[Q] iPad to Galaxy Tab?

Hi everyone, I'm Rob and I'm an iPad user......
I'm thinking about getting rid of the iPad due to the complete ballache of getting media onto the thing (via the hateful iTunes), the ridiculous Apple locking down of apps and having to jailbreak it to do what I want. The last straw is Apple stopping you from using iBooks to access bought content if the iPad is jailbroken which worries me as to what they will do next...
Now, I have a Milestone running Cyanogen Gingerbread and it is great but I'm wondering what happens if I log into my Google account on both devices at the same time. What happens with the apps, can I use them on both devices, will they appear on both devices if I install from the Marketplace? If I delete one from my phone, will it delete form the Tab? So many questions
Has anyone done the same thnig and have you regretted it?

Normally Apps are associated with the Ident number of the Phone, which is how developers get round individuals using a single license on multiple devices.

I've not found that at all thus far.
I have several Android devices, all linked to the same account, and all running mostly the same apps. The only times they don't, are when there is another level of activation (e.g. CoPilot).
Google do provide a mechanism for developers to lock down their applications to a single device if they wish (see here), but I've yet to encounter such an application.

Okay, fair point Dave.
My findings are based mostly on the Medical Apps I have installed and yes, Co-Pilot as one other.

Now that.... I can easily concur with...
I can't remember the last time I switched on my i-Pad.
... and I'm looking forward to getting the New Galaxy Tab 2 to add to my Samsung collection (Galaxy S & Tab)

I love the iPad itself and hardly ever switch on the laptop but it is Apples attitude to the user that if you don't want to conform to their way, you are to be stopped and treated like a criminal.
Also, with the Tab, I'll be able to copy and paste movies, music and photos onto it easily from my NAS. The iPad photos are reduced in size when copying over. I have 20Gb of family photos and want the full size version rather than a cut down version as a portable backup.

I'm a former Ipad user and what I can say is you will miss the polish.
Things I hate about my tab
1. Browser
2. Youtube app
3. Picture app
4. It plays multiple audio sources at the same time. The ipad would phase one source out should you play something else.
5. No audio controls in the notification bar
Thinks I love about my tab
1. Email
2. Downloading media directly to the device
3. Torrent apps - love that I can dl directly to the device.
4. Form factor - I never read a thing on my ipad, I found it to large to use in bed whereas the tab is perfect.
5. Customization of the os - the things you don't like you can change.
In the end the ipad is a better consumer product, the galaxy tab is still running software designed for a phone. While it is a strong contender it won't be fair to judge the tab until it gets apps designed specificly for it and a proper os.

Oh the app is okay but I felt the ipad offered higher resolutions. The videos always looked sharp as they do on a computer. On my tab a lot of videos look blurry.

I hated ipad YouTube app it would always stutter when playing videos while the tab is smooth sailing. I do agree that stock browser sucks though.

I was in the same boat - former iPad user. I have to say that the iPad certainly is more polished as a tablet (too many times Galaxy Tab acts like a giant phone), but I wound never go back. The size, the customization, and ability to do anything I want with it is a huge plus for me.
I do hope that at some point we will get a good port of Honeycomb, but not holding my breath. Gingerbread sure would be nice though, running it now on my Nexus One and I really like it.

you can have all your purchased apps on every device that meets the software requirements, as long as every device has the same gmail account on them.
and for the ipad....
what I love about my Gtab is the size, as other had mentioned, it's perfect for reading and holding with one hand
Im kindly sad that Samsung is going to the 10.1 inches race, although that's much better for browsing webpages than 7 inches.
In my Opinion (IMO) you should consider the LG Optimus pad if you want the best of both worlds, the size is smaller than the ipad (8.9") but at the same time is better for portability and reading like the Gtab

I agree the best device will be the LG tablet simply for the form factor.
I recall only bringing my ipad to work and using it at home. The tab goes everywhere because it fits in a pocket.
On another note if you get a gtab don't get the cdma version, its barely supported by the xda community.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Good to hear from ex iPad users who don't regret going to the Tab.
Already being an Android user (G1, Magic, Milestone), I know what to expect from the OS itself and love the customisability and community efforts, just wish I had the coding skills that some people on XDA have.

I think it's the other way around. The iPad's own resolution is low, so regular youtube videos look good. But the G-Tab's higher resolution makes regular youtube videos look bad. If you choose "HQ" streams in youtube, the videos look fine on the G-Tab.

