Just wondering if anyone has thought of or better still started to build an XDA App Store.
I am thinking of an app we can all download to our phones, it will auto see what phone you have and only show those apps from XDA users, auto download updates of installed apps, auto download dependancies etc.
I have used an iphone hacked with cydia and such and it is much easier for downloading programs in this manner.
Just my 2 cents guys, I do hope we see something someday.
I know that you said that it should be XDA-specific, but another option is called App2Date.
Take a look here:
http://www.modaco.com/content/windo.../lend-your-support-to-a-generic-updater-tool/
I was thinking of making one myself, but I definitely do not have time to even start such a project. I'm fairly busy with other ones.
Its not quite what I imagined.
That program does the updates, but like cydia for a hacked iphone you should be able to download new programs as well.
I honestly don't think it would be too hard or dificult to make.
All we really need is an app to list the programs based on the device and wm version your currently running.
The only problem will be to find somewhere to store the apps. A solution could be a simple databased maintaned and hosted by XDA, that will list the program name, details, OS and device information (so you can get the correct version for your phone) and a direct download link to the cab file. This way the apps can be hosted anywhere and we can avoid having to run and pay for a huge data transfer of programs.
I can possibly help with the database if anyones interested in helping to write the actuall app. Then the listings can be maintaned by xda registered users.
Hi,
i am one of the developers of mobile2day.com an we have the possibility to provide a big database with applications mapped to several devices. So we can show only applications for a specific device.
We have allready a mobile solution running on http://mobile2day.mobi/en/usd/index.html where you can buy and download applications. Maybe we can think about to add beta software, too.
Please, if you are interested feel free to contact me.
I was owner of an iPhone before I bought my Touch Pro and besides the fact that the iPhone is not that good it has one big advantage: The AppStore
I would love that kind of store for WM Apps
Hi,
I'm using Motorola Milestone. A lot of times I have to update a new version of an app which has several bug fixes for Nexus One. As I know that the Milestone and Nexus One are running the same Android OS version (2.1). I just wonder why a normal application (such as Calendar or Note) must be dependent on hardware? I mean the same application version that works on Milestone but some of its features don't work in the Nexus. Let's take an example of Windows OS. We can install Firefox, Winamp or even some low level interacting program like anti virus in any computer (Lenovo, Acer,...) as long as they're running the same Windows version (like Vista). Is it a down side of Android platform?
I think I have a similar question. On my work the have a winmo databas app that work like an workordersystem. Can this program run in Android by any chance or has it to be rewritten to work on a Android platform?
I managed to install my application on the SD card by using to apkInstaller.
I thus wanted to test the installation from Android Market... My application does'nt settle down on the SD card but on the telephone... Why ? Nevertheless I added in the manifest the option android:installLocation="preferExternal" !
Needs to make other thing ?
Thank for your answers !
It's mostly localization.
Either developers ask google to make their app available only for certain devices, or certain manufacturers ask google to make only certain apps available.
If an app is built against the SDK, then it's compatible with all devices that share that SDK version.
Hi fellow LG WP7 users!
Just wanted to let you guys know that new free apps in the LG app store are available now. Enjoy!
New apps:
Cocktail Flow
Doodle God
Color Sprouts
envision for Basecamp
Krashlander
Colorize
Weave
Talking Ragdoll
Mobile Sommelier
Mr. Hat and the Magic cube
Network Setup
Thanks for the heads up. I can confirm the apps are available in Canada as well.
Wow, LG really knows what they are doing with their apps. And RIGHT on time too. 60 days after launch. I wonder if this will continue. Also, seeing how the last round of apps still remain, here's hoping any new apps won't replace the old ones.
I am really not regretting buying and keeping this phone after all, even if the buttons are still a bit wobbly. If LG comes up with a phone with an IPS panel like they are doing with their Tegra2 based Android phones, but with WP7 on board, then they will have another customer...again.
PS: The total worth of the apps is around 30 dollar US...Respect LG, respect.
That's awesome! I was actually considering buying Cocktail Flow, Doodle God and Krashlander. That's 3 quality apps right there!
Well here is the bad news. After installing all the apps, I have discovered a sad truth. Not all the apps are up to date. The corresponding paid version in the Marketplace for an app, let's see Weave, is several releases ahead. Same with Cocktail flow. This was my initial fear as well. LG is basically offering these apps AS IS and probably will not update them past the 60-days offer. If the apps are not tied to the original developer, then basically we are screwed with no updates, and have to stick with out version 1.0 apps from LG. Nothing against LG, but if you promise something, then do it right.
You're right. This issue should be brought up to LG if we want a chance of getting updates. They probably won't do anything about it unless people make it known that it is important.
Hi! I'm one of the developers on Cocktail Flow. The current version in the LG appstore is indeed not the holiday version: this has to do with some issues with the process of getting them over to LG behind the scenes. However I can assure you that the app will soon be updated to the current version (and to other versions that would come out through the 60 days period).
The first update will still probably take some time, but after that there should be shorter delays between the marketplace and the LG store update.

