Galaxy s2 color profile - Galaxy S II General

Dear owner of galaxy s2,
I'm sure I'm not the only to be bothered by the screen color temperatures totally wrong. Mine tints really to much to blue.
Did someone manage to install a screen color changer ?
Thanks

I think its being worked on. Meanwhile if you go into the screen settings you'll see a setting for display type or something similar. Switch that from Dynamic to Movie and the colours should be more balanced..

It should fix itself over a few weeks, the blue amoleds degrade a lot faster than the green and red

So in a few weeks it degrades faster, does that mean in a few months it would've degraded so much he'll have another issue? I don't think your comment makes sense

The dynamic standard and movies setting are all terrible according to me.
Are you really happy with it ?

In that case, we have to stop using Litening Rom which is blue themed

I have bought my 2nd sgs2 yesterday and I found out that this unit has lot of red tint in low brightness. Almost the effect is so high that all those gray bands look like light maroon shades. Samsung has really messed up with these samoledplus displays in sgs2. In my 1st sgs2 the display was quite dull even in 100% brightness compared to other sgs2 displays. Fortunately it was gifted to me so I sold that unit.
But this new unit has new display problem of strong red tint all over the screen affecting gray shade a lot in low brightness mode. The only fortunate thing is that famous yellow tint issue is almost nil and in 100% brightness display is very bright. But I am still gonna ask for brand new replacement of this faulty sgs2 unit.

Display has a pink tint!!

Please help! I just bought the Bell galaxy s 2 today and realised that in low brightness settings screen has a pink tint.
Does anyone have this issue? Its more visible in grey colors. When i compare with my galaxy s, galaxy s' whites are true white and galaxy s 2's white are pinkish tint on it. When the brihhtness is at %100 its not that visible but once u set it %0 it becomes pinkish.
Is it what it suppose to be or its defective?
Note: yes i played with background effect but it didnt help. I am running KG2.
Edit: I compared with galaxy s again and if I make the brightness %100 on galaxy s 2 both screens almost identical (although SGS2 still has little warm whites) but at %0 brightness when I pull down the notification screen sgs2 has literally pink hue
Why not anyone comment on this? 100 something views and no comments?
U guys all have sgs2. pls at least share your phone's display colors so I can know if something is wrong with mine.
Yep got it to and also pink on camera also mine going back to Amazon tomorrow had two in a week with same problem Ive got one ordered from another retailer ... but I think its a inherent fault

Are you saying your whole screen looks rather pinkish ? I've seen couple of devices that were pretty much reddish when showing white, but i think that's not normal. You should replace it.

Yes whole screen has a reddish tint. Especially grey colors. Instead of grey it displays reddish. If i compare Gmail app with Sgs side by side, my screen has ridiculously pink color.
I wonder if its a software issue or hardware? Cuz I remember in sgs hardcore's kernel he made an.option to change the colors.
This is my second sgs2. First one had a dead pixel. So I didnt wanna go right away and change it. I wanted to ask yours.
More input will appreciated.
I uploaded a pic SGS and SGS2 side by side displaying Grey Graident Colors. what do you think?
If your phone looks like the one on the right, get it replaced. No rom/firmware will make it look good.

I'd take the lack or response to mean that it's not a problem experienced by many people. If your read the threads talking about the display, you'll see there's wide variations in color temperature. Cool/blue seems to be normal while there are reports of phones leaning toward warm/yellow. Pink hasn't been reported a lot so I'd exchange the phone.

I am also from India and I dont have any such problem with my sgs2...
My girlfriend and I have the same german sgs2 (dbt) and mine has a bit of a greenish tint whereas hers had a but if a reddish tint. You can't notice it when using the phones alone but when you put them side by side you can notice it a little bit, but really not that much. Seems to be an AMOLED thing. Maybe I'll manage to take a photo for you.

Thanks a lot for that image. I have been wondering what people were talking about when they mentioned pinkish screen...
Luckily I don't seem to have that problem. It seems like there are a few defective screens out there.
perhaps supercurio will have a voodoo colour fix with the sgs2 whenever he releases it. It fixed the tinge on the original sgs. Look it up if u are unfamiliar with it
I changed the phone today and got a new one. Its better now and significany less pink color.
Also I discovered something that the pink tint is only visible when u look at the screen 90 degrees. If u tilt the phone a little (5-10 degrees) to left-right or up-down and view like that the color turns normal (like my year old sgs).
It made me realise that this is a screen coating issue (maybe coating causes polarisation). So do u think this will go away with the time of use?
When I turn off the screen and check it under light by tilting I can see a little purple glare.
What do u think?

