[Q] Nexus 7 actually 6.5 inch?

Since the Nexus has the on screen buttons, does that mean that the majority of the time, the viewable, usuable screen will be less than 7? Or is this 7inch PLUS extra for the buttons? Hope this makes sense.

Yes, you are somewhat correct. The on-screen buttons are factored into the equation when referring to screen size. However, they disappear or fade under certain circumstances, but for the most part they will always linger where they are.

but they are always mods to remove the onscreen buttons and you can always use an app like button savior. i do it all the time on my GNex

I truly hope he didn't mean the buttons from the launcher. I imagine he mean the "on device" buttons.

Threads like these make my head hurt a bit

For frak's sake, just get an accurate measurement of the screen and of button height and we can figure it out.

Just put it in tablet ui and it becomes like every other 7in ICS tablet.

Width and height too plz

I'm curious to know the OP's reason for wanting to know the usable content space in physical inches.
I can understand wanting to know it in pixels (presumably 800px x 1200px [80px split between nav and notification bars]) in order to make user made content fill the screen. But physical inches has me scratching my head.
For reference I used the usable screenspace ratio of 1.626 on my Tab 2 7.0 (600px x 976px [48px nav/notification bar at bottom]) to make PDF's fill the screen perfectly.

Because I am really scratching my head as to why you are comparing a phone's body dimensions to a tablet's screen dimensions. Not hatin', just seriously puzzled.

Gotcha. This is the part where I bust out paper and scissors normally. :laugh:
And to wrap this topic up completely the pixel heights for the Nexus 7 bars are:
Notification (top bar): 33px high
Nav (bottom bar): 75px high.
This leaves a 800px x 1172px content area. Hopefully some dpi adjusters for the bottom bar will come out quickly after launch to shrink that down a bit.

I sure hope there will be a mod to autohide the menubar at the bottom. It seem to show up everywhere. Even in games.

Nexus 4 Display

I have a Nexus 7 thinking about a Nexus 4. Do you loose about .3" of display diagonal because of lower 3 key area like you do on the N7? So the 4.7" display is really only 4.4" usable? I also thinking about a Note II, you get a full 5.5".

The Nexus 4 is fine. The screen is rather large. It's quite the same size as the GS3.

I think most of us ditch the navbar at the earliest opportunity and claim the full 4.7" back.
Then use 'pie' controls of some sort or 'button saviour', where you slide you finger/thumb from your chosen area of screen to bring up navigation controls... even though i explained it badly it works well.

I just placed an order for the nexus 4 and I kinda had the same concern. I get what you mean by sliding from the edge of the screen to bring up nav menu. Could you please provide some links to help me look into it more?

its a weird trend. i mean who cares really. youre loosing a couple of pixels so what. android is programmed to take them away anyway when needed, the bar will change position, make way or disappear completely when needed. its flexible. whats more important, its made for fast mavigation, it feels natural the way it is and google had that in mind for sure.
i've always felt that navigation on hardware crippled phones feels awkward, its like out of place. buttons are not placed where you can reach them, they're hidden away to make way for a monstrous display and that will diminish your experience. software buttons give you both, large screen when needed and fast, integrated navigation that is part of the whole.
ps.
as for your n7, theres so many options. gesture based, pie, or androids native UI's. i run my n7 in phone UI for instance which does wonders. the bar will nicely cling to the side in landscape orientation. if you use tabUI the space that you loose is minimal, the same actually as with a hardwarebutton device - one unified bar. its available for phones as well and works just as well

Moles is right. As cool as pie controls are, I prefer googles on screen implementation for general usage because its fast, responsive and convenient.
However it is nice to have the full 4.7 inches while using certain apps like games, readers, gallery etc. Flash a ROM that supports expandable desktop like PA and you can customize the screen real estate per app, to your liking.

I Still Can See Pixels in S4

Somehow I can still see the border of font is jaggies for example white text on dark background in xda app or keyboard. I can see red and green pixel at the border of text..
It is not that sharp.
Do you guys can see it also?
I think full hd pentile is still not enough for 5inch screen to fully unsee the pixels, maybe it should be in 4.5 inch.

No you just have super vision.... Seriously this probably the best display that you can find.

Not a single pixel watchable here! Maybe your images are really really low in graphics or you're playing Minecraft.