Nice job! Easily one of the best looking apps on the platform.

Do you know what the plan is after the 60 day period? I assume they'd be removed from the app store, which in turn probably means no more updates. hopefully you have info to the contrary.

Thanks for the info, LG hasn't communicated how this works very well so far.

Thank you for the information. If only LG was so transparent in communicating with consumers. Cocktail Flow is one of the few apps in the marketplace that is just amazing to LOOK at, and even more impressive to use. I had it purchased before LG put it up. Amazing, and has gotten me some praise on my mixing formulas nowadays (Hehe). My question for you is whether the updates will stop after the 60 days, or will it be tied directly to your actual app...because if it is the former, that is kinda...a downer...
What happend to this apps? Two weeks ago they were available to download in LG marketplace, but now they arent.

+1 My device was reset after entering a pin incorrectly and now that I am trying to reinstall, these apps listed at the top of this thread are no longer on the marketplace. What is going on? Older LG apps are showing, newer ones are showing but not all of those are there:
Cocktail Flow - NO
Doodle God - NO
Color Sprouts - NO
envision for Basecamp - YES
Krashlander - NO
Colorize - NO
Weave - NO
Talking Ragdoll - NO
Mobile Sommelier - NO
Mr. Hat and the Magic cube - NO
Network Setup - YES
Any ideas?
I know some of the apps said "60 days of free download for lg handset owners" so they probably took them down because it's been 60 days.
This is what I was afraid of. As of now, the free apps that were off Marketplace (not the LG developed ones) are no longer available, possibly new ones are coming.
Two matters to think about:
1- If you reset your phone, there is no way to install the apps again, even if you downloaded it before. This is due to the fact that the xap files are not stored locally on your computer or anywhere when syncing with Zune. iTunes stores an app on the synced computer no matter what, even if the app has been removed from App Store.
Basically, if you have the apps, don't delete them, until someone figures out (or at least shares with us) how to extract xap files.
2- If you have the apps right now on your phone, then the apps are STUCK with their current version, probably forever. For example, if Weave updates their app to version 2.5 or above, you are stuck with 2.3 ANYWAYS. I voiced this concern early on if you look back at the earlier posts in this thread.
So, we should either petition LG to bring back the apps, and disallow new installs, which I believe has more to do with the Marketplace's structure than LG. OR, get Microsoft to tie our apps to the Marketplace equivalents.
Also, Microsoft should adopt Apple's model of backing installed apps through its Zune software.

OK. So are there other ways to grab the XAP files off the LG phones using TouchXplorer or Advanced Explorer? This way we won't need to wait until LG or MSFT figures out what they are going to do?
So far, I have not had any success with either of the above tools, but that could just be me, or maybe there is a device specific tool for the LG Optimus line of phones?

I think it should be implemented in MarketPlace. Normally when you buy app, you have it assign to live acount. To solve it, they need to make an option to assign a free application OR make an option to add a "prepayed" (or free for some group of users) option to some application and some device id (ie from LG). IMHO MarketPlace architecture does not allow any of this solutions now.
My biggest hurdle right now is that I have to hard reset my phone, which is the only solution to get rid of the 8000FFFF error in Zune Update. This means I won't be able to back it up on my PC. So somehow I need to grab the apps before that. Heh.