The Tab is 1024x600 whereas the iPad is 1024x768 so the iPad is higher res.

Hmmm. but the size is different? 7" vs. 10"? Perhaps then it's the density that makes the difference?

How do the apps run on the N7?

I'm about to buy the tablet myself in a few days but everywhere and anywhere everyone and anyone says that Android doesn't have nearly as many tablet-optimised apps as the iPad. Do the apps run fine or not? I mean do they look good and is it easy to use them or not? Because for the iPad I know there's a separate category so there'll be apps for that.
So could someone confirm if the apps on this tablet run fine or not?

Ok just my experience, on android many more apps are tablet optimized.
When I was using an ipad it seemed they were all small or had the option to 2x it making it blurry and horrid.
I guess though the Google play store just doesn't show you apps it they're not compatible though, which is fine because for an app that isn't compatible with tabs there are 10 others that are.

My friend there are more apps in the play Store that you could ever use or even fit into the N7. With all the customizations you can make from OCing to roms the sky is the limit concerning the tablet. All the options that android offers will always keep apple in the rear view mirror.
Yes the apps are easy to access, start and run quickly.
Concerning apps and compatibility always use a browser to see all the apps and look at the comments to see if there are any made by N7 owners. Since I have modified the dpi on mine most apps come up as not available and that is when I check the comments. If it's something I want to buy I'll switch my dpi back to stock. It's a pain but I'm never giving up true tablet ui.

In my exp i've had by means of trade through best buy almost all of the most recent tabs. in order generic android tab eclair 1, archos 101, ipad, ipad 2, xoom acer a500, playbook, lenovo k1, hp touchpad, playbook again, xoom again, achos 80 g9, acer 501, and nexus 7. Android is my favorite. I also like web os and bb os. ios has better game selection hands down. Android has better free apps hands down bb web had no apps. so all depends on what you want it for

Well with all the quad-core machines coming out these days I'm quite sure there'll be loads of great games for Android too. The third post is interesting. So the apps don't seem like they're just multiplied in size. That's good to know. As long as they look natural I'm happy because the Appstore with all it's apps is horrible [my sister got an iPhone 4S the other day and I kept looking for apps and I wasn't THAT impressed. In fact the Play Store is MUCH better.]
I'm going with the Nexus and I'm sure I'll be a happy customer just like 95% of people who bought the thing. [the 5% are the people who're experiencing problems but even they were happy with their device.]

I'm not worried about the app selection, The apps that i uses are made by big companies and I am sure they will be updated quickly. Once a group of devs gets a hand on a tablet or two thing will fly. They will purchase them the same time that we do. I don't have a ton of apps on my android devices, just a mix of some for work and play. A list other than Google products that I would put on my tablet, are made by Rovio, Slacker, Adobe, Evernote, XDA!, and a few website apps. The only real app I am concerned about would be apps for my local news and weather stations. If i was a tablet gamer I might be a bit concerned at first, but for me If I can surf the web at high speeds, and have music and movies playing for entertainment on long road trips with battery life to spare I am happy. This hardware is new and cutting edge, but will be a new standard for other manufactures to compete with, so more apps will be out there in time.

It's not no apps.only some apps which have low graphics won't work well.... for the time being

No problem for me. My main usage is watching videos and reading comics. Also I believe app developper will provide tablet optimized nice apps for N10 and N7.

I'm not so worried about App selection as I am usability. I recently bought the Transformer Prime TF700t, it's a nice tablet with monster specs and was the only decently designed 1080p android tablet, however Windows 8 is now out (I' not referring to RT, not really interested in the RT version because of lack of apps).
There are 3 major choices you should consider when looking at tablets this holiday:
1: Nexus 10
2: iPad 4
3: Windows 8 PRO
App selection is obviously the best on the new iPad, 2nd going to android and lastly going to Windows, but Windows 8 PRO DOES run all of the older windows 7 apps. SO if you want to run ANYTHING on your tablet (almost anything you use as a windows user), for power users that's a definite win.
So that's why I'm really really considering windows 8. As I type this I'm realizing more and more that windows 8 still won't have a lot of tablet-optimized apps making most of the tablet experience kind of a fail, and only using the windows mode would really be useful (for me), I'm talking myself into the Nexus 10 becau 2560X1600 SOUNDS AMAZING!:laugh:

Best not to compare usability between TF700 and the N10. Aside from the poor app selection being the same, this is a different beast. Also, the way Holo works, I think with Android phones leading the front we ought to see apps that at the very least don't look crap on the tablet.

