorial but are trying to understand more about how it works and what doesn't work under the AU radio.
P3Droid has VZW 4g data and CDMA1X voice but no 3g data. I have no service at all with VZW SIM because I am in a 3g only area.
It appears to break eHRPD authentication probably because that is not used on Australian networks and is a very problematic part of how VZW's network is deployed.
When we get it figured out a little better we will post more information.
Right now it's pretty straightforward. You use the AU radio for GSM/UMTS service but must flash back to the VZW radio for normal CDMA/LTE/EVDO service.

This is GREAT! I've been waiting for something like this, and I've been following the progress ... see also my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1973156&page=2 post #13
Just FYI, wintermute000 posted two images for the radio, one was zipped and dumped from mmcblk0p1, and the other is the one you linked to. I downloaded both and checked the MD5, they are the same.
Well, I think this is it, I'll get this phone, flash the radio, put my t-mobile sim in it, and cross my fingers ...

Let me know if you figure that one out.
I suppose we could always cover it up with a sticker or something.

I'm so mad that the aussie radio isn't compatible with my ATT card, can't connect to 2G, 3G, or 4G on ATT or TMO frequencies. Do I have to have the sim card out of the phone when I flash the radio cuz i left it in.

Dev Edition or retail?
Is voice working?
Did you go into settings and make sure the radio is set to GSM or WCDMA? Are you sure the APN is correct, or even there at all?

I researched APN a little bit.
When I type this into a new APN:
Name: StraightTalk ATT
APN: att.mvno
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMSC proxy: 66.209.11.33
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication Type: Not set
APN type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: IPv4
APN enable/disable: APN enabled (tick mark checked but grayed out anyways)
Bearer: Unspecified
I then press 'save' and it won't save the apn. Its as if the phone knows that its a Straight Talk APN and won't let it save. However, if i put random letters in each of the boxes, it lets me saves the APN. Any ideas as to why? Also which APN setting will work with the Aussie Radios?

Well, it doesn't look like you're supposed to be leaving the Proxy and Port blank.

Do you have any other APN I can use other than straight talk? I have a 4G ATT card inserted in my Dev Razr M. I can't connect at all to any service when i search and i already flashed the aussie radio
Edit: I see that my MNC and MCC codes have to be the same as found on the sim card otherwise the APN won't save. How do I know what those codes are for ATT 4g?

You can Google for the AT&T and T-Mobile ones, but it won't help you any to put a different carrier's APN in. If you're on Straight Talk, you need to be using Straight Talk's APN.

Thanks for your help, I truly appreciate it. I'm not on Straight Talk. So I guess I have to look up the APN values for ATT 4G. But is it even possible for me to get anything from 2G or better running on the Aussie radios. Like does the radio support those frequencies?

Yes, the radio supports those frequencies. If it flashed correctly, and the correct APN is used, it will work.

What crazy is that i tried all MNC and MCC codes for ATT such as 310 and 410 and others yet it won't save. I'm going to try reflashing the radio

After I do the command 'fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin' and it says something along the lines of Sending modem...OKAY and Writing modem....OKAY 30 Seconds Finished......it must've worked then. But at reboot it still says sim is from invalid source so I've narrowed the problem donw to the APN settings.

I hear invalid SIM source is from the stock ROM. It is probably to annoy you and keep you on Verizon.

Yes. You'll still need to figure out how to configure your APN but it'll stop that invalid sim message from popping up.

G1 + Cyanogen 4.2.8 + att = not working

Hi folks,
I bought a Cingular GoPhone cellphone and i want to use the line on my G1. The problem is that the G1 doesn't register the sim card on att's network. The crappy phone works fine though.
When going to "Wireless Controls > Mobile Networks > Network operators > Search networks" i am getting att's network listed, so i guess the phone is able to scan for networks. Since my sim card is an att's, the phone should be able to register the sim card to At&t network, but i'm getting "Your sim card does not allow a connection to this network" error. Same error when trying the "Select Automatically" option.
I've been google'ing but could't find a solution, even though there is a lot of threads going back and forth.
Here is my configuration info:
Phone: T-Mobile G1 ( Dream PVT 32B DREA10000), Unlocked, Rooted.
Sim Card: AT&T (Cingular), 1 week old.
Firmware: CyanogenMod 4.2.8
Build Number: DRC83
Radio: 2.22.18.26I
HBoot: 1.33.2005
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Have you already forgotten that G1 is locked to Tmo?
You need the unlock code for it to be used on other carriers.
Plus G1 will only beable to use 2G on att.
Cyan has a new version out now.
The phone is unlocked. I have been using it with south american carriers without any problems.
I don't need 3g right now. ( gophone line )

Wiped, flashed with ( http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Latest_version#Defanged_DRC83 ), and then flashed newest Cyanogen ( 4.2.11.1 ).
Still no luck.
Getting the same exact error while registering the sim card.
Thanks

i have an unlocked g1 with att and i had no network problems with cyanogens roms.
Try checking the "2G only" box in data settings. It might be tring to sign into AT&T's 3G voice network, which IIRC, is not a supported feature on GoPhone accounts.