[Q]Whitelevels and screen sharpness

I have only seen 4 galaxy tab 7.7's so far and I noticed all 4 of them really have bad white levels as compared to my galaxy note, disabled the auto power saving and there is a difference in white levels but its still not even close to the galaxy note at the same brightness level. Even at brightness 25% on the note the vs 100% on the tab 7.7shows 'dimmer'whites. This is not a rant but I'm just asking if the screens are calibrated that way or should I keep looking?
Also I noticed that the mdine engine oon the tab provides oversharpening to a lot of my photos and its so obvious and makes the images look bd, supercurio has the same findings.
It is a pretty big screen so it may be they limited the brightnes to save battery power. While the claim is that OLED takes less power than LCD that is not always true. When displaying white, OLED tech uses like 4X as much power as LCD. The power saving comes in when displaying images with medium to darker colors.
What is the "mdine engine"? Is this something that can be bypassed by using a different picture viewing app?
It is amazing how Samsung seems to always add some crappy image "enhancement" like DnIE or such crap. Why can't they just leave our images alone, as we meant them to be? It is freakin' OLED man. You don't need any contrast or sharpness enhancement you knuckleheads! OLED by nature is sharp and has great contrast! Duh!
I don't know. My 7.7 is super bright, sharp and with way warmer colors than my Note.

I'm thinking the samr thing that samsung might ne limiting how bright the whites can go duebto the screen size but based on what I've seen on samoleds some screens juat put out better white levels, not really brighter but whiter.
For the mdine its running system wide.

The samoled plus tends to have more warmer colors than the samoled, is the whites on your tab 7.7 'whiter' than on the note at the same brightness level?

Yes I believe so, Supercurio knows more about that stuff.
EDIT:
simulated example done in photoshop, anyone with the tab7.7 and better photoshop skills feel free to redo this simulated image
Perhaps one of the other reason that the 7.7's screen isn't quite as bright, apart from the obvious power saving reasons, is an effort to possibly reduce the OLED degradation (burn-in) effect.
Either way, although I certainly noticed out of the box that my 7.7 wasn't as bright as my Note (or even my GS2 for that matter!), I was never really bothered by it because (especially when you use movie mode) the colour reproduction is very accurate, and paired up with the contrast levels, it's still fantastic!
I guess, to me, white doesn't necessarily mean I need to put on a pair of sunglasses while looking at my screen lol!
I just wanted to know if the norm has lower white levels, what bothers me more is added sharpening on some images.

Yellowish? Not at all! At least not with my unit anyway. Sure it makes the screen generally warmer in colour, but IMO, more than anything, it makes the colours look more accurate and natural.
Give it a try! You never know until you do...

Well ever since the Galaxy S changing the color mode to movie mode gives a yellowish cast, this is probably dependent on the calibration on the screen we get in the first place. I saw a friend's Tab7.7 the other day and his white levels were really brighter than my Galaxy Note. FWIW, its still a luck of the draw when it comes to color calibration on the screen. But thanks for that tip, when I'll purchase the Tab I'll make sure to also check out movie mode and see if it hits my requirements.

Very bright noticed the same with the Note ,
Nexus was somewhat easier on the eyes at night,
But probably like you I like a very dim screen at night.
When the brightness is turned all the way down on the 7.7,
is any banding or other issues seen like many report on the Note?
Blacks are black I'm sure but how are greys that are near black.
On the Nexus they were fine, but on the Notes I seen they could have been darker?

Screen Adjuster

Guyz I bought a galaxy note last week...just out of the box i saw a yellowish tint all over the display basicaly from the bottom left.....
so i got an app screen adjuster
i installed then adjusted the blue at +5 and now 90% of the yellowish tint is gone..
soo i have to ask is it safe to use this app????
heres the link to the app Here!
Sure its safe to use but if your note is flawed from the factory then take it back ??

I use it to lower the contract to -40 as it fixes some of the black rendering issues. I also set the overall brightness down to 75% as it is just set too bright (I turn it off when outside).
I have never fiddled with the colour as my colour renders perfectly. I agree that if it is not rendering correctly, send it back for a replacement. It will likely only get worse.

interesting how it helps you to solve some black rendering issues, but not at all for me.
Yeah its awesome but lags my ICS ROM down
its awesome app ... removes black blocks completely on videos .... is it factory issue with my note .. as i think it should work correctly be default .... isnt it ? ....
For sure is a very good and safe app but better now that is brand new it s better to take it back....
I have observed the similar thing.
I have now bought 4 Notes for myself and my family members (Yeah I know, 4 people in family with Note ). My personal one manufactured in October and those bought recently (3 of them, all made in January 2012) have different colour reproduction.
The new ones have slightly warmer colours when you look dead on (with slight shift to blue when you look at it from bottom at extreme angles which is to be expected).
But straight on, the new Note has colour reproduction similar to my Galaxy Nexus. ITs slightly warm. Its definitely not the colour calibration as it remains same regardless the ROM I use. Its definitely not like traditional SAMOLED blueish display like my old Note or SGS2 which I had before that.
All 3 which are manufactured in Jan 2012 have same colours. All 3 bought from different stores few days apart. But I dont think its bad thing. It actually little warmer like Nexus and is more closer to real life colours. I know that many people prefer artificial looking, eye popping SAMOLED colours, but I am definitely not complaining.