Interestingly, some of the apps we downloaded from the LG app store ARE actually tied to our live accounts, which you can check using the app purchase history in the Zune client. However, the apps listed are ONLY the permanent, LG developed or endorsed ones (eg. QR Reader, Metro Scanner, etc).
None of the Marketplace pulled ones are there. So there is no record of it whatsoever.
It is as if the developers just handed LG their xap files and LG submitted them (which is almost exactly what happened), and then when you install, it is like installing a homebrew xap...
So I won't feel too bad for pulling the xap out of the phone (when I figure out how).
UPDATE: Upon further inspection, it seems the 60-day offer apps WERE tied to the live accounts, but completely disappeared after being pulled from the Marketplace. Something similar happened with Twin Blades (the zombie killer nun game), which I still have installed, but there are no trace of it on my account.
I read about the Twin Blades game and it was pulled out of Marketplace supposedly because it was too violent and Microsoft had a no Mature game policy, that's what I think I read. Mango will supposedly have a rating system and supposedly we will start seeing more mature games.
Although I've read that Twin Blades will be released soon with the blood change to green.

As soon as i discovered I could give WP7 a try on my HD2, i started all the process...
Now it works i activated the live account and everything is ok.
I also succeded in having android still booting from the on purpose formatted SD, and i choose from magldr the desired OS.
Now... what?
I mean, WP7 seems incredibly smooth and i would like to go deeper in it, but i find myself lost.
here are my questions, being used to working with wm 6,5 and android :
1) How do i get my contacts/tasks/appointmentsback on the phone from outlook on pc ?
2) Is it possible to use the IGO8 Wm 6,5 version here with WP7?
3) how do you use the phone as an AP (wifi , usb or BT tether)?
BUT, ABOVE ALL ...
where do i find all the needed app?
I mean, the market seems tailored only to make you spend money.
There a lot of music file to download, but where are free apps?
In the Android Market you have a plethora of free apps, but i cannot find free apps for WP7 in its market, i only see apps to buy...
How can i have my Hd2 / WP7 ready to a daily use, comparable with android?
where are simple useful apps like
tapatalk, a nav, layar, wikitude, news and highlights, dictionaries, comic readers...
how can i customize the home screen like the easy android widget way?
I think i am missing something, it is my first dive into WP7 sea, so if an expert Wp7 lifeguard lends a hand, i would really appreciate any advice...
thanks in advance.
To answer your second question. No you won't be able to run any of your current Navigational software on WP7. From what i've gathered, there is currently no good paid for app for it. So no Copilot, TomTom, IGO.
It's the only thing keeping me from changing over to it actually.
WP7
Market Place is the best place to go. Search xda to find other apps, there are entire sections deticated to apps on this site. The only problem with installing from places other than the market place is that your phone has to be unlocked. If the app is not an Official app, meaning it can be found on the Market Place, then sooner or later will run into an error message requesting that you uninstall the app. This because your phone automatically locks itself after a while. You can fix by unlocking the phone again, but you will have to keep doing it everytime you want to run or install unsigned apps. If you want free apps, swipe left to the free apps section in market place.
Windows Mobile apps are not supported on WP7. You can get T-Mobile TelNav from market place, just search for it keyword tmobile
Search windowsphone.com for support setting up and syncing outlook.
No tether or wi-fi support available yet, at least none has been mentioned by anybody yet.
As for those apps you are looking for, chances are they are not on WP7 as of yet. But to make sure, search Market Place for them. To do so follow these steps: When in market place press the Home key. This will open Market Place search. (Outside of market place this key will open bing search)
For customizations go to windowsphone.com for guides and tutorials on how to use the phone and customize.
Most questions about windows phone 7 can be answered by searching or going to windowsphone.com

I am dual booting WP7 and Desire Z, I use co-pilot from Desire Z.
I have the same question about contact elsewhere but no responses.
I have separate contacts on my hd2 and hotmail and wish to keep them separate.
When you register your hotmail on wp7 it automatically downloads all 700 contact which I don't want in my phone.
My hd2 is synced with outlook but I don't think you can sync wp7 with outlook.
I had an omnia 7 for a week and returned it keeping my hd2
Reluctant to flash to wp7 nit I know I can move my 300 phone contacts over.
Non tethering is a real pain. HTC did confirm to my directly that the HD7 does support tethering but the function has been removed by the operators