Do you know what spectrum or frequencies your phone runs at? Sometimes they don't include the international spectrum's (or american)if the phone is imported. Nokia has a few phones that needed a North American version they usually have the NAM title next to there name to show they support the American spectrums.

I don't know. I bought the phone in the US, though. Guess it should work.
I remember playing around with SPL and radio images while trying a custom rom with rosie UI, but it looks that the versions posted in the first message should work just fine.

Yeah but he's saying his phone is from South America. I'm sure yours wasn't
The phone is from the US. I bought it on ebay, shipped and used in south america.
I just came up with something that actually match all the sympthoms.
Maybe this is happening because the phone IMEI be banned from att's network.
Is there any way i can find out if the phone is reported as stolen or something like that ?

Mine is also mostly blank, is it because I used my old 3g sim, or maybe these settings only work if you pay for the tethering option?
When I choose AT&T US HSPDA I don't have internet access at all.

I'm using that APN with the same settings and my 3G sim out of my 3GS with no issues. You may need to validate the data plan you have with AT&T. Since I was on the Enterprise iPhone Unlimited plan, they moved me to the Smartphone Data Unlimited 4G Plan with 200 SMS. Not sure what plan you're on, but maybe that has something to do with it.....

3g Data Loss (Not signal loss)

So i noticed since installing custom rom, that my 3g data no longer works, the signal is fine, i can make/receive calls but as for data, market/internet anything requiring a connection it just does not work unless connected to a wifi network, and before you ask! yes i was able to do it before from stock so its not a service provider plan issue lol.
First, is the mobile data on the phone itself turned on? I know from using a few different rom they have the ability to turn off just mobile data.
Other than that, I know verizon has had some problems which only required an ESN swap (changing the phone connected to your account to another phone, then back to your current phone is the process to do this), but I also see from your profile that you are on Telus, so I merely offer these two options in hopes that one may help.
well i haven't checked that actually, lol so i will, but i'm on a telus network if i could make a sig lol id have that info sorry haha. Oh yea it is displayed there haha my bad.
k just checked, am i in the right place (just to make sure) Settings -> wireless and network -> mobile network ->3g Packet Data ON
and if so, still no luck.
How do i do this ESN swap?
Yeah that's the correct information, if you haven't done it already, I would at least try toggling it off then back on and see if that fixes it.
After that, as I said before, I don't know much about the Telus Fascinate but I'm sure that there are a few developers or people experienced with Telus Fascinate lurking around the forums that may be able to help. Sorry I couldn't help you more.
That's Okay, lol the ESN swap is it difficult? maybe its the same for telus as verizon..
for verizon a person could log into their online account and switch to an older phone, then switch back. I personally had to take my phone to Best Buy and they could do the ESN swap for me there.
Again not sure on telus......but you can change the esn by a number up or down and not use another phone. I have completed this process several times when I have lost 3g. You will force repartion of data.

It sounds like your having the same problem iv been having. If your 3G icon is disappearing a dmu reset should fix your problem.the esn swap is a way of resetting your dmu but I find it easier to just call into tech support and tell them to do it. If they refuse make them or hang up and call again. Once you get some one who will do it it takes 2min.

LOL wait... ESN swap is for CDMA phones. Telus is GSM.
OP, you didn't flash a Verizon Fascinate ROM onto your Telus model, did you? If so, you need to do a full stock Odin including GSM modem.
Hence not on sure on telus. Obviously esn is of no help with gsm. Thanks for the info.

The esn swap worked perfectly, however, when I used *228 with option 2 (update roaming capabilities) the next day, my 3g started dropping again. Did another esn swap, and its been fine now for 4 days. I did use the *228 option 1 both times and nothing changed... only when I used option 2 the first time did my 3g start dropping again.

This was part of a Black Friday deal, therefore it has nothing to do with the pricing in other countries. Amazon even had a 50" TV for $149 and there were many other deals...
yea, it's the bestbuy black friday $9.99 deal. It's even cheaper than usb or mp3 player. BEST DEAL

Any way to get rid of Verizon activation that pops up every reboot?
This is for certain type of Best Buy customers.. requires some type of special account i heard.
I'm trying to bypass now. Wish me luck (getting on a regular Verizon account)
I managed to buy a couple of these for the Family plan on T-Mobile. I should receive them in a few days, so I'm doing my research now I've read the thread on switching the phone to GSM. Here's the plan so far. Any feedback is welcome:
- Put in Tmo sim and microSD
- Switch to GSM
- Subscribe to TMo Family plan (over internet or call in?)
- After activation, turn off update to 5.1 (do I need band 12 in southern CA? If not, any problems with updating to 5.1 ota?)
- Remove Verizon apps
Did I miss anything?

