Hello
I had my Galaxy S screen replaced 2 days ago (the new screen is a new one replaced by the Samsung centre)
However I am using CM9 with Semaphore kernel and it looks so dark, like if the colors weren't right.
Any ideas? Playing with the color settings don't have much effect..
Thanks
Did they replaced it with another Amoled screen, or with the Super LCD one? That might be the difference.
Hello
Well, it should be an Amoled, it's a GTI9000
As far as I know, the LCD screen is for I9003, isn't it?
Thanks
Maybe you have voodoo color throwing you off?

Hello
This model is I9000 and its screen got replaced by a Samsung Centre recently
Here are the screenshots:

How can I find if there's voodoo mod?
I haven't found anything like that in the phone.
Do you know what I can do with it?
I really don't understand why this screen looks darker

What about stock rom? Same thing?
Hello
I've just flashed the stock rom yesterday and compared it with a friend who has the same ROM, well, not the same exactly, mine is 2.3.3 and his is 2.3.6
My phone seems to get better when the screen gets brighter, but when is dark, white isn't white, it looks a bit like yellow. So I guess it's the screen or the screen protector I put on it.
However, I really doubt warranty will exchange this new screen since they might not consider it a failure, but it looks extremely ugly..
Thank you.

We just got 4 at work. The supplier told us they only had 1 left a few weeks ago and we had to wait until they got new stock so when they turned up we had one from an old batch and three newer ones. The one older one was very noticably darker then the 3 newer ones even with exactly the same screen settings. It also had a slight blue tint to it.
My brother and I both have I9000 Galaxy. The 1st phone (the older one) was very bright that it resulted in eye strain while using!
After about a month when I bought a new Galaxy S it was very dark compared to the older phone on same settings and same firmware.
So maybe its the issue with some phones or I am guessing that the older phone suffered from backlight bleeding! But now the screen broke and I bought a replacement screen from ebay.

Now THAT explains something. I have a pixel tester and when I set it to black, in a pitch black room I can still see the screen. Well now I know... You sure about that though? Even the Samsung Super AMOLED videos make a point of there being no backlight.
AMOLED does die over time, blue first. So as I understand it most of these AMOLED screens in phones have twice the blue pixels to make up for it over time. I would of suspected that the lifetime is a few years though, not months.
There is no backlight in S-AMOLED displays.

As you can see, there is no lamp, neither a white background needed for the light to reflect.

Thought so. So, can anyone explain to me why I can see my screen in the dark when the phone is showing only a black screen? Such as with the dead pixel checking app I used? Perhaps it does not correctly request true black but even noLED from these forums does it.
I would expect it's due to leakage current.
Each pixel on the screen is controlled by a transistor (actually probably more than one). Even when the transistor is turned off (and the pixel should be dark) there will still be a small amount of current leak through. I suspect that this is what causes the screen to glow slightly even when displaying black.
Of course when the entire screen is turned off, no power is going to the display, so even this small current stops and the screen is darker.
Maybe Samsung has switched to SLCD screens.
The rumour circulated few months ago that Samsung has stopped the production of the Wave and the Galaxy S smartphones because of the Super AMOLED shortage.
Maybe now they are shiping SGS with SLCD.
The SLCD screens are much brigther than SAMOLED.
Here is the comparison:

I highly doubt samsung would discontinue the SGS line for any reason. In fact, they just started to showcase the 7inch SAMOLED most likely for the next gen galaxy tab.
However, here's a comparison.

I'm sure it was an AMOLED Screen, easy to recognize...
I'll try to make some photos.
i got mine when it first came out and i have it on zero brightness setting and it is bright and clear (except in sunlight when it becomes as hard as any other phone to see)
ive tried about 15 of these phones and the screens on all of them were different when set to the highest brightness. The most common differences were darker and lighter shades of blue. a couple were more red than others and looked 'warmer'. The one im using right now is pretty neutral though not sure why that is but they all seem to be different.
(all 15 were running JH2 stock with no lagfixes on i9000m from bell)
Argh...
I have a dead green pixel towards the bottom of the phone... And now that i know its there.. I keep looking at it! Def wasnt dead when i got it
A good way to test the pixels is via the *#0*# menu... red, green and blue.
i always have brightness settings at the lowest and when i was using eclair rom everything was really dark. after flashing froyo rom i noticed straight away even at the lowest settings the phone is still pretty bright but green colour does not look good at all.
Hey guys,
I just received a replacement phone from Bell, so now I happen to have two Galaxy S running in front of me. My old phone, for some random reason doesn't have the same colors as my new one.
The old phone, displays white really nicely, whereas the new one, it's more "beige-ish"... Overall the screen colors of the new phone are "warmer" and the old one has more realistic colors. Darker blacks and whites that are really bright.
I don't get it... Is the new phone defective?! Does it need break-in?
Thanks
Same Problem
Dude I got my old bricked phone replaced around a week ago and this new one's screen, like you said, has beige-ish or yellowish coloring whenever I put the brightness down below 20%. My old one was perfect, it showed the whites perfectly. What are you planning on doing? I think im going to take it in to the store. Did you find out the reason for it or take it in yourself to the store?
You guys should post the manufacture dates for your old and new phones. I got a new 9000M after my internal SD died but I never had both phones at the same time. As far as I can tell my new phone's display is just as good (maybe slightly better) than the old one. They were both 10.08 dates.
From what I have heard, a new AMOLED should be slightly blueish because the blue sub-pixels get weaker before the others.
My old one is 10.08 and the new one is 10.11. Old one's screen was perfect..but i dont know whats wrong with this one..its just yellow when the brightness setting is low..
Same here, bought my mother's captivate(not from replacement) and its screen seemed yellowish and darker than mine. However touch button backlight is much brighter than mine.

