How do you plan to exit the game if you remove them?
I find gaming on a phone super annoying anyway. Will stick to my Xbox for the games
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I'm sure that we'll have ROMs capable of hiding the onscreen buttons while gaming. You won't get stuck in the app because, in most cases, all you would have to do to get them back is long press the power button and tap on a toggle.

Maybe the developers have a workaround?

Needs a gesture to hide/show them. Or a floating small button with adjustable transparency to show/hide them... devs probably have this already worked out.
With paranoid android on the nexus 7 there is an option in the power menu called expanded desktop
Basically does this.
Load game
Hold power
Press expanded desktop
On screen buttons dissapear
When your done do the same thing to bring them back.
I'm certain this will be included in custom roms

A swipe from the bottom bezel would work if the software buttons auto hide. Sort of like the windows taskbar.

Or just hit power to bring the buttons. Or even better for the next Nexus : put hardware buttons for back / home / menu / tasks and get rid of the button bar

CM has gotten it as well
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/1...-hides-navigation-buttons-and-the-status-bar/
Not all games are like that. I have a Galaxy Nexus and when you're playing certain games the navigation keys turn into 3 dots and you must double tap them to actually do the command (back, home etc.), some games don't even have the keys appear. It all comes down to the games developers. I personally have never had a problem with on screen keys, I actually prefer them more.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
When watching youtube in landscape, the picture goes full screen and the buttons automatically disappear. To get them back you just tap the screen. It would be nice if that happened on every app/game.
Funny. I don't remember seeing the sw buttons on my Galaxy Nexus. They auto hide in games.

This would feel great if we get this in Nexus 4.
Its all Software, Devs have to implement it and build an alternative menu-key or other control options into the game, instead of using the classical menu-key like in the navbar (btw Google also recommended this to devs).

The physical screen has more room on the bottom of the GNex, the SW buttons make the top and bottom even, which is not annoying. The N4 has the same screen side on botkm and top so with the SW buttons it's uneven and very bothersome.
I hope AOKP, CM, or PA comes out soon for the LGNex.

Ever since my switch over to Android a few years back from my iPhone 3G, I've always been waiting for such a feature in Android that will give me the ability to tap the notification bar and instantly scroll back to the top in any app that requires scrolling. I've never once asked for this feature once until now. I've Googled it and it seems to be a rare topic. Do Android users know if this such feature? Because it seems like an easy concept and assuming wouldn't be difficult to incorporate a mod into Android... or would it?

Used to like that feature on the iphone a year back. But don't you think that it is also possible to just flung one time and the whole page goes up? In iOS the flings are not continuous. To me at least. I would love to have this though.

Yes, that is what I have to do now. But when I'm reading a long article, flinging up on the page 20 times gets old.
I think Apple would sue Google if that feature was intriduced to Android
I think the new Samsung Galaxy S 3 has an gesture with scrolls in any list to the top. You just tap the top of the phone twice.

in general, 1 side: users have to swipe many many times to come to the top of the page; another side: just a tap then done(just like the home key on PC) - smooth and easy. Think and compare

I think most would agree that the expanded phone UI is ideal for the Nexus... in portrait mode. After playing with the full tablet UI on my Nexus, you see how much you're missing out on with the default UI in landscape. Especially in apps that hide the notification bar in landscape like Dead Trigger and most other games leave you guessing at what's going on with your battery, Wi-Fi, and notifications until you exit the app. This is by far my biggest problem with the N7.
So what do I want? I want the Nexus 7 to have expanded phone UI in portrait, and tablet UI in landscape. I'm not talking fiddling with DPI per app and ****, I just want the notification/navigation bars to change based on orientation, plain and simple. Would that ever be possible?
Sent from my Samsung Infuse 4G
I think the optimal solution would be some sort of system wide gesture or a soft button in the nav bar to bring the status bar down over whatever is is currently displayed.
As to what you want, check out Paranoid Android.

Haven't seen that yet. My guess is that it would require a app restart upon orientation change which would suck.