I recently switched two of these over to T-Mobile's family plan, and it isn't as easy as you might expect, although still very manageable.

After this, I ran into an issue with the network connection flickering. I'd have 4G LTE for a second, then no signal, back and forth. To solve this, I followed these instructions:

I'll elaborate and include what to do to get it to work with T-mobile mvno:
Download the Network app from the store.
Tap the square button on the bottom right of the phone to bring up all recent apps, and clear away everything.
Go to settings -> more -> cellular networks. Notice "Preferred network type" is on lte/cdma. Leave this screen alone.
Tap the circle button at the bottom of the phone to get to the home page.
Open the Network app.
Near the bottom you can "Set preferred network type." It'll be set on lte/cdma.
Below that, there's "turn off radio".
Turn off the radio, and then change the preferred network type to lte/gsm.
Tap the square button to bring up the recent apps, and tap the "cellular networks" screen that you were on earlier.
See if "Preferred network type" has changed to "global". If it has, then the following steps will work. If it hasn't, then skip to the bottom.
Tap the square button and go back to the Network app. Turn on the radio.
Quickly tap the square button and go back to the cellular networks screen.
When "4G LTE" shows up in the notification area, quickly tap "global" and you'll have the choice of 4G, 3G, 2G. Hurry and tap 4G before "4G LTE" disappears.
Now you've got 4GLte, and you'll just need to add an apn as well as select your network operator.
4G still works for me after a reboot. I'm on Consumer Cellular (T-mobile mvno), if it matters. I'm sending/receiving texts and calls, and data works.
If it doesn't say "global", then go back to the Network app, pick some other preferred network type, like lte/gsm/cdma, and try this again.
To get "global," you'll need some combination of turning the radio on and off, and picking lte/gsm or lte/gsm/cdma.
Maybe turn off the radio, pick lte/gsm, turn on the radio, THEN "global" shows up. I don't remember exactly.
Maybe pick a random preferred network, turn the radio on and off, and then go back and pick lte/gsm and look for "global".
But I do remember doing this process randomly dozens of times and whenever "cellular networks" said "lte/cdma" there never was a choice of 4g, 3g, 2g.
However, three times I managed to get "global" to show up, and each time I tapped on it the popup gave me the three "G" choices.
The third time I got "global" to show up, I managed to tap 4G fast enough, and it's been smooth sailing ever since.
One minor annoyance now though: whenever I restart the phone, I get a notification that the sim is not a Verizon one.
Thanks, lostnyc! Good luck everybody!

This took a little while to work, but ended up fixing the issue. You might have to fiddle with networks a good deal, but it will eventually work.
Or maybe you can bypass most of the challenge I had here and get lucky. Let me know if you need any help, I'd love give any assistance I can.
Thanks for the quick reply Mouse_exe. Did you upgrade to 5.1? Any issues with the upgrade, specifically related to using band 12?

That was during the early access or whatever BB calls it. I don't have their membership & was able to buy 2 of these.

I believe the device comes with 5.1 already, at least both of mine did.
The main issues were just connection based, but those were fixed with the method I mentioned. The one device didn't update the play store, so it was crashing. I just downloaded an updated version from a Google search to fix that.
The device has bands 2 and 4, no band 12. Works well overall, but you're not going to be getting the reception of band 12. :/ Still though, great phone for 10 bucks.
EDIT: Bands 2 and 4 are very common, you shouldn't need band 12 in the phone to get signal.
You don't need any special account, just buy it instore or online on blackfriday.
Bought 3, using on on T-Mobile and it works fine. Also managed to swap in a post-paid Verizon SIM into one of them and it works fine.
NOTE: REMOVE VERIZON PREPAID SIM BEFORE YOU EVEN POWER IT ON

Not sure if this helps , but saw this in another thread/post:

UPDATE!!!
DISABLED vzwAPNpermissions.apk & vzwAPNservice.apk and was able to change sims without having to redo the settings in ADB!!
Also, the phone automatically found my APN settings on different SIM cards after doing this!!