Sorry I have to say this, but it is absolutely normal. Had 2 sgs back in june. One ABSOLUTELY white and great screen (but also a dead pixel)and the other more as described here. Also the warm color is best be seen in an angel of normal use. Annoying, but you get used to it.

So Crypta, will this be looked upon as a defect. Could I possibly take it back to Bell store for a replacement. I cannot get used to this..its pretty bad, the yellow coloring i mean.

Kewjoe, could you plz tell me the step by step process of getting my phone to your phone's level. I mean Darky's rom..speed mod etc. Our phones (bell i9000) are extremely fragile and you know that. I wanted to get darky's on it but i dint want to brick it. Also, if i do mod darky's but somehow or another my phone needs repair and I need to take it back to bell, would I be able to bring my phone back to bone stock (bell jl2) conditon? If yes, how is it done? Thank you
Can't say if it is rated as flaw. Kept mine, as it is only a great difference in comparison. Saw 4 sgs screens - all different from blueish to pretty warm. There seem to be a great variation within production range.
sent from my cobra mk3 by a thargoid pigeon
This is normal in the process of screen, that does not come from the same production line.
Took mine in to bell store couple of days back and they shipped it for repair/replacement. They compared my screen to the phone on display in store and even they said mine was really washed out. I also had a loose battery problem so they mentioned that on the repair sheet as well. Hopefully I get it(or a replacement) back soon. They said 10 days..I'll let you know once I get it back.
is it still SAMOLED, does it still have DEEP Blacks? maybe they changed it to SLCD? i hope not!
Yea its still S-Amoled but it was just yellowy so I had to take it back. I dont think they would change it to slcd..lets see.
Chk this out, I think it could be software problem but I flashed many roms and it hasn't seemed to bring it back to normal so I sent it in.

Have you tried to Galaxy Tuner? It's available in the market, you can change the color settings with it.
I Swyped this on my Galaxy S
Different manufacturing batches ==>Different products. It may happen. But if there is too much difference in colors as you said it is a manufacturing defect.
Please help! I just bought the Bell galaxy s 2 today and realised that in low brightness settings screen has a pink tint.
Does anyone have this issue? Its more visible in grey colors. When i compare with my galaxy s, galaxy s' whites are true white and galaxy s 2's white are pinkish tint on it. When the brihhtness is at %100 its not that visible but once u set it %0 it becomes pinkish.
Is it what it suppose to be or its defective?
Note: yes i played with background effect but it didnt help. I am running KG2.
Edit: I compared with galaxy s again and if I make the brightness %100 on galaxy s 2 both screens almost identical (although SGS2 still has little warm whites) but at %0 brightness when I pull down the notification screen sgs2 has literally pink hue
Why not anyone comment on this? 100 something views and no comments?

Are you saying your whole screen looks rather pinkish ? I've seen couple of devices that were pretty much reddish when showing white, but i think that's not normal. You should replace it.

Yes whole screen has a reddish tint. Especially grey colors. Instead of grey it displays reddish. If i compare Gmail app with Sgs side by side, my screen has ridiculously pink color.
I wonder if its a software issue or hardware? Cuz I remember in sgs hardcore's kernel he made an.option to change the colors.
This is my second sgs2. First one had a dead pixel. So I didnt wanna go right away and change it. I wanted to ask yours.
More input will appreciated.
I uploaded a pic SGS and SGS2 side by side displaying Grey Graident Colors. what do you think?
If your phone looks like the one on the right, get it replaced. No rom/firmware will make it look good.

I'd take the lack or response to mean that it's not a problem experienced by many people. If your read the threads talking about the display, you'll see there's wide variations in color temperature. Cool/blue seems to be normal while there are reports of phones leaning toward warm/yellow. Pink hasn't been reported a lot so I'd exchange the phone.