Black colour blocking is universal as far as I know. All of the Notes I have seen have it with hardware accelerated video playback. Using software decoding using players like MX video player or MoboPlayer or BSPlayer solves the issue for now and there is already work under way to fix this issue. I dont think you need to return your phone for this as new one will most likely have same issue.
What I mentioned was regarding general colour reproduction of the screen. The new Notes have slightly warmer colours everywhere. Be it in home screen, browser, gallery or video.

No, it's not faulty. Color banding or black blocks are just artifacts introduced by developers or the video encoding process for the most part - the issue is generally not apparent on TFT display types since the LCD layer isn't able to block 100% of the light to show you a true 'black' pixel.
Good dithering can hide the problem somewhat, but on OLED displays it's more difficult since they are far better with contrast.
You could look at it one of two ways...
You have a superior display technology that the world just needs to catch up with.
Or you have a worse screen because it doesn't hide what other display types are incapable of rendering.
Take your pick : )

Thats a relief ... i was also thinking the same thing as , other colors looks quite nice on my note ... only issue is the blocky blacks which on less resolution videos are more visible .... however i was able to solve the issue using screen adjuster app by setting contrast to 55% ... at that it displays no blocky blacks at all ... just the screen gets an overlay of grey for pure blacks..... i can live with it ...

Black Level Color Depth not Deep Enough ?????

Hey There..
just got my s3 a few days ago, pebble blue vietnam june batch..
Ok now there has been a lot of discussion regarding screen issues like:
1. Tints
2. Ink spots/blothces
3. Black Crush
4. Black/other color Clipping
5. Depth of Black level
I dont have problem 1... Just 2-3 tiny ink spots, so even problem 2 is negligble....i dont have problem 3 and its can be tweaked with software even if one has it..problem 4 i dont care about much...
So, my area of concern is the 5th problem, i.e when compared to an sgs2 or sgs1 , i find that the black levels are not as deep and super black as the former two phones !
Its not really noticable in normal lighting..please check the following in a very dark room or completely dark room...
Using a pure black wallpaper (attached below or use ur own true black wallpaper) , just open it in gallery, it seems extremely dark grey (almost black) and u can tell where the display meets the bezel...
well, even on sgs2 n sgs1 on pure black background, u could see a little backlight, so not perfect black, which is understandable....so here is where the main problem comes...read below..
on a sgs2 or sgs1, When there is text or icons or other stuff over a pure black backgorund, this time the blacks appear black (obviously its due to contrast difference producing the illusion of super black) and one cannot tell where the screen border ends n the bezel starts, it just blends due to the super blacks! This is what i love and want !!
However, this is not the case with my sgs3, the damned blacks still are not perfect black & i can see where the screen borders end and distinguish the bezel & the screen , they dont blend beautifully!
to experience this, in a dark room, on any brightness level, preferably test at 30% screen brightness cause thats what we normally tend to use indoors, atleast i do...
please use this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJO88Qhxwv4
(Thanks Tinderbox UK for the link)
or
play and high quality Dexter(Serial) video and see the part right before the intro theme where it says “SHOWTIME presents” (in white text) over a black blackground...
or
In youtube app when any video loads n the black screen comes with loading circle
or
use the pure black wallpaper with few icons on ur homescreen...
in the above cases, u should see pure black and u should not be able to tell where the screen n bezel borders meet..which is what u get on sgs1 n sgs2 screens..and i dont get this result on my sgs3 :-(
On sgs3, its almost black, but u can notice its very slightly gray ! so this is annoying to me since im so used to it appearing deeep black on the sgs1 n sgs2 !
--- So now what i need u guys to tell me is whether most sgs3 panels have this issue or is it just me ???
--- Will software tweaks like Supercurios upcoming “Display Expert” solve it by adding some black color depth adjustment ??
--- Should i take this to the Service Center? but prob is how will i show them the problem in a bright environment ?? and what if they tell me that the super amoled HD variant for the sgs3 is a new tech n differnt from the sgs1 n sgs2 screens and hence not as deep blacks ??
I WANT BLACK man !! i LOVED SuperAmoled cause if JET BLACK !! Help please!
this has been already experienced by many and so far none of the display experts has answered it or havent found the answer yet. in pitch dark environment the screen will look greyish black rather than pure black. i had the same on my s2 too but with a lesser margin.