It is a SD build, it is Dandiest's Desire Z 2.1 (the 2.2 fix / update caused it to lock up when mounting the SD card YMMV).
I followed this post : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913815 and the post it links to because at the time I could only mount one SD card at a time via my HD2.
I recomend reading the whole post and the post it links to several times before starting, I rushed into it and as a result made mistakes by not following the instructions properly, what should have taken 2-3 hours (mounting 1 SD card at a time) took nearer 8 LOL! cause I kept redoing steps until I realised how / where I was doing them wrong. This was last Sunday.
EDIT: I have a 16 gig class 6 SD card and an 8 gig SD class 6 card, I used the 8 GIG initially when installing MAGLDR and WP7 then following the instructions above transfered the WP7 partition to the 16 GIG card. This gave me a smidging under 8 gig for WP7 and a smidging under 8 gig for Android, not huge but not too shabby neither. I see you can buy 32 gig cards now, but the fast ones cost £80 so that is something for my future

You can go to Settings, Email & Accounts, click on the accounts and uncheck contacts, except for hotmail. Go figure. But I think you can sync with outlook using exchange server directly, if not sync using exchange with google and sync outlook with google as well.
Hello everyone,
I hope with your knowledge of the system you will be able to help me with some of my questions.
I would like to make sure that I know what I am doing before swapping to a new system.
Here we go than...
1. I am currently using Netflix and Hulu services via VPN (and Windows 7 + Chrome), will I be able to use them with Windows 8 without any problems?
2. I understand that there is no option to side load apps for the Modern Interface other than from MS Store... is there any way to go round it? Reason for this question is connected to Q1. If I would want to use Netflix/Hulu app instead of browser will I be able to get it? (I suspect that there will be a market geolocalization thing... as it is with WP. In iOS or Android it is not a big problem though...
3. I got my original Windows Vista HP (32b) in my desk, purchased as an OEM... should I install it on my PC before buying an upgrade to WIn 8 Pro? What other options than "upgrade W8Pro" will there be for ppl. to purchase new system...
4. If I get a tablet/hybrid to replace iPad with more versatile device (x86 architecture) will I have to get 2 browsers...2 mail clients, etc... in order to be able to work in both modes desktop/modern? Considering that such a device will have limited disk space it seems like a problem. As far as I know modern interface is not really an interface but it is more like a second separate and quite independent system. This means that if I open Word/browser/mail in one mode and move on to continue to work in second I will have to start those app again and data between them will not be synchronised? Yes?
Like... all those program started in Modern Interface will no be visible and accessible on my task bar in desktop mode...
5. Along with changing system on my desktop and getting replacement for my iPAd I am thinking about swapping my phone. I use Lumia 710 and as much as I like the general feel of WP I hate that it is even more "closed" than iOS. Will I loose or gain functionality if I'll get Android device instead of WP8?
1, yes not a prob at all its the same as windows 7
2, I am 99% sure this will be hacked soon but you could also go for Enterprise edition or get a dev license (if you can get an edu email then you don't even need to pay)
3, not to sure myself sorry I have software assurance and so didn't look this up.
4, Windows 8 has a built in mail app (can be removed), you shouldn't think of it as 2 interfaces but more that you have some metro apps some x86 apps the desktop and the modern interface are as one. This whole hula balu about 2 diff interfaces is rubbish. Also the main browser is the one used in metro so you don't download a second one you just set it as your main one and you have both interfaces.
5, depends on what you mean by functionality, both os's have there strong and weak points it really Is down to how you use it and whatyou want from the phone.

Hi,
thanks for your answer.
2. Can you give me more details about it? What is Enterprise edition and about this edu e-mail address...How does it all work...
4. Can I start desktop apps in Metro (can they be pinned?) or vice versa? IE10 is default in Metro - if I use default Metro mail app... can I change default browser to Chrome (btw: how does it work in Win8...as in Win7? Or are there any differences).
IE10... does it sync between devices like Chrome?
I install enterprise edition but I get no sound it may be the drivers but I am not sure realtek has drivers for windows 8 yet

2. As with other versions of Windows you get multiple versions depending on your needs budget etc. Windows 8 come in Windows RT (ARM version (does not support old style x86 software, this is for cheap tablets etc and will only be sold preinstalled)), Windows 8 (basic version), Windows 8 Pro and then Windows 8 Enterprise. Enterprise has a few extra features for big business and own of them is the ability to side load metro apps meaning a company can write custom metro software.
The thing with the edu email is that .edu is for educational institutions schools university's etc. So that MS can get students using its products they let you have a dev license free for the time your in study. All you need to do is find someone who has an email from a school college etc and sign up with there email. I used my dads he is a lecturer. With a dev license you can unlock a couple of devices.
4. There is no 2 separate things here metro and desktop are NOT 2 diff working spaces. Try to think of the start screen as the same thing as the start menu from the old windows except instead of just a list it fills the screen. You can put any app software etc on this screen the same as you could before with the start menu. Older software does have ugly icon squares but there is a thread here with software to make your own metro style icons. The one thing to note though is that you can only open metro apps on 1 monitor ie you cant pin your mail app to one screen and then open cut the rope on another. This is not true for the desktop. Metro apps also open in there own sandbox environment, this means they can not interact with anything outside of themselves, they can share info etc but they cant change anything and so on.