I'm not worried about the app situation. As others have said in different threads, Android's scalability really changes things so it isn't the same issue that it was on the Mac when they had only a few tablet apps. Second, now with the N7 and N10 I expect we'll see a lot more apps, particularly the good ones, designed with these tablets in mind.

I'm a developer, I'm getting a Nexus 10. That has to be good for everyone else, I'm sure other devs will be doing the same.

N10 will be a hit. Developers will pump out apps. There is a lot of cash to be made if this becomes the industry standard.

The market really dictates if apps are made for Android or not. When tablets first came out it was only iPad, therefore, all tablet apps were made for iPad. As Android tablets got more accepted and are now a major presence in the tablet world, market demand dictates that if you want your app to be widely used, you will make it tablet compatible for iOS and Android. What is really difficult for developers is the huge fragmentation in Android both phones and tablets. If you make an app for iPad, you only have to make it for the 7 and 10, both running the same OS. If you want to make an app for Android you have to make it for N number of tables made by N number of manufactures, many of which are running different OS versions.
There are already many great tablet enabled apps for Android tablets, over the last 6 months I have actually seen developers come out with tablet updates for their apps. Don't worry, if you buy an N10, you won't have issues getting use out of it.

Of curse you should get the Nexus 10!! The apps gonna come out eventually don't worrie.

Nexus 10 vs ultra book? Which to get?

Hello,
In the past few weeks I have been getting pretty excited about getting a nexus 10.
Mainly due to the large screen with its insane resolution.
I have been an android user since my first smartphone.
Currently I have a Galaxy Nexus and a nexus 7.
I love the 7. It has great portability and I take it outside often due to its small size.
I am however thinking about adding a nexus 10 to my gadgets because when at home doing mainly couch browsing, I wish for a bigger screen, especially to use chrome.
However in the last few days I saw that for just a bit more I can buy an ultra book with a 13 inch screen hard drive, 4 gb of ram and not too much weight.
On that price range the screen is just 1366x768, but for a 13 inch laptop it might be enough.
So, hanging on the fence here.
What should I go for?
Nexus 10 or ultra book?

I've been using a 13 inch Macbook Pro for a couple of years and am replacing it with the Nexus 10.
Having recently gotten a PC again, I've found myself using my Mac less and less. With a powerful PC, the only thing I really needed my mac for was for internet access on the go and so my mac had basically become a cumbersome internet machine - something that a tablet is far more suited to.
It all depends on what you want to use it for. I do photo editing, light pc gaming and lots of internet browsing. My PC can handle all of that and when I want to be mobile a tablet is a more practical option than a laptop. I wouldn't want to just have a tablet because of the things I do use my PC for, but if I was just internet browsing then I could probably manage with just a tablet.
If you want something for couch browsing, then why would you pay more for a laptop which is more cumbersome to use than a tablet? The specs on the ultrabook are fairly average, and if you're only planning on using it for things a tablet could easily accomplish, then you may as well save the money and buy the thing suited for the task.

I was in the same boat like you last week, i ended up buying a Asus Zenbook Prime for $1,030 with Window 8, can't compare a Android tablet to a full PC, now if you want both a tablet with a full PC i would look at something like this

Currently I just have my Galaxy Nexus and nexus 7.
I don't currently own a computer.
My wife has a laptop I use when I need to do something pc related like using the nexus toolkit and torrents and such.
But that kind of use is not too frequent.
I like android os as I use Google services and having everything in sync between the devices is a plus.
I use Tapatalk to browse the forums on the 7 and some apps like ebay and imdb for specific uses.
When I use my Nexus 7 at home I wish it was bigger. I find it strange bit cumbersome to use chrome with several open tabs and for more intensive Web browsing.
So the nexus 10 looks like an option to me.
I don't work with a computer at home. For Work i have the office computer.
So, my doubts:
- would a nexus 10 overlap my Nexus 7 and one of the devices become redundant?
- would the 10 inch screen of the nexus 10 be big enough to overcome the limitations I find on the 7?
- would an ultra book be more agile and faster?
- would an ultra book be comfortable to use without a table or desk? Just for couch surf?