My girlfriend and I have the same german sgs2 (dbt) and mine has a bit of a greenish tint whereas hers had a but if a reddish tint. You can't notice it when using the phones alone but when you put them side by side you can notice it a little bit, but really not that much. Seems to be an AMOLED thing. Thanks a lot for that image. I have been wondering what people were talking about when they mentioned pinkish screen...
Luckily I don't seem to have that problem. It seems like there are a few defective screens out there.
perhaps supercurio will have a voodoo colour fix with the sgs2 whenever he releases it. It fixed the tinge on the original sgs. Look it up if u are unfamiliar with it
I changed the phone today and got a new one. Its better now and significany less pink color.
Also I discovered something that the pink tint is only visible when u look at the screen 90 degrees. If u tilt the phone a little (5-10 degrees) to left-right or up-down and view like that the color turns normal (like my year old sgs).
It made me realise that this is a screen coating issue (maybe coating causes polarisation). So do u think this will go away with the time of use?
When I turn off the screen and check it under light by tilting I can see a little purple glare.
What do u think?
Dear owner of galaxy s2,
I'm sure I'm not the only to be bothered by the screen color temperatures totally wrong. Mine tints really to much to blue.
Did someone manage to install a screen color changer ?
Thanks
I think its being worked on. Meanwhile if you go into the screen settings you'll see a setting for display type or something similar. Switch that from Dynamic to Movie and the colours should be more balanced..
It should fix itself over a few weeks, the blue amoleds degrade a lot faster than the green and red
So in a few weeks it degrades faster, does that mean in a few months it would've degraded so much he'll have another issue? I don't think your comment makes sense

I have bought my 2nd sgs2 yesterday and I found out that this unit has lot of red tint in low brightness. Almost the effect is so high that all those gray bands look like light maroon shades. Samsung has really messed up with these samoledplus displays in sgs2. In my 1st sgs2 the display was quite dull even in 100% brightness compared to other sgs2 displays. Fortunately it was gifted to me so I sold that unit.
But this new unit has new display problem of strong red tint all over the screen affecting gray shade a lot in low brightness mode. The only fortunate thing is that famous yellow tint issue is almost nil and in 100% brightness display is very bright. But I am still gonna ask for brand new replacement of this faulty sgs2 unit.

I'm on my 5th replacement S4, all because of screen issues!
This is my current (5th) handset and I notice horrible green tint and stripes on the screen when on low brightness in a dark room.
Before you say it, "but this isn't normal conditions" this is my normal conditions when I use my phone at home. My room is dim.
And my S, S2 and S3 all didnt do this.
Anyone else notice this sort of problem??
Yes my first s4 had the stripes in low light.
My second replacement didn't have the stripes but has the pink tint on the lower half of the screen.
Not sure whether i should risk exchanging this one and get another s4 with a different screen issue.
I saw ur screen shot.. do u mean by green tint in left sides from corners?
If yes then its faulty.. and ignore the answer which is written below
If u mean why black is horible in settings menu like settings, file manger..
Then I have truth answer of that shot..
We all know samsung have smearing thing like we move text on settings its looks bad ghosting caused by true black pixel(turned off in black fully)..so for that, samsung did change they make a black intensity to 0 to 1% in settings menus..
So, for fixing smearing issue they did that..
If u have doubt with black.. then open a pure black image or download screen test from play store..
See the black should fine..
Dont trust on black on settings..
Its normal normal normal normal..
Edit. And I seen u are in custom rom..
Well the notification bar it's pure black and see the menu side..(file manager)
I hope it helps

In my opinion, with the S4 you just end up replacing one issue with another!
Trust me I've had 5 replacements and not one has had a perfect screen
I've given up on my quest for perfection now, which I don't think is to much to ask for one of the most expensive phones on the market!
Samsung have let themselves down on this one.

That's a shame. I would exchange the phone for a HTC one but I don't want to give up the 5 inch screen, user replaceable battery, and micro SD card.
Hoping Samsung comes out with a firmware fix for the pink tint like they did with the s2.

This issue isn't software related.
It's a very poorly made AMOLED display. Samsung only have $$$ in mind.
It is a shame, and believe me, if the HTC One had an SD card slot I would totally own one right now!
I don't disagree with you, but if they can provide a software workaround i'll take it.
If they can do some type of filter to the bottom or top of the screen to offset the pink tint that would fix the issue most likely.
I'm thinking that's what Samsung did to fix the yellow tint on the left side of the screen for the galaxy s2.
I don't see why Samsung can't do that for the s4.

I got all 5 phones from reputable shops here in NZ.
The first 2 were from 2Degrees and the last 3 from Vodafone.
We don't have a Samsung store here so I've gone to the best places that are available to me.
I feel this new Full HD AMOLED panel was rushed to market and didn't have the proper quality control or testing done. Simple.
Yes I'm a bit annoyed over it, but not sad.
There are much worse things going on the world right now than my phone having a green screen.
I was just wanting to know if it really is worth me chasing the perfect screen or if everyone else is experiencing issues like this.
I got my s4 here in nz too. The firmware was out of date and I had horrible blacks in videos too. I flashed to the German firmware and it's night and day better with proper blacks etc. My only complaint now is the yellow green tint on the screen, really annoys me watching movies. It disappears if you tilt the screen slightly but when viewed straight on everything has a faint yellow tint.
I agree with what was said above - my view is it's just a poor screen.