It may be that you are beyond average or you device has something wrong with it

Actually, I think you see things. The arrangement of sub-pixels of the S4 is different than rgbg.

but i dont always look at my screen from 10cm image quality is more than enough for me i also prefer true black instead of little more sharper image on lcd.

I have great vision, I can see a bumper sticker on a gnats ass, but I can't see any pixels on mine.

When the phone starts up an the Samsung logo appears, I can also see some jagged curves near the alphabet "S". But with normal distance, it is not possible.

The pixel arrangement does cause the odd artifact to appear on fonts, yes. I sometimes see green halos on the top edges of white fonts on black if i really want to look for it.
There is also a very clear row of red sub pixels at the bottom of the display. if this is what the OP means by 'the boarder' then yep its there and nope he's not just 'seeing things'. Id post an image from my SLR which shows it very clearly but i need 10 posts to link to external websites lol.
Anyway, it's there and real. But its so small that you can't see it really unless you are looking for it. So my advice to the OP is just dont worry about it And my advice to everybody else is.....get your eyes tested :laugh:

If i look closely i can also see pixels.. i guess we'll have to wait for 600+ ppi displays.

It's just crap images, not the lack of pixels. Find a PDF document (vector graphics instead of pixels) and you won't be able to see any.

I don't get it(and I mean no offense at all, I really think I want this phone) but they give you a super big screen, but then it seems like the resolution is super high, like running 640x480 on a 24" monitor. Feels like it defeats the purpose to me.
I am still on my note and generally end up changing the dpi down to 240, which is more to my liking, and I imagine I can do that on a rooted note 3 as well, if not now, eventually. Just seems thats not an option for the phone from jump. And I haven't messed with touchwiz in a while but is it still limited to 5 icons wide, or have they updated to 6? Currently running 7 wide on my note 1, and would think 7 or 8 would probably work best for me on an even larger screen? I would love to keep the phone stock, just wish it could do what I want while keeping it stock.
I mean looking at the screenshot again just the amount of space the home screen indicator takes up, seems like you could fit a whole other row of icons there. And maybe you(by you I mean you, or anyone else) don't need or want that many icons on the home screen. But maybe I want a nice picture on there but still have enough room for some icons without really covering the pic.
Congrats on the new phone though, and seriously, wasn't trying to rain on your parade at all, the phone is awesome.

Yeah, I agree. With a 1920x1080 screen, it definitely looks (and works) better with smaller icons and more rows/columns. Unless I'm missing something, touchwiz is still very limiting as far as personalization goes. I'm back on go launcher, which I used on my previous phone (Note 1).

Nexus impressions

So far loving this thing. Really fast compared to my g3. The screen is definitely different, dimmer or just more subdued. The build IMO is very nice. Doesn't feel near as big or heavy as I thought it was going to.
Couple things I have noticed so far r that the keyboard theams r not all there. The halo blue and white I think r just the same black keyboard. Also there is no face recognition for the lock screen. There is Jo option for it at all. I know I saw a video review stating that it worked in the background of the lock screen.

I believe you have to first enable a pin or password security in order to have the face unlock option available. That was the case on my Nexus 7.

on my nexus 5 its under security..... smart lock....then "trusted face"

It has face unlock mine works fine. It does work in the background, watch the small icon in center at the bottom when you go to unlock it. You have to choose something other than "swipe" for "smartlock" to appear (or not greyed out)
The keyboard themes are all there for me just tried to make sure. They don't change till you back out of the settings so maybe that is what you are seeing?

Well u all r right. Got the face unlock to work and it is very unobtrusive. I like that a lot. As for the keyboard I didn't notice the actual letters and numbers changed color while the overall theme stayed the same. Always a lot to learn with a new OS. Thanks for the help guys

Glad we could help and enjoy learning about 5.0 that is the fun part!

It looks dimmer because it is a warmer screen and more color accurate. GS3 (and most other phones not just AMOLED) have their calibration cooler to make the screen look more vibrant, and the GS3 has bigger blue pixels which also makes the screen bluer. Samsung also oversaturates far more and the touchwiz UI and wallpapers are naturally very contrasty. All reasons for the Nexus 6 screen to look dimmer. I believe the brightness is about the same as a GS3 if you actually measured them.

U r definitely right there. The g3 was just made to pop I think. Much like the Samsung's. Its definitely not a complaint,it just isn't what I'm used to. After figuring out the first two problems I really can't find a complaint. Other then I'm missing my ir blaster. Guess I will HAVE to find that missing remote now.