hey Bala thnx fr replying, but wht im saying is tht, in ur gs3, dont u think its more grayish ?? iv listed the different conditions ...can u check n see?? im not talking about a plain pure black bckground which i agree is a lil grayish n is normal, but im talking bout black with other content on the screen....due to contrast differences n other colors from the non-black content, the black appears actual black as i had in sgs1 n sgs2, but in sgs3, it still does not Appear deep black
i dont thinks so mate, apart from the overall greyishness in full black conditions, i feel the blacks are good enough in images, video etc.
One more thing ,the feel of greyish black in pitch dark conditions may also be due to the fact that the screen border is dead black which makes us feel that the screen is not black enough. sgs2 didnt had this screen border afaik.
Are you looking at your phone the right way. You should be looking it at like this:

I want some big name devs to comment on this..if its software related n can be improved...then i wont fret about it so much...
some users in gnex forums said that maybe the voltage levels to the the 720p HD screens are lil higher and hence maybe the blacks are not completely dim, n emitting a lil light..
dam, i want some expert analysis on this !!

The fact that Samsung still have this issue on the S3 indicate that it's a bigger problem that we(the Gnote Owners) anticipated,I was thinking that this problem was only localized to N7000.it's the same sh*t with Gnote but yours is just a bit less noticeable or Samsung tried working on it but failed

A few display questions

Hi @all
is it normal to have a perfectly white display when looking straight at it and to have a slight reddish veil while tilting it? And is it normal that Amoled Cinema and Amoled Photo Mode are a lot more reddish than adaptive mode?
I am on my third Galaxy S8 now. My first one had a perfect display, even when tilting it had the standard blueish color of the Amoled Displays. Had to send it back because of a hardware issue.
My second and third one have the above mentioned "problems".
How is it on your device? I'm already thinking of returning even this one... i want a perfect display for the price I am paying.
Thanks for your reply.

I don't see any redish tint when tilting. Did you update your phone with the fix?

Yes I updated the phone to the latest firmware.
@Duskfall89 mine has that red veil issue as well but not enough to make me go nuts. I once had 1+1 and yellow band issue drove me nuts. Nevertheless, i think you can just set the red to the lowest on the RGB settings and it will go away. Im more worried about the battery haha

It's not an issue of being standard on oled displays. The blue tint is to produce a "vivid" look that catches the eye better.
Cinema and photo are suppose to have a warmer tint to match real life viewing. (because in real life, things have a warm tint) from the sun, and standard lighting.

It doesn't make me go nuts either but I know how perfect the display of my first S8 was

So is it normal that cinema and photo mode are more "reddish" than standard adaptive mode? I never tried those modes on my old S7 so I don't have any comparison.
@Duskfall89 i know how you feel. i can also verify that mine has a red veil when switching from cinema/photo/adaptive. Regardless, i think i can live with it. After going through the forums, many s8s are plagued with this issue and i got mine on Monday mind you! Others have mentioned that they have swapped around 3-4 units with most experiencing similar redness. If you're not satisfied, there are also who have swapped till they got the least red display unit but that would also run the risk having other parts that come faulty.. alas, people are never satisfied. I once swapped 3 msoft surfaces.

Yes, it's a lottery I guess...
I think I will stick with it, it really doesn't bother me too much, it's more about the fact that i know how my first S8 looked.
Amazon won't replace it anymore because it's the third phone I'd send back and so they want to check their entire stock. They offered me a complete cashback if I return it but then I would be without a phone. I could give it back, take my cash and then buy another one (which is now much cheaper than the price I paid at launch) but I am tired of setting up phones now

Yessir. They use a warm base as opposed to a cool base. If you really want to learn more about it Google TV color calibration and it will go into detail about why they use a "cool" blue tint for floor and selling and how true natural colors are more "warm" reddish
Then I recommend calibrating your TV and after a day of adjusting, you'll never want to go back.
Also, blue filter in the Phone settings will add a warm tint at night to help your eyes
@Acoustichayes good info !!! i guess i wont be so worried! but i guess the only issues here is that my reddish areas are focused at the top of the display and is not uniform across.

Thank yah. And the red tint on the top was apparently a software issue that was fixed in an update. There's a thread on it here somewhere. Just make sure your phone is updated

I had the same case but cannot really consider it as an issue as sometimes, i cannot barely see it. It's just the way it is. Also, you might wanna check out wider color gamut. i think that we're just used to the "blueish" as it looks natural but samsung uses deep red this time.

Hi, what do you mean with "had" the same case? did you get rid of it?
I got used to it now and it really isn't an issue but I'd prefer the "blueish" tint as my first S8 had that. Sadly it had the home button bug so I returned it.

Ok then it's the same as mine I could be make it more white if I'd play around with the colors but even then, while tilting the reddish veil still remains. Less noticeable but it's still there. So I decided to leave it as it was out of the box. At leats my home button now seems to work properly :laugh:
