Fried Epic - Epic 4G General

I know this is unfixable but I want to see if you guys could know why this happened. A few months ago in winter 2012 my sister epic 4G got rained on and her battery is now pink. But nothing happened .now yesterday while she was charging her phone the charger blew and her micro USB port was broke. Just when you think it couldn't get worse when I let her use my battery I turn her phone on and it was bootlooping like crazy. When it finally booted It was stuck in safe mode and when you unlocked the phone it would reboot. I then went into recovery to wipe and it was frozen in recovery. Then when I reboot it (Battery Pull) kept rebooting into recovery. Then I kicked it out of recovery with the home button but the volume keys weren't working in recovery so I couldn't wipe. I think she has major bad luck. I never experienced something like this EVER. She in contract until July 2013 so she can't easily switch. She still in college so she needs her phone. Why do you think all this happened? She is also stock FC09 not rooted.

Water damage doesn't immediately "show itself" sometimes... probably a delayed reaction to the water damage...

It is also possible the USB port is shorting which caused the charger to blow and the strange behavior. Try with the battery out, clean the phone port with 91% alcohol using a toothbrush. Let it dry for a half hour. Then see if you can get it into download mode and reflash stock FC09 through odin.

Ahh its done no responce with USB At all . Its officially Dead. When I wiggled the USB after cleaning the port like you said to get Odin to see it. No responce. I don't know what to tell her. She's gonna have to find an old sprint phone 1 Less Epic 4G .

Actually, I have successfully unbricked my other epic, so now I have two.... I have 2 peoplee who have dibs right now,, but if they don't contact me by Monday, it yours (or your sisters, lol)... the only thing I ask is you cover the shipping... let me know...

Still available... doesn't look like the other 2 will be contacting me... pm me if interested...

If your epic 4g is sprint and you aren't sending it in for a replacement, I'm still looking to get my hands on a dead 4g for shipping costs. Let me know if you are interested.

Im sorry for not repling as i havent been on the forum much. She was told by a sprint rep to buy insurance and pay a deductable to get it replaced she did that.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app

I'll go more in dept. She said the guy at sprint looked at her phone. Didn't even check the battery and said it looks like the phone has water damage. And to get it replace she has to buy insurance then file a claim.

Exchange problem... HELP!

So I was talking to Sprint and they finally processed an exchange for my Epic. Problem is, I went to stock with odin and everything is working fine now!! Sadly, the replacement has already been sent out and I'm left with a "good" phone. The problem is now that my phone is working fine what do I do?! I'm really scared I'll get billed 500 for shipping in a non defective phone.
-desperate for help
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Pretty sure you're going to be fine, as long as there is no cosmetic damage to the phone that they can blame any of your problems on.

Hmm I have some scratches on the side its minor though the silver was kinda chipping off like really minor though.
Would going to DK28 then stock 2.1 create problems with the phone?

Pull the plug in the middle of using odin. That'll make it not work for sure.

You won't get charged as along as you !send the phone back!..
and really..
I have never heard of them charging for a rooted phone.. They reflash it and move on at qa.. They might charge back a percentage of the cost from the rep but not you, the customer, as there is technically no official stance from the company about rooting. Just that, if you have a problem with the device, the next troubleshooting step is to reflash the stock software because you cannot guarantee the same "experience" on a custom rom. And some custom roms remove troubleshooting modes and the sprint version of QPST..
*edit * for the cosmetic damage reference..
Sprint now covers any physical damage except severely damaged LCDs.. As long as its not a purely *cosmetic* repair.. (ie replacing housing for scratches) but as long as there is a stated issue with the device (freezing due to processor damage from a fall) it is covered at no cost if you have insurance.

Charging port broke... Should I unroot before I taking it in

Hey guys... I'm rooted but my charging port happen to break... Should I unroot my evo before taking it in for insurance replacement? I was thinking of just dropping it in water? What should I do?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Yes you should unroot just to be smart about it.
Why would you drop it in water?
So you have to pay the $100 deductible?!?
Either way I think I will pay the 100 dollars... I don't believe I have factory warranty....