I dont know about this it might be dumb or you might end up challenging yourself but have you never thought of building your "own" computer, here is just one of million example, this is on the extreme side since its water cooled

Ultrabook Cons:
If you buy a Windows 8 ultrabook now, you're going to regret it in a few months once Haswell comes out. You paying about $800 - $1200 (ultrabook - ultrabook convertible) for something that will last only about 4-7 hours. Wait about half a year and the Haswell chips should allow at least 7 hours of use.
Tablets would be far more comfortable on your lap. Also considering how ultrabooks have air vents, if you block a vent on accident, your ultrabook might end up frying itself. So I'd think ultrabooks are far more comfortable to use on a table or desk.
Ultabrook Pros:
Ultrabooks are far far far far more powerful than tablets. You can't deny it. An i5 or i7 processor will blow any other mobile chips out of the water. So the performance will definitely be more "agile and faster."
My recommendation is that you either wait for the Haswell chips to be used in Ultrabooks or just go with the Nexus 10.

If you need to be able to run demanding Windows programs, then by all means get an ultrabook. If it's just going to be used for light casual tasks like web browsing, the tablet is the better/cheaper option.
The only thing I'm concerned about with the Nexus 10 is what the screen quality is like. No, not the resolution, the black level & colours. If it's anything like the Note 10.1 it will be very good imo.

Had a wild idea today.
I can get a new ipad 4 for a sweet price of 400 euros.
The same price that the nexus 10 is supposed to cost from the play store.
Should I give the ipad a chance?
Or is the nexus 10 better?
How would the ipad play with my Android devices in the terms of syncing email, calendar, contacts?

It depends if you can live with their walled garden eco system. But you do get more optimized apps and games.
I wouldn't get one personally. Android allows me to do almost everything I can do on my laptop. IOS is too limiting for me. I also don't like Apple, but that's another story.

I used to use apple computers. Sold my latest imac this year.
I liked it more than windows.
Trouble free.
I never had a ios device.
But for what I use the tablet, I guess I could make do with an ipad, and the 4:3 screen is sweet for Web browsing.
And Google has a gmail app and chrome app, so I guess it would be doable.
I guess I could buy it and if I don't like it, sell it.
Thoughs?

Definitely. That is why the ultrabook is far more versatile and can become your tablet, laptop, computer, etc. But if you don't need Windows software, then you're 100% right. The money doesn't justify simple internet browsing and casual gaming.

"Best user experience" is based on you. "Feeling walled in" to the ecosystem, while maybe true, certainly won't be a problem for someone who simply likes a trouble free device.

I would probably prefer the nexus 10.
The problem is that Google does not sell it trough the play store here in Portugal.
So I will probably have to resort to some sort of tricks to buy one or will have to pay more than the play store price of 399 euros.
The ipad I can pickup the new 4 here with a company cuppon for 410 euros...
So the easiness of purchase makes me want to try the ipad.
If only google could come to their senses in regard to distribution of their products...

Tbh I just can't get by the fact that ios won't let you change the default browser. Currently on my sgs3 I don't have a default browser so every time I click on something it asks me what browser I want to use. Also I like having a user accessible file system because it just makes downloading things like pdfs and such so much easier. I just wanted to throw this out there because I considered buying an ipad due to the gpu, but have decided not to due to the obvious os limitations.

I am however thinking about adding a nexus 10 to my gadgets because when at home doing mainly couch browsing, I wish for a bigger screen, especially to use chrome.
However in the last few days I saw that for just a bit more I can buy an ultra book with a 13 inch screen hard drive, 4 gb of ram and not too much weight.
On that price range the screen is just 1366x768, but for a 13 inch laptop it might be enough.
So, hanging on the fence here.
What should I go for?
Nexus 10 or ultra book?

It really depends on what your goal is and how much you are willing to pay.
Personally, the most action packed system on the market (soon to be) is as someone else mentioned Ativ Smart Pro. Here is quick list of why:
Ativ Smart Pro
+Full HD screen - I owned Transformer Infinity and have seen iPad 3 a few times. The screen resolution jump from regular screen i.e. iPad 2, or current android tablets to Infinity's full HD screen was big. From full HD to Retina display did not seem as much. But certainly, good to have high resolution.
+Wacom stylus - I had Galaxy Note 10.1 for little. Capative screen with just stylus is markedly different in accuracy and experience compared to inductive pen technology.
+ Real windows - The Windows store market is nowhere that of Android or iOS; however, when you add legacy windows applications, things totally change.
+ Keyboard dock - Can use as real ultrabook PC
+ Expandable memory - One reason I am really holding myself back from buying Nexus 10. This was one of the major reason I jumped from iOS to Android.
Major downsides
-Price $1200 - Considering this is real ultrabook PC, and high end tablet. If you buy both, it may perhaps cost similar but still a bit too expensive. Plus as stated below, the tablet experience may not be as perfect.
-Battery life - Listed 9 hours, but in reality it may be like 4-5 hours (rumor)
- Weight - Close to 1.9 lbs is a bit heavy for pure tablet.
Alternatively, Ativ Smart PC or other atom based real Windows 8 tablet may be a valid option. It has Atom processor i.e. slower than i5; however, longer battery life, lighter weight. However, it does not have Full HD. But cost is cheaper like $600-$700. It is atom underpowered for real full blown PC power i.e. you won't be able to play skyrim or high end graphics game, but still has Wacom stylus, MS office, and even sunspider benchmark is still faster than any other Android or iPad 4.

For $1200, I would much rather have a $400 Nexus 10 and a $800 ultrabook instead of one compromised machine. I really wouldn't recommend anyone to get a X86 tablet until Haswell comes out.

As an Android lover... if you're not interested in tweaking or customizing your device, and/or are not willing to put up with lots of workarounds and the like, get an iDevice. I'm sure android will eventually be just as polished with just as many tablet apps, but right now you'll need a thick skin and a love for the platform itself to want the N10 over a iPad4.
That said, there are certainly many advantages to the Nexus 10 for me and my uses, and I wouldn't trade it for an iPad in a million years. But if you care about a smooth experience, get an iPad.

Hows your Tablet after X amount of months?

Hey guys! I'm looking to buy an Nexus 10 in the next few weeks but I'd like to get some reviews or opinions on your guys experience after using it for some time now. I have a nexus 4 and am real into the android eco system and all but I also have an Ipad and am worried about the app selection. Do you guys find it lacking? ANyone else have an ipad to compare experiences? I love android but if all Im gonna be doing is using the chrome app then I might as well stick to the Ipad and not spend the extra money. What do you guys think? I use my Ipad for mostly media consumption, web browsing, flipboard, reading books & time magazine and other tablet magazine/newspapers, movies and music, and some productivity stuff. Help me out guys! Also if you have the 16 gig version, are you finding yourself out of space? I may opt for the 32gig.

After 4 months of using my Nexus 10 it's defiantly one of my favorite devices that I own, my friend was a hard core ipad user but he recently switched to a Nexus 10 and really likes it. As far as app wise, Android has come a long way in regards to tablet optimized app's and virtually all of the major app's are optimized for tablets. For media consumption I love using the Nexus 10 I often find myself watching Netflix on that at night because of the great screen over my TV. It's also great for regular movies, and tv shows you have loaded on and the speakers for music are quite loud for a tablet. Web browsing is great with chrome fast and smooth. I haven't tired flipboard personally so I can't comment on that unfortunately, for magazines and newspapers most seem to read nicely but a couple of them can be oddly formatted. For productivity, I use app's like Photo Editor and Sketchbook Pro for Tablets which all work well in usage experiences. As far as storage goes I have the 32 GB version and I am glad I went for it over the 16 GB because there is not sd-card slot it's better to have the storage capacity for when you need it rather then being frustrated when you run out of storage room.

I've also had it for 4 months. I'm a full time student and I find myself using my tablet every day as opposed to my computer. Honestly I didn't expect it to be as useful as it turned out to be. The only thing I can't use it for is advanced video editing. And the only thing that I prefer doing on my computer rather than Nexus is typing long essays. I don't actually have a tablet keyboard though so I imagine it would be much smoother with a physical keyboard and mouse.
As previously stated, my Nexus 10 is an awesome media device. I have a lot of 3D action games that I enjoy playing. Plus whenever I go a few days without my Nexus, I'm always blown away by how crisp the screen is when I come back. You never permanently get used to the high quality screen.