Verizon Moto G4 Play XT1609 - Total Wireless APN Settings

Hello folks,
Data wasn't working for Total Wireless on my Verizon Moto G4 Play XT1609. APN settings are missing on the phone, so you'll need the app below to add the proper APN settings on your phone. After a couple days of searching on the net, I couldn't find anything that worked, so here's what I did that finally worked for me.
Download Change APN from the Google Play Store.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.appando.app.changeApn&hl=en
================================================================
Open Change APN app and tap the + sign to add your APN settings for Total Wireless.

How did you make this work when the 1609 doesn't accept EDGE or HSPAP?

I didn't do anything...
1. I unlocked the phone (on ebay)
2. I used a sim from a TW phone
3. I used Change APN app to add apn settings
4. Restarted the phone and all was good.

I'm aware, but EDGE and HSPAP are strictly GSM. What I'm asking is how those settings even worked, especially when so many units are suffering from the APN crash inherent to all ROMs right now.

I'm specifically speaking about the Verizon Moto G4 Play XT1609 version phone. I ported my sister over from H2O to Total Wireless. I used a TW sim to activate to a TW 4G phone. I then took that sim and popped it into the Moto G4 Play. My sister reported that data wasn't working, so I installed Change APN app from Google Play store..
I added the TW apn settings from above into the Change APN app, saved it, restarted the phone and all was good. Obviously you're not going to have data & voice work simultaneously, but you can use Hangouts Dialer to get around that if needed. I hope that clears up any confusion.

He's using the Verizon Prepaid Moto G4 Play, it is a CDMA /LTE device. No EDGE or HSPA. I hope this clarifies his use of a Verizon G4 Play on a VZW mvno.

No, it does not. Look at the original post. The OP put GSM settings in an APN for a CDMA device. Please stop patronizing me and explain how in the hell that works, when we have not one, but FOUR threads where people cannot get Verizon APNs to work.

My apologies, I guess I misunderstood your question. I thought you were asking how he got a GSM phone to work with Total wireless.

So you would recomend buying the unlock code before doing any of this? Also, did you have the G4 Play activated on Verizon Prepaid before you did all this?

I'm not understanding what you're trying to say. The apn settings are for Total Wireless, a Verizon MVNO. I'm not or was not suggesting the phone would work for GSM networks. The Change APN app only allows you to edit/add apn settings, and those are the apn settings I found and used for Total Wireless.

Yes, unlock the phone first. I did not activate the phone at all with Verizon, but I did use an active TW sim card. Be sure not to turn the phone on with the Verizon Prepaid sim before getting the phone unlocked.

Too late, already activated. Do you think there may be problems trying to get the phone to work with TW? I ran the IMEI number through their website and it said the phone is compatible.

No, you shouldn't have any trouble with activating it on TW, but you still might need to unlock it, which only costs $2 or less on eBay. Good luck!

There are multiple problems with what you are saying. First, Total Wireless is a subsidiary of America Movil, same as Tracfone, StraightTalk, Net10, TelCel and Family Mobile. Considering I just had to fight with Tracfone to get a VZW APN (on a different phone) to work yesterday, the APN name was VZWINTERNET but it lacked some of the text strings you supplied, and could not be edited by the user. It also seemed to vanish after the phone was programmed properly.
The "Bearer" line shouldn't look like that. Most carriers and MVNOs leave it as "Not Set" or unspecified. So this is junk data the phone will discard at best or be confused by at worst. My concern was that those settings would be rejected by Verizon and you wouldn't be able to obtain an IP address, since similar things can and have happened on the AT&T side (which is what my primary uses).
And once again, this doesn't exactly fix things for those using the 1607 model. People have tried your trick extensively, but the ROMs currently being used are Dual SIM and don't recognize CDMA technology as being valid. As such, they either get Voice/NoData, or Data/NoVoice. They're not reading MEIDs or IMEIs correctly, favoring one over the other, and that's what we believe to be part of the problem. So forgive me for being cynical about this.

So is there a difference between the 1607 and 1609 models? The one I have is the 1609 Verizon prepaid bought at Walmart.

I'm just telling you what I did for my sister's Verizon Prepaid Moto G4 Play XT1609 phone on Total Wireless. Anyone with the same exact model phone should be able to replicate what I did. Maybe this will not work on other models, but it worked for me using the Change APN app using those EXACT apn settings. I don't see why you would be so cynical about this, and I only posted this to help others out that may have the same issue I had, nothing more, nothing less buddy.
Here's where I found the TW apn settings that worked for me. https://www.reddit.com/r/NoContract/comments/4pkhoh/total_wireless_4g_apn_settings/

1607 has both a GSM/LTE and a CDMA/LTE antenna. 1609 only has a CDMA/LTE antenna and its LTE bands are locked to a smaller range.

So if TW is an MVNO of Verizon, shouldn't this phone work with their service by just changing the APN settings, as Phenom727 suggests?