2. As with other versions of Windows you get multiple versions depending on your needs budget etc. [...]
4. There is no 2 separate things here metro and desktop are NOT 2 diff working spaces. [...].

2. Ok.. I guess I'll have to wait and see what is out there and for how much.
Are you sure that with dev licence I will be able to use US Store/UK Store/etc... as I please?
4. Do I read you correctly (I do work with 2 screens) that I will not be able to have Chrome (I believe it does not support Metro yet) on both screens (to get data and to write in the second). One would thought that I should be able to have any combination of software/apps I want on both screens - Metro x Metro; Desktop x Metro; Metro x Desktop; Desktop x Desktop.
Truly strange and quite disturbing...
New questions :
Are there apps for Metro from Hulu, Netflix, BBC (iPlayer)?
Will they be OK to use with VPN tunnelling or I will have to use browser any way...
Will Hulu work on tablet/hybrid with x86 Windows 8 or will it say I am using mobile device (as it is with iOS/Android) and will not work in its Free version.

Chrome does now support Metro you just have to have it set as your default browser. The 2 screens is only Metro style apps so yes you cant have 2 metro style chromes but you can still open as many desktop/old style chromes as you want just as you did in windows 7. With dual screen one screen will always display its half of the desktop the metro start screen only goes onto 1 monitor. It is that one monitor that metro apps will run. It is a huge blunder in my opinion but what can you do.
If you are running a desktop pc esp with multi monitors then you wont notice to much diff in looks and feel. You will notice a huge jump in speed though but a loss of transparent windows . It is also worth putting a start link on the taskbar as sometimes getting the corner between screens is tricky (well not tricky but faster if you have a bigger target), just google "show start.exe".
As for the marketplace from diff country that I don't think would be possible I thought you where talking about side loading apps. You may be able to with the use of vpn but I cant confirm this.
Ok, thanks for the info.
I guess the best would be to simply try Win8 before I buy it.
3 (new) questions than:
What is the latest ver. of Win 8 I should download?
I do not own any VM software - is there (an easy) way to test Win* under Win7 (I dont mind that system will not be as fast, etc... but I would be able to see how it works...)
If I would have to make a proper install of Win8 on my PC... how hard will it be to go back to my current Win7?
As I keep 90% of ma data either in the cloud or on a on a different partitions on my drives formatting C: is not a problem... but I have read that once Win 8 is installed Win7 does not want to format this drive and install itself on it.... true?

Your best bet is to use a diff hard drive that way you can dual boot into windows 7 and windows 8 then when your done unplug the hard drive test you can boot into 7 still then format. This is the best way though I have heard of issues going back I have never had any, you boot to a disk then format the drive when you install 7 so I don't see how it could be, maybe they are trying to keep there files etc ie downgrade instead of a new install.
you can get a 90 day trial of rtm (the final build as it will be sold) here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/jj554510.aspx But note you will need to uninstall it and reinstall if you want to keep using windows 8 after the 90 days.
Last thing,
I plan to install Win8 (today) on my external 160GB disk.
It will be connected to my PC via e-Sata... any advice before I proceed?
I dont want to put it on disk where is my current Win7 as I need it daily to work... so this should work... right? (motherboard is old; Abit Ab9Pro)
If this hasn't already been answered, I use tor for Netflix and it doesn't work will on windows 8. I can load the home but then it goes back to the UK version. It works fine on 7.

Sorry I got bit confused...
Where do you use it (UK or USA)?
You try to access Netflix via VPN and Metro app or browser?
I'm in the UK and I use tor to access the US version with desktop chrome and proxy switchy to act as a Tor button.

Perhaps it is a TOR (and selected exit node) problem...
Try this 3h trial of VPN (free) and see if it is working - http://www.hideipvpn.com/freetrial/
Do you use Chrome under desktop or Modern UI mode?
Can you recommend a good (free) set of video codecs? I cant play mkv at the moment