You pay the $8 a month right?
That covers manufacturer defects.
Unless they see physical damage, they will cover it.

If you did not physically break the soldering pads off of the board then a sprint repair center will replace your phone for free. If you did then they will tell you to file a claim.

it's not a short term fix, but buy an external charger with a couple of extra batteries from China for $20. It will take a few weeks to get, but I never charge my phone, just switch batteries.
I do pay the insurance fee a month.... Now I'm looking to see where I can find the link to unroot my phone.... does anyone have it handy.... I used unrevoked... I think that was the name of it....

Can't you just open the phone and carefully solder the charging port back on? It should not be too difficult and you'll save a lot of time.

It's not that easy with the tiny boards on cell phones. You would have to be an expert at soldering and have specialized soldering equipment.
Charging port broke on mine also... Called Sprint to ask to replace it. You need to be stern when talking with the rep, this is a known defect of the EVO. And they will replace it at no charge as they did for me. I unrooted and had a replacement within 3 days. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately everyone's experience varies based on the store...even since the policy change.
Since unrooting takes only a few minutes its worth doing.

The port will move reguardless of which condition your port is in. The only way to know for sure is to open up the phone. Which a sprint repair center will do for free for you since you have tep.

I returned 2 phones to a repair center and all I did was flash a rooted stock rom and they replaced two phones due to a charging port no questions asked
My charging port broke, unfortunately my battery was so low I couldn't unroot. Luckily the guy at the sprint store was nice enough to work with me on it anyway and replaced free. He said that they weren't supposed to repair rooted HTC phones (for whatever reason). So hope that you're able to unroot and avoid the hassle.
My charging port also broke. So I took it to my local sprint store and they told me to return it to stock condition and come back. So I hopped on xda and downloaded a couple of things and unrooted it right in front of him on the spot.
I suspected the guy behind the counter didn't mind too much since he was showing me his rooted EVO running CM7. I should have my new phone in a couple of days.

Its very easy to install sice it doesnt have only the screen and the touch digitizer but also all the hardware realted to them so to change it you dont have to use a heater gun as you should do with the other products...

If he did pay the esn is cleared. I got an evo 4g that way. I bought with a bad esn more than a year ago when they were going for 300. I paid 200 just cause of the bad esn. A few months later I went to a friend at sprint and she checked it for me and it was cleared. Only way to get a bad esn is to report it stolen or not pay the bill. I'm sure the guy eventually paid the bill

Thanks Bmoreboy! It arrived today...nice glue job! I tried everything to get it into download mode but no dice. I got a little knife and sliced away at the glue. It ripped off part of the keyboard including the 1 key.....but miracle it still pressed in. Got it in download mode and odin'd FC09....passed but still stuck on Samsung. Repartitioned, EFS clear and it almost booted once except really really slow. After 20 minutes of the Galaxy S screen I figured I would try Odin again. Still stuck on Samsung. Tried everything from DI18 to EH17 to FC09. I guess it is the wierdest Brick I ever seen. Tried Heimdall too. They all pass and reboot.
If you need the screen Nube, it's yours. But the protective case is glued to it too.

If it doesn't like to charge anymore then its from the battery getting wet maybe. When my sons continy drowned in his backpack from a water bottle I dried it out for awhile in rice, battery too.
Amazon has cheap bats and extended bats and case for continuum.

Yeah, that might be the case in part, but there is also the issue of the phone registering that is is plugged in only after twisting and bending the cord around the phone in a certain manner... It isn't the cord, because I tried it with like four others--it is definitely the phone itself... I think i'll keep this phone though until the Sammy S IV is released (and unlockable by devs ) for Verizon off contract So I still have some time to fiddle around!
I bought an external battery charger for mine off ebay for 5, I saw some for a little more with a battery. Then it wouldn't have to charge via the phone and you would have an extra battery.
Having said all that, are you working on one last great master mod release. Your continuum magnum opus?

That's what I've got. The desk charger came with a "Y" usb cord so I can have one battery charging in the charger and still plug the phone in. It's great having that second battery, if the phone gets low just swap them out and go. And it is a factory Samsung battery, so no issues with it.