I've been using the Parandroid Rom on my Galaxy Nexus and love it. Also running the patch over in Development that allows the N7 to run in Tablet without changing the DPI settings.
I can't stand the phone style UI myself. I need the tablet UI. It works on a phone because the screen is smaller but there's no reason for it on a bigger screen. I had the Nook Color and that was my first tablet, back before Honeycomb and the tablet UI became integrated into the OS. The mods that were done on CM7 on that thing sort of laid the groundwork and showed that a modified, combined status bar and navigation bar were needed if you didn't have physical buttons.
The UI on there combined soft keys onto the notification bar and it just made sense. The same could work on the Nexus 7, if you had a combined portrait notification bar, it could be at the top of the screen like normal but have soft keys on the left side. I think on the Nook Color, they put the notification bar at the bottom, so it really did set us up for the HC/ICS/JB UI...
There's probably an app that does this, sort of like Button Savior or something...

I'm running the EOS rom with its stock DPI Tablet mode and I love it. Its not super small like when lowering the DPI and everything works like the market and looks very nice.
I'm waiting for other devs to pick up the feature... however they do it.
Tablet UI all the way. Portrait and Landscape... its much better equipped for anything over 5". Plus that notification pull down is atrocious. Why isn't it full screen?!
Here's mine on EOS rom:

There is an app in the market that let's you show the notification bar in full screen apps by long pressing / dragging down from the top. Very useful when you get a text while in netflix or something. I think this sounds like it would mostly solve your issue.

Questions go in the Q&A section
Tried tablet UI, couldn't stand it. I favor my right hand, and the tablet UI places the back button on the far, far left. Unacceptable waste of movement.
The only viable option, to me, is something along the lines of rob43's Salad Bar II. I think it also satisfies the OP's requirements. But, I think he's too poor to afford a N7 right now, so who knows when it'll be ported LOL.
is there anyway to change brightness without minimizing application or going to setting menu or use widgets. Tab 2 has this cool notification bar from where you can do lots of things like changing turning off/on gps,wi-fi,sync, change volume and brightness (manually) or set auto. And it does it without interruption.. very useful! On Nexus 7 it's a whole different thing.. i use power toggles from playstore and it has that option to put the toggles in the notification bar.. it works but not the way i would like it to.. Like for example i'm watching youtube and i want to bump up the brightness i pull down notification bar select brightness slider and youtube stops the video.. now after i adjusted the brightness i have to click on play icon sometimes the video resumes sometimes it reloads or rebuffers.
You get the point.. Thanks!

same here i had the nexus then got so used to it so I added them to the Note 2. But unfortunately I tried the same method by editing the build.prop on the note 2 to get the soft buttons to work on the note 3 but it crashes the system ui. Hopefully someone know a way.
If you are rooted, you can add LMT / Pie Control but not sure on disabling the hard buttons.
If you are not rooted, I was thinking there was an app similar to Pie in the market but I did not find it with a quick search.
same here.
And change the build prop because it will give you a bunch of force closures.
Closes I came to a navigation was floating soft keys in the market.
why would you? you lose screen space and they are already built in so you lose more then you gain
I would recommend to use Ultimate Navbar for softkeys
And Xposed Additions to disable/remap hardware keys
I use LMT an have the activation point just above the home button. I've been using it since the day I rooted and like it a lot.

I use two fingers swipe down instead of double tap. You can set any gesture you want.
Roms have double tap top screen to sleep.
Everyone he already given all info needed. This is one of many reasons why I love roms. I always have a custom tile for screen off and a softkey just for screen off that way I can access it either way and not hit a button. Nexus devices have always had crappy buttons and I don't wanna mess em up by hitting them 20,000 times so thats how I get around it. Lots of great 100% stable custom roms to choose from. Pure Nexus, Chroma, RR, AICP, Aokp, the list goes on.. Nexus is the best device for roms. Cheers.

The Best one I've ever seen is run resurrection remix with whatever kernel, elemental is good or Franco. Then simply add an extra nav bar button. So instead I having three at the bottom I have 4. You have the back, home, and recents +power button on the far right of nav bar. A single process turn off long press and you'll get the power menu with screenshot power off and reboot and reboot to recovery that's all you want.
